“You say I’ll never own you. If I win—you willingly give me that right. You sign not only the debt agreement, but another—one that makes me your master until your last breath is taken. You do that, and I’ll give you this.”

Nila Weaver’s family is indebted. Stolen, taken, and bound not by monsters but by an agreement written over six hundred years ago, she has no way out.

She belongs to Jethro as much as she denies it.

Jethro Hawk’s patience is running out. His inheritance gift tests, challenges, and surprises him—and not in good ways. He hasn’t leashed her but he thinks he might’ve found a way to bind her forever.

Debts are mounting. Payment waiting.

Review

Weavers and Hawks – two families ensconced in a bitter hatred that will never end as long as there’s a female Weaver to pay the family’s debt in blood, sweat, and tears.

Nila Weaver and Jethro Hawk are the newest heirs to inherit the debt’s legacy, but these two players are quite different from the ones that have come before them, and despite the known outcome, this time around, the “Weaver Whore” isn’t willing to stop fighting for her freedom; she’s not willing to become complacent and accept her Weaver destiny. She’s willing to fight ice with fire – a fire she never knew she had because up until this point, her life has been sheltered by the two men in her life who are supposed to have her best interests at heart, but Nila soon realizes that she’s a different person without them in her corner, and she likes this version of herself because it just might give her an advantage in conquering the cold beast, Jethro Hawk.

In the first book, Debt Inheritance, Pepper Winters sets the stage for her readers, helping us to understand the history behind the debt and the players in this deadly game of life and death. It’s a sadistic world that Winters creates in Hawks’ compound, but it’s necessary to understand exactly where Nila, a young woman who really hasn’t been shown the deplorable and selfish nature of mankind, finds herself. At first, she’s terrified of the environment that is thrust upon her, and she has ever right to be, especially after the Hawks and their men manhandle her during the initiation, but in First Debt, Nila comes into her own and starts to understand what it’s going to take to give her a fighting chance at defeating Jethro at his own game. Nila evolves into a powerful seductress – one who is willing to fight dirty in order to make Jethro’s icy façade breakdown. But she’s also just as fragile as she was at the beginning of the series because she doesn’t truly understand the rules of the game she’s playing, and just when Nila thinks she has a handle on things, she acquires information or is put into a situation where the blinders come down, and she’s presented with a reality that’s very much what makes up anyone’s worst nightmares.

And then there’s Jethro Hawk. He is quite the conundrum. He is such a multifaceted character – one that I know Pepper Winters has really only scratched the surface of, and as the debts continue to be paid, he will only grow more complex, confusing readers even more with how we are supposed to feel about him. Jethro’s cold façade is definitely a product of his environment; he’s been molded this way since birth because as the oldest son, his duty is to his family and their legacy. But in First Debt, readers become privy to what Jethro struggles so much to hide, what he forces back to the depths of his psyche, so no one knows the man behind the mask – the man who feels more than anyone will ever know – a man who perhaps loathes being a Hawk but has no way to change his destiny. I don’t want to like Jethro – I don’t want to see how appealing he is or understand why Nila’s thoughts are consumed with the broody monster, but I am just as enthralled with Jethro as Nila is. But I don’t think I should be; in fact, I know I shouldn’t because his deceptiveness is going to leave me at a crossroads with him just like I’m sure Nila is feeling with the ideas that are revealed at the end of book two.

Nila and Jethro have two very different objectives in this game that pins Master vs. Toy; Puppeteer vs. Puppet, but when everything is said and done, I’m not sure which one will define which set of terms; Pepper Winters has yet to reveal that to readers, which only adds to the awesomeness of this series. Because just when readers think they have something figured out, a mindfuck of a plot twist is revealed, shattering any hope at understanding where the hell this Hawk and Weaver war will take Nila and Jethro and as an extension, readers as well.

This series is a definite must read, and I can’t wait to witness the life altering events of Second Debt. It can’t come soon enough.

Excerpt

A small gasp fell from my lips as his fingers kissed the paper-thin skin. His eyes held me hostage. The golden brown was now a swirling bronze, raging with the same demanding hunger I knew reflected in mine.

“This sort of reminds me of the forest,” I whispered. “The trees around us—no one else.” My words fell like petals, waiting for Jethro to crush them beneath his glossy shoe.

But…he didn’t.

Tracing one hand from my wrist, along the inside of my arm, and right to my throat, he fisted my ponytail. With intensity that stripped my soul to the very essence of who I was, he pulled my head back slowly, sensually, full of sexual power.

His eyes dropped to my mouth. “I’ll let you in on a little secret, Ms. Weaver.”

I panted, my neck straining against his hold, but I made no move to break the poignant awareness.

“You won that night, but I lied when I said it pissed me off.” His mouth dropped, his tongue licked my bottom lip with the barest of grazes.
