Adult Contemporary Romance

Released April 21, 2014

Synopsis

Brody Markham has endured a nightmare, spending the last five years in prison and losing everything that was dear to him. Now he’s back home, trying to survive in a world he doesn’t recognize anymore. While his family and friends desperately try to reach through to him, he shelters himself further and further away from their love.

Alyssa Myers has worked her entire life to distance herself from the luxurious and privileged lifestyle in which she was raised. Running her non-profit agency, The Haven, she is content to spend her days helping abused animals find sanctuary, which fulfills her in a way that money just can’t buy.

Maybe it’s that she recognizes in Brody some of the same characteristics she sees in her homeless wards, but Alyssa is powerless to stop her personal quest to make Brody whole again.

While Brody struggles to surface from the darkness, Alyssa tries to protect her heart in case he’s not willing to accept the light that she offers him.

Sensual couple

Review

Sawyer Bennett once again proves what a fantastic storyteller she is in her new release, Make It a Double. This is Book 2 in the Last Call Series, but it can be read as a standalone. Those of us who read On The Rocks were introduced to Brody, Hunter’s antisocial twin brother; not much information is given about him, only that he recently got out of prison and is finding it difficult to be a part of society again. In Book 1, he has one encounter with Alyssa, one of Gabby’s best friends, and it sets up the tension that exists between them at the beginning of their story. Despite Brody and Alyssa’s rocky start, the time that Brody spends doing community service at Alyssa’s Animal Shelter, The Haven, helps him to realize just how wrong his assumptions were about her, and in his attempt to make amends, they form a bond that helps to heal them both.

The best part about this text is it is character driven; yes, there’s some angst and outside drama, but at the heart of the story is how Brody and Alyssa grow as both individuals and as a couple. Brody is a tortured soul with many regrets. Spending 5 years locked away definitely hardens him, but as Alyssa slowly peels his walls away, readers are left with a compassionate man who has experienced more pain and loss than most at his age, but somehow, he still manages to work through the torment and make his family proud. Alyssa is a perfect match for Brody; they may seem too different on the outside, but the love and kindness that she offers to Brody is exactly what he needs to move on from all of the hardships he has faced. She is an incredibly strong woman whose rich family doesn’t understand why she chooses the kind of life that she does. She’s an extremely likable character because she’s not your typical rich girl; she’s independent, strong, and driven. She uses her money for the benefit of others and makes a difference every day. The fact that Brody and Alyssa are able to lean on each other to get them through the hard times with family, friends, or just life in general makes them a great pair.

I’ve read a ton of Sawyer Bennett’s books, and all of them are fantastic reads with well developed characters, exciting storylines, and great chemistry between the couples, but there’s just something about Brody and Alyssa’s story that puts it at the top of my list. Maybe it’s the way they ease into a relationship or the fact that despite everything that is going against them, they overcome it together as a team without the slightest fracture in their bond – it’s those reasons and so much more. The story sucked me in from the beginning and kept me reading early into the morning. Brody and Alyssa’s path to love is definitely a remarkable one and I can’t even tell you how much you are going to love the Epilogue. Fantastic Job, Sawyer Bennett. As long as you keep writing, you will have a fan for life:)

A copy of the text was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.

5+ poison apples!
