It’s incredibly difficult to see the truth amidst a crown of lies, and unfortunately, both Elle and Penn have to learn this lesson in a way that could not only destroy any chance of them having a future together but also put their very lives in jeopardy due to their lack of trust in one another and life not providing them a chance to make things right between them.
It’s easy for people to see what they want to see and not acknowledge the truth out of fear, selfishness, or guilt; Elle and Penn made assumptions about each other without a shred of hard evidence and those doubts forced them to fail one another, further burying any facts that could have been garnered with a simple conversation…without jumping to conclusions and forcing them to make decisions that led them in the opposite direction of one another.
And, even when their past connection was discovered and amends were attempted, outside forces still threatened them…still put them in precarious positions where they failed to see what had always been right in front of them, making it difficult to fix what both of them fractured by their lack of faith and honesty.
But if there’s anything readers have learned from Pepper Winters’ heroes and heroines, it’s that they’re fighters, and even though hatred drove both Penn and Elle at different points in their relationship, the reality of what they mean to one another and what they’re willing to do for each other becomes paramount as Throne of Truth continues, showcasing their tenacity as they both fight for a chance at something real.
I have to admit that I didn’t see Penn and Elle’s story heading in the direction it takes about halfway through Throne of Truth, and that’s not a bad thing because I very much enjoyed where Winters’ characters drove the storyline. Understanding Penn’s past and how he found himself in the difficult positions he did was essential for truly acquiring a full view of the boy he was and the man he became. I actually see Throne of Truth as more of Penn’s story than Elle’s…of course, they both play a pivotal role in how everything plays out, but Penn’s backstory and those involved with it are part of the reason things turn out the way they do, which is necessary to acknowledge in order for the plot to come full circle.
Pepper Winters does a fantastic job of layering the story, transitioning between the past and the present in a way that illustrates the whys and the hows of the position Penn finds himself in and the connection he has to the events that played out three years ago.
Neither Penn nor Elle truly saw each other for who they were, even when deep down, it was obvious due to the chemistry between them, and it almost destroyed any chance to make amends and acknowledge the truth because in the grand scheme of things, Penn and Elle’s choices as well as their disbelief lead them down a path they never would have traveled if they would have seen the truth for what it was at the very beginning. But perhaps, that wasn’t possible…perhaps the hellacious situations had to occur for them to truly see the truth beneath the lies or at least the façade of what they thought each other represented.
I remain in awe of Winters’ storytelling and her ability to send readers into darkness, holding on for dear life, hoping that at the end of the line, the light will find a way to break through and give her characters a second chance at love and at life. It’s easy to put our trust and faith in Pepper Winters and the path we and her characters must endure as long as long as the conclusion gets her hero and heroine where readers hope they would be!
