Review

Jacked is the perfect name for Adam Trent and Erin Novak’s story – two people whose souls are broken and find themselves in jacked up situations due to their pasts and their inability to let go of incidences that were out of their control.

Both Adam and Erin feel as if they have to atone for situations that irrevocably changed them and altered their mindset. They both hold their secrets tightly to the vest and never truly show themselves to anyone. It’s going to take a lot for either of them to let their guards down, especially when doing so would risk someone walking away without even looking back.

But in a twist of fate, these two people who deal with death and destruction on a daily basis will find a connection with one another that neither have felt before, and when their paths cross in rather unexpected ways, both Adam and Erin will have to figure out if they’re too “jacked up” to be in a committed relationship when half truths and an inescapable past constantly threaten to tear them apart before they even really get started.

Control – that’s what Adam and Erin’s lives thrive on. As a police detective and a doctor, they always have to be at the top of their games; their minds need to be on the alert at all times because it’s a matter of life and death each and every time they are on the job. With one impulsive act or miscalculated decision, lives can be lost, and neither of them want that on their conscience, not with what they both have already had to endure. But sometimes, things go awry regardless of how calculated every maneuver is, and this is the exact type of situation where Adam and Erin find their lives intersecting.

Adam Trent is definitely an alpha male. He’s a passionate man who loves his job and gives every part of himself to getting the job done and putting the bad guys away. His past is filled with loss, betrayal, and addiction, but he’s moved on from it all, for the most part, and his focus is solely on being the best detective he can be despite all the bullshit in the background threatening to turn him into something that he’s definitely not. He wasn’t looking for a committed relationship when Erin enters his life; in fact, he does everything he can to prevent anything starting up between them, despite his insane attraction to her. But the pull towards her is too great, so even though he doesn’t know if it’s the right decision to give into his desire for her, he can’t help but want her in his life because she makes him want to be a better man and makes him feel more than he’s ever felt before, providing a calming presence in a rather dark existence.

Erin Novak is a doctor driven to help others any way that she can. This has been his singular purpose since she was a teenager. She’s worked her ass off to prove to herself that her past cannot define her no matter how much it tries to pull her down. She’s compassionate, feisty, and in control at all times. But in terms of a personal life, she’s been knocked down too many times by men who only want one thing from her and then walk away, leaving her to pick up the pieces. Her attraction to Adam scares the shit out of her because it occurs quickly and it’s intense. She knows that if she gives her heart to Adam and he hurts her, she’ll never recover, which is why she walks on eggs shell at the beginning of their relationship. She’s used to being the one to hold everything together, so when her life starts spiraling out of control, she doesn’t know how to react, and when Adam steps up to help her carry the load, she’s afraid that she’s too far gone to prevent him from destroying her.

Boy have I missed Tina Reber’s writing. She has a way of effortlessly telling a story that draws readers in from the start because she fully immerses readers into the characters’ lives by providing concrete insights into their pasts and presents. There’s no doubt as to what the characters are thinking and feeling because Reber gives it to us through her first person perspectives and internal ramblings. Adam and Erin are extremely well developed characters, so even though readers may not like the things they say and do at times in the story, the actions make sense due to what we know about them.

The storyline is also well developed. It may seem slowing moving at first, but that’s because there are a lot of variables to describe and understand. There is a lot of back story and background information that needs to be hashed out in order for readers to get an accurate perception as to how each and every event coincides; without it, the story would be choppy, and when you’re dealing with two main characters who have high profile jobs and quite involved lives, all of that information is necessary to have. I loved the length of the story and the time it takes for Adam and Erin to trust each other enough to move forward despite all of the chaos that surrounds them.

Jacked is a fantastic start to the Trent Brothers series, and with the small preview readers get into Jason Trent’s story, I know I’m going to love book 2 as well.
