The Dare:

From #1 New York Times Bestselling Author Rachel Van Dyken, comes the third and final book in the New York Time’s Bestselling Bet Series…

Boring Beth Lynn has always lived up to her nickname… until she wakes up in a hotel bed next to a sexy as sin state senator she re-connected with at a wedding the previous night.

The biggest problem? She can’t seem to remember anything about the night before except for crying into a box of cookies, and she’s pretty sure Grandma Nadine slipped something in her drink. And what should have been a one night stand turns into a six day adventure when Grandma whisks them off to Hawaii to save them from the ensuing media firestorm.

Jace isn’t looking for commitment — he believes he made that clear when he left the wedding with Beth. Then again, he can’t remember much of anything other than the way her skin felt beneath his hands. Now he’s stuck with her at some lame couple’s retreat and trying his hardest to fight the attraction only a woman like Beth could invoke.

He doesn’t think it can get any worse.

But one spider attack… A donkey ride from hell… And an unfortunate episode with Viagra tea — and there’s one thing Jace knows for sure: He should never have agreed to Grandma Nadine’s suggestion in the first place.

Because if this isn’t paradise, and it isn’t a vacation — that only leaves one option.

Survival.

But to make it through alive… they might lose their hearts in the process.

Review

It’s bad enough when Grandma Nadine is scheming and matchmaking on her own, but when she pulls in the whole Titus clan along with anyone else she can use to make her plan a success, everything gets wilder, crazier, and downright hilarious.

I don’t think I’ve ever loved a secondary character as much as I love Grandma Titus. She’s in her eighties, and she’s as full of life as someone in her twenties. She’s loud, outspoken, and as feisty as can be. She loves her family fiercely, especially her two grandsons, so she started up her antics to ensure their happiness. Now that Travis and Jake are settled, she’s moving on to two people who may not be blood related, but they’re her grandchildren nonetheless, and she wants them to have their happy endings as much as she wanted her own two grandsons to have theirs.

Beth, Char’s sister, is an intelligent thirty year old woman who believes she has nothing to offer a significant other, but she clearly doesn’t see the woman staring back at her. Her high school experience was humiliating, leading her to believe she’s “chargeless,” lacking anything that would draw a man her way. But that doesn’t stop her from wanting the fairy tale ending; she wants the romance…the knight in shining armor. She thought she found it once, but he ended up being a frog or at least that’s what she kept telling herself.

Jace is one of the Titus brother’s good friends. He’s the youngest Oregon senator whose career is all important to him. He was once burned by love, and so now he’s married to his career because that’s the only thing he can depend on. He doesn’t believe in second chances, so true love is no longer in the cards for him, and he’s come to accept it. That is until Grandma Nadine works her magic and reintroduces him to the woman of his dreams.

Six days…that’s the amount of time Grandma has to make her plan work out.

Six days…that’s how long Beth is going to put “Boring Beth” away and have fun.

Six days…that’s the length of time Jace has to give Beth her fairy tale.

It may not seem like much time, but boy are those days jammed pack with drama, high jinks, crazy incidences, and a whole lot of sexual tension.

But can a woman who sees herself as nothing go all in and claim her super hero? And, can a man who doesn’t believe in love anymore give the one that got away a chance to prove another try is worth the risk? Find out for yourself and one-click The Dare!

There’s not a series by Rachel Van Dyken that I don’t love. She’s a talented and diverse writer who puts everything she has into her stories. In the The Bet series, she creates extremely relatable and complex characters. Beth is someone twho a lot of readers can relate to. Her self perception is off kilter, and she believes she’s destined to become a cat lady because no one wants her for herself. I loved watching her let loose while on vacation; she’s always embraced who she is, but she’s now starting to realizing that how she sees herself may not be the true reflection.

There are quite a few times in the story where I wanted to do bodily harm to Jace, but his reaction to being burned by love and his need for public acceptance are both realistic, even if they frustrated the heck out of me. Beth sees him as Thor, and he definitely has some of his attributes. He leads others and sacrifices himself for the good of the cause, but any super hero is not complete without the woman he loves, and Jace needs to realize that before it’s too late.

There’s never a dull moment in The Dare. What Beth and Jace have to endure at the hands of those trying to give them their happily ever after is laugh out loud funny. This book has everything that romance readers love – romance, angst, sexual tension, a great storyline, and fantastic main and secondary characters. It’s a definite must read!

Excerpt

“What the hell?” A deep voice rumbled from somewhere underneath me.

I closed my eyes.

“You can’t close your eyes. I already know you’re awake.”

“This is all a dream,” I muttered, my voice sounding scratchy and unfamiliar. “I’m a figment of your imagination. Swear. In two seconds you’re going to feel—”

“Shame,” the voice said. “Isn’t that what you were going to say? Absolute mind-shattering shame?”

I opened my eyes. “What?” I should have left them closed.

Really. It’s the small things in life that get you. Close your mouth. Close your eyes. Pretend you don’t see that. Crap. Some things just can’t be forgotten.

And that face?

Those lips?

Bright blue eyes?

Blond hair that fell just below his ears?

Officially stored into my permanent memory until I died, alone with all my cats.

“I was kidding.” Mr. Sexy chuckled. “I just thought I’d throw that in there to make you feel more comfortable.”

Right, because lying across a complete stranger in nothing but a smile screamed, Hey, let’s joke around. I’m game. I quickly grabbed at the sheet and pulled away, kneeing the poor bastard in the process.
