“A TOP 2018 & LIFETIME ROMANCE!” ~Karen, Bookalicious Babes Blog

Blurb

Fourteen years ago, my life changed forever.

My sister disappeared. That day I was selfish. That day I chose myself over her. And that day, I lost everything.

Including Nikki Walters.

She’s the girl I’ve loved my whole life. She’s gorgeous. Caring. Every single thing I’ve ever wanted but denied myself. She was my sister’s best friend, and I destroyed any chance of keeping her.

When her safety is threatened, I have a second chance to do the right thing. But as soon as she moves in, I want her in all the wrong ways.

All it takes is a brush of her hand, and I’m losing all control.

The fire between us is only burning hotter.

But neither of us saw what was coming.

And it just might be Nikki Walters who destroys me in the end.

The highly anticipated sexy, suspenseful stand-alone second-chance romance from NYT Bestselling Author, A.L. Jackson.

Review

This is the story I’ve been desperate for…the one that readers have been teased with since the beginning of A.L. Jackson’s Fight For Me series…the two character perspectives that can shed the most light on what happened fourteen years ago – the day that redefined Ollie, Nikki, Kale, and Rex’s lives and friendships, and led two people who seemed to be desperate to become more than just friends as far apart as they could possibly be while still being present in one another’s lives.

Oliver ‘Ollie’ Preston has been a shell of himself since the day he lost his sister and the life and girl he had always wanted. Fast forward 14 years and Ollie continues to battle his demons…continues to deal with an unrelenting conscience that tells him he is unworthy of happiness…unworthy of allowing the light to pierce the darkness that surrounds him…unworthy of forgiveness and absolutely unworthy of Nikki’s unselfish love.

Nikki Walters appears to be all sunshine and happiness – a woman whose selfless acts say so much more about her than the mask of happiness that she wears each and every day. But beneath Nikki’s cheery facade is a woman who is slowly dying inside…whose heart is breaking the longer Ollie shuts her out and refuses to build on the attraction that has always been between them.

Ollie and Nikki’s story is the most difficult one in the series to read, partly because the past has to be dealt with before a present can be established and a future can even become a possibility, and because Jackson reveals the painful truths of that day fourteen years ago, the heartbreaking flashbacks as well as the haunted and barely living present.

Ollie and Nikki’s decades of history does give them a fighting chance, but unless their issues are dealt with by frank discussions and honest revelations, they’ll never be able to lead each other home.

Every time I read an A.L. Jackson story, her lyrical prose and multifaceted characters immerse me into the storyline and allow me to experience every aspect of the characters’ lives as well as the menagerie of emotions felt, and because Jackson allows Ollie and Nikki to both tell the story through their separate point of views, readers are able to, in a way, be more objective than the characters themselves, understanding why they feel the way they do but also knowing that some of the self-doubt and self-recrimination is unwarranted despite the inclination to think otherwise.

I’m so sad to see Jackson’s Fight For Me series to be over, but she definitely allows readers to gain closure, offering true insight into who the three male leads are and what life experiences forced them to become the men we meet at the beginning of the series. And, while two of the three heroines are new to a group bound together by friendship and a shared history, without the other two women, I’m not sure if these tight knit gang would every be able to move forward regardless of their inner desire to do so.

REVIEW: KNOTTED by Pam Godwin

I try to forget her.
It’s impossible.

Growing up together, Conor and I shared all our firsts.
First love, first kiss, first…
Not all our firsts.

We were sixteen the night she was violently assaulted while I helplessly watched.
I’ll never forget the sounds of her suffering.
Or my inconsolable agony when she left Oklahoma.

Years later, she returns to honor our teenage pact.
Except the boy she loved is gone, replaced by a ruthless cattle rancher knotted with secrets.
She doesn’t know my dark cravings or the trails of sin that lead to her.

I don’t deserve her, but one truth remains.
She’s mine.

Review

I have to admit that even though I’ve read many of Pam Godwin’s dark romance stories, I wasn’t prepared for Conor Cassidy and Jake Holsten’s brutal tale. I wasn’t ready to endure Conor’s hellish reality at the ravine when she was 16 years old or the emotional torture and heart wrenching hits that just kept coming.

I’ll be honest…the knots in my stomach never loosened…they remained knotted together until Conor and Jake dealt with their past, allowing them time to grieve and time to process everything that occurred, working faithfully and endlessly for a future that should have been theirs since the beginning.

“Not everything’s meant to be, but Jake and I are inevitable. We’re knotted together, and damn if he doesn’t know how to tie a knot that withstands the test of time.”

Even when Conor was just a young girl, she believed in the ‘inseparable bond’ and ‘extraordinary closeness’ that she shared with her brother, Lorne, and the Holsten twins, Jake and Jarret, and while Conor’s feelings for Jake went behind familial, the four of them grew up together, supporting each other no matter what and protecting one another no matter the cost.

But when the cost came due, the men in Conor’s life made decisions without her consent, alienating and rejecting her, which made the knot that tied them together…the one that she thought would see them through no matter the miles…months…cities…years…became frayed and loosened by acts of betrayal and lies, costing all of them more than they ever imagined possible and irreparably breaking the binds that had always kept them linked.

I can’t put into words just how emotionally overwhelmed I felt while reading this story. It may have only been told through the perspectives of Conor and Jake, but Pam Godwin’s writing forces readers to confront exactly how each one of the foursome felt throughout this devastating time. I grieved with Conor and raged with Jake; I felt helpless like Jarret, and I felt agony like Lorne, partly because his hands were tied and he had very little luxuries due to where he was and partly because his protective nature forced him to agree to unequivocally alter Conor’s entire life, destroying what made Conor her and fracturing her heart and her soul into fragments of what they used to be.

I’m so glad that Pam Godwin included Jake’s point of view; his personal insights and his reasonings are so essential to the plot line and they help soothe apart of readers’ hearts when they learn the reasons behind his callus actions and just how much he’s been a part of Conor’s life even when he seemed like he abandoned her along with everyone else.

Knotted is one hell of a layered and multifaceted plot, which is exactly what I’ve come to expect from Pam Godwin’s stories, but in some ways, Conor and Jake’s story went even further, graphically illustrating the heinous offenses of some of the characters as well as the emotional and mental toil that one night caused a number of people.

In the story, because of what was done to her by both strangers and those she loved the most, there’s a process that Conor has to go through in order to heal or at least in order to start healing. Due to the amount of time that has passed and the damage that has been caused on a number of levels, I really didn’t know how everything was going to play out and if Conor would be able to return home and reestablish the knots that have always tied her to Jake, to Jarret, and to Lorne.

But let me tell you what is made abundantly clear is that Jake is going to do whatever it takes to get Conor to forgive him and to give her everything that she’s been without for six long and traumatic years.

Knotted is a story that will stay with me for a long time to come. The storytelling is beyond amazing; Pam Godwin weaves a tale of devastating heartbreak and bone-chilling anguish, but what she also does is keep a small flicker of hope burning, allowing readers to remember when Jake explained at the very beginning of the story that he is everything with her and nothing without her, and somehow, he would always lead her home and claim her as the woman she’s always been – his.

RELEASE BOOST AND EXCERPT: Tulsa by S.L. Scott

 Title: Tulsa
Author: S.L. Scott
Genre: Standalone Contemporary Romance
Release Date: May 3, 2018
Blurb

From New York Times Bestselling Author, S.L. Scott, comes a hot new rock star romance that will sweep you off your feet and leave you with a smile.

The rumors are true. At least where I’m concerned.

Drummers hit it harder and do it better.

Women love me and I love them. But I like to think of myself as a sensitive soul trapped in a lady-killer’s body. Not so surprisingly, I’ve been called cocky a time or two. What can I say? We can’t all be boy scouts.

Nikki Faris has thrown off my rhythm. With her red lips, smart aleck mouth, short skirts, long legs, and blue-sky eyes, the beautiful lead singer has become a complete distraction on this tour.

She loves to give me a hard time when all I want to do is give her the pleasure of my hard—time right back.

Tulsa Crow can save his pick up lines, great eight-pack abs, and cute dimples to use on someone else. My band earned their spot on The Resistance’s tour just like The Crow Brothers. I’m not going to blow it getting sidetracked by a cocky rock star that wants to sleep his way through the states. I’ve been called a name or two, but easy isn’t one of them.

But the best intentions with him turn into a walk of shame for me. Only, I don’t feel shame. Instead, I’m doing the very thing I said I wouldn’t—falling for a playboy.

We make sinful music when we’re on the road, but what happens to our melody when the tour ends?

Nikki Faris is amazing.
Not only is she gorgeous, she’s also smart and strong. She says what she thinks, not worried about sharing her opinions or anyone judging her for them. She can defend the craziest ideas and has theories on everything from what she thinks jackfruit tastes like to why the stars always shine on the darkest nights.
Nikki Faris is mesmerizing.
Her lips.
Her eyes.
The way her head tilts back when she laughs at her own jokes. She’s adorably funny. Even the way she rolls her eyes is growing on me.
Nikki Faris is the sexiest woman I’ve ever spent time with, and I haven’t even slept with her.
Yet.
Her denim skirt rides up really fucking high when she’s sitting. I don’t know whether I should cover her or encourage her to wiggle more. Every time she moves around on that barstool, my eyes dash between her blues and those bare legs. I’m so tempted to run my hand over the smooth skin of her thigh, but I resist because I’m just starting to earn her trust.
But then she leans over, resting her hand on my leg, the tips of her fingers dipping toward my cock, waking it up, and whispers, “I think you got me drunk, Crow.”
Chuckling, I reply, “You got yourself drunk, Faris.”
Suddenly, her free hand wanders into my hair. “Your hair is soft. No gel.” She drags the bridge of her nose along my neck, causing my dick to harden. “You smell so good. So manly. What cologne do you wear?”
“Soap and sweat, sweetheart.”
“Tulsa. Tulsa. Tulsa.” Leaning back to look me in the eyes, she confesses, “It shouldn’t, but that really turns me on.”
I laugh again and stop her hand from wandering higher on my leg. “You’re a horny drunk.”
“I am,” she replies, resting her head on my shoulder. “Have you ever heard the phrase sleeping with the enemy?”
“I have.” I touch her, not able to stop myself as I tuck those wild strands of hair behind her ear.
The bartender sets the tab down in front of me. Nikki reaches for it, but I grab it first. “My treat.”
“I have a feeling I’m going to be swearing your name in the morning.”
I do a double take. “You mean because of the alcohol, right?” While waiting for her to answer a question I already know the answer to, images of her swearing my name for other reasons cross my mind.
She doesn’t answer, which is probably best.

Excerpt

“Carlos is out,” she says in a rush. I look at her face, feeling my stomach sink. She’s playing with the hem of her shirt and glances at me nervously. Finally, her gray-blue eyes bore into mine, and I know that she’s gearing up to tell me some serious shit.

With trembling hands, I put down my coffee mug. “Tell me.”

“Yeah. Well, I heard he made bail—” She stops, clearing her throat. “I also heard that he’s, um, angrier than usual.” She stands, bringing the rest of the carafe of coffee to the table and pouring more into my cup.

I lick my dry lips. “What do you mean?”

She moves to the edge of her seat, pushing sugar my way. “Well, I was on the stoop yesterday. It was my day off. I was hanging out with everyone and listening to Mr. Samson talk about a new jazz club that recently opened up in Harlem. We were all getting high with someone’s hash, shooting the shit—”

“And?” I raise my eyebrows, waiting for her to get to the point.

“Juan came over, and sat with me.” She slightly shifts her head to the side and presses her lips together. “Well, he told me that Carlos is out now. And, he’s been talking shit all over town that he and you have some unfinished business. Juan wanted to tell me because he’s scared for you. I know he’s an annoying little shit, but after he heard…” her voice trails off.

I blink once, twice, three times.

“There’s more,” she says on an exhale. “Apparently, he hooked up with some girl last night. Beat the shit out of her. Ms. Santini from Three-A was on her way to work and stopped to drop off her trash by the dumpsters. Apparently, she heard a moaning sound. When she saw the girl, her clothes were torn. She was beaten up and started bawling about Carlos…”

My head gets dizzy, but I force myself to hear every detail. “An ambulance took her away, but she was in pretty bad shape.”

I want to ask more questions, but the terror has a clamp on my throat.

“I think you need to stay close to me for a while, okay? The Snakes are getting more aggressive. They want the Blue Houses as their own territory, and it looks like they’re trying to instill some bigger fear on the streets.” She drops her gaze. I know she’s afraid. Every girl in the Blue Houses probably heard the story by now.

“Yeah. Okay. I’ll make sure Angelo knows I need to leave before it gets dark out.”

“Good idea. We need to sync our schedules so you aren’t walking alone at night. I’m gonna talk to some other people and try to get their schedules down so that everyone has a buddy or something at night. I’m sure when everyone hears about this, we won’t be the only ones who are scared.” I nod my head and stand up mechanically, rinsing my mug and walking to my room to digest the new information. After grabbing my stuff, I check my purse to make sure that my gun is still inside. I lock myself in the bathroom and load and unload the gun a few times, reacquainting myself with the weapon. If Carlos comes, I’ll be ready for him.

Getting to work, I let Angelo know the details of what’s new with Carlos. He’s angry and continues to tell me that I shouldn’t be so stubborn and I need to let the Borignones get involved. But I refuse. I still don’t want any debts to my name. I’ve made it this far, and I believe I can wait it out a little longer.

Work passes in a blur. I’m convincing a girl to sell her diamond ring while Angelo sells the two violins and a Cartier watch to an elderly couple who want to buy something for their grandchildren.

When the day is done, Angelo insists on calling a car to take me home. I sigh deeply, knowing that the driver will be one of Angelo’s associates. But considering the fact that Carlos is out of jail, I’m not going to complain. I nod my head and take his ride in the name of safety.

I get in the huge black Escalade and see a massive man sitting in the driver’s seat. Swallowing hard, I remind myself that he’s not an enemy, but on my side. He drives me right up to my building and I gingerly walk out, my shaking hand inside my purse, gripping my gun. I’m scared as hell, but it makes me feel a modicum of control. The driver enters the building with me and steps into the elevator as well.

We reach the fourth floor when I tell him he can go. “I can get into my apartment fine now.” He nods his head wordlessly and re-calls the elevator to bring him back downstairs.

I get up to my door without incident and let out the breath I was holding while I pry my fingers off my gun. “I’m okay,” I say out loud, turning my head and letting my gaze run up and down my hallway. It’s empty. I pull out my key and step forward onto my threadbare Welcome mat when I feel like I’ve kicked something. I look down, confused at what’s on the floor. It must be Janelle’s sweater that she dropped on her way out. I bend down to pick it up and freeze.

Review

Because this is only the start of Eve and Vincent’s story, much of the story line focuses on Eve’s circumstances in New York City’s Blues Houses, and her will to survive the last six months of high school and all of the dangers and hazards that come with being a bookworm and a loner in a poverty-stricken environment that is overrun with gangs, drugs, and violence.

But Eve’s journey is far from simple and what she faces at the hands of her absentee mother and disgustedly, vicious and cruel gang members is not something anyone should face, especially a bright, young woman whose life is destined for bigger and better things than what her mother and her situation seem to dictate.

Vincent is absolutely a game changer for Eve, but not necessarily in the way that she wants or feels she needs. His life definitely seems to be one of money and entitlement, but there is a lot about his background and everyday life that remains a mystery to Eve, and while clues seem to lead readers to only one conclusion, what that means for Eve and Vincent’s growing bond as well as her future outside of the walls and streets of a place that gives her nothing but hardships and threatens to undo her on a regular basis.

By the time I got to the end of Rising, I had a clear idea as to where Eve’s life was headed and how uncomplicated it would be now that she finally has her chance to excel instead of being beaten down by her surroundings and a mother whose jealousy over her daughter’s goals infuriated her instead of made her proud. But for Eve to still have the future that she wants, she must endure obstacles that she never thought would be a part of her life outside of New York City and the Blues Houses.

It astonishes me that Rising is Jessica Ruben’s debut story because it doesn’t read like one; it’s gritty and it has an authentic feel to it. The characters are realistically flawed and aptly characterized based on the setting and conflicts they endure. And, even though there is a bit too much of Eve’s internal musings, making her back and forth feelings when it comes to her future and with Vincent a bit much at times, overall, the plot line flows seamlessly and there are so many directions that Eve’s story can be taken that I can’t wait to see what Ruben has in store for her heroine and the Bull.

Review

I’m a sucker for a college romance that has a nerdy, good girl heroine and a cocky, bad boy hero, partly because the introverted, reserved female character allows the larger-than-life male lead an opportunity to truly be himself but also because as the alpha male allows his nerdy girl to blossom, she ensures that his healthy ego doesn’t get too out of control, proving to him time and time again that their connection has nothing to do with his athletic capabilities or the fact that he’s quite the smooth talker who knows just what to say to get the woman he wants.

When Maverick Monroe and Delaney Shaw first meet as freshman in college, their one interaction creates a missed opportunity that Maverick won’t be able to rectify until two years go by, but let me tell you, when it gets his chance, he doesn’t hold back, even if his path back to the one girl he’s never forgotten is a bit over the top and clearly illustrates just how cocky the ‘badass athlete’ is. I will admit that I found myself rolling my eyes with some of Maverick’s unique methods, but I have to give him props for taking a risk and making such a unique impression on Delaney – one that would keep her holding on to what they’re building together even when some of Maverick’s words and actions don’t make her feel like she’s the one he truly wants.

I have to say that while Maverick definitely lives up to his He-Man nickname, standing strong and doing what needs to be done to take care of and protect his sister, it was actually Delaney and Raven, Maverick’s sister, who I fell in love with…these two women are AMAZING…regardless of what life throws at them, they survive it, pushing passed the unhappiness and stress, proving that Delaney and Maverick’s sister Raven are incredibly strong women and they deserve every happiness they fight for because they’ve suffered enough.

I love that Delaney, this quiet and geeky girl, who I identified with so much, used dares as her way of stepping outside her neatly crafted and controlled life because if she wouldn’t have had the courage or been dared to do a number of tasks throughout the story, she and Maverick would have never gotten their second chance and that would have been tragic for them as well as Raven.

I do have to take a minute to commend Ilsa Madden-Mills on her creation of quite the witchy antagonist in Muffin…even her name speaks volumes about the kind of girl Muffin is, and while she gets hers in the end, I wanted Madden to allow Delaney to claw her face off or at least pull her hair in a way that proved just how fake this wanna be girlfriend is.

I Dare You is a great new adult romance, and while readers will for sure be frustrated with Maverick’s secrets and lies, they can’t help but understand that while his methods weren’t the best, he only ever had his sister’s happiness in mind, and when everything is said and done, Maverick takes the necessary steps to make things right for everyone involved, and to me, that’s the kind of hero who deserves a life with his sister and his Princess Leia by his side.

Prologue

Freshman year

Delaney

Welcome to Magnolia, Mississippi, where locusts are as big as your hand and iced tea comes with a double helping of sugar.

It’s also home to the best damn annual bonfire party at prestigious Waylon University, which is currently happening right now in the middle of a cotton field.

But…

I shouldn’t even be at this party.

It’s mostly for Greeks and jocks and popular people, yet here I am, a mere freshman, hanging out with my bubbly redheaded roommate, Skye.

“See?” she says as we take in the bonfire. “Isn’t this better than watching cat videos on a Saturday night? What do you want to do first?”

I sigh, feeling nervous. Ever since I moved here from North Carolina, I’ve been pushing myself to try new things. Might as well put a crazy college party on that list. “Let’s get a drink.”

She claps and excitedly replies, “Done. Alcohol at two o’clock.” We weave through the crowd, headed in that direction, and eventually we reach the bar, which is really just a long collapsible table someone set up. On top are various bottles of alcohol, and I grab the Fireball to pour shots. I’ve just tossed mine back and set down my cup when a prickling sensation washes over me, giving me goose bumps.

My gaze moves across the crowd, stopping on a tall guy with dark blond hair, broad shoulders, and a cocky smile. Aha. He’s been staring at me, and now that he’s caught, he raises his glass as a half-grin crosses his face.

I blush wildly as I adjust my black cat-eye glasses. I’m not used to such blatant male attention.

Skye—who’s followed the trajectory of my gaze—spits out part of her drink. “Oh my God, do you know who that is?”

“Obviously I should,” I say dryly.

Her mouth flops open. “You really need to get out more.”

My eyes drift back to him but keep moving as if I’m not staring. “So who is Mr. Hottie McParty Pants?”

“If you don’t know him, you don’t deserve to know. But, he’s H-O-T—like Chris Hemsworth hot. I dare you to flirt with him.” She wiggles her eyebrows at me, knowing full well that for some reason, I can’t resist a dare. Normally rather reserved, a dare gives me permission to be someone I’m not.

So does Fireball. I sling back another shot.

“I’ll bring you a donut every day for a week if you flirt with him,” she adds, watching me.

My ears perk up. “The ones with edible glitter?”

She nods, and I toss a quick glance back to him. Our eyes collide again, and a zing of connection fires between us. He has a strong, handsome face and a stance that has masculine written all over it. A smile tips up his full sensuous lips, and—

Two brunettes—twins, no less—approach him, one on either side, and wrap their arms around his waist. He smiles down at them. Oh. Well then.

I turn back to Skye and frown. “Player. Not interested.”

She waves her hands in my face. “He likes you—I saw it on his face.”

I snort. “Probably gas pains. Your dare is not accepted.”

We hear our names being called from the other side of the party and turn to take in the helmet-haired Martha approaching us, which is taking some time due to the fact that she’s wearing stilettos and a slinky halter dress. She carefully picks her way through the crowd, nudging people out of her way—sometimes rudely—as she focuses on us. Great.

“Incoming mean girl,” I mutter under my breath.

Like us, Martha Burrows is a freshman and lives on our floor. Rather full of herself, she announced within a week of meeting us that she’d no longer answer to anything but Muffin, a nickname she’d given herself.

She eyes us both, a look of superiority on her pretty face. “I didn’t know you two were invited to this little shindig. Obviously, I know all the right people, so I’m always invited.” Her gaze zeroes in on my outfit and she rears back. “What on earth are you wearing, Nerd Girl?”

“Clothes.” I stiffen at her name for me as I tug on my fitted Star Wars shirt and the pleated red miniskirt I made from a man’s shirt. My long pale blonde hair is up in curled pigtails, and I went a bit heavy-handed with the shimmery eye shadow and red lipstick. It’s not your typical look for WU—which is anything monogrammed—but I’m learning to ignore the raised eyebrows.

Skye, the peacemaker among us three, clears her throat and nods her head at the guy who’s been staring. “Delaney has an admirer, but she doesn’t know who he is.”

Martha-Muffin follows Skye’s gaze, eyeballing the mystery man over my shoulder. She gives me an exasperated look. “That’s Maverick Monroe, you idiot. He’s the biggest football star in Mississippi and the freshman recruit of the year. Word is, though, girls like you aren’t his type—not at all.” Her hand flicks a stiff honey-colored curl over her shoulder.

My teeth grind together. “Martha, if you think I care what you think about me and whether or not a quasi-famous football player is interested in me, then you are confused.”

Her lips tighten. “It’s Muffin now, and why do you have to use such big words? What does quasi even mean?” is her cutting reply.

Skye’s eyes get as big as saucers, and I assume it’s because Martha-Muffin and I are about to finally have it out. I can’t stand her, and she can’t stand me. We just…clash.

But that isn’t what has Skye in such a titter.

She points over my shoulder, and I get it.

It’s the person standing behind me, the one I can’t see. I feel a nervous sneeze coming on and—thank God—I somehow push it down.

A husky voice reaches my ears. “Quasi means seemingly or supposedly. What she means is I’m probably not a famous football player but rather one that’s been highly touted but is without merit.”

Oh, shit. The voice is rich and smooth with just enough southern drawl to make a girl swoon. He also sounds halfway intelligent.

I turn around slowly. Mr. Tall, Blond, and Football is right in front of me wearing a cocky smile.

How in the hell did he get over here so fast?

You know that moment when everything stops and the next breath you take is the first one of the rest of your life? That’s what it feels like as Maverick Monroe stares at me with his piercing blue eyes.

I glance down and take in the sculpted chest and hard biceps.

I look back up and see a chiseled jawline that’s defined and lined with a slight scruff. I see the thin pink scar that slices through his left eyebrow, and it does nothing to detract from his appeal.

He’s perfection.

He’s air.

Which I desperately need right now, because I can’t breathe.

He smirks, as if reading my mind, and I scramble to pull myself together. Someone calls his name—it’s a girl’s voice, probably one of those twins—but he doesn’t budge.

His eyes rove over my skirt, glasses, and lips. “The question is…do you even know what makes a good football player?”

“Nice hands?”

His lips twitch. “Hardly.”

“A tight end?” I smirk, feeling sassy…which is weird. I don’t know who I am right now, but it’s like my mouth has a life of its own, saying things I normally wouldn’t.

Martha-Muffin chokes on her drink at my remark and Skye watches me with glee, clearly excited that I have the attention of someone who is apparently very important at Waylon.

I put my hand on my hip. “The question is…why do I need to know?”

“You don’t. All you need to know is I’m the best.”

I suck in a little breath at his arrogance.

A guy walks past us and claps him on the shoulder. “Badass game last week, Mav. Rock on.”

“Thanks, man.” Maverick acknowledges the compliment and lifts his chin, his eyes never straying from mine.

“What position do you play?” I ask. “Quarterback?”

He smirks. “Middle linebacker—defense.”

“Sounds fancy.”

He laughs.

Skye, who’s been eavesdropping unabashedly, sighs with a dreamy expression on her face. “His stats are the best in the country.” She clears her throat. “I-I only know that because my brother is a huge fan, I swear.”

“Hi, Maverick,” Martha-Muffin says as she edges closer to him, nudging me out of the way with her sharp shoulders. “Remember me?”

He focuses on her. “No.”

She glowers. “I was in your dorm room with your roommate last week. You said hello to me.”

He shrugs. “A lot of girls come through. I can’t remember them all.”

Oh. My. God. He is arrogant, but I like how he just shut her down.

Martha-Muffin’s face reddens and she mutters something under her breath, flips around, and flounces off. Good riddance.

Out of the corner of my eye, I see Skye is drifting away too, giving me a thumbs-up.

Whatever. I am not going to flirt with this guy…am I?

He’s definitely got something about him, something that makes my body buzz. I tilt my chin up, taking in how tall he is. He has to be at least six-four.

His gaze drifts over my face. “You know there’s a legend here at Waylon about our famous bonfire party?”

“Oh?”

He smiles, a flash of white on his handsome face. “Legend says the first person you kiss at the party is the one you’ll never forget. It might be years later, and still their face is the one you dream about.”

“Sounds like hocus-pocus.”

He lifts that mesmerizing left eyebrow. “I like to believe in legends—after all, I am one.”

I smirk. “Probably a game made up by some frat-boy-slash-jock wanting to kiss all the girls.”

He pauses for a moment as if thinking, and then he steps in closer, so close that I can see the varying shades of blue around his pupils. “May I?”

My heart does somersaults.

“May you what?” I ask, my voice low, but I know what he wants. My body is already leaning toward him, wanting it too.

“This.” He kisses me, an almost imperceptible touch as he brushes his full lips against mine. The contact of our mouths is electric, sparks of fire skating along my skin.

As if from a distance, I hear someone calling his name. It’s a female, and she’s pissed.

It’s one of the twins probably.

And I’m jealous.

But, I don’t look. We pull away, and I stare at him as he stares right back. A stillness settles over the party, although I don’t think anything’s actually changed. The music is still playing. People are still talking. Beers are being passed around.

Yet…

We’re connected.

Two stars in the black velvet sky.

Two ships passing in the night.

Oh, fuck, stop the nonsense, I tell myself.

“What was that?” I ask, my voice breathless.

“That’s your first kiss of the bonfire. Now you’ll never forget me.”

And then, before I can think of a reply, he’s gone.

I watch him go back to the twins, frustration coiling inside of me as I exhale.

It would be two years before I kissed him again.

 Fund Information

The Keith Milano Memorial Fund was established to help raise awareness about the devastating and deadly disease that is mental illness. Keith’s spirit and laughter is kept alive through our efforts to increase awareness about mental illness and to raise money for education and imperative research. Keith often struggled with society’s perception of mental illness. Our hope is that by having the strength to say that Keith was “Bipolar” we can strip away the stigma and help others to be more open about their disease.

If you want to know more about Keith or why Denise does what she does, here is short video/interview that speaks to that!

The Keith Milano Memorial Fund benefits the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). At the end of the event, participating authors will pay AFSP directly.

AFSP is the only national not-for-profit organization exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research and education, and to reaching out to people with mood disorders and those affected by suicide. AFSP is a fully accredited 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization incorporated in the state of Delaware with primary offices in New York City. Federal tax ID # is 13-3393329. AFSP’s Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) number is 10545. Donations to AFSP are tax deductible.

RELEASE BLITZ AND REVIEW: MAYBE DON’T WANNA by Lani Lynn Vale

Title: Maybe Don’t Wanna
Series: The Simple Man #2
Author: Lani Lynn Vale
Genre: Romance Suspense
Release: May 4, 2018

Peter Parker Penn.

Unlike the superhero his mother named him after, Parker is no good guy.

In fact, if there’s a picture in the dictionary under anti-hero, it’s his.

Parker’s spent his life trying to get back on the right side of the tracks, but each step he takes forward, he takes two more steps back.

To save one, he hurts others. To make this good, he turns that bad.

For appearances’ sake, he plays the part. He does what people expect him to do—mostly. And at the end of each day, he goes back to his lonely apartment and wishes he was a different person. One who could fix the things he’s broken.

Then Kayla Nash forces her way into his life, and the world as he knows it is irrevocably changed.

Everything he thinks he has right is wrong. And everything he thinks is wrong is oh, so right.

One thing leads to another, and suddenly he’s growing a conscience, and trying to prove to her that he’s as bad as everybody says he is.

Yet she won’t listen.

She’s convinced that she can save him.

Little does she know, Parker isn’t worth saving, and never will be.

Peter Parker Penn has to be one of the most self-loathing heroes I’ve been introduced to in a long time. He epitomizes the idea that people are their own worst enemies and critics. Peter constantly tortures himself over his past misdeeds, even though he knows that the actions he took were wrong and it’s clear that he feels remorse over making bad decisions that affected others in negative ways.

I have to admit that it was overwhelmingly frustrating to hear Peter’s self-recriminations, but there’s no denying that his internal monologue and his outward statements truly depict the man Peter thinks he is, and because Lani Lynn Vale writes his character and illustrates how he deals with his past, readers understand that the only person who can change Peter’s mind about himself is Peter, and that won’t happen until he forgives himself and finds a way to allow some light into a place filled with darkness.

But if anyone can get through to Peter, it’s Kayla…she’s so full of light and happiness that it resonates off of her, and because she has taken it upon herself to ‘save’ Peter from himself and help him see the good inside of himself, she’s going to use every bit of humor and quirkiness she has.

I absolutely loved Kayla…not only because it’s impossible not to smile and laugh at her craziness, especially when her best friend enters the mix, but because she’s so full of life and goodness. It’s a lost cause for Peter not to give into his feelings for Kayla because she’s just that irresistible. She’s fierce in her mission to prove that there is good inside of Peter, and that quality in her allows her to fight through so pretty nasty situations.

Now, this wouldn’t be a Lani Lynn Vale book if there wasn’t a bit of chaos thrown into the mix, which means that the action and suspense that infiltrates the storyline is meant to serve as a reminder of just how precious life and love is and that people’s perseverance to keep fighting when the fight seems hopeless determines not only the outcome but the true nature of a man.

Blurb

That’s what he said when he discovered that, with five months of college left, I was cut off. Young, wickedly handsome, and politically incorrect, he was unlike any man I ever met. And his proposition to cover my tuition in exchange for a semester of “anything goes” was offensive and thrilling.

If you’re wondering if I told him off—if the night ended with me slapping that delicious smirk right off his face—that didn’t happen.

Instead, I decided to be practical.

My name is Eleanor Courtney, and I’m the first to admit my mistakes. Agreeing to crawl into bed with the devil in a designer suit might be my biggest ever. Because he said something else to me that night:

“I don’t want to sleep with you, Elle, that would be too easy. I want to possess you.”

And Senator Graham Delaney—well, he always gets exactly what he wants.

*Disclaimer: A small portion of this 85,000 word standalone was previously published as Maya St James.

Review

A pawn is…

A person used by others for their own purposes, meaning that one person uses the other one to do his bidding…to achieve a goal that wouldn’t happen otherwise

And, the keyword that seems to sum up exactly what happens to a pawn is the word USED, which is exactly what Senator Graham Delaney proposes to Eleanor Courtney – a college student whose father financially cut her off and who now is left wondering how to fund her last semester of college.

This politically incorrect, dirty talking, cocky bastard offers to cover Elle’s college tuition for her final semester as long as she agrees to be his pawn…his ‘anything goes’ companion…his tool for revenge, but it’s clear fairly early on that Elle is in fact not a very malleable puppet at least when it comes to Graham’s final move, which means he’s met his match and might end up being the player who gets checkmated once all of the other pieces fall away.

Elle is definitely my kind of heroine; she’s independent and driven, and while she finds herself in a rather precarious position, she tries to manipulate the situation in her favor, and while she’s not always successful, she definitely becomes so much more than Graham’s pawn.

His Pawn is full of sexual tension, dirty talking, drama, and one hell of real-life tangled and twisted game of chess. Graham pretty much frustrated me throughout the entire book, but regardless of how annoyed I was at this ‘devil in the designer suit,’ I couldn’t wait to hear every word that came out of his mouth, especially when the game changes and he can’t do anything to stop it.

I love that Emily Snow pits cocky player hero against a ball buster heroine because as much as Graham believes that he holds all of the power, the queen is by far the strongest piece on the chessboard, which means that if Graham wants to rule over Elle, he just might have to bend at the knee!

4.5 Poison Apples

Excerpt

“You know, you talk about sex so much it makes me question if you’re one of those all talk, lame action situations.”

“May I?” He extends his hand, gesturing for mine. Warily, I place my fingers in his and release a yelp when he pulls it under the table, pressing my palm against his zipper. He closes my fingers, one by one, around the unquestionable—and admittedly very, very impressive—bulge.

Wow.

“That’s not hard either,” he informs me in a low voice, “but if you’re doubtful of my ability to make you forget your fucking name, how to walk, how to eat—and everything else but yes, please, and more—it won’t take long for you to get me there.”

“So that’s why you invited me to dinner, huh?” I snatch my fingers back and grab a handful of my dress to ease the electricity under my skin. It doesn’t help, and I’ve got a feeling I’ll be undone for the rest of the night all thanks to what’s hidden under Graham’s zipper. “To screw me? I guess I had you all wrong.”

“If I wanted only to fuck you, Elle, it wouldn’t have mattered where I took you for dinner—or if I fed you at all.” He whips the plate cover off my food. “Hope you like steak.”

~DEE~

I’ve always been good at wearing masks. Not letting anyone see the real me. I’m content being the happy-go-lucky best friend. The strong willed boss. The independent woman who doesn’t need a man.

But the truth is I’m just as broken as the rest of you. I’m terrified that all it will take is one person to make all my carefully constructed walls crumble into fine dust. So I guard my heart with everything I have. Determined to never let anyone get close enough to hurt me again.

All is perfect until HE walks into my life. No… he doesn’t just walk. He struts his good-looking, sex-oozing self right into my space and demands that I see HIM. Making me want what I know I can’t have.

So I did the only thing I know how to do.
I run.
But he just won’t let me go.

~BECK~

The second I see her, I know she will be mine. I see past the gorgeous smiles and heart-stopping laughter. I see HER. She doesn’t want me to know her secrets or the past that haunts her, but I make it my mission to find out.

To make her mine.

She can run all she wants, but it will never be far enough to stop me from coming after her.
She’s it for me and she knows it.
She’s just too scared to admit it.

Do you take me seriously? Because I don’t. I use my jokes and easygoing personality to hide the pain I’ve felt since he took his last breath. I’m adrift without my partner in crime, my best friend…my brother. I can taste the vengeance just within my grasp.

Until she barges into my life. Promising me happiness and a peace I’ve been craving for years. She is the sun to my darkness, the happy to my despair.

But she holds secrets. Just like I do. She holds hers close, where I just pray mine don’t rock the walls we’re trying to build.

Now I’m stuck at a crossroads between my desire for revenge and my craving for her and the life we could have together—and I have no idea which road I should travel.

All I know with crystal clear certainty is that the past has the power to destroy it all.

Darkness is the only thing I see. Ever since the day my life changed. The day that everything and everyone I held close to me ceased to exist. The day I lost it all and the demons of my past consumed my every waking moment.

I tried to keep others at arm’s length. Tried not to let my darkness taint them. Ruin them. Harm them. And whether I want to admit it or not, as much as I wish I could keep them locked out, they refuse to leave. Refuse to let me suffer alone.

If I hadn’t been so focused on keeping those demons from flying free, I wouldn’t have missed how one perfect angel was able to sneak her way under my skin—refusing to let go. Making me want things I don’t deserve.

She consumes me. Her beauty knows no end. The love she promises tempts me every time she’s near. But that pure heart that makes her MY Emmy is the one thing I’m convinced I’ll destroy if I ever let her close.

I’m a broken man. A broken man with too much darkness in his soul to ever let her light shine upon me. But even that doesn’t stop me from craving her with every single breath in my body.

**This is the final book in the Corps Security series. This book is not suitable for younger readers. There is strong language, adult situations, and some violence. There is some brief abuse and themes from outside of our h/H that may be too sensitive for some.*

REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY: Lyric by Molly McAdams

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Molly McAdams delivers the first captivating, stand-alone novel in her REDEMPTION series spin-off—the REBEL series . . .
I’m not the kind of girl you forget.
I wish I was.
I wish I was normal.
That I could blend into a crowd. Have a future with the man I’ve loved my entire life…
Maxon James understands me in a way others can’t.
For as long as I can remember, he’s vowed that one day he would claim my wild, rebel heart. God knows I wanted him to try. I wanted the life he promised me in his lyrics.
But his assurances couldn’t change the past, and the infamous mafia blood in my veins guarantees my heart can’t be claimed.
Somewhere along the way, I slipped. I let myself believe we could have it all. Now a dark, menacing shadow hovers between us, mocking us for daring to hope for a normal future.
And it’s come to collect on a blood oath.
My name’s Elizabeth Borello—Libby for short. Don’t worry about forgetting it… He hasn’t.

Review

Reading Libby and Maxon’s story took me through a myriad of emotions, not only because Molly McAdams did an amazing job of creating such multidimensional characters who I couldn’t help but understand on almost every level but also because the story line captured all of the dangerous and devastating situations that Libby and Maxon must make it through in order for Maxon to make good on his promise to love Libby forever.

I confess that I probably all of Molly McAdams back releases on my Kindle just waiting to be absorbed, but I’ve been chicken to delve into them for fear of the emotional torture that I was sure to feel. But, when the sign-up for Lyric came through, the synopsis intrigued me along with the idea that a young love affair could endure Maxon’s rock star fame and Libby’s mafia ties.

So, with my interest piqued, I dove into the story when I received my ARC, and I didn’t come up for air until I felt a bit strung out from the shitstorm that these characters struggled through and the fierce devotion Maxon and Libby showed to one another even with the risks that came along with become people of interest.

Rebel is a great term to describe Libby, but it’s also a trait that threatened to put her in harm’s way on more than one occasion. Libby acts like it’s her against the world, which means that she doesn’t allow Macon to protect her like he wants to, preferring to shield him from her dark mafia ties. This is probably the one thing that drove me nuts about Libby. I get that she walks a delicate line when it comes to her family and those who see them as a threat, but the way she kept Macon at arm’s length when he returned home after the tour was so frustrating. I know she thought it was for his safety, but I wanted her to just stop and realize what she’s doing to him and for that matter to herself.

Macon captured my heart from the start; it says a lot about someone who remains devoted and honors his promise, especially with the kind of world Macon finds himself in when his band hits the big league. And, no matter what Libby does to push him away, he stands strong, even when the reality of Libby’s family is revealed and the potential harm he could suffer becomes probable instead of hypothetical.

I can’t get over how spellbinding this story is; it seriously tied me in knots, anticipating worse case scenarios. I don’t think I ever truly felt at ease until I read the last word on the last page, and still, after that, I couldn’t calm my heart or my emotions.

Lyric is definitely a story that will stick with me, not only because of how amazing it’s written but also because it illustrates just what people are capable of when they believe in themselves and in the promises they made.

When she’s not diving into the world of her characters, some of her hobbies include hiking, snowboarding, traveling, and long walks on the beach … which roughly translates to being a homebody with her hubby and dishing out movie quotes. She has a weakness for crude-humored movies and fried pickles, and loves curling up in a fluffy comforter during a thunderstorm … or under one in a bathtub if there are tornados. That way she can pretend they aren’t really happening.
