SYNOPSIS
From New York Times and USA Today Bestselling author, Marquita Valentine, comes the 4th book in her new adult series, BOYS OF THE SOUTH.
There’s only one place in the world Lacey Evans feels normal- the roller derby track. When she laces up her skates and fastens her helmet, she’s powerful and in charge. She knows exactly what to do and what to say. The rules are clear and penalties are enforced for those who don’t follow them. But in the read world, she’s far from powerful and in charge. She never knows exactly what to do and say. For years, she counted on one person to be exactly who he said he was–her best friend, Wyatt Tanaka. Only she changed the rules on him, without any warning, and now she’s the one being punished.
Marine veteran, Wyatt Tanaka, came home to a heroes welcome. But he’s hiding a secret, one that could potential destroy his life. He’s doing the best he can, trying to cope with the guilt and the pain of the girl he loves pushing him away by doing all the things he’d sworn not too. Women, bars, drugs and drinking are what consume him. With Lacey’s new rules, he has nothing to hold on to. Nothing to keep in from feeling dead.
Then one night, he goes too far, gets in too deep, and when the truth comes out… will Lacey keep pushing him away or help save him?
REVIEW
***Arc was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review***
Wish for You is book four of The Boys of the South series, and my favorite of the four because of its realistic depiction of two very real issues – PTSD and OCD with panic attacks.
In book one, readers are introduced to Lacey, Rae’s roller derby friend, and Wyatt, Cole’s friend who has just returned from war. They have off the charts chemistry with one another, but they also have deeply rooted personal problems – one from the aftermath of war and the other from an undiagnosed disorder. They love each other deeply, but miscommunication, low self-esteem, and addiction plague their growing relationship from the start. Lacey “friend-zones” them early on, despite her true feelings for Wyatt, which makes Wyatt lash out in the only way he can – women, alcohol, and drugs. What follows is the push and pull between two people who complete each other, despite their issues, but those same people find it hard to see what is directly in front of them.
Lacey is a fantastic heroine. She is flawed and emotional but also fiercely honest and loyal. She’s the oldest in a large family, so she has had to fend for herself for a long time. She is all about rules and boundaries because those are what keep her steady. Her insecurities are due to the fact that she feels like a freak with all of her idiosyncrasies, and she doesn’t believe she is good enough for Wyatt. The mixed signals she gives Wyatt are frustrating, but they make sense; she can’t align her heart and mind, and for someone who needs order to keep her emotions in check, it is a difficult situation for both of them.
Wyatt is a tormented hero. The war and death of his friend really did a number on him, and when the one person he has been wishing for every day during the war doesn’t feel the same way he does about her, he doesn’t cope well. Wyatt hangs out with the wrong crowd, which leads him down a destructive path that threatens not only his relationship with Lacey but with his friends as well. Wyatt’s journey through his grief and addiction is not an easy one, but as long as he has Lacey by his side, “where there’s a will, there’s a way around it.” All they need to do is “be brave. Be strong. Have faith.”
Wish for You is story about fighting through personal demons and insecurities in order to live a healthy and enjoyable life. It’s about being with the person you love regardless of what others may think and being secure enough with yourself to take what you want without regrets. Lacey and Wyatt’s relationship, for me, is the best in the series, and so worth the read.
