Review

Fractured and tortured…two words that definitely describe Cassie and Ethan as readers are provided more insight into how everything went so wrong between them. Like Cassie, I was hesitant to believe Ethan’s transformation, but through his journal entries and emails, I was allowed to truly understand why he destroyed everything he loved. I don’t blame Cassie for not giving into Ethan right away; she’s been broken twice by him before and if it happens again, she will never recover.

The flashbacks and present time moments mesh extremely well together as everything comes to a head during both phases. There’s a dichotomy that is established in the presentation of the time periods in Broken Juliet, and it’s there for readers to understand who the Ethan of the past was and who this new current Ethan is…it also establishes both Cassies and how Ethan’s actions changed her in so many heartbreaking ways.

In Broken Juliet, Cassie is the damaged one – she’s bitter, angry, and completely unhinged, too stuck in the past to acknowledge that Ethan has changed…that everything she ever wanted from him before is hers for the taking. Her brokenness makes her resistant to give into her feelings for Ethan even though they are burning through her and forcing their way out. But Cassie has her own work to do before she’ll be ready and capable of pursuing anything with Ethan because if she can’t work through the pain and torment she feels every time she looks at him and every time their painful past bubbles to the surface, she’ll never be able to move on…she’ll never see the present and possible future Ethan; she’ll only see the one who broke her in the first place.

Broody Ethan from Bad Romeo was both extremely frustrating and delectably sexy, but the new and improved Ethan – the man who fought through his doubt and darkness to change for the woman he loves…there’s no words to describe how combustible he makes Cassie and readers alike feel with every word he speaks both aloud and through his texts and emails. He proves himself in Broken Juliet – he’s done the work, and I’ll admit, he definitely deserves to reap the benefits of his actions, but it’s not that easy because Ethan’s past actions are all that Cassie sees; she’s had “more practice hating than loving him” and repairing her heart, mending what he’s broken is going to take a tenacious work ethic. But I definitely think Ethan’s up for the task.

The feels in Broken Juliet are overwhelming at times because readers see how right and yet how wrong Ethan and Cassie are for one another back during their school days. There’s so much passion that exists between them…it resonates off of the pages, which makes it difficult to accept that they’re not meant to be together and offers hope that they will find their way back to each other.

Leisa Rayven’s Star Crossed series is a heartbreakingly enchanting masterpiece. It speaks to the complications of an all-consuming love – one that can destroy as much as it can fulfill. Rayven effortlessly portrays the angst and overwhelming feelings that occur due to the baggage and complexities individuals carry. Both Ethan and Cassie evolve as their story is told, but with their evolvement comes a variety of issues that must be confronted, and through Rayven’s meticulous storytelling, readers are able to understand the hows and whys behind Ethan’s misdeeds and Cassie’s brokenness.

Bad Romeo and Broken Juliet are definite must reads, and I can’t wait for Elissa’s story!
