Blurb
They call me a slut. Maybe I am.
Sometimes I do things I despise.
Sometimes men take without asking.
But I have a musical gift, only a year left of high school, and a plan.
With one obstacle.
Emeric Marceaux doesn’t just take.
He seizes my will power and bangs it like a dark note.
When he commands me to play, I want to give him everything.
I kneel for his punishments, tremble for his touch, and risk it all for our stolen moments.
He’s my obsession, my master, my music.
And my teacher.

Review
“It’s universally known that the more forbidden something is, the more desirable it becomes.”
For Emeric Marceaux, his illicit infatuation comes in the form of 17 year old, Ivory Westbrook, a girl wise beyond her years and someone who knows exactly what the evils and darkness of life have to offer. As Ivory’s teacher, ten years her senior and a past already entrenched in scandal, Emeric should not feel anything towards Ivory except respect for her piano playing, but his need to have her surrender not only her body but her mind and soul to him is too much to deny, and even though the risks are great, he’s willing to pay the price if it means Ivory will be his – his to control….to punish…to trust…to protect…to free.
So you brought out the best of me
A part of me I’ve never seen
You took my soul and wiped it clean
Our love was made for movie screens
These are the perfect words to describe how Emeric soothes Ivory’s tortured soul and shows her how submitting is not about giving up control…it’s more about surrendering to what she needs to feel empowered…to no longer feel ashamed or weak…to regain a balance in her life that she hasn’t had for the last four years. Emeric and Ivory’s relationship is forbidden; it’s dangerous on a number of levels for both of them, but it’s also a connection that allows them to escape darkened and tarnished pasts, especially Ivory.
All Ivory knows about sex is that men take from her and give her nothing in return, and most of the time, those men demand without consent and force her to do painful and unbearably horrible acts that make her feel like nothing but a vessel for release…not a person with feelings…not a woman with dreams and a need for love and affection…until Emeric.
Emeric makes Ivory feel alive…desired…beautiful. From their first interaction, Emeric saw the woman beneath the bruised face, shattered heart, and fragile mind. He sees the woman she’s meant to be and his feelings for her, which were never innocent, lead him to be her sole protector…her sole provider…her everything.
A relationship between Emeric and Ivory shouldn’t work – it’s illegal and taboo. It could destroy Emeric’s career – one that is already on tenterhooks, and it could also ruin any chance for Ivory to get out of Treme and become the musician that her father gave everything up for her to be.
But what Emeric and Ivory have is everything to both of them – they’re the notes that allow each other’s hearts to soar…they’re the hands that play one another’s bodies exactly how they need…they’re the music that fills their souls and allows them to feel adored and needed, and even though Emeric may be the darkest notes Ivory’s played, she understands that the way he plays the keys is the only way Ivory wants to learn.
Pam Godwin is truly a gifted writer; she crafts dark, complex, and troublesome issues and experiences in a way that vividly displays the light underneath the shadows. Readers can’t help but be drawn into the dangerous and unorthodox settings she portrays because they’re so thoroughly described, and even if the scenes leave our hearts shattered and our stomachs in torment, we have a clear picture of all that occurred and the reasons for the actions.
Dark Notes is an exquisite story full of passion, surrender, and submission. It’s about learning who you are meant to be and feeling protected enough to be that person without fear. It’s about understanding how sex is supposed to be, and even if it’s still outside the norm, it’s exactly the way it’s supposed to be.
A teacher/student relationship may be inappropriate in a number of ways, but Emeric and Ivory’s bond is essential for their happiness in all facets of their lives, which makes the boundaries that try to confine them inconsequential and makes it easy for readers to look beyond their difference in age and the nature of their school connection and simply feel consumed by how much they give one another.
