About Hard To Hold On To:
Jenna has never met anyone like Easy. She can’t describe how he makes her feel–and not just because he saved her life. No, the stirrings inside her reach far beyond gratitude.
As the pair are thrust together while chaos reigns around them, they both know one thing: the things in life most worth having are the hardest to hold on to.
Review
No one can truly understand the emotional damage that occurs after experiencing a traumatic event unless they’ve gone through such an experience. Because PTSD harms the mind and wages an internal battle instead of an external one, the effects may not be well known or shared until it’s too late. Hard To Hold On To, Laura Kaye’s newest novella in her Hard Ink series, explores the demons that threaten to destroy Edward “Easy” Cantrell due to his PTSD and the effects and aftermath of the rescue of Jenna, Sarah’s younger sister on all involved.
Jenna is safely back with the men who helped rescue her and the women who stand by them, but the one person she feels most at ease with is Easy. There’s something about him that relaxes her and keeps her nightmares and panic at bay, which, in turn, helps Easy soothe his tortured soul at least for a little while because he feels needed – something that he hasn’t felt in quite some time. The guilt Jenna feels over putting her sister in the position she had to endure for many years is overwhelming, but Easy also helps her to try and stay focused on the here and now and recovering from what has happened to her. The added pressure of the past and for that matter the future is something that needs to be dealt with, but Jenna’s physical and mental strength needs to improve before that occurs, and Easy recognizes that and does his best to help her focus on what’s most important.
But despite Jenna being Easy’s focal point, he still struggles with his self worth and the quilt and shame he feels over not helping his best friend. He’s a depressed man who feels like everything is impossible and that leaves him with very low self worth, questioning why he deserves to be alive when so many others died.
Can these two guilty souls find a way to let go of the darkness that surrounds them and hold on to each other, or will the grasp that the negative thoughts have on them be too much to bear?
Laura Kaye packed an immense amount of emotion in Easy and Jenna’s novella. The way she writes Easy’s thoughts and feelings allows readers to truly understand how deeply depressed he is and how little he thinks of himself. Jenna becomes his guiding light and helps him to realize there are things he needs to do to improve his mental state. These two definitely met at a time in their lives where they desperately needed the other one, and hopefully, from this new beginning for the both of them, the healing can continue.
This series just keeps getting better!
