Review

I love the fact that Kendall Ryan doesn’t stick with typical story lines…that she’s willing to take risks and go beyond the normal boy meets girl set-up, and while, I’ll admit, I have a hard time with love triangles…Nolan’s relationship with the two women in his life is very unconventional…true feelings aren’t necessarily a factor in both; there’s more of a kinship with one and an undeniable connection with the other that has the potential to go further if Nolan was willing to take a risk instead of staying in his comfortable, love free bubble.

Nolan Maxwell is a former Navy SEAL whose life was controlled and on the line for his entire career. Now, he lives his life for himself – taking what he wants when he wants it and not wanting anything serious because he’s too damaged for more. He doesn’t want to be anyone’s hero; he just wants to have fun and forget about his past, living solely in the present any way he wants to without allowing emotions into it. His decisions are led by his dick instead of his brain, but the instant he meets Lacey, her innocence and light calls to him in a way that he never thought he would want and now he’s torn by the easy life he’s been living and the risky one that involves feelings and more than just release.

Lacey clearly has an agenda when it comes to Nolan and her reasons for befriending him. But her back story remains vague for much of the story, forcing readers to form their own opinions about what Lacey’s running from and how Nolan factors into her plans. As upfront as Nolan is with Lacey about his situation, the only information she tells him about her past is that she’s running from something, but since the beginning, every move that Lacey has made to get close to Nolan has been calculated and deliberate in order to protect herself from what she fled from, but the one act that wasn’t thought out was developing feelings for the man she’s been lying to from the start, which has its own set of repercussions because the truth always has a way of coming out.

Bait & Switch is an interesting title for Nolan and Lacey’s story because both of them seem to feel baited by the other to redefine what they want and need from one another. When things get complicated between them and a switch needs to occur, it’s unclear how to accomplish that because Nolan feels in his gut that Lacey’s hiding something, and he’s still unsure about changing the dynamics of his life, and Lacey knows that once the truth is revealed, Nolan’s feelings for her will definitely switch off and force her to make a new life once again without the person she wants by her side.
