Synopsis

My name is Tate. And all my life I have kept secrets. The type of secrets that haunt your dreams at night. I wake up hating the world, and I go to sleep knowing that the memories of my past will visit me-reminding me that I once was weak and a coward. I’ll never be that person again.
But there is one person who has made me think there may be more to life than hatred and revenge. Missy fills me with hope. But hope is what makes you weak, makes you think you can be better, and it’s a lie.
A man like me deserves to be alone forever because one day, I will come face to face with my past, and I will destroy it. Even if that means destroying myself in the process.
But what I didn’t know was that she has nightmares of her own-because of me. For the first time in my life, I want to save someone. But how can I save her when I can’t even save myself?

Review

“There’s nothing wrong with the darkness, Tate. That’s the only time the stars get to shine.”

This quote epitomizes Missy’s drive to prove to Tate that the darkness that consumes him doesn’t have to taint him or define him as a beast because regardless of how he sees himself, he’ll always have someone behind him pushing him towards the light…fighting to show him what his heart already knows. But to get to where Tate can recognize his own self worth and give in to his feelings for Missy without feeling like he’ll ruin her is not an easy feat, especially after their one night stand in Vegas.

It wasn’t easy witnessing Tate’s mistreatment of Missy in the conclusion to Slade and Sam’s story. The moment he gave into his desire for Missy is the day he crushed her world and sent her off feeling used and completely broken. For a year, they haven’t had much interaction. Tate has gone back to using girls for a way to shut out the bad memories and to get over Missy, and Missy has secluded herself from almost everyone, dealing with her own pain for what could have been. But Tate isn’t someone Missy can just let go of…she’s loved him since she was 17, and he’s always going to be the one she can’t forget – the best mistake she ever made.

Tate’s a complex character dealing with a past that threatens to consume him on a daily basis. He’s full of hatred and rage, and he doesn’t know how to channel those feelings in a healthy manner. He feels tainted by his childhood, and regardless of his true feelings for Missy, he won’t let himself give into his desire for her because he feels like he’ll destroy everything that is pure and good about her. Tate knows how special Missy is and he doesn’t want to be responsible for shattering her life. But what he doesn’t realize is that that has already happened, and every time he pushes her away and breaks her heart, he further risks ruining her despite the fact that she’ll always be unforgettable to him.

I had a hard time with Tate in Book 3 and he continued to be a contradiction to me in Unforgettable. I’m glad Shantel Tessier gives readers insight into his childhood and what he went through because, without it, I don’t think I would have seen him as the hero in this story. Tate’s cruelty is something I had a hard time getting past regardless of the knowledge of his backstory. I wanted him to fight harder to get out of the darkness and let Missy help him live again. But I also understand what traumatic incidences do to the human psyche, so while I wanted to throttle Tate on numerous occasion, I also wanted to wrap him in my arms and tell him that everything was going to be okay.

Unforgettable is a great addition to Shantel Tessier’s Undescribable series. Told in first person through both Tate and Missy’s alternating perspectives, it becomes clear to readers how that night in Vegas affected them on numerous levels and what they both need to work through in order to have any chance of making a relationship with each other happen. Just like the other three books in the series, Tate and Missy’s story is a great mix of steam, suspense, and angst. I love the fact that we get to catch up with Slade and Sam and I can’t wait to see what Shantel has in store for Parker’s story. I can’t wait to see a woman bring him to his knees.
