How does someone promise another person that she’ll never leave him when deep down, she knows that he’s still keeping secrets and behind those green eyes are truths that would probably shred her heart? For Brooke Stewart, the answer is easy, she doesn’t. No matter how much she wants to and how much she loves Jett Mayfield, her past has left her with the understanding that one’s future is never certain, not when other people are involved and life has a way of deviating from people’s original plans.
Anyone who has read J.C. Reed’s Surrender Your Love series knows what Brooke and Jett had to go through to get where they are when The Lover’s Secret begins. Secrets, betrayals, and danger surrounded their lives from the very beginning, and Jett’s dishonesty led to Brooke’s broken heart. Even though they worked past their issues, when it comes to Jett, Brooke still remains apprehensive of his feelings for her and her trust in him is definitely not 100%.
Regardless of what has occurred between them in the past, no one can deny the passion and lust that exists between them, which explains why at the beginning of the story, Jett is fulfilling one of Brooke’s fantasies of a one night stand with a handsome stranger. But even as their game of pretend plays out, Jett’s mind seems to be on other things and strange events occur that lead Brooke to feeling insecure and betrayed by the man who claims to be willing to risk it all for her.
Even though The Lover’s Secret can be read as a standalone, Brooke and Jett’s original series, Surrender Your Love, provides their back story and gives insightful background about them that is essential in understanding Brooke’s fears and insecurities as well as Jett’s secretive nature. I love that J.C. Reed is adding to their story because they are just starting out as a couple when the first series ends, but if The Lover’s Secret’s storyline is meant to be understood clearly then I think more background needs to be provided about them in order for readers who are unfamiliar with them to get a clear picture of what Brooke is battling against and why just from figuring out a few of Jett’s secrets, her world begins to spiral out of control.
J.C. Reed is a great writer of romantic suspense. She does a great job of slowly unraveling a set of clues for not only her readers to solve but her characters as well. We experience everything through Brooke’s eyes, so we are aware of every internal thought and feeling she is going through as the puzzle pieces start to fall into place. At the end of book one, Brooke is reeling from the information she’s learned and all of her fears have seemed to come to fruition, so it will be interesting to see how Jett explains his actions and what he’s going to have to do to ease the pain and confusion he’s caused from his current deception.
