Review
The month of August has been a great reading month for me. I’ve had the opportunity to read new releases by fantastic authors whose stories have been raved about since their first book released, and while I have most of them on my TBR list, I haven’t had the chance to read one until now. When I looked in my inbox and saw that Alessandra Torre had sent me an ARC of her newest release, Black Lies, I knew I needed to find time in my schedule for this one because the synopsis alone had me hooked. I’ve heard a lot about her edgy stories and the fluidity of her writing, so I was eager to dive into the characters and the world she created in Black Lies, and boy, I was not disappointed! All of the praise that I’ve read about her writing is much deserved, and I now have another go to author.
Layana Fairmont’s warning in the synopsis about her story being one readers can’t conceivably understand until they experience it for themselves through Layana’s eyes is absolutely correct. All preconceived notions of cheating and the judgments that come along with it need to be dispelled from the onset, focusing on what’s beneath the surface and on how most things can never be taken at face value if they are to be truly understood.
For 25 years, Layana has been a lady in waiting, but not like most would think. When she turns 25, she gains access to her trust fund and becomes her own person – something that she hasn’t been allowed to do since birth. Her mother has very clear ideas on the type of life Layana should lead and the type of man she should married, but Layana is not her mother nor is she anything like the affluent society she is a member of; she wants more out of life than what money or influence can buy. She understands the necessity for them, but she doesn’t want to live her life according to mandates she doesn’t believe in. Layana wants to find a man who completes her…who loves her fiercely and sees her as an equal partner. She wants passion and loyalty. She wants to feel fully connected to someone and share everything openly and honestly. That’s the type of life she craves and feels she deserves, and she’ll do what it takes to make it happen.
Enter Brant Sharp. On the surface, he seems like Layana’s perfect partner. Yes, he has his own quirks, but he adores her and, at first, puts her wants and needs above anyone else’s, ensuring that she knows how much she means to him and how invested he is in their relationship. Slowly, though, Layana begins to realize that Brant is a fragmented man – only showing parts of himself to her. His work consumes him and drives him, which, for the most part, is fine with her, but when it begins to interfere with their life together and the times apart become more frequent than any time together, their connection begins to fracture, and Layana is left loving a man who’s not really there anymore, at least in the ways she craves him to be.
And then she meets Lee. Lee is a refreshing change from Brant. In a way, he’s Brant’s antithesis. He’s passionate and consuming…demanding and controlling. He makes her crave his body and his company. She needs him in her life, but at the same time, she still loves Brant and is committed to her relationship with him, which leaves her life in limbo, juggling two men that she feels she ultimately needs to complete her. Two men provide her with the complete relationship package that she’s looking for, and she can’t give either of them up. But what happens when she’s forced to choose? What happens when the lies become too much to bear and everything gets so out of control that there’s no going back to the person you used to be or the relationship you once had? Where Layana and her two men will be when secrets are laid bare is something readers will have to find out on their own, but it’s a resolution that few will likely suspect.
Black Lies is not your typical romance story, and that’s what makes it an amazing read. The way that Alessandra Torre crafts Layana’s journey and the intricacy of the plotlines will keep readers on their toes until all of the lies and secrets are exposed, and by the time they are finished reading, readers will understand that Layana’s choices were actually made to save everyone involved. It’s a story that poses the question of what someone would do for the forever kind of love they’ve always wanted, and I think it also answers it – ANYTHING.
