Synopsis
Tall, dark, and lethal…
Trouble just walked into Nicholas Rixey’s tattoo parlor. Becca Merritt is warm, sexy, wholesome–pure temptation to a very jaded Nick. He’s left his military life behind to become co-owner of Hard Ink Tattoo, but Becca is his ex-commander’s daughter. Loyalty won’t let him turn her away. Lust has plenty to do with it too.
With her brother presumed kidnapped, Becca needs Nick. She just wasn’t expecting to want him so much. As their investigation turns into all-out war with an organized crime ring, only Nick can protect her. And only Becca can heal the scars no one else sees.
Desire is the easy part. Love is as hard as it gets. Good thing Nick is always up for a challenge…
Review
“Find Rixey, the Colonel’s team, Hard Ink Tattoo.”
This is the mission Becca Merritt’s brother, Charile, sends her on after his disappearance. Becca has already lost her mother, father, and older brother, and she refuses to lose her remaining family member. With that in mind, she heads over to Hard Ink Tattoo to meet Rixey, hoping he can help her. Their first encounter is not what Becca is hoping for, and soon after, she finds herself on her own because Rixey refuses to help her. But soon after, “Mr. Tall, Dark, and Dangerously Sexy” comes to Becca’s rescue when an intruder breaks in to her home. From then on, Nick Rixey makes it his mission to protect Becca and hopefully, clear his name and get back everything that he lost due to Becca’s father.
Boy, Laura Kaye knows how to write sexy, alpha male heroes whose lives have been tragically altered and that trauma has emotionally hardened them. Nick Rixey is no exception. He should still be in the midst of his military career, but he trusted the wrong man, Colonel Merritt, Becca’s father, and he is left to figure out his next move after his less than honorably discharge from the Army. Becca and Charlie could very well be just what Nick needs for his honor to be restored.
In the midst of thwarting kidnappers, searching for clues to Charlie’s whereabouts, and reconnecting with Nick’s Special Forces’ team members, Nick and Becca form a connection that neither of them can deny, and no matter how much Nick tries to resist, he cannot stay away from his “sunshine.”
“How in the midst of the worse crisis of her life, had she gone from being utterly alone to finding a whole new family and the love of her life?”
Becca becomes Rixey’s redemption for his tarnished name, life, and soul, and Rixey is Becca’s reward for her saddened and lonely heart.
I love the dynamics between Becca and Nick. They definitely complement each other and are calming elements amidst the chaos. The supporting characters make the book even better. Nick’s brother Jeremy, his private eye friend, Miguel, and his Special Forces’ team members all create such a great family dynamic and just their strong bonds and faith in one another will keep me reading each Hard Ink story that comes along. This group of soldiers is definitely going to be make a great series!
I thoroughly enjoyed Hard As It Gets; in fact, there hasn’t been a Laura Kaye book that I have read that has disappointed me. Ms. Kaye has the extraordinary ability to weave a great storyline, steamy sex scenes, and some kind of action filled mission together in to a hit each and every time!
4.5 poison apples
