Mason Cline is a haunted man who has lived his life in darkness for far too long, attempting to cover up the sins of the past by constructing walls and hiding behind a mask. He struggled in book one to feel like he deserved someone like Emma; his previous relationships, if one could call them that, were about control and release, nothing more, but with Emma and the way she opens herself up to him regardless of his hot/cold demeanor, he wants to try for her, but until he breaks free from a past that weighs him down like an albatross, there is no way he can move forward with Emma and no way to control his need for self harm as a coping mechanism.
J.M. LaRocca does one hell of a job at exploring the demons that haunt Professor Cline and the reasons he has the predilections that he does. I love that Mason’s voice dominates his story because through his perspective, it’s easy to understand why he’s so messed up and struggling with his past actions and current situation. The internal struggle that controls Mason’s attitude and actions is captured through his internal dialogue, ensuring that his soul is laid bare for readers to examine and truly wonder if it’s even possible for Mason to move past everything he was forced to do.
Emma is an interesting heroine; she saw through Mason’s mask almost instantly, but she didn’t really understand the depth of his anguish until he lays it at her feet. She’s a strong woman who refuses to be treated like a toy, but she’ll willingly be used by Mason if he’s upfront about what he needs and why he needs it. I love that Emma didn’t chase Mason. When things went bad, and they did several times, she took the space she needed and protected herself until she felt like she could handle Mason’s darkness again and try to help bring him towards the light.
Mason’s past is thrust into the spotlight in book 2 and readers get the answers they desperately wanted in book 1, and there’s a lot to wade through, but the one thing I wish we would have gotten is a more explicit explanation of what goes down to secure Mason’s future is not controlled by others. What Mason had to endure and the way he was used boggles the mind and I just wanted to see those responsible get theirs in a more confrontational way.
Even though Mason and Emma’s story ended a bit abruptly, I still really enjoyed it, and I especially loved the fact that readers get to witness Mason’s slow transformation throughout the course of the story due to Emma’s support and his need for her. What he fought through to give them both what they wanted was magnificently written.

Reaching under the covers, I ran a hand down the length of my cock and grabbed my balls, groaning at their tightness. I’d been lying in bed for the past half hour thinking about Emma.
The dream I’d woken from was so vivid in my mind. Her on her knees with my dick in her mouth, it was something I’d dreamed about many times, but this time was different.
