Freedom excerpt

Review

To bikers, there’s nothing like the freedom of the open road. Just them and their bikes and the limitless pavement offered up to ease the mind and free the soul. But for Jules, someone who has never really belonged in that lifestyle, she doesn’t know that feeling; her life stifles her, in a way, because she’s had to take on a huge amount of responsibility at a young age without Scratch, the love of her life by her side or the security of his club to protect and help her. Scratch’s brother, Jaden, blames Jules for Scratch’s death and wants nothing to do with her or his almost three year old niece, Sophie. Jules returns to her hometown to help a friend in need, but she ends up being the one who needs help – with a controlling and obsessive ex who wants her back at any cost and a lust for a man who loathes her, Jules’ plate is too full to feel like she’s free to live her life on her own terms but hell if that isn’t exactly what she wants to have.

Throughout the previous two books, Jaden has always been the one who seems to live life freely, not taking anything too seriously except the biker lifestyle.  But with Jules’ return, readers see a bitter and vengeful side of him. His hatred for Jules runs deep, and he feels like he has good reason to hate her. But his problems don’t just center around his brother’s accident and blame he places on her. It goes back to Jules picking his brother over him and the lingering feelings that he’s always had for Jules aren’t something that have gone away, which drives his loathing even farther. But if Jaden doesn’t reign in his anger and figure out a way to balance both his loathing and lust for Jules, he might not have a chance of making things right with her or having a relationship with his niece who is completely innocent in all of this mess.

As if things couldn’t get any more complicated for the Nordic Lords MC, now they have to contend with Jules’ crazy stalker ex who threatens not only Jules but her daughter as well who has come to mean a hell of a lot to the burly bikers, and they don’t take kindly to others threatening someone they consider one of their own. Jaden steps up in a big way for Jules during this time, taking control of the situation and ensuring their safety, which helps to mend some of the hurt between them. There’s no denying their feelings for one another anymore, but there’s still a lot of obstacles standing in Jules and Jaden’s way, namely Jaden’s deceased brother and the sense of betrayal they both feeling for wanting to be together as well as Jules’ fear that Jaden’s dangerous lifestyle will lead to her losing another person she loves. Nothing’s ever been easy for these two, so why should it start now, but if Jules and Jaden want the freedom to be with the one person they can no longer live without, they’re going to have to put their fears and self loathing aside and hold on tight because nothing worth having ever comes without risks.

Stacey Lynn’s Nordic Lords MC series definitely brings the grit and suspense to each and every story. Each hero has his own demons to work through, but he does so with his kickass heroine and his biker brothers at his back. Jaden is just as alpha as Daemon and Ryker, and he completely understands what it means to take care of his own, but for a lot of the story, he had a hard time feeling like he had anything to offer Jules and Sophie. Add that to the misplaced hatred he had for Jules, and it was bound to be a jacked up situation before it ever got any better. There were times in the beginning/middle of the story where I wanted to knock Jaden in the head and tell him to wake up and see what’s staring him right in the face, but it was something he had to figure out for himself because until he was willing to listen to Jules, no one was going to change his mind about her.  Jules stands strong throughout each and every encounter with the brooding Jaden and even during the craziness with her ex, but a girl can only take so much. She fights and fights to make her own way, but it seems like at every turn, there’s something preventing that from happening. I don’t blame her for being freaked out about her feelings for Jaden, but I also felt like she needed the freedom to see that it was okay to act on those feelings because she deserved to be happy and find a place to truly call home.

I loved Jules and Jaden’s story, and I can’t wait to find out the mystery behind my favorite Aussie, Finn, in book 4.

“I would have given it to you last night. Anything you wanted, you turned those lying innocent eyes on me and I would have fucked you so hard you’d forget all about Scratch.”

“That’s…” I swallowed and his lips grazed the hollow of my throat. “That’s an asshole thing to say, Jaden.”

“I know.” He pulled away, our noses almost touching, our harsh breathing mingling together. “Good thing in the light of day I remember what a selfish, lying killer you are, isn’t it?”
