My Review

A love manipulator – A meet-cute king – A matchmaker of epic proportions…these are all monikers for the real-life cupid himself, Seth Harding.

Seth Harding is quite the paradoxical man, and with his contrariness comes a whole litany of issues, not only for himself, but his business, and his current client – a Mr. Right looking for his Mrs. Right. But that love connection doesn’t appear a match made because the woman his client wants, doesn’t want him, and what makes things even more complicated is the fact that the more interactions has with Seth, the more she wonders if destiny played a hand in bringing them together…but what happens when she finds out that Seth orchestrated everything and all of their chance encounters are anything but…and when Seth’s latest client threatens to ruin his perfect record as well as make him go back on his golden rule, the idea of true love, of destined/fated love is thrown out into the cosmos and what comes back may very well ruin his business and break several hearts in the process. .

The manufacturing and manipulating that is involved with Seth’s business is most definitely going against the belief of fate bringing two people together…or is it? The fact that it brings Seth into April’s life may prove his theory, but for the fated romance lover April, anything or anyone that provides a helping hand for love doesn’t seem to be meant to be, and perhaps may even face the repercussions of said orchestration when karma comes calling.

I like to mix a few sweet and light-hearted reads into my reading schedule after several dark ones, so The Romeo Effect was exactly what I needed. I like that Lila Monroe doesn’t adhere to popular/stereotypical conventions of romantic comedies or at least flips them a bit and makes them her own, which absolutely worked in Seth and April’s story.

RELEASE BLITZ AND REVIEW: Heartland by Sarina Bowen

An emotional friends to lovers romance full of risky secrets and late-night lessons in seduction.

Heartland by Sarina Bowen

Book #7 in the True North Series

January 28, 2019

Synopsis

Dylan is my best friend, and the only person in my life who understands me. He doesn’t mind my social awkwardness or my weird history. The only glitch? He doesn’t know that I’ve been hopelessly, desperately in love with him since the first day we picked apples together in his family’s orchard.

But I know better than to confess.

Now that we’re both in college together, I’m seeing a new side of him. College Dylan drinks and has a lot of sex. None of it with me. Until the night I foolishly ask him to tutor me in more than algebra…and he actually says yes.

But the cool morning light shows me how badly I’ve endangered our friendship. And I don’t know if anything will be the same again.

My Review

Sarina Bowen’s True North series is a world that I’ll never feel ready to say goodbye to, so when I saw that Zach, the youngest Shipley brother, was the hero of book 7, I couldn’t wait to head back to Vermont – a place that more and more feels like coming home.

Due to Zach’s age, I knew that his story would probably be a bit different than some of the other stories in the series, which also meant that he would be more apt to make quite a few mistakes, that he would need to learn from, as well as say and do things that would make me want to knock some sense into him. And, boy, was I right in this assessment, but because Bowen gives readers Zach’s point of view, she makes us want to give him the benefit of the doubt, wants us to wait for him to realize what’s right in front of him, and while it does take him some time to get out of his own way and to stop hurting Chastity, even if that wasn’t his intention.

It’s clear early on that both characters are a work-in-progress, and it completely makes sense, given their age and the new experiences they’re facing at college. But Chastity has to contend with even more challenges due to her past, and those issues are compounded by her unrequited love for Dylan. As a reader, I felt deeply for what Chastity had faced and what she continues to endure as she moves forward. But I also give her so much credit for truly experiencing all that life has to offer, and even if she’s a bit too innocent and Zach feels the need to protect her, the person he should be protecting her from is himself.

The emotions present in Zach and Chastity’s story are a bit overwhelming at times, especially when readers are given Chastity’s perspective and hear everything in her own words, but it also makes that much more triumphant when she and Zach figure out exactly what they want and go about making it happen.

Heartland most definitely has a friends-to-lovers’ plot line, but I also see it as a story of self-discovery, of figuring out exactly who you are and what you want your life to look and feel like. It’s a heartfelt story that both breaks and heals as Zach and Chastity work to realize where they belong and who they belong with, regardless of their past mistakes and issues.

Excerpt

“So why were you having a bad day, anyway?” Ellie asks. “Man trouble?”

“Not exactly. It’s more like a lack of man trouble. I kissed my hot algebra tutor. And I wasn’t supposed to.”

Her big eyes widen. “Which hot algebra tutor? You never said.”

“He doesn’t work at the lab,” I say hastily. “He’s a friend. And he wants to stay that way.”

“Oh.” She looks deflated. “That is a bummer.”

“Do you have a boyfriend?”

“No.” She makes a face. “It would be nice, though. This year is kind of lonely. My roommate is a total bitch.”

“Oh, I have one of those, too.”

“Yeah?” Ellie’s eyes brighten. “Does yours steal your clothes and then lie about it?”

“Um, no. She wouldn’t want any of my things. We have singles, anyway. Just a common bathroom.”

“Lucky! She must be easier to stand, then.”

“You’d think.” I take a gulp of mint tea.

“My roommate took my brand-new scarf. With the tags still on! And when I called her out on it, she tried to gaslight me.”

“Gaslight?” I feel my cheeks flush like they sometimes do when I don’t understand the idioms that people use.

“You don’t know Gaslight? It’s a movie from the forties.”

“Ingrid Bergman,” says Dylan’s voice. “We haven’t got around to the classics yet.”

I startle, sloshing my tea over my hand. And when I look up, Dylan is right there. Clear brown eyes. Tousled hair. Tight, muscular body that’s clothed in a nice sweater and ripped jeans. A handsome face that I finally kissed.

Pain slices through me. Because I’m never going to get over him. There will never be a day when I look at Dylan and don’t wish for more.

“Can I talk to you for a quick second?” he asks, taking the mug and grabbing a napkin off the table. He wipes the tea off my hand.

“Now is not a good time,” I say quickly. Because I don’t want to cry in the coffee shop in front of my only new friend.

Dylan actually rolls his eyes. “Fifteen seconds, Chass. Give a man a break.”

I’d talk to you.” Ellie raises her hand like a school girl. “Pick me.”

And that’s just what I need—another girl in my life who’s swooning for Dylan. Because that always turns out well.

“Fine. Fifteen seconds.” I jump to my feet. Let’s get this over with.

Dylan takes my arm and tows me gently over toward the bulletin board, where nobody is currently reading the flyers for meditation circles and ski equipment sales.

“Look, I’m sorry,” is his opener. “You’re avoiding me. Not that I blame you. I’m sorry things got so out of control.”

“Which things?” I ask warily. Because I don’t want an apology for fooling around with me.

“Pick one!” Dylan raises his hands. “All the things. I shouldn’t have been so inappropriate.”

“But…” I know Dylan was in a serious state of drunken depression when he kissed me. It’s not like I was expecting to hear those kisses made him as happy as they made me. But would it kill him to be a little less patronizing? “Dylan, I’m not twelve years old. It was just a kiss or two. I don’t think I’ll need a full course of therapy to recover.”

He blinks. “Okay. Good?”

“So did you really need to drag me over here to apologize a third time? Did you apologize to all the girls you kissed during Spin the Bottle in seventh grade?”

I heard about Spin the Bottle and Seven Minutes in Heaven only last year, by eavesdropping on Debbie and her buddies at another bonfire. I’d been transfixed by their tales of who’d kissed whom over the years and how often.

At thirteen, Spin the Bottle would have sounded like heaven to me. Seven minutes in a closet with a boy? I would have lobbied for eight. I was always the most inappropriate girl in the bunch.

Yet somehow Dylan sees me as some kind of innocent child.

“No. Good point.” He crosses his delicious arms and smiles at me. “You are in a feisty mood today.”

“Is that so wrong?”

“No.” He shakes his handsome head. “Not at all. Are we going to hug it out?” He opens his big arms wide.

Oh boy. I can’t resist stepping into them. And when he pulls me in, I experience the familiar hormone rush that always happens when I’m close to him. Rapid heartbeat? Check. Goosebumps? Check. My nose lands against his flannel shirt.

My mouth is mere inches from his, of course. But this time he has no interest in kissing me. It takes all my willpower to give him a squeeze and then step back.

“Be well, Chass. I’ll leave you to your tutoring session, even if you’re basically cheating on me right now. But we’re still making caramels this weekend, right? I told Griffin we could use six gallons of goat’s milk. Don’t make a liar out of me.”

“I won’t,” I say quickly. I might be slightly irritated at him, but it will blow over. My capacity to forgive him for not loving me back is basically infinite. “We’ll leave right after Friday classes?”

“You got it. And this is for you. Share it with your friend.” He pulls something out of his pocket. “More market research.”

He puts a little box in my hand and then walks away.

As always, it takes me a second to get over my hormone rush. I stand there blinking for a long moment until I realize Ellie is grinning at me from the sofa. So I go back over to her and sit down.

“Wow…” she says, stealing a glance at Dylan’s retreating backside. “Is that hot hunk of Vermont male your algebra tutor?”

“Yes.” My voice is gravel.

“And your future ex-boyfriend?”

“Nope. I’ll never get that chance. He’s my best friend, but…” There’s no tidy explanation.

“But you want more. I would if it were me.”

I nod, miserable.

RELEASE AND REVIEW BLITZ: BASTARD BACHELOR SOCIETY by Sara Ney

BASTARD BACHELOR SOCIETY

The Bachelor Club #1

By Sara Ney

Release Date: January 28

What is the Bastard Bachelor Society?

It’s a gentleman’s club—like the dignified men of the past used to have.

Except, we’re not gentleman, and we’re not dignified.

We’re ineligible bachelors; bored, jaded and not looking for relationships. Quite the opposite actually

We’re so committed to being single, we’ve created a high stakes bet to see who can remain single the longest. Rules are involved. Prizes.

Laugh it up, but I’m no loser.

Enemy number one to my single status? My irresistible neighbor, Abbott Margolis. She with her evil cat Desdemona, and Sexy AF pencil skirts. She’s kind and beautiful and hilarious. We can’t get involved, no matter how much her meddling grandmother pushes us together. But if I was going to lose this bet for anyone? It would for Abbott.

Let’s face facts: I’m a bastard, unwilling to settle down.

Especially when there’s a bet to win.

My Review

I truly wonder why successful businessmen need to show off their competitive prowess by betting on ridiculous situations – ones that deal with other people who aren’t privy to these high stakes’ games and could end up breaking their heart or hurting them in ways they might not be able to endure.

In some ways, I completely understand why Brooks Bennett and his group of friends would create a society that revels in being single and promotes that kind of living until the end of days, and the fact that there are rules to follow and a club to be a part of indicates just how much Brooks and the others don’t want to be hurt by the fairer sex.

But it’s not like they swore a blood oath or anything, and while money is on the line because of their ‘friendly’ wager, when the best thing, or in this case, person walks through your door, literally, you stand up and listen…you spend every moment with that person as you can…you fall head-over-heels because there’s someone who gets you on a level you never thought possible. What you DO NOT do is friend-zone her and pretend like there’s nothing between you but friendship.

Too bad Brooks didn’t seem to get that memo until it was almost too late.

Brooks and Abbott together – no matter the situation or non-relationship status – is proof that some people just click instantly and no matter how hard they fight it or appear oblivious to their own feelings for one another, they’re bound to want to act on those feelings, throwing caution and perhaps money, out the window.

The way that Abbott and Brooks hit things off almost immediately in what has to be one of my absolute favorite meet-cutes is proof that insta-lust, probably not love, exists. And their connection only grows with the more time they spend together and the witty exchanges that seem to define just how on point they are when it comes to one another.

I will admit that Brooks rubbed me the wrong way from the start, but that’s probably by bias about the society that he and his friends created and the fact that their need to win the bet makes him, at least attempt, to push the best thing that may have ever happened to him away, caring more about everything other than the woman who seems to own him.

Abbott’s meddling sweetheart of a grandmother is one of my favorite aspects of the book, and the way she nudges her granddaughter and Brooks toward each other, every chance she gets, makes it impossible not to be in her corner, pushing these two to fess up and try ‘more,’ even if they think it won’t work. And, Grams’ relationship with Brooks also adds a layer to the perplexing man that Brooks can be at times and shows a side of him that is patient and kind and oh so swoonworthy.

I intrigued by the other ineligible bachelors and I’m ready to see them dropped squarely on their butt when their girl enters their lives and shakes up their beliefs in the society and their singledom.

Swallowing lies has never felt so good.

Reed freaking Rivers. I wouldn’t trust a word out of the arrogant music mogul’s mouth if his gold-plated tongue were notarized. The Man with the Midas Touch would say anything to get me into his bed, and I know it. But that doesn’t mean I don’t want him to succeed.

Indeed, the moment I laid eyes on Reed while he was speaking at an on-campus event I’d crashed, my body physically ached to feel his golden fingers—and tongue—all over me. Unfortunately, though, I can’t give into my powerful craving to jump Reed’s cocky bones. Not until I’ve figured out my best strategy with him . . .

The truth is Reed has something I desperately want. Something my heart desires even more than my body craves one night of delicious fun with the yummiest man alive. Reed assumes he’s running this game of seduction. He thinks he’s a thirty-four-year-old big cat on the prowl, and I’m nothing but a blushing twenty-one-year old field mouse with stars in my eyes.

Yeah . . . no.

As Reed is about to find out, he’s not the only cat on the hunt in this game of cat-and-mouse . . . .

BAD LIAR is the first book of the standalone REED RIVERS TRILOGY. The full trilogy is BAD LIAR, BEAUTIFUL LIAR, and BELOVED LIAR, to be read in order.

COVER REVEAL: Unbreakable by Melanie Harlow

UNBREAKABLE COVER REVEAL BANNER

Unbreakable, an all new sexy and swoon-worthy friends to lovers romance from USA Today bestselling author Melanie Harlow, is coming February 10th, and we have the gorgeous cover!

Unbreakable AMAZON

In hindsight, I should not have had that fifth mimosa at Breakfast with Santa.

Or the sixth, seventh, and eighth.

But my shame over the public meltdown that resulted was nothing compared to being abandoned by my husband of fifteen years for a much younger woman—and did I mention she’s pregnant?

For the sake of my children and my pride, I pack up and head for my childhood home and the small town where I grew up. Cloverleigh Farms would be the perfect place for a fresh start.

Falling for Henry DeSantis wasn’t part of the plan.

Sure, he’s easy on the eyes and hard in the bedroom (also the hallway, the bathtub, and on top of his desk), but he’s newly divorced too, and things between us are moving so fast I’m afraid neither one of us has had enough time to heal. Not to mention the fact that I’m a single mom now—my kids have to come first.

But Henry makes me feel beautiful and sexy and wanted and strong—things I haven’t felt in years. We understand each other, and when I’m in his arms, I’m tempted to trust again. To love again. To let myself be loved without fear.

But deep down, I’m terrified.

Is this all too much, too soon? Or am I a fool to let a second chance at happily ever after pass me by?

Excerpt

The ink was barely dry on the pages. I don’t know if I was ready for this. Somehow I felt like I was more of a virgin than Grayson. Nervous, skittish. He’d warned me when all of this began that the things he’d seen and done would wreck me.

I should’ve believed him then.

When I didn’t do anything for a minute, he arched a brow.

Do whatever he says.

I could use my safe word, but a twisted part of me liked doing what he told me to do. Liked the rush and the way his eyes hardened. It felt like power, power over one of the most powerful people in the world.

I’d barely taken a step to him, when he ripped me to him by the small of my waist. His other hand tangled in my hair, yanking my head to the side.

“Fuck,” he said, lips at my neck. “Which part do I eat first.”

Delicious tingles spread along my skin at his words. His nose ran along my neck, goosebumps following in his wake. His hands slid from hair, from my waist, along my body, feeling every inch of me, like he couldn’t do it fast enough, before settling back in my hair.

Deliriously, I found the zipper of my dress, but his overtook mine. Stopping me.

“I’m going to ruin your white dress, Snitch. Ruin you. Until you’re all fucked up from me.”

About the Author

I started writing the moment I could read. My first characters were Wibbley and Squig and I used MS Word and clipart to bring them to life when I was a kid in elementary school. I started seriously thinking about being a writer in High School and I remember the day exactly, because it was such an epiphany. I was always so uncertain. You know how everyone was always asking what you wanted to be when you were older? Well I NEVER could decide.

I wanted to be a marine biologist.

An actor.

A FIRE FIGHTER (thank you Joaquin Phoenix in Ladder 49 for that phase).

One day it hit me—A WRITER. I could do it ALL. Then you couldn’t stop me from writing. I penned my first novel at fifteen (but don’t ask me to show it to you, because it’s like I was in competition to beat the thesaurus). When I was diagnosed with a chronic illness, writing became even more important, because it became my therapy. When I wrote my characters, suddenly I wasn’t so alone.

These days you can find me daydreaming about where to travel with my husband, singing in my car, or lost in the newest K drama. And planning my next novel, of course
