A.R. Torre continues Deanna Madden’s mostly reclusive existence in Apt. 6E in her newest release, Do Not Disturb. Deanna’s self-imposed three year confinement expired when she left her apartment to right an injustice, which saved a girl’s life, but it also gave her an outlet for her compulsions…her dark tendencies – an avenue for her duplicity. But despite this act, she has found a way to regroup and refocus, starving her desires for blood lust and channeling her aggression in a different way. Deanna also formed a connection with her UPS driver, Jeremy Pacer, and she’s allowed him to become part of her life and expose her, in limited amounts, to the outside world, attempting to reacclimatize her to “normal” living and find out if her baser desires can be kept at bay with each new outside interaction.
The title itself has multiple meanings that affect not only Deanna’s life but also readers, due to the twists and turns that the storyline takes.
Deanna’s repressed urges are ruffled on multiple occasions as she learns to interact outside her small apartment, which could mean disaster for those around her.
Deanna agitates one of her online clients, which unsettles Deanna’s fairly mundane, because she locks herself in her apartment, life and could potentially put multiple lives in jeopardy due to his perverse and twisted needs.
Deanna’s disconcerted by her homicidal tendencies yet she can’t extinguish them; she wants Jeremy but can’t give herself fully to him partly because she doesn’t believe a secretive sex cam girl is good enough for him and partly because she doesn’t know if she’s capable of anything but dark emotions.
What disturbs me the most about this text and every other book by A.R. Torre that I’ve read is how absorbed I become in the dysfunction. It’s consuming because the writing draws me in and the multifaceted characters entwine my life with theirs as they struggle to cope with their dark tendencies, negating my outrage and compelling me to continue…to witness the beast take over or the impulses freed.
Deanna is an extremely intriguing character because she understands all facets of her issues; she knows her compulsions are wrong and that she needs a more constructive outlet for those impulses but it’s not that easy. She constantly fights against herself, and if readers take her at face value, there would be nothing redeeming about her. But Deanna is so much more than her dark inclinations, which is what Torre wants readers to understand and what she marvelously shows us through Deanna’s internal musings and even through Jeremy and Mike’s fascination with her. Deanna’s a walking contradiction due to her external appearance and her internal torment, which is what makes everything about Do Not Disturb complex and addicting.
