Review:
Distractions…that’s what First Sergeant Rafe Murano has used to ease his broken heart and numb his mind from the memories that try to consume him. Booze and one night stands have become his favorite pastimes – anything to prevent him from feeling. Rafe’s a man who wears his heart on his sleeve, and he gave it away to the wrong woman. When he falls, he falls hard; that’s why his life has turned into whiskey and women.
“‘Distractions are kind of my specialty. They’re part of the job description.'”
Throughout Fallon Kelly’s life, she has had to play a role – one that usually requires her to wear a mask and remain devoid of any emotions. While it has allowed her to become the successful business woman that she is, it has also left her emotionally damaged. Too many people have turned their back on her, so she refuses to allow anyone close enough; she controls every aspect of her life because that’s how she ensures no one hurts her again.
But what happens when Rafe finds his ultimate distraction – the one woman who distracts him enough that he begins to see the mistakes of his past for what they truly are? Will he decide that he wants Fallon to be the one who permanently distracts him, or are her walls and his unresolved issues too much to overcome?
Rafe Murano is a complicated man. His past/current actions will make readers question the man he truly is. He’s a man who understands the importance of family; yet, his choices seem to contradict that idea. He’s loyal and protective, but that only seems to put him in a situation that ultimately ruins him. There’s a lot of layers to what makes Rafe the man that he is, and I think part of the reason why I’m so torn about him is because the book doesn’t really give the closure that he needs to become the man he ultimately is at his core. That part is only skimmed over, and as a reader, it’s difficult to not be given the whole picture.
I love Fallon. Because she’s taught early on that she can only depend on herself, she’s led a pretty lonely life. She’s extremely independent but that comes with a whole lot of loneliness. She doesn’t truly understand what her life’s been missing until Rafe takes her control away and makes her feel again. As her relationship with Rafe continues, readers can see her grow to trust Rafe and give herself to him in every way. She’s both classy and sassy, which is what a kick ass heroine should be.
I really enjoyed reading A Beautiful Distraction. There are parts that are a bit underdeveloped, but it’s still clear what causes Rafe and Fallon to live the lives that they do. Rafe’s past might not sit well with readers, but Kelsie Leverich does a great job of getting into Rafe’s head and understanding it from his perspective. The connection between Rafe and Fallon is electric, and the sex scenes illustrate how what at first is merely a means to distract turns into something that both need to mend their hearts and start living again. Kelsie’s Hard Feelings Series does a great job at illustrating how complicated men work to survive in both their private and professional lives.
