Seven years ago, my life changed forever. One accident and the person I saw in the mirror no longer resembled the woman I used to be. I was lost and confused inside my own body. I felt alone and disconnected from the world, carrying the incredible weight of guilt and loss that wasn’t even mine to harbor.

Then fate led me to Leo James. He taught me that crazy could be perfectly normal and it shouldn’t hurt to breathe. Don’t get me wrong. Leo isn’t perfect. He has his own cross to bear, and the truth is, that might be why I fell for him in the first place. But despite everything he does for me, learning to forgive myself is infinitely harder than overlooking the flaws of another.

Now, the secrets and lies of our past have begun to dictate our future—threatening to ruin us before we get the chance to try. Perhaps we were cursed from the start. Or maybe, just maybe, the remnants of our fractured lives will fit together to form one whole, where love isn’t questioned and being happy is…well, easy.

Can a second broken soul be enough to fill the voids of my own? Or will such scarred pasts prove too much for our love alone to overcome?

**Each book in this series can be read as a stand alone.**

 Review

Wrecked and Ruined – those are the perfect two words to describe the main characters, Sarah Erickson and Leo James, in Broken Course, Book 3 in Aly Martinez’s Wrecked and Ruined series. Both Sarah and Leo’s pasts have left them broken and guilty; they feel like their previous choices have defined their present, and they don’t know how to get away from the self loathing that they feel each and every day. Separately, they over think, sabotaging any stability that they may have with their overwhelming feelings of remorse for their actions. But when they’re together, they’re better; Leo knows exactly how to quiet the voices in Sarah’s head and just being able to help her soothes Leo in a way that no one can truly understand but himself. Sarah and Leo’s new selves are the perfect match, but they’re both harboring facts about their pasts because they’re afraid of what might happen if they learned the truth. Can two lives that were irrevocably changed find a new course together, or will the connection that Sarah and Leo have created fracture when the past reveals itself?

Now, I’ll admit, I don’t know the Sarah from the previous books. This is my first time meeting her because I haven’t read the other two stories, and I know from reading other reviews that readers have had a love/hate relationship with her from the start of the series. I’m not sure how I would react to her in this book, knowing all that she has done previously, but all I feel for her in Broken Course is sympathy. For seven years, Sarah’s life has been nothing but struggle and devastation. In one night, her life drastically changed, and there was no going back from it. She’s clearly suffered since the accident, emotionally and psychologically, and who’s to say how anyone else would react when given the circumstances surrounding everything. She’s finally gotten her “new life” on track and isn’t that what everyone deserves? This new version of Sarah may still be a little bent due to the events of her past, but she’s slowly finding her own place in life with her family and friends by her side, and she’s feeling more than she’s felt for a really long time, thanks to Leo James, the alpha male who pursues her and shows her that life does go on and happiness can be attained even after a harrowing past.

Leo James – he’s one protective man, which makes sense given his earlier and current profession. He wears his scars internally, suffering silently with the guilt that ways him down. He holds himself responsible for circumstances that were out of his control, and he tortures himself with everything that he should have done but didn’t do. His connection to Sarah is his lifeline. It allows his protective instinct to come out and it soothes his soul to be able to be there for someone when he wasn’t before. He understands Sarah’s idiosyncrasies, and his calming and patient demeanor holds her together when she desperately wants to fall apart. His past haunts him, but with Sarah by his side, he can endure it.

Broken Course is an amazing story about second chances and becoming the person one is truly meant to be. It’s about finding the one person who despite knowing all of your flaws still cherishes every day together. It’s about emotional growth and the ups and downs that go with dealing with a tragic past. It’s about the strength to keep fighting when all you want to do is let the darkness in and succumb to the pain. It’s about stealing back your life when it seems like all life wants to do is take it away.

It’s a sexy, emotional, and humorous story that is well worth the read!
