Can giving up the one thing she always thought she needed – control – be what truly sets her free and allows her to fully live again? Lena (“little loner”) has a past and a body full of scars. For much of her life, she has existed, not really lived. She’s a functioning adult who works, but she tries to remain unnoticed because she fears getting close to anyone. When she meets Eric unexpectedly at a sports bar, the control she usually has over her mind and her body relents, and she allows herself to feel a plethora of emotions besides panic. Little does she know that this chance encounter will change her life dramatically and give her the freedom to be herself.
Eric has a past and a difficult present to deal with as well, and even though it is not as tragic as Lena’s, it still forces him to hide who he is, which is why Lena enters his life at just the right time. Eric offers Lena a safe way to give up control and it gives him the outlet he needs to gain control in the midst of trying to care for his orphaned nephew. The BDSM lifestyle focuses on trust, and this is not something that Lena gives freely, but Eric feels a connection to Lena that he hasn’t felt in quite some time, so he’s willing to do the work that’s required to get Lena to see that being a submissive and giving up control is actually quite empowering. As Eric helps Lena work through her issues, he understands her limits and works to be the Dom she needs to feel like she can finally breathe again.
Overall, I enjoyed Lena and Eric’s story. At times, the story seemed a bit slow, and I don’t feel like I have a clear enough picture of who Eric is as a man and a Dom, but I think that might be because this is supposed to be about Lena’s growth and transition. He plays an extremely important role in the story and he helps Lena to heal, but it starts with her willingness to submit to him and experience all that his lifestyle allows her to feel without staying inside her head. There are parts of the storyline that are a bit unclear, but it looks like this might be the first part of a series and maybe readers will be given more insight into Eric as the series continues.
If you’re a reader who wants to learn about the BDSM lifestyle and experience it through a dormant submissive and her patient and caring Dom, this is a definitely a book I would suggest for you to read.
