REVIEW TOUR: The Crush by Penelope Ward

Title: The Crush
Author: Penelope Ward
Genre: Standalone Contemporary Romance
Release Date: February 22, 2021
BLURB

From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new standalone, second-chance story of forbidden love…

It’s natural to want the one you can’t have. And for as long as I could remember, I’d secretly wanted my brother’s best friend, Jace.

He was six years older and always treated me like the sister he never had.

Fast forward a decade.

We were all in our twenties now. Jace had moved in with my brother, Nathan, and me to help us make ends meet after our parents died.

It was just the three of us—an odd family dynamic.

Living under our roof, Jace was as bossy and protective as ever.

But he certainly didn’t look at me like a sister anymore. That was what made things so complicated.

I was pretty much hot and bothered twenty-four-seven.

And he was torn.

The signs were subtle, at first. Like on movie night, I’d casually rest my leg against his, and he wouldn’t exactly shift away.

Still, I assumed he would never…go there.

Nathan would kill us.

The knowledge of that wasn’t enough to stop the inevitable, though.

Eventually our slow burn exploded.

But more than the physical attraction, we’d developed a strong connection.

We just couldn’t get caught, right?

That sounded simple.

Until it wasn’t.

This is a story of forbidden love, broken trust, and an unexpected second chance.

My Review

I don’t know what it is or why, but every time I read a Penelope Ward romance, I’m always caught off-guard by some aspect of the story line, a revelation or idea that’s presented that I never saw coming, at least not in the way it was presented, and that’s what makes every reading experience with Ward’s stories its own adventure because, as a reader, once you think you’ve read through the angst and dealt completely with the multitude of feelings, more happens to upend things. And I have to say that I like it because it keeps the plot from being predictable and playing out in an ordinary manner, but it also leaves me reeling at times because I need the hero and heroine to get their acts together and do what I need them to do to get their happily ever after, but it’s never that simple with one of Ward’s couples.

Because the number of years that Farrah and Jace’s story spans, there are a handful of life-changing experiences that these two must deal with together as well as individually and because of that, there are many highs and lows involved in the time these two spend around each other and apart while still thinking of one another. It’s interesting to trace how both Farrah and Jace’s feelings ebb and flow given their age difference and the fact that Jace is Farrah’s brother’s best friend, since that very fact brings its own complications to an already awkward and frustrating situation.

It’s fairly easy to trace when Farrah’s unrequited, secret crush on Jace turns into something tangible, partly because Farrah grows up and matures but also Jace seems more willing to take that risk because he can’t just ignore that he wants her, despite the fallout that could happen due to Nathan’s feelings about the two of them. Giving into their feelings did seem inevitable but it doesn’t mean that nothing else matters and that’s clear when individual decisions are made that upend more than one relationship.

There’s a lot to sort out emotionally for both Farrah and Jace and even Nathan, and it’s that baggage that prompts moments of regret, frustration, and heartache, but, to me, those issues are worth enduring, worth fighting for because the way these two are together and how they make each other feel is something that many don’t get a chance to have, which means that despite the obstacles, they deserve their love to grow.

I definitely needed the sweet and swoon worthy ending that Penelope Ward gives readers after my emotions were all over the place due to the time Farrah and Jace spent denying feelings as well as being apart, trying to move on and seemingly failing miserably at it. Proving that all they endured led them to where they ultimately wanted to always be.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW AND EXCERPT: Pure Seduction by Ella Frank

Pure Seduction, an all-new emotional second-chance romance from USA Today bestselling author Ella Frank is available now!

Small towns are definitely not for me. Probably because I was born in one, raised in one, and eventually run out of one. The understanding was that I would one day return to Chamberlin California. After all, it is my namesake. What my father didn’t count on however, was that once he sent me away, I would never come back—at least not until he was gone.

Which brings me to now, his wake, at the family winery that was supposed to be mine. It also brings me to her. The sweet girl I left behind. The girl who has since grown into the most beautiful woman I’ve ever laid eyes on—Laurel Anderson.

She’s looking at me as though she wishes I was the one she watched get buried this morning. But she’s out of luck. I’m alive and kicking. I’m also stuck in this town with nothing to do but wait until the will is read.

Well, nothing to do but see if I can seduce the pure and passionate Laurel, and change that anger I see in her eyes to something just as fiery…desire.

***

The last time I saw Noah Chamberlin, I was a doe-eyed innocent and he was the boy of my dreams. My future was all planned out down to the wedding dress, until one morning I woke up and he was gone.

You’d think after all these years, I’d feel the same blind indignation and rage that has haunted me since that day. Instead, the second I set eyes on him again, I felt something altogether unwanted and unexpected—lust.

If the rumors are true, he’s only going to be in Chamberlin for a few days. I can handle that, as long as he stops looking at me as though he’s thinking about the last time we were together.

But when Noah’s forced to stay and run the family business, it puts us in dangerously close proximity. And in a town this small, that can only mean one thing—trouble.

My Review

When I first started reading Ella Frank, it was her Exquisite series and since then, I’ve pretty much read her whole collection. She is also responsible for one of my favorite book couples of all time – Logan & Tate. She hasn’t written an M/F series for a while, so I was excited to dive into Pure Seduction, book one of the Chamberlin Brothers series and the fact that Noah Chamberlin and Laurel Anderson’s story is a second-chance, first love romance made me all the more eager to meet Frank’s new characters and world.

Noah and Laurel share a past that meant everything to both of them until Noah left their hometown, leaving her behind and never planning on returning. But when Noah unexpectedly returns and is forced to remain longer than he had thought, both of them will need to consider what they’re willing to risk, if anything, for a second chance.

Laurel has every right to keep her distance from the man who broke her heart, but the problem is that their connection and attraction are still there, complicating an already precarious situation. And Laurel’s role in the Chamberlin family business also creates its own set of issues for these two.

The winery setting is the perfect backdrop for the series and it plays a key role in the story line, not only because it’s the family business but also because the environment allows for rather unique interactions between characters.

Pure Seduction is about making amends, remembering what families are for, working toward forgiveness and focusing on the future after dealing with the past. It’s about repairing what’s broken and proving that it’s never too late to heal from heartache, as long as both parties are willing to do the work. And because Frank writes characters with depth and crafts secondary characters who play pivotal roles in the lives of the hero and heroine, there’s quite the well-placed set up for the other books in the series and I can’t wait to read them.

Excerpt

“Laurel Anderson.”

My heart all but stopped at the sound of my name in that smooth, seductive timbre, and my fingers tightened on the handle.

“Hi.” Brilliant. After all these years, that was what came out of my mouth.

A smile slowly curved Noah’s lips, as though he knew I was tongue-tied, and I wanted to kick myself—or him—for it.

“Hi yourself.”

I swallowed and tried to remember that somewhere inside my head I possessed a brain. Now if I could just locate it, that would be fantastic. “I, uh, I didn’t know you were coming today.”

“No? Everyone else in town seemed to.”

“Well, you know how it goes. You can’t rely on everything you hear.”

“Ah. So you heard—you just didn’t believe it.”

“I didn’t really think about it either way.” Liar. “I’m sorry for your loss, though. Harry was—”

“An A-grade bastard?”

My eyes widened at the cool edge to Noah’s voice. It was a tone I’d never heard from him before. But then again, I didn’t know this man, so I had no point of reference.

“That seems harsh, huh?”

“It seems…” Noah’s eyes locked on me with an intensity I felt all the way to my bones. “Honest.”

He shifted the wine bottle from one hand to the other, then he held it up by the neck and asked, “A good year?”

I focused on the label, a 2012 Pinot Noir. “It was a great year.”

Noah nodded and turned the bottle around so he could look at it again. “And you should know, or so I’m told. You manage this place now.”

I wondered who had told him. His mother? Or one of his siblings? I’d never imagined a career in the wine business, and I certainly hadn’t imagined one here at his family’s winery. But circumstances had left me little choice, and now I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

“I do. I’m also the head sommelier.”

Noah let out a sound of disbelief that made my spine stiffen. I was good at my job—damn good at it.

“I hope that won’t be a problem for you.”

“A problem?” Noah shook his head. “No. I was just thinking how my family hasn’t changed at all. They still like their secrets.”

The temperature in the room dropped back to arctic, and as I was about to hightail it out of there, Noah took a step forward. I plastered my back to the door and, cursing myself for showing my hand—and my nerves—counted back from ten before daring to look him in the eye.

That was a mistake. I recognized those eyes and the thick lashes that curtained them. I also recognized the look in them right now. It was one of curiosity and interest.

“I wasn’t so sure about coming back here when I showed up earlier.”

His gaze roved over my face, as though he were searching for the girl he once knew, and I wondered if he saw parts of her in there.

“But suddenly I find myself even happier that that asshole up and died. Otherwise I’d never have known you were here.”

I wasn’t surprised in the slightest that my working here had been kept quiet. Harry had worked really hard to remove me from Noah’s life. He wasn’t about to tell him I was still around.

“Well, um, I don’t want to hold you up anymore, and I need to get back to your mother’s guests.” I turned to open the door, but when I felt his hand on my shoulder, my feet froze.

“Looking to make a quick escape again, Bonnie?”

I closed my eyes and for a second allowed myself to remember the first time he’d ever called me that. Then I quickly shoved it aside, not willing to allow in the emotions and vulnerabilities those kind of memories would bring.

“Do you blame me?”

There was a pause, and the tension simmering in the air made it even more imperative that I get out of there right now.

“No. I guess I don’t. But before you go?”

“Yes?” As his hand fell away, I let out a silent sigh of relief.

“I was wondering if you could tell me the best place to stay in town?”

RELEASE BLITZ: Bet the Farm by Staci Hart

Bet the Farm is LIVE and available from your favorite online book retailer!

This heartfelt, flirty story of opposites attract from Staci Hart is just what you need.

Happy reading! 💕

Amazon | AppleBooks | Kobo | B&N | Goodreads

Olivia Brent has one summer to save the dairy farm she just inherited.

But there’s one problem, and it’s not her lactose intolerance.

Jake Milovic.

The brooding farmhand has inherited exactly fifty percent of Brent Farm, and he’s so convinced the city girl can’t work the land, he bets she can’t save it in a summer.

Determined to prove him wrong, Olivia accepts what might be the dumbest wager of her life.

His strategy to win seems simple: follow her around, shirtlessly distracting her between bouts of relentless taunting. And it’s effective—if his dark eyes and rare smiles aren’t enough to sidetrack her, the sweaty, rolling topography of the manbeast’s body would do the trick.

What they don’t know: they’ll have to weather more than each other.

Mysterious circumstances throw the farm into disarray, and with the dairy farm in danger, Olivia and Jake have to work together. But when they do, there’s more to fear than either of them imagined.

Because now their hearts are on the line, and the farm won’t be the only casualty if they fail.

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life — a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can’t forget that. She’s also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She’s been a wife, though she’s certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She’s also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she’s been drinking whiskey. When she’s not writing, she’s reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.

My Review

The concept of the story line is unique. The fact that both the hero and heroine seem to be at the top of their respective games but then get their legs cut out from under them and have to figure out their next moves is a concept that readers will be able to relate to. And it’s clear early on that Lucian Osmond and Emma Maron seriously don’t know what their next step is, which puts them quite a bit outside of their element. What they would both agree on is that they find themselves in need of an escape – one that will allow them to work on redefining who they are, which is no easy task given how much their lives revolved around their careers that are no longer viable options.

The setting and the environment these two find themselves in is conducive to keeping a low profile but it also keeps them in close proximity to one another and since they didn’t seem to start on the right foot with each other, they try to keep to themselves and not have to reveal who they truly are, but that’s easier said than done when they realize that there’s a pull between them…an attraction that refuses to remain dormant, regardless of Lucian’s broody behavior.

Some readers may see Lucian as gruff and moody throughout the story, but to me, those descriptors don’t truly represent who Lucian the man is…it’s more so that because he has had to reconsider all aspects of his life, the transition, the change is what makes him feel off-kilter and even act that way toward other people in the story. And while Emma seems turned-off at times by his treatment of her, like the amazing desserts he makes, she can’t help but find him a decadent sugary treat as well.

The secondary characters play a key role in helping the hero and heroine heal from the things that they’ve lost and even attempt to go the matchmaker route, even though it didn’t seem like Lucian and Emma needed much help in that department, at least when it came to their attraction to one another. It was more that Lucian needed to understand that his whole worth was not defined by his professional hockey career and she was more than her television role.

Kristen Callihan definitely made Lucian and Emma’s story sweet and while there is angst and dramatics, for the most part, Make It Sweet is a feel-good, slow-burn romance.

My Review

First loves are always difficult to forget, and in Corinne Michaels’ newest release, Return to Us, that very idea is explored when Jessica Walker returns home to Willow Creek Valley and has to face Grayson Parkerson, the one she let go when she left their small town to experience all the world had to offer. And now she’s back and needs to coexist, knowing the way he treats her and keeps his walls up is completely justified.

Boy does Corinne Michaels know how to bring the feels. And with the dynamics involved in book one of her new series, the angst is necessary, and even though it keeps readers’ stomachs in knots, waiting to see if the hero and heroine will be able to work through, comes to terms with, heal from and move past, getting to that point in the story where things appear to be getting better is worth it.

In a lot of ways, I understand why she left all those years ago, getting out of her small town and doing the things that she’s only imagined doing. She wanted a clean break…she wanted to allow her first love to move on because she truly didn’t plan on coming back to Willow Creek Valley. And while breaking Grayson’s heart and giving him up so easily seems cold and unforgivable, in order to move forward, hopefully together, it needs to happen, which means things will get worse and more tense between these two until they meet somewhere in the middle.

Second-chance romances are some of my favorite stories because despite the time and even the distance that the hero and heroine have spent apart, there’s an established relationship, based on a foundation of love, which means there’s a starting point – one that allows hope to be felt.

Grayson and Jessica’s story is one of regret, forgiveness, true love, and second chances and the fact that Grayson is a single-dad with one cute little girl is an added bonus in this emotionally-charged contemporary romance.

RELEASE BLITZ: The Things We Leave Unfinished by Rebecca Yarros

THE THINGS WE LEAVE UNFINISHED by Rebecca Yarros

Release Date: February 23rd

Add to Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/53137938-the-things-we-leave-unfinished

Blurb

Told in alternating timelines, THE THINGS WE LEAVE UNFINISHED examines the risks we take for love, the scars too deep to heal, and the endings we can’t bring ourselves to see coming.

Twenty-eight-year-old Georgia Stanton has to start over after she gave up almost everything in a brutal divorce—the New York house, the friends, and her pride. Now back home at her late great-grandmother’s estate in Colorado, she finds herself face-to-face with Noah Harrison, the bestselling author of a million books where the cover is always people nearly kissing. He’s just as arrogant in person as in interviews, and she’ll be damned if the good-looking writer of love stories thinks he’s the one to finish her grandmother’s final novel…even if the publisher swears he’s the perfect fit.

Noah is at the pinnacle of his career. With book and movie deals galore, there isn’t much the “golden boy” of modern fiction hasn’t accomplished. But he can’t walk away from what might be the best book of the century—the one his idol, Scarlett Stanton, left unfinished. Coming up with a fitting ending for the legendary author is one thing, but dealing with her beautiful, stubborn, cynical great-granddaughter, Georgia, is quite another.

But as they read Scarlett’s words in both the manuscript and her box of letters, they start to realize why Scarlett never finished the book—it’s based on her real-life romance with a World War II pilot, and the ending isn’t a happy one. Georgia knows all too well that love never works out, and while the chemistry and connection between her and Noah is undeniable, she’s as determined as ever to learn from her great-grandmother’s mistakes—even if it means destroying Noah’s career.

Maggie Fitzgerald is the last girl I should think about taking to my bed.

On the cusp of turning 21, she has her whole life waiting out ahead of her. Sexy AF while still radiating an innocence that I know better than to taint.

And here I am, itching to reach out and touch a girl who is so forbidden that just thinking about her feels like committing a mortal sin.

Thing is, I love playing with fire.

Rhys Manning is everything I shouldn’t want.

Now, I’m stuck living with him for the entire summer…

We’re only supposed to be friends. Still, I should have known it was a terrible idea when I started sneaking into his room. Especially when it’s clear he’s keeping secrets.

Secrets that might destroy us both.

One touch, and I want more.

One kiss, and I’m spiraling out of control.

I know it’s reckless to start dancing in the flames.

But in exchange for getting to spend one night with this brooding bad boy? I might be willing to get burned…

RELEASE BLITZ: THE CRUSH by Penelope Ward

RELEASE BLITZ: Pure Seduction by Ella Frank

Pure Seduction, an all-new small-town second-chance romance from USA Today bestselling author Ella Frank is available now!

“I’m gonna grab a beer,” he said. “You want something?”

“I’ll take a beer, too.”

He chuckled. “Is it bad that I had to think for a second whether you’re legal to drink? It feels wrong giving you alcohol, for some reason.”

“You’ve dropped me off at the damn bar! How could you think that?”

“I know. It’s fucked-up.” He laughed as he walked backwards into the house. “Be right back.”

A minute later, Jace returned with two chilled bottles of Miller Lite. He popped one open and handed it to me.

“Thanks.” I took a long sip that felt great going down.

We polished off the rest of the food, and by the time I finished the beer, I felt pretty tipsy. Between the soft breeze blowing Jace’s scent my way and the buzz, I was on cloud nine.

Jace took it upon himself to clear our wrappers and napkins, stuffing everything into the paper bag. As he went back into the kitchen, he asked, “Want another beer?”

“I’d love one.”

When he returned, he set the bottle in front of me and sat back down. He put his feet up on an empty chair and leaned his head back, closing his eyes.

He sighed. “This is exactly what I needed…to chill at home.”

That made me happy. “Give your head a break tonight. You can always worry about work tomorrow.”

“Yeah. I think I’m gonna take your advice on that.”

While his eyes were closed, I was able to enjoy staring at his profile—his strong, angular jaw and slightly cleft chin, his perfect nose and kissable lips, the way the sun brought out a reddish tone in his otherwise black hair. Jace was even more beautiful with the sun shining on him.

I eventually closed my eyes as well, enjoying the breeze that offset a little of the heat. My eyes opened suddenly when I heard his chair skid against the cement.

“Fuck it.” He got up. “I’ll be right back.”

My heart raced a little. What is he doing?

A few minutes later, Jace returned in his swim trunks. They were blue with tiny anchors, a nautical pattern. Not that I was looking closely at his lower half or anything. I’d just started to make my way up to his chest when he dove into the pool, his gorgeous, hard body disappearing under the sky blue water.

He emerged and shook his head to clear the water from his hair. “You comin’ in or what?”

I got goose bumps. I hadn’t planned to, but I couldn’t resist the invitation.

“Sure.” I got up from my seat and unwrapped the towel.

Jace watched as I entered the pool. But what was he thinking?

I dove in and swam toward him, feeling more comfortable in my bathing suit now that I was submerged in the water.

He flashed a mischievous grin. “Wanna race?”

I splashed him. “Why? You think you can beat me just cuz your legs are longer?”

He cocked a brow. “There’s only one way to find out, right?”

Over the next several minutes, Jace and I swam in tandem from one end of the pool to the other. Sometimes he’d beat me to the other side, and a few times, I beat him.

Eventually, we got into a water fight. The next thing I knew, he was chasing me, then lifting me up and tossing me in the water.

He did that several times. It was the most fun I’d had in a long time. I hadn’t a care in the world.

Then he lifted me up again, and I was certain he was going to toss me into the water, just like all of the other times. Instead, though, he just held me. Our eyes locked as my legs wrapped around his waist. He was going to have to drop me, because I sure as hell wasn’t climbing off him willingly. As he continued to hold me, the world seemed to stop. I could see the reflection of the palm trees in his gorgeous eyes, made luminescent by the sun. Those eyes then dropped to my lips. I could see his chest rising and falling. He swallowed hard. Holy shit. Something was happening. My heart was going a mile a minute.

And then…

“What are you doing?”

Jace dropped me like a hot potato at the sound of Nathan’s voice. My body hit the water with a loud splash.

What the hell is he doing here? My voice was shaky as I wiped the water from my eyes. “Wha…why are you home? I thought you were driving to meet that girl.”

“She canceled on me, so I came back after the job interview.” Nathan’s eyes traveled between Jace and me. He seemed suspicious.

“Oh.” I exhaled, moving a strand of hair out of my mouth. “How…how did the interview go?”

“It was okay. Too hard to tell if they’re gonna call me back, though.” He looked straight at Jace. “You guys seemed to be having fun. Didn’t realize I was missing out on a…pool party.”

Jace was silent.

I felt the need to chime in. “Jace decided to take his debut dip in the pool. We were just playing around.”

Nathan looked between us again. “I see.”

Jace finally spoke. “Well, it’s hot as all hell today. So…”

“You guys down if I make some dinner?” Nathan finally asked.

“We actually already ate,” I told him. “Jace went to Checkers.”

Nathan turned to his friend. “Since when do you eat dinner this early?”

Jace cleared his throat. “I was starving.”

We didn’t think you were going to be home,” I said. “Otherwise, we would’ve waited.”

“I guess I’ll give you that.”

Jace got out of the water and dried himself off. He then laid out on one of the loungers, displaying his gorgeous, tanned body in all of its glistening glory. His feet dangled off the end of the chair.

Nathan snapped his fingers in front of my face. “I asked if I got anything in the mail. Earth to Farrah.”

Jesus. I hadn’t even heard him the first time.
