Tour: Sugar Baby Beautiful by J.J. McAvoy

Amazon • B&N

When twenty-four-year-old Felicity Harper is dragged to a sugar party, an event where wealthy men and women seek “companionship,” she never expects this one simple decision to drastically change her whole life. Her past is nothing but broken dreams and heartache. Her present is detached and dull. And her future? Well, before meeting Theodore Darcy, the famed film director, writer, producer and CEO of Darcy Entertainment, she would have expected more of the same. Love is just a fantasy and she wants no part of it—even if she can’t deny the undeniable attraction between the two of them. So their arrangement is simple: sex with no strings attracted. But as their intimacy becomes more powerful, so do Felicity’s demons. Can Theo really shoulder her past and his own? And could Felicity even let him?

Review

Felicity’s story is definitely not what I expected from the synopsis and title, but the way J.J. McAvoy delivers it and the information that is revealed – facts that I never saw coming – makes Sugar Baby Beautiful a fantastic read about so much more than having someone provide a lifestyle simply by looking good in his/her presence.

Felicity Harper is quite the enigma…from the very beginning, readers can tell that there’s more to her that what she allows people, even readers, to see. She’s hellbent on concealing her past by not allowing anyone to know too much about her. This is how Felicity copes with the life she’s been dealt…from a mistake that forces her to punish herself by losing things that she loved. Even though Felicity’s not content with how she’s living, she can’t risk more…she can’t handle giving herself to someone because she’s scared at what might happen if she does.

But Felicity never counted on meeting Theodore Darcy – an alpha male who’s used to getting what he wants, and he most definitely wants Felicity in his bed…in his life…any way he can have her. There’s a lot to know and understand about Theo, and J.J. McAvoy slowly unravels the mystery behind the possessive billionaire and what he’s willing to risk to keep the woman whose made him come to life. But Theo’s not the only one with layers to his personality; in fact, Felicity seems much more elusive, and as clues to her past filter into her present, it’s still extremely difficult to construct a big picture understanding because there’s parts to her that still remain unknown.

Sugar Baby Beautiful is my first read by J.J. McAvoy, so I didn’t quite know what to expect from her writing style or characters, but I have to say that I love the fact that nothing is transparent in her storytelling. McAvoy takes the story in one direction, but then turns it on its side in order to progress the way that she wants, and she does that with her characters as well. All of the characters seem to hold their cards tightly to their chest, never giving everything at once, always making people work to see who they are and what they’re all about, and to me, those are the best types of characters because readers get to experience the characters’ evolvement, and as revelations are brought out, because we’ve been watching everything seamlessly unfold in the way that McAvoy wants it to, the ah ha moment astonishes us – at least at first – but then when we take a moment to rewind the events of the story, we see small clues sprinkled about just waiting to be acknowledged, but they can’t be until McAvoy allows readers to see a clear picture, which she does by building the story the way that she wants to and making it intriguing as it’s constructed.
