RELEASE BLITZ AND REVIEW: SHAKE IT UP by J. Kenner

SIU_SBPR_RB BANNERShake It Up, an all-new sexy standalone by #1 New York Times bestselling author J. Kenner, is LIVE!

8 - August - Shake It Up

There are a million reasons why I need to stop thinking about Taylor D’Angelo naked.

She’s too young for me, for starters.

She’s too ambitious.

She’s my job.

Romance was the last thing on my mind when I agreed to look into her stalker as a favor.

Now, she’s all I can think about–and in every position I can imagine.

I’m not the only one obsessing.

The threats against her are intensifying along with our connection.

If I give in, if I let our bodies take over, it could draw her stalker out.

Our passion could save her.

Or it could destroy us both.

Meet Mr. August – He’ll do anything to protect her.

SHAKE IT UP_TEASER 4.1

Review

Shake It Up – that’s exactly what J. Kenner does with the 8th installment of her Man of the Month series because Landon and Taylor’s story is romantic suspense unlike the previous books, but readers need not worry about anything else being ‘shook up’ because Kenner still gives her readers a quick and dirty read and definitely leaves them satisfied;)

Mr. August is a police officer turned body guard who volunteers to protect a woman who he has been attracted to since the first time they met, which means this may be the best thing for him or the worst, considering he’s supposed to ‘guard’ her body not give into the desire to own her body and soul.

Readers can guess how well Landon fights his attraction to Taylor while they’re constantly in close proximity to each other, but even though he does cross the line, it’s clear that Landon and Taylor share an intense connection that they both want to explore, so even though she’s eleven years younger than him and is being stalked by an extremely dangerous man from her past, they can’t get enough of one another

Readers familiar with the Man of the Month series will already have some knowledge of who Taylor is, but it’s not until Shake It Up that we learn about her past and the bad things that were supposed to be behind her. I definitely think that because Taylor is a familiar face that her and Landon’s story will have readers even more invested in the plot line and Taylor’s safety and the added suspense and the anticipation of the stalker striking also will keep readers’ interest and have them anxiously turning the pages to find out what happens with both Landon and Taylor’s relationship as well as the outcome of a very dangerous situation.

8 men have been selected for the calendar to help raise money for The Fix, which means we’re down 4, and I, for one, can’t wait to see who graces the other months of the year and who J. Kenner puts in these men’s path to shake up their lives as well as their hearts.

“You have to marry her.”

Rip Savage stared at the man who’d been like a father to him over the past year. Even now, with worry lines bracketing his eyes and mouth, the older man retained a sense of elegance and grace befitting someone of English descent, even royalty. With his thinning silver hair, thick black framed glasses, and penchant for designer black suits, he cut an intimidating figure, even before one stared into those pale blue eyes that could turn steel grey with stubborn defiance. Of course, Edward Winsor had a reputation to live up to. Within the cliques of vineyards and winery owners in the Hudson Valley, he was well known for his quality vintage and a tightly knit family-run business that competed with Brotherhood Winery for the oldest run winery in the state. His estate was small but mighty, and one of the sought-after blue-bloods that many admired.

Rip had been the only one to know Winsor Winery had been almost bankrupt. Beneath the flawless surface, something rotten had flourished. When Rip was hired to pull the business from ruin, he’d been focused on success no matter what the cost. He hadn’t expected to develop such affection for Edward, or be treated like a son rather than a hired associate.

Therefore, instead of panic, he regarded the older man from across his cherrywood desk with a frown. “I don’t understand. What does Caterina have to do with the winery?”

Edward gave a long sigh, tapping his elegant finger against the etched crystal highball glass that contained his usual two fingers of Scotch. He shifted his weight in his chair, causing the leather to squeak slightly. They were in Rip’s favorite room—the library/study—decorated in bold, rich wines with a hint of Tuscan gold. The fabrics were decadent, from the expensive dark leathers to the Oriental tapestry rugs, and burgundy velvet couches. Bookshelves lined the wall, the scents of old paper and leather bindings with a touch of wood polish drifting in the air. The large bay windows overlooked the acres of rolling property with the view of the spectacular Shawangunk Mountains.

Usually, the view alone soothed him. Reminded him of his success and how far he’d come in a world he’d fought to break into. But his nerves were edged with a fine tension that matched his gut. Something bad was going down, and he had a terrible idea he wouldn’t be able to stop it.

RELEASE REVIEW: BRO CODE by Kendall Ryan

From New York Times bestselling author Kendall Ryan comes a flirty new standalone about falling for your older brother’s best friend.

There’s pretty much only one rule when you’re a guy.

Don’t be a douche.

Turns out, the fastest way to break that rule is to fall for your best friend’s sister.

Ava’s brilliant, sharp-tongued, gorgeous, and five years younger than me.

She’s the sexual equivalent of running with scissors. In a word, she’s dangerous. And completely off-limits.

Falling for her could ruin everything.

Yet I can’t seem to stop, even when her company is threatened by a lawsuit, and my promotion hinges on representing the opposing client—and winning.

I can’t see a way out of this mess that doesn’t end in a broken friendship, a broken heart, or a ruined career.

I may have broken the bro code when I fell for Ava. But do I have the balls to handle what comes next?

Review

Kendall Ryan takes on the forbidden trope of best friend’s little sister in her newest release, BRO CODE, and while Barrett Wilson is all about keeping to the code, when an older, brilliant, feisty, and beautiful Ava Saunders re-enters his life, her off-limits status becomes a bit more problematic, especially when Ava’s boldness lays things out for Barrett in a way that cannot be misinterpreted…Ava wants Barrett, and she’s willing to do whatever it takes to act on the feelings she’s always had for him because the sexual tension that surrounds them is just too overwhelming to deny.

One reason I adore stories that bring a guy’s best friend and his sister together is because readers are there from the beginning, watching the guy and the girl do everything in their power to remain only friends because giving into the attraction would spell trouble for all three of their relationships, while still knowing that the line is going to be crossed and there’s really no way of stopping it from happening, which means that at the will they or won’t they question as it applies to Barrett and Ava dramatically plays out, readers get to hear the characters’ internal struggles and become aware of their true feelings for the person they are not supposed to want.

Ava is a very relatable heroine whose sharp and witty tongue makes her one of my favorite Kendall Ryan female leads. Ava is all about learning new things and is passionate about an array of topics. I love that she wants to run her father’s company and she wants to do it in a way that will make him proud but also put her own spin on it. She’s driven to succeed, not just at her job but in life as well and that’s why it’s a bit exasperating the way Barrett handles his feelings for her sometimes because it’s obvious she is one heck of an amazing package and he should be beyond excited that she wants him as much as he wants her.

The Bro Code between friends definitely makes sense, especially when it comes to a younger sister, but once they reach a certain age, I don’t see it as a douchey move to consider if something could work between two people who have always crushed on each other, and it’s that idea that frustrated me when it came to some of Barrett’s actions. I get that there’s a lot on the line for him in terms of his career, his relationship with the entire Saunders family, and his best friend status with Ava’s brother, Nick, but there’s a reason that Barrett is so close to the family and so if his feelings for Ava are genuine, there should be no stopping him from acting on them and building something that just might be the best thing for both of them.

Ava and Barrett’s story is full of hilarious moments, sexual tension, and witty exchanges, and while I did want to kick Barrett in the rear end sometimes, there’s not much drama involved in the story line; it’s more just waiting for Barrett to shut his brain off long enough to realize just how much he wants Ava, Bro Code be damned!

RELEASE DAY LAUNCH: REVIEW AND EXCERPT: TWO TO LOVE by Lexi Blake

Re-released in a second edition with new content.

Three lost souls

Growing up in the eclectic, small town of Bliss was wonderful for Callie Sheppard. She loved everything about it, except for the lack of potential romantic partners. She only went wild once in her life, sharing a perfect weekend in Dallas with two incredible men she never thought she would see again. When they parted, she was left with a hole in her heart she feared would never be filled.

One romantic weekend

DEA agents Nathan Wright and Zane Hollister were thrilled when Callie agreed to spend the weekend with them. Just days away from a long, undercover assignment, they considered this passionate affair to be an ideal way to spend their last days of freedom. They never expected to fall in love. Leaving her behind was the hardest decision of their lives.

An unexpected reunion

Six years later, Callie is preparing to break in a new sheriff after Rye Harper walked out on the job. Her heart skips a few beats when the man walking through the door is none other than Nate Wright. Nate and Zane have come to Bliss, but their time undercover has left them broken and scarred. The boys are determined to win back Callie’s heart. But when the criminals they took down come seeking revenge, Nate and Zane may have to save the strange little town of Bliss before they can reclaim the woman they love.

Review

It continues to amaze me how Lexi Blake consistently crafts sexy, humorous, and action-packed stories – ones that don’t stay in just one trope…ones that explore all kinds of kinky and plutonic relationships…ones that center around a group of tight-knit characters whose bond is solidified both because of their similarities but more so because of what they separately bring to the table.

In Two to Love, Lexi Blake, writing as Sophie Oak, takes readers back to Bliss, Colorado – an interesting name for an eccentric town. Bliss provides its citizens quite the safe haven to explore who they are and what they want, and while outsiders may view Bliss as nothing but a hick town that fact is the very reason that it appeals to people because once they get used to the way things go there, no one seems to want to leave.

I do have to say that if readers weren’t privy to the wild weekend Callie Sheppard spent with Nathan Wright and Zane Hollister six years ago that it might have been difficult to picture these three together, especially given what Nate and Zane’s long term undercover assignment in a biker gang has done to them. Neither of the men are who they were before ‘becoming’ a Barbarian; their time in the MC really did a number on them, and although Zane is the one who seems to be the most tortured given the circumstances that occurred, Nate’s the one I wanted to knock some sense into and open up his eyes to the happiness that was standing in front of him if only he just reached out for it.

I adored Callie. She is definitely a force to be reckoned with – she has so much to offer these two men and she’s more than capable of handling their darkness as long as they allow her to bring in some light and help them both to heal.

And the dynamics between the three of them works really well; they give each other what they want and need and there are never moments of jealously, which to me would be such an issue in a relationship involving three people, but Callie, Nate, and Zane seem to understand how to work together and keep communication lines open, even if it takes Nate a big longer than Zane to truly admit his feelings, not only for Callie, but for Bliss, Colorado as well.

I really enjoyed Two to Love; it has everything I’ve come to love from Lexi Blake: steam, action, angst, and heart. And what I also like about Blake’s ménage stories is that her characters don’t only connect during intercourse; their bond is further solidified outside of the kinky play they frequent, which makes the story about so much more than just their capability in bed. I love that Callie brought these two alpha males to their knees but then reciprocated and made Nate and Zane perfectly aware of how much love and comfort she has to give them as long as she gets it in return.

Excerpt

Callie Sheppard was startled by the sound of the door opening. She sat straight up in bed and wondered what the hell she was doing. It had seemed like a great idea at the time, but now a tremor of trepidation ran through her system. She was naked in a notorious BDSM club, waiting for two men to walk in and take her virginity.

It wasn’t that she minded losing her virginity. She wasn’t doing anything interesting with it in the first place. It needed to go, but now she worried this wasn’t the way to do it. She wanted some affection and kindness. Would they give that to her? Oh, god, Stef had found her two guys for her birthday. She’d made him a loaf of zucchini bread and shared a bottle of cheap wine for his. What was she doing?

Could she run? She was naked. That didn’t really bother her, but it could confound a lot of people.

“Hello.” The deepest voice she’d ever heard pulled her from her panic.

She turned and hoped there wasn’t a line of drool running out of her mouth as she caught sight of them. Best birthday present ever. Stef might be straight, but he knew how to pick gorgeous men.

She climbed as gracefully as she could off the big bed and faced them. They were perfect. The one who had spoken was tall. She doubted she would reach his shoulders when she stood against him. He was at least six and a half feet, and his body was corded with muscle. Every piece of him seemed chiseled out of granite. He was male model perfection, with a strong jaw and piercing green eyes. His hair was inky black and curled sweetly over his ears.

His partner wasn’t quite as tall but still was no small man. He was a few inches shorter than the gorgeous monster, and his body held a lean strength. If the black-haired devil was a linebacker, this man was a swimmer. His eyes were a stark blue. His skin was sun kissed and smooth. Callie was fascinated with the idea of soft skin covering steel. His hair was cut in a military style. It was a rich brown. The intimate light of the room caught the gold and red streaks. He looked like a man who laughed often.

Everything inside her heated up at the sight of them, and she wasn’t so scared anymore. Why the hell would she run from all that hotness? And they were handpicked by a man who would never, ever hurt her. She was safe with them.

“Hello.” It seemed like a dumb thing to say to two glorious men when she was naked as the day she was born, but it was all she could think of.

“Hello, Callie.” The other man’s voice was deep, too, but there was an inherent friendliness to his Texas accent. It looked like Stef had found her a couple of cowboys. The blue-eyed man watched her. He gave her a small, calm smile, like he didn’t want to scare her. “Are you nervous, sweetheart? We don’t want you to be. Nothing happens here that you don’t want. All you have to do is say the word and everything stops.”

Their eyes were on her body. Callie had never thought much about her body before. It was a natural thing. She’d grown up in a household where nudity wasn’t frowned on. She was comfortable in her skin, only now she wasn’t. Now she was starting to feel hot and restless. They weren’t avoiding her private parts the way the nudists politely did back in Bliss. These men stared boldly at her breasts, and her breasts seemed to be staring right back. Her nipples were hard nubs.

“Do I get a safe word?” The question came out on a breathy sigh. She’d always wanted to know what it felt like to truly submit. Stefan’s subs always seemed satisfied.

The blue-eyed man’s mouth turned down. “Your safe word is no. We don’t have to play games. All you have to do is say no and we stop.”

“But we can play games if you want to.” That came from the big guy. His husky voice did all sorts of things to her libido. He walked boldly up to her and placed his hands on her hips. His touch lit up her skin. “Do you want to play, darlin’?”

Oh, yeah, she wanted to play.

NY Times and USA Today bestselling author Lexi Blake lives in North Texas with her husband, three kids, and the laziest rescue dog in the world. She began writing at a young age, concentrating on plays and journalism. It wasn’t until she started writing romance and urban fantasy that she found the stories of her heart. She likes to find humor in the strangest places and believes in happy endings no matter how odd the couple, threesome, or foursome may seem.

“Carlos is out,” she says in a rush. I look at her face, feeling my stomach sink. She’s playing with the hem of her shirt and glances at me nervously. Finally, her gray-blue eyes bore into mine, and I know that she’s gearing up to tell me some serious shit.

With trembling hands, I put down my coffee mug. “Tell me.”

“Yeah. Well, I heard he made bail—” She stops, clearing her throat. “I also heard that he’s, um, angrier than usual.” She stands, bringing the rest of the carafe of coffee to the table and pouring more into my cup.

I lick my dry lips. “What do you mean?”

She moves to the edge of her seat, pushing sugar my way. “Well, I was on the stoop yesterday. It was my day off. I was hanging out with everyone and listening to Mr. Samson talk about a new jazz club that recently opened up in Harlem. We were all getting high with someone’s hash, shooting the shit—”

“And?” I raise my eyebrows, waiting for her to get to the point.

“Juan came over, and sat with me.” She slightly shifts her head to the side and presses her lips together. “Well, he told me that Carlos is out now. And, he’s been talking shit all over town that he and you have some unfinished business. Juan wanted to tell me because he’s scared for you. I know he’s an annoying little shit, but after he heard…” her voice trails off.

I blink once, twice, three times.

“There’s more,” she says on an exhale. “Apparently, he hooked up with some girl last night. Beat the shit out of her. Ms. Santini from Three-A was on her way to work and stopped to drop off her trash by the dumpsters. Apparently, she heard a moaning sound. When she saw the girl, her clothes were torn. She was beaten up and started bawling about Carlos…”

My head gets dizzy, but I force myself to hear every detail. “An ambulance took her away, but she was in pretty bad shape.”

I want to ask more questions, but the terror has a clamp on my throat.

“I think you need to stay close to me for a while, okay? The Snakes are getting more aggressive. They want the Blue Houses as their own territory, and it looks like they’re trying to instill some bigger fear on the streets.” She drops her gaze. I know she’s afraid. Every girl in the Blue Houses probably heard the story by now.

“Yeah. Okay. I’ll make sure Angelo knows I need to leave before it gets dark out.”

“Good idea. We need to sync our schedules so you aren’t walking alone at night. I’m gonna talk to some other people and try to get their schedules down so that everyone has a buddy or something at night. I’m sure when everyone hears about this, we won’t be the only ones who are scared.” I nod my head and stand up mechanically, rinsing my mug and walking to my room to digest the new information. After grabbing my stuff, I check my purse to make sure that my gun is still inside. I lock myself in the bathroom and load and unload the gun a few times, reacquainting myself with the weapon. If Carlos comes, I’ll be ready for him.

Getting to work, I let Angelo know the details of what’s new with Carlos. He’s angry and continues to tell me that I shouldn’t be so stubborn and I need to let the Borignones get involved. But I refuse. I still don’t want any debts to my name. I’ve made it this far, and I believe I can wait it out a little longer.

Work passes in a blur. I’m convincing a girl to sell her diamond ring while Angelo sells the two violins and a Cartier watch to an elderly couple who want to buy something for their grandchildren.

When the day is done, Angelo insists on calling a car to take me home. I sigh deeply, knowing that the driver will be one of Angelo’s associates. But considering the fact that Carlos is out of jail, I’m not going to complain. I nod my head and take his ride in the name of safety.

I get in the huge black Escalade and see a massive man sitting in the driver’s seat. Swallowing hard, I remind myself that he’s not an enemy, but on my side. He drives me right up to my building and I gingerly walk out, my shaking hand inside my purse, gripping my gun. I’m scared as hell, but it makes me feel a modicum of control. The driver enters the building with me and steps into the elevator as well.

We reach the fourth floor when I tell him he can go. “I can get into my apartment fine now.” He nods his head wordlessly and re-calls the elevator to bring him back downstairs.

I get up to my door without incident and let out the breath I was holding while I pry my fingers off my gun. “I’m okay,” I say out loud, turning my head and letting my gaze run up and down my hallway. It’s empty. I pull out my key and step forward onto my threadbare Welcome mat when I feel like I’ve kicked something. I look down, confused at what’s on the floor. It must be Janelle’s sweater that she dropped on her way out. I bend down to pick it up and freeze.

Review

Back in the Game is one of the sweetest and swoonworthiest novellas that I’ve had the pleasure of reading. Calder Weiss (aka Wanda the Fairy) is quite the charmer, not only because he’s one heck of a single dad despite the crazy schedule that comes with being a professional hockey player in the NHL, but also because he gives so much of himself to everyone around him, and while it leaves him a bit lonely and stuck in a rut, he has his priorities set and he works his butt off to ensure that Shea is healthy, happy, and truly understands how much he loves her. Rachel is just the ray of sunshine that Calder need, so the fact that he instantly knows she could be a ‘contender for his heart’ doesn’t surprise him, but what does make him a bit anxious is getting back into this whole dating game that he’s been out of for almost 6 years. Calder is definitely a bit rusty when it comes to ‘proper’ dating techniques and his nervousness over a phone call and what he should wear during it made me laugh out loud, but these moments also show just how genuine and conscientious he is, which will definitely have readers rooting for everything to work out for him and his daughter, Shea.

Rachel is quite the quirky, witty, and energetic woman, which is exactly what she needs to be as a kindergarten teacher, and it’s also the qualities that catch Calder’s attention right from the start. She’s used to corralling a group of 30 little kids, so her sense of humor and her easy going personality make a lot of sense and those traits are also what allow Calder to feel more at ease with Rachel than he thought possible since he’s been so far removed from a romantic relationship.

Calder and Rachel’s text exchanges are EPIC! And, it gives them both a medium to take a few more risks than they ordinarily would if they were talking to someone face-to-face. They keep one another on their toes and prove just how good they could be as a couple despite their hectic schedules because of how quickly they’ve managed to steal each other’s heart.

Even though Back in the Game is only a novella, there’s a lot of depth to it. Meghan Quinn does a great job of developing not only Calder and Rachel’s personality but also illustrating the progress of their relationship and what that means, not only for the two of them but also for a little 5 year old girl who means the world to Calder, and if he allows it, I’m sure Rachel will feel the same way.

Calder and Rachel’s story is a great read; it’s hilarious and heartwarming and it’s definitely a feel good novella that all romance lovers should read.

4.5 Poison Apples

Born in New York and raised in Southern California, Meghan has grown into a sassy, peanut butter eating, blonde haired swearing, animal hoarding lady. She is known to bust out and dance if “It’s Raining Men” starts beating through the air and heaven forbid you get a margarita in her, protect your legs because they may be humped.

Once she started commuting for an hour and twenty minutes every day to work for three years, she began to have conversations play in her head, real life, deep male voices and dainty lady coos kind of conversations. Perturbed and confused, she decided to either see a therapist about the hot and steamy voices running through her head or start writing them down. She decided to go with the cheaper option and started writing… enter her first novel, Caught Looking.

Now you can find the spicy, most definitely on the border of lunacy, kind of crazy lady residing in Colorado with the love of her life and her five, furry four legged children, hiking a trail or hiding behind shelves at grocery stores, wondering what kind of lube the nervous stranger will bring home to his wife. Oh and she loves a good boob squeeze!
