That’s how Ren and Ash have been living for the past six months when the events at the end of Beat forced Ash to take control and make choices that would alter both of their lives and leave each of them merely surviving apart.

Heartbroken, Ren does the only thing she can do; she throws herself into fighting and feeds the monster within by going to the Underground and becoming Reign of Terror – a fighter with nothing to lose because once again, she’s been left by the one person she thought she could count on…the one who was supposed to always be by her side because the love she and Ash shared could get them through anything.  But now she’s left trying to put her heart back together and act happy for becoming a somebody in her father’s eyes and the fighter world when all she wants is to mean something to the one man who no longer wants her.

But there are things that Ren was never privy to when it came to Ash’s life, and when someone reaches out to Ren to help revive Ash and be both his beat and his pulse, Ren’s going to have to decide if she’s willing to give Ash another chance and help him fight his demons by finally putting them to rest.

Amity Cross created one hell of a heroine in Ren, and readers witness her fighting spirit blossom and grow throughout Ren and Ash’s story. Cross does a great job of illustrating Ren’s emotional turmoil both before and after Ash returns. Externally, Ren is playing the dutiful daughter and fighter, dealing with her heartbreak however she can, but inside, Ren’s dying and her torment is show in her internal musings.

Ash has always been a bit of an enigma, and while readers are privy to information about his past and the events that changed his life, I still wanted a bit more insight…I wanted to understand what truly made him tick and why he made the decisions he did. Don’t get me wrong, I loved Ash; he’s everything Ren deserves when he finally gets his head on straight and I don’t begrudge his actions…I guess I just see him as this utterly complex character and I wanted to see all of his layers exposed…I wanted more of the sexy as sin fighter and the compulsions that he deals with.

Pulse is a great follow up to Beat. It’s sexy, suspenseful, and gritty, and it brings Ren and Ash’s story to a conclusion that readers will love, even if it leaves them wanting a bit more.

I do hope readers get more from this series because there’s quite a few secondary characters who I would love to see get their own story, especially if that means more Ren and Ash!
