RELEASE REVIEW: SUSTAINED by EMMA CHASE

sustained

Release Date: August 25th

Summary

A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.

When you’re a defense attorney in Washington DC, you see first-hand how hard life can be and that sometimes the only way to survive is to become harder. I have a reputation for being cold, callous, intimidating – and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.Complications don’t work for me – I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will get you off. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming – and I don’t pretend to be.Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I’m going to Mommy & Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room and am knee deep in a damn compost pit.Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be hard, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids.

And that – that I know how to do.

Review

For a man who doesn’t do complicated and avoids distractions like they’re the plague, Jake sure knows how to muddy the waters when it comes to a certain woman and her 6 orphaned nieces and nephews. Sure, he fought his attraction to her as best he could because he knew getting involved with Chelsea and the kids would be a major disturbance to his neat and easy lifestyle, but there’s definitely more to Jake than his defense attorney persona, and that’s the man that Chelsea and the kids allow Jake to be, which is exactly why Jake Becker just might be my favorite Emma Chase alpha male!

Readers all know that Emma Chase creates amazing male characters who may be a bit tarnished and rough of the edges but they’re also men who refuse to settle…who do what it takes to get the victory each and every time, and the ultimate win for them is finding a woman who fits them and their lifestyle and isn’t afraid to fight back for what they want. Jake Becker epitomizes that description even if he doesn’t really realize it until later on in the story.

Because Sustained is told solely through Jake’s perspective, readers are privy to all insider information. We understand his perceptive and intelligent mind and how it works…we clearly see how much he cares and sympathizes with others and what he’s willing to do to fix things when no one else seems to want to step up. Jake may be a criminal defense attorney who “outsmarts” and “out maneuvers” his opponents with ease, but there’s so much more to him, and with his interaction with Chelsea and her clan of kids as well as his internal musings about them and the situation he finds himself in, we truly get to know the real Jake not just the tenacious lawyer hellbent on a win.

Chelsea and her nieces and nephews definitely stole my heart. I’m a sucker for books with kids in them, and Emma Chase does a fantastic job of illustrating Jake and Chelsea’s interactions with them. There are multiple kid moments in the story where I was swooning over how Jake handled them and other times, my heart broke for the pain those kids felts in losing their parents and trying to cope. The kids added a whole other layer of greatness to the book and made readers feel like a part of their family.

I absolutely loved Jake’s story; it was amazing to witness Jake’s transformation, and while there were setbacks, and I wanted to punch him a time or two, he steps up in really big ways and learns to love the idea of commitment and more.

Emma Chase once again proves why she reigns as a writer of the male pov, but even more than that, her character and relationship building in Sustained is phenomenal, and it’s part of the reason why I’ll always read her stories!
