Lisa Renee Jones definitely knows how to keep her readers coming back for more with the way she crafts her romantic suspense story lines and douses them with secrets, half-truths, and danger. And, in Denial, Jones adds even more twists ramping up the anticipation and taking readers on one hell of an adventure.
The pace of the action as well as the mystery of who the heroine really is and who she can trust add to the intrigue of Denial and allow readers to be a part of the plot, unraveling clues and fearing what’s to become of the characters as they work to keep themselves alive as well as gain the information they need to know how to move forward.
Ella may have no recollection of who she is or why she’s in the situation that she is, but she’s not completely beholden to those who help her, partly due to the fact that she doesn’t know if they are truly friend or foe but also because she intuitively knows how to take care of herself and challenges herself to remember and be cautious to everything around her.
Kayden is still a bit of a mystery. It’s clear that he wants to protect Ella, but it’s unclear if he has the ability to do so because his world is equally unsafe, and there are enemies coming at them from all sides, and Kayden still hasn’t disclosed everything he knows, which may come back to haunt him if anything happens to Ella or she learns the truth from someone else.
Italy is the perfect backdrop for Denial because it’s an alluring country and the fact that there is a language barrier for Ella because she can’t remember if she knows Italian or not, she’s definitely at a disadvantage when those around her talk in Italian to conceal information.
Like all of Lisa Renee Jones’ series, Denial is only part of the whole story; it provides small glimpses into a much bigger picture that readers will have to wait to complete as the story unfolds throughout the trilogy. But even though readers will be anxiously waiting for the next book, they’re used to having more questions than answers and they know there’s a reason for how the story line is structured and that when the truth is fully revealed, it will all make sense and be completely worth the torture.

I couldn’t sleep. I meant to go to the kitchen and then I ended up here because I wanted . . .” His reaction cuts like his anger. “Just never mind.” I try to move around him but his hands press to the wall beside me, caging me, and now I’m angry. “Are we doing this again? Don’t bully me. My stupid flashbacks are doing a fine job of that on their own. I said I’m sorry. Just let me go back to my room.”
“You wanted what?”
“I wanted you to do what you swore you could,” I blurt, having nothing to lose when everything is already gone.
“Only I don’t want you to fuck me until I can’t remember my name. I want you to fuck me until I stop thinking about that man and the gun. Because you were right. Memories are the enemies that never die. But I know you don’t want—”
His hand slides under my hair and he drags me to him, my hand flattening on the hard wall of his chest. “I do want. So fucking bad it’s killing me.”
My palm is directly over his heart, and I can feel it racing, the air around us crackling with barely contained passion. “I don’t need a hero to save my virtue tonight. I need you. So please. Fuck me and then fuck with my head so no one else can. Let me choose my own sins.”
He is stone, unmoving, his body steel, his expression unreadable, the sexual tension crackling between us. “You want sin, sweetheart,” he says. “I’ll give you sin.” His mouth closes down on mine, his tongue licking into my mouth, wicked with demand, and I can taste his hunger, his need. A deep, aching need I want to fill.
