REVIEW: Beyond Ecstasy by Kit Rocha

The O’Kanes have a reputation for working hard and playing harder—except for Hawk. He joined the gang with one goal: to ensure his family’s survival through the impending war with Eden. It’s been years since he had the luxury of wanting anything for himself. Now, he wants Jeni. From the first moment he saw her, he’s been obsessed with making her his. Not for a night—forever.

Jeni’s been lusting after the former smuggler for months, but he keeps shutting her down. She’s almost given up on getting him in her bed when he offers her the last thing she ever expected—a collar. Accepting it means belonging to him, body and soul. It’s a reckless gamble, but Jeni can’t resist the chance to slip under Hawk’s armor.

The only thing more shocking than the dark, dangerous pleasure they discover is how right it feels. But falling in love is even more reckless when forever is far from guaranteed. Because they aren’t just at war, they’re out of time—and every breath could be their last.

Review

It’s do or die time, and every sector knows what’s coming; they’re all preparing for war against Eden, and as Sector 4 takes the lead, the O’Kanes are doing everything in their power to steal intel, form plans, and combat every effort that Eden makes to bring them down.

Eden’s locked up tight, and the sectors have been bathed in darkness for about a month in order for Eden to mess with the sectors’ minds and prove who holds the power in this equation. But Eden should never underestimate Dallas and Lex’s influence because the O’Kane leaders are willing to risk everything to revolt against Eden’s control and thwart any efforts that provide Eden with more power than it already has.

Like all of the books in Kit Rocha’s Beyond series, Beyond Ecstasy has layers of plot line occurring simultaneously in order to move the fight between Eden and the sectors forward and also to explore blossoming relationships amongst the new/old Sector 4 inhabitants. In book 8, Hawk and Jeni’s desire for one another is brought to the forefront, but the behind the scenes preparations for war are still strewn throughout Hawk and Jeni’s sensual moments, and as D-Day becomes inevitable, their relationship is fast forwarded more than they seem to be able to handle, causing their emotions to heighten and a desperation to set in that neither of them truly wanted to feel because of the risks that come along with it.

Hawk and Jeni have a lot to learn about each other because even though Jeni accepted his collar, the war made Hawk desperate to claim Jeni without really knowing how to please her…how to give her pain that’s pleasurable…how to walk the line without going over it. Hawk has always been controlled; it’s something he prides himself on and his focused, deliberate steps allow him to understand every action he makes and the reasons behind them. But Hawk has already wasted so much time not giving into what he truly wants and perhaps what he truly needs, so when he finally decides to pursue Jeni, there’s no guarantee that they’ll make it through the battle with Eden, causing both of them to force bonds that weren’t quite ready to be made – at least not in terms of their significance to the O’Kanes.

As Hawk and Jeni indulge in their darkest desires, Eden makes its move, and when the last fire burns out and the last bullet is shot, it will still be too soon to tell who will be standing and who will have fallen into Eden’s trap.

Desperate times lead to desperate measures and when all possibilities seem lost, the possibility of a future seem hopeless, but if there’s one thing I’ve learned about the O’Kanes, it’s that they will always fight even when it seems impossible because they’re a family who has each other’s backs no matter the cost.
