Quint Lawson and Annie Weber heard that childhood song over and over and it never bothered them. Even though Quint was only five, Annie wasn’t just his neighbor. She would become his best friend and the love of his life. Annie wasn’t interested in dolls, or girly things when growing up. A tomboy at heart, having a boy as a best friend suited her just fine. That same boy captured her heart.
Quint had two passions, his girl and baseball. From kindergarten to college, Quint tore up every baseball diamond he played on. His position was shortstop. His talent was undeniable. Professional ball was most definitely in his future, and he was ready for it. Annie would be right by his side.
When everything in life is perfect, it’s hard to imagine heartbreak in any form. Quint wasn’t immune to its power. This shortstop had no idea what any form of heartbreak could do to his perfect world. When it hit, there were many casualties left in its wake…the most important one was Annie.
Can a person be prepared for, understand, or even endure a misfortune if they’ve never experienced one before? In Quint Lawson’s case the answer is no.

Quint Lawson and Annie Weber are the perfect couple. They’ve known each other pretty much their entire lives, going from best friends to lovers. Baseball and Annie are what make Quint’s life complete, and Annie’s there with him every step of the way, supporting his dream while working on her own. There’s nothing Quint and Annie can’t get through as long as they’re together, but when an uncontrollable situation occurs, their bond is put to the test, causing emotional turmoil and threatening to unravel every aspect of who they are as a couple and what they believe in as individuals.
Even though I could see heartbreak and suffering heading Quint and Annie’s way because everything seemed too perfect for them, it tore me apart to witness their individual suffering. Because A.M. Madden writes the story through both of their perspectives, it’s easy to see and understand both sides – the reasons Quint and Annie are acting they way they do, and the consequences behind every action. Madden doesn’t sugar coat anything as Quint and Annie struggle to find a common ground and work through their issues; the anguish, bitterness, and anger felt by Quint and Annie resonates off of the pages.
I want to blame Quint for everything that happens in the book, but I can’t because his thoughts and feelings are so realistically portrayed that while I’m angry with his actions and his harsh treatment of others, it’s hard to say how I or anyone else in his position would act. There’s nothing easy about what Quint and Annie have to deal with and despite how much they love each other, mistakes are bound to made when emotions are so high.
I really enjoyed reading The Shortstop – baseball talk and swoony romance are definitely topics I love to read about, which is exactly what A.M. Madden gives readers. Baseball is almost its own character in this book because it’s Quint’s life, and in order to understand why Quint acts the way he does when everything falls apart, readers need to be aware of how significant a role it plays.
Quint and Annie’s story will definitely put readers through the emotional ringer, but it will be worth it to see what all of the struggling and heartache allows Quint and Annie to understand about themselves and their relationship.
