“I own you. I have the piece of paper to prove it. It’s undeniable and unbreakable. You belong to me until you’ve paid off your debts.”
Nila Weaver’s family is indebted. Being the first born daughter, her life is forfeit to the first born son of the Hawks to pay for sins of ancestors past. The dark ages might have come and gone, but debts never leave. She has no choice in the matter.
She is no longer free.
Jethro Hawk receives Nila as an inheritance present on his twenty-ninth birthday. Her life is his until she’s paid off a debt that’s centuries old. He can do what he likes with her—nothing is out of bounds—she has to obey.
There are no rules. Only payments.
A modern day Dark Erotic Romance
Review
I wish I could see into Pepper Winters’ mind and figure out how she comes up with her fantastically dark and gritty reads. She is truly a master at sending her characters and her readers to the darkest corners of their psyche and showing them how truly devious the human mind can be. Debt Inheritance is one of the most creative storylines that I’ve read in quite some time; the way that Nila and Jethro’s story plays out in book 1 illustrates how much each of them is the product of the environment they’ve grown up in, and it also reinforces that the debt the Weaver female first borns owe will always be paid in full to the Hawk’s family in any dark and twisted way they see fit.
Nila Weaver has lived a sheltered life for the past 24 years thanks to her father and her twin brother, Vaughn. She’s always felt protected and privileged, but due to the overprotective men in her life, she is also extremely innocent about how truly dark people can be. She doesn’t quite understand that looks can be deceiving when it comes to members of the opposite sex, especially someone like Jethro Hawk – the ultimate chameleon.
Now that Jethro Hawk is 29 years old, it’s his time to do his duty for his family and claim his inheritance. In order to uphold his family’s honor, he is going to make Nila pay her family’s debt by destroying her little by little by any means necessary. This is where Jethro’s true power lies – Nila must bend to Jethro and his family’s will or suffer even more than she already will at their hands.
Nila doesn’t quite understand the repercussions of her father handing her over to Jethro until she arrives at the Hawks compound and is told her fate. At first she doesn’t understand the legality of this punishment, but when the historical background is provided, Nila realizes that her fate was sealed over 600 years ago. Nila’s life has gone from a gilded cage where she was protected and loved to being confined with a group of malicious men who see her as nothing more than a silly toy – one to be used and abused continually.
Nila’s going to have to dig deep and find the strength to endure all of the torment she will receive while imprisoned. Regardless of what she faces at her oppressors’ hands, if she can remain “untouchable” on the inside, she might have a chance of making it through being broken and used on the outside, but at the end of book 1, she’s definitely starting to fall prey to her weaknesses, and I for one can’t blame her. Nothing could have prepared her for what she is about to face, so it’s hard to say at this point if she’s going to make it out of this situation alive, especially when the legal document suggests a much different fate.
Jethro – he’s definitely a “predator in sheep’s clothing.” He’s a polished and refined gentleman at first glance, but then if someone looks deeper, it’s easy to see the darkness that surrounds him. His position as first born dictates that he’s the one to control and collect the debt from Nila, and he’s enough of a sadistic bastard to enjoy her pain and suffering. But here’s where things get a bit muddled…Nila makes Jethro lose control – something that he’s always prided himself on maintaining, so if Nila can find a way to draw that issue out further, perhaps she stands a chance of getting him to see her as more than just a debt he’s collecting – an inheritance he’s claiming, but right now, it’s too soon to tell if that will be the case.
There are so many layers to both the storyline and the characters themselves that it will be interesting to see where Pepper takes it. At this point, Jethro is the proverbial anti-hero who, no doubt, has a few latent good guy attributes, but because of how he’s been raised, it will definitely take a lot to allow those traits to surface. Nila is counting on just that happening, but I’m not sure if it’s just her naivety speaking or a way to keep her hopes up despite all that she’s already faced and likely will face later.
Debt Inheritance is definitely a complete and utter mindfuck, and I loved every minute of it…Jethro is definitely a dark bastard, but he’s also very intriguing. I don’t know if Nila’s feistiness is going to be her savior or her downfall; I guess it will depend on what Jethro’s plans are for her and how much she can get him to react to her and see her as more than a plaything – someone to punished…a debt to be extracted.

Excerpt: Debt Inheritance: Meet Jethro & Nina
ONE – Nina’s POV
“Huge disappointment, Ms. Weaver.” His cold glare sent a snowstorm wiping away the bonfire in my belly. “I’m done playing games, so cut the bullshit. Time to begin the day.” His voice gave no room for interpretation. A cold draft shot down my back.
My brief reprieve from debts and horrible Hawks was over. I’d been shown something I desperately wanted, but denied it because I failed to please him.
“You could teach me…show me how…” I couldn’t make eye contact with him. Mortification painted my cheeks for both admitting I was clueless and asking a monster to coach me.
Jethro laughed. “You think that will save you from what’s coming? Was that your little plan? To make me fuck you in the hopes I might feel something for you?”

TWO – Jethro’s POV
I stood up slowly, clicking my tongue. “Ah, ah, ah, Ms. Weaver. Don’t take that tone with me. You’re the failure. You’re the prisoner. You take what I give you. You do not assume to have any say or authority. That includes listening to everything I deem important to tell you.” Ghosting to a stop in front of her, I murmured, “Is that quite understood?”
I flexed my muscles, welcoming back the soothing chillness of control. I hadn’t liked stepping outside my confines of civility. Things got messy when silence was disrupted. Things got rushed when tempers rose and curses flowed.
And I didn’t want to rush her undoing. I wanted to savour it. Devour it.
