RELEASE REVIEW: MAREK by Sawyer Bennett

Marek: A Cold Fury Hockey Novel
Sawyer Bennett
Release Date: May 22, 2018

Synopsis

Marek Fabritis is used to delivering blows, not receiving them. But when he gets tipped off by an anonymous email about his ex-girlfriend, the news leaves him ice cold—and it’s not because Gracen Moore is getting married to a total jerk. It’s the fact that Marek has a three-year-old daughter he never knew about. Now he’s going back home, not to play knight in shining armor but to make damn sure that no man takes what’s his. For the first time, there might be something more important than hockey.

Gracen Moore has always loved Marek. That’s why she let him go, so he could pursue a career in the NHL. And that’s why she never told him about Lilly. Only now does Gracen realize that she made an unforgivable mistake. But is that any reason for Marek to crash her wedding and make an epic scene? If the spark that still smolders between them is to be trusted, maybe. Still, Gracen’s not getting her hopes up. Because she knows better than anyone that appearances aren’t always what they seem. . . .

My Review

Sawyer Bennett’s Cold Fury Hockey series is one of my absolute favorites, and the fact that it’s still going strong after 11 books speaks to Bennett’s ability to write great sports romance stories that entertain readers and introduce them to a bevy of hot alpha males whose athletic prowess matches their dirty talking and swoon worthy personalities.

At the end of Reed’s book, readers were offered insight into Marek Fabritis’ past and the girl he left in order to pursue a professional hockey career, but one anonymous email brings his past into his present and as Marek crashes Gracen’s wedding, he learns a secret that irrevocably changes his life, proving that his love for hockey just might come in second place, which is not something he would have ever thought possible.

I get why Gracen Moore made the decision she did after she let Marek go so that he could fight for his dream, but I definitely do not condone her keeping Marek’s daughter from him or the way she handles everything when Marek re-enters her life and learns the truth about his daughter, Lilly. I hate to say it but Gracen frustrated and annoyed me because I just couldn’t figure out why she did the things she did and why she couldn’t see things from Marek’s perspective or at least learn to communicate with him in a mature way.

I have to admit that even after reading Marek, I’m not completely sure how I feel about Marek or Gracen. Both of them were extremely immature and had unrealistic expectations when it came to their relationship with each other and their daughter. Their inability to address all of the issues between them and simply remain singularly focused on the fact that Gracen kept Marek’s daughter from him for the first three years of Lilly’s life was counterproductive and it was a huge obstacle for them to get through if they truly wanted a second chance with the true love of their life.

I loved watching Marek with Lilly. She ‘humanizes’ Marek for lack of a better word and she makes him want to be a better man even if it takes a while for that concept to sink in. I would have liked to understand Marek’s actions a bit more because I feel like who he was back when he was with Gracen and who he became without her only presented him as young and wanting freedom that he wouldn’t have if he didn’t break things off with Gracen.

Even though I had some issues with this installment of Bennett’s Cold Fury Hockey series, I’m still a huge fan of the characters and the story lines that she created, and I will be waiting impatiently more of her hockey sports romances!

She believes in the good of others, and that a bad day can be cured with a great work-out, cake, or even better, both.

Synopsis

This whole contest was supposed to be easy. I know, I know. Famous last words.

It’s a long story, but I messed up at work. Big time. To earn back the trust of my boss, I promised to save one of our magazines. Yep. That Hot Dad contest you’ve seen advertised all over the place was my idea. And if I’m successful, if I’m able to increase our online readership, then I get a shot at my dream job.

But the one thing I never expected to happen, happened: Contestant number ten, Grayson Malone. Hello, Mr. Difficult. And did I mention sexy as hell?

Unfortunately he knows me. The old me, anyway. And while we might be older now, I remind him of before. Of the woman who broke his heart, who hardened him, and who left him alone to raise the cutest little boy I’ve ever seen.

But I don’t want a relationship. And I definitely don’t fall for single dads with baggage. Even ones with chiseled abs and killer smiles.

But he got to me. They got to me. Him and his son and their messy, crazy life. But I got to him too. I see the stolen glances. I feel the walls he built start to crumble. I recognize that there’s an unexpected beauty to the chaos in his life.

And now that the contest is about to end, we’re left to decide whether the last six months were just fun or if what we have is worth risking it all?

My Review

I’m a sucker for book boyfriends who are single dads. There’s just something about an alpha male raising a child on his own that makes be swoon and warms my heart more so than any other type of romance hero.

And let me tell you, Grayson Malone is one hot daddy!! So the fact that Sidney Thorton is drawn to him regardless of her aversion to anything even remotely related to having a family doesn’t surprise me nor does the ability of an 8 year old little boy to wrap her as well as everyone else around his finger as he shares his dreams for the one thing he’s always wanted – a new mommy.

The idea that first impressions stick is quite evident in the story because it’s Grayson’s preconceived notions of who Sidney is that makes it extremely difficult for Sidney to get on Grayson’s good side.

But despite Luke’s wishes and the evident attraction between Grayson and Sidney, the fact that Sidney reminds Grayson too much of the woman who broke his and his son’s heart is a huge roadblock for them, which means that unless Sidney can prove to Grayson that she’s not the privileged and stuck up girl she used to be, he won’t see her as worthy of a risk as big as the one he would take by making her a part of his son’s life as well as his own.

I know that some readers don’t really enjoy slow burn love stories, but I actually adore them, partly because, as a reader, I ‘m with the hero and heroine as they get to know one another, decide to act on their feelings, and then create a solid relationship despite a few bumps in the road. I also find these stories more satisfying because the amount of work and effort the couple puts into creating an ‘us’ is fully illustrated, proving that it becomes more about what they mean to each other than the sexual attraction they initially felt.

The Malone brothers are one delectable group of manly men; I seriously can’t choose between Grant, Grady, and Grayson because they all ooze masculinity, have professions that matter, and care for and protect their family and friends with all that they are. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reading all three stories, but I have to say that little Luke stole the show and made Worth the Risk my favorite of the three!

But by the time I reach her, my blood boils with irrationality spurred on by too much alcohol.

“Can I have a moment?” I ask as I walk up to her and grab her elbow, pushing her down the darkened hallway.

“What is your problem?” She hisses as she fights me every step of the way.

We get looks. I get looks. I don’t care because all I keep seeing is Vince’s hands on her arm. His eyes on her tits. His bullshit game I can spot a mile away.

I find the closest door down the hallway leading to the bathrooms, and it opens. I push her through it, barely noticing that it’s an office of sorts before the door is shut, her back is up against it, and my mouth is covering hers.

Take.

Goddammit. That’s my only thought as I fit my lips to hers and take out my anger on her mouth with tongue and teeth and every fucking lick and nip in between.

“What—”

“I’m so pissed at you.”

It’s all I say. It’s the only chance I give her to come up for air before my lips are back on hers. Before my tongue wars with hers. Before my body admits it would beg, borrow, and steal in order to taste every other part of her.

Groan.

I swallow the tiny sound she makes in our kiss as my hands hold her neck still and my lips wage an all-out assault. She hesitates—just a split second—before she reacts. Before her body bows into me, and her mouth argues back.

Fist.

Her hand in my shirt. Her other hand at the back of my neck as our bodies meet—pressed knee to chest. Her perfume in my nose. Her hair tickling my cheeks. The feel of her tits against my chest.

Give.

I can’t get enough.

I’m mad at her.

I want her.

I don’t want to want her.

Christ, do I want her.

“Gray.” A murmured protest.

I tear my lips from hers, shove off the door I have her pressed against, and stride to the other side of the room.

“You are . . . you just . . .” It’s as if I can barely breathe. Christ, I’m mad at you.”

She stands there, lips parted, chest heaving, and golden brown curls messed from my hands, but her eyes look hurt. A hurt I don’t want to see but can’t deny.

“Why?”

“You did this,” I accuse as I try to manage the anger that’s waging a war against my desire.

“Did what?” Her eyes narrow. Her hand goes to press against her chest.

“Made me want you.”

Grayson: I’ve been thinking about you all day.

I look down at the text and smile before turning my attention back to Rissa and our plans for how we’re going to end this round of voting and move on to the top five.

“So, I think we close it out and then maybe take the next week and announce one of the finalists each day. Give little tidbits about each of them, make readers like them more, just have fun with it.”

My phone beeps again with another text, and I bite back the new grin trying to form on my lips. Rissa only huffs, eyeing my phone with annoyance. “Sorry, let me turn my ringer off.”

And then I have to feign nonchalance when I look down at my phone and find another text.

Grayson: My dick is rock hard, and it’s you I’m imagining. It’s in my hand when I’d rather it be in your mouth with my fingers in your pussy, working you into a frenzy.

“Is everything okay?” Rissa asks, making me realize I must have made a noise when I read the text. “You look startled.”

I glance back at the text again and shake my head while every part of my body comes to life. “Yeah, it’s, uh, fine.”

“Your ringer.” Her brows are lifted as she glances to my phone and then back to me.

My finger?” I squeak, thinking she saw the phone screen.

“Ringer. Sound on your phone.”

“Oh, yes . . . sorry.” Flustered, I fumble with my cell, and before I can even switch it off, another text alert pings.

Grayson: I want to bend you over and watch as my cock slides in and out of you.

“So back to next week . . .”

“Yes,” I swallow over the desire lodged in every place it should be and try not to glance at my phone as it vibrates again.

“Are you good with that plan?” Rissa asks as I shift in my seat to abate the sudden ache burning brighter than bright.

“Yes. Sure. I think that sounds like a great plan.”

Grayson: I want my cock buried so deep that you feel every damn inch of me.

“Are you sure you’re okay?”

“Yeah, why?” My voice breaks like a prepubescent teenager.

Grayson: I want you to come so hard you have to bite the pillow.

“You look a little flushed. Are you coming down with something?”

Grayson: You always have a choice. Isn’t that what you said to me once? Make a choice, Sidney. Isn’t it time to head to lunch?

“I mean, yeah, maybe.” I pull at my collar some. “Maybe that’s why I feel so flushed all of a sudden.”

Grayson: Meet me on the backside of The Cottages. Room Six. Fifteen minutes.

“Either that,” she says as she stands and heads to the door, only turning back to give me a wink, “or you’re guilty as hell. Maybe you should go take care of that itch texting you . . . or take some Tylenol. Whichever one it is, I think you should take the afternoon off.”

Grayson: Choose me.

“Oh.” It’s the only thing I can think to say because my brain is otherwise occupied imagining Grayson following through on his promises.

“And, Sid?”

“Yeah?”

“I sure hope he’s every bit worth breaking the rules.” She winks. “It’s about damn time. Your secret is safe with me.”

REVIEW AND EXCERPT TOUR: ONE BABY DADDY by Meghan Quinn

“What are you doing now that your team is out of the running for the Stanley Cup?”

Forget.

I need to forget. I need an escape.

Only one person isn’t falling for my reputation as the NHL’s Golden Boy; she captured my attention the minute she called me out for snooping through my best friend’s house. She didn’t want to hear my reason–she only wanted to playfully give me a hard time.

Adalyn is bold, sassy–and the perfect escape.

She’s everywhere. In town and in my dreams, and suddenly I need to spend every waking moment with her.

And I do, making this summer the best off-season I’ve ever had.

But in the midst of getting lost in Adalyn, what I don’t expect is to get her pregnant.

And what I definitely don’t expect is having to fight for her affection.

https://amzn.to/2x6ZaLU

My Review

One Baby Daddy’s golden boy, Hayden, is not only my favorite of Meghan Quinn’s heroes, but he’s also the ultimate book boyfriend because he’s an atypical professional athlete – one whose views on and desire for love as well as his thoughtfulness and caring ways puts him in a class all of his own. There seems to be nothing he wouldn’t do for the right woman, and while he knows in his gut and in his heart that Adalyn is who he wants, unavoidable circumstances create a fissure in their relationship, forcing tough decisions to be made and potentially ruining everything that’s developed between them.

I don’t necessarily believe that there’s such a thing as a prefect romance hero, but I would say that Hayden comes pretty darn close, which is why Adalyn’s change in attitude and her treatment of Hayden in the second half of the story frustrated the heck out of me. I get that her insecurities as well as her hormones play into her reactions and actions, but I just didn’t understand why she treated Hayden the way she did at certain points in the story AND the fact that she holds key information close to the vest and doesn’t seemed concerned with anyone else’s feelings but her own didn’t sit well with me. There were times in the story that I detested Adalyn, and I’ll admit, at times, I didn’t think she deserved Hayden, but her attitude and her decisions do improve, which eased some of the frustration I had concerning her selfishness and her inability to see the big picture when it came to what she and Hayden had the potential to be.

The witty exchanges as well as the charming and romantic interactions between Hayden and Adalyn illustrate just how good these two are together and they also prove why they shouldn’t let anything stand in their way from making a commitment to one another regardless of what may happen with Hayden’s career and/or Adalyn’s unexpected pregnancy. And while I know that’s easier said than none, especially when things continue to become more and more complicated, but because their foundation seems so solid, I didn’t quite grasp why everything became so difficult between them when life altered their respective paths.

Hayden and Adalyn’s romance is quite the slow burn, which is due, in part, to Hayden’s need to feel connected to Adalyn and his want for something more than just a physical reaction. The build-up and sexual tension resonates from the pages of the story, making the moment they finally do give into the feelings and desires flowing between them that much sweeter. Since being introduced to Meghan Quinn’s writing and characters, I’ve been hooked, and I’ve adored every story in her Dating by Numbers series, so the fact that readers get to catch up with previous characters as well as meet and get to know potential new heroes and/or heroines.

Excerpt

“Would you mind zipping up the back of my dress?” She walks toward me, her flowery scent floating in my direction, spiking my yearning into overdrive.

“Uh, yeah . . . sure.”

She turns around, and looks over her shoulder. The back of her dress is completely open, the zipper undone to just above the curve of her beautifully round ass.

Shit, all that smooth, tan skin, covered by nothing but the velvety fabric of the dress. Is she wearing underwear? She’s not wearing a bra and I see no panty line.

Clearing my throat, I ask, “Are you wearing underwear, Adalyn?”

From over her shoulder, she smiles shyly. “Yes, it’s small though.”

Of course it is. Why wouldn’t it be?

Not being able to stop myself, I take a second to float my fingertips up her spine. From the initial touch, her back arches and a small gasp releases from her lips, but before I can think about stopping, she melts into my touch. Stepping closer, I place my hand on the back of her hip, my thumb pressing into her ass while the other hand explores the bare expanse of her back. Her head falls to my shoulder. Her lips part, and when I snake to the front of her dress, her breath hitches.

Eyes closed, I take in ragged breaths, my fingers inching closer and closer to her front, my cock painfully hard.

It’s been so goddamn long—and being with Adalyn has only spurred on my need—but I want to make sure we’re in a good place before we commit to anything. I want to make sure she’s ready emotionally because the minute I bury myself deep inside her, I know there will be no turning back. She will be mine forever.

But maybe for now, I can just have a little touch . . .

My cock pressed against her butt, she expertly grinds her backside into me, her hands moving to my neck, pulling my head down to hers. I kiss the side of her neck, using the hand that’s gripping her hips to guide her with her grinding in just the right place.

Fuck, that feels good.

I grunt, the sound vibrating over her sleek neck. My hand on her stomach, she arches wanting more of my touch, silently asking me to move north.

And I fucking comply. Inch by slow inch, I guide my hand to just below her breasts. When I halt my pursuit, a displeased groan escapes her.

“Hayden, please.”

I squeeze my eyes shut, trying to find the willpower. Her fingernails dig into my scalp, spurring me on as she turns her head and finds my lips.

She kisses me.

Hot.

Wet.

Needy.

Her lips gliding across mine, her tongue diving into my mouth, her moans are vocal and sexy. Her delicious ass, pressing, grinding, undulating against my rock-hard cock makes me want to do so much more, makes me want to taste so much more.

Moving my hand higher, my fingertips graze the bottom of her breast. Soft. Round. Smooth. I caress her right below her nipple, never touching, just teasing . . . tempting.

Born in New York and raised in Southern California, Meghan has grown into a sassy, peanut butter eating, blonde haired swearing, animal hoarding lady. She is known to bust out and dance if “It’s Raining Men” starts beating through the air and heaven forbid you get a margarita in her, protect your legs because they may be humped.

Once she started commuting for an hour and twenty minutes every day to work for three years, she began to have conversations play in her head, real life, deep male voices and dainty lady coos kind of conversations. Perturbed and confused, she decided to either see a therapist about the hot and steamy voices running through her head or start writing them down. She decided to go with the cheaper option and started writing… enter her first novel, Caught Looking.

Now you can find the spicy, most definitely on the border of lunacy, kind of crazy lady residing in Colorado with the love of her life and her five, furry four legged children, hiking a trail or hiding behind shelves at grocery stores, wondering what kind of lube the nervous stranger will bring home to his wife. Oh and she loves a good boob squeeze!

New York Times Bestseller CD Reiss goes back to her roots with a dark, intense tale that breaks boundaries and shatters expectations in Rough Edge.

Even when he makes you beg?

Is there no pain or pleasure he cannot deliver?

What will you sacrifice to heal him?

Will he sacrifice his sanity to protect you from the exquisite torture of his cruel hands?

ROUGH EDGE TEASER WAR.jpg

My Review

I’ve learned to expect the unexpected when it comes to CD Reiss’ darker reads; I almost always go in blind, dispelling any and all theories right out of the gate, allowing Reiss to take me where she wants me to go, knowing that the journey is not straightforward and that it will push my boundaries when it comes to separating the world and characters she’s created from the conscious world outside.

But, I have to admit, even with a solid game plan like the one I initiated before I read page 1, I was not at all prepared for where Reiss took her characters and consequently took her readers in Rough Edge, and that’s because the dark erotic vibe that I’ve come to love when it comes to Reiss’ layered story lines is beyond anything I’ve seen, which means that for a lot of it, I was lost in the complications of the plot and confounded by the actions and reactions of two people who love each other with an emotion that is both obsessive and essential at the same time.

I don’t want to give any of the plot away because to truly appreciate how masterfully Reiss crafts readers’ introduction and initial interaction into this married couple and all that they must endure now that they are both no longer in the Armed Forces, it must be experienced without preconceived notions because once readers have been immersed in all the kinky fuckery that abounds in the story as well as the healthy doses of dark and twisty encounters, they’ll find they can’t let go of this addictive read even after the last page of the book is read.

Absolutely Mindfucked…that’s the only way I can describe how I felt after reading the beginning of Greyson and Caden’s story, and it’s not just from the boundaries that Caden pushes when it comes to his physical relationship with his wife; it’s also

the fact that it was extremely difficult to wrap my brain around the two sides of Caden’s personality that seem to co-exist – one dominating the other, at times, but neither ever fully gain control, which means that the man behind the monster and the monster behind the man are both actively responsible for the crazy ride Greyson and Caden experience.

I also have to say that as much as I attempted to delve further into both Greyson and Caden’s psyches to truly understand their perspectives and the reasons behind their words and actions, I could never quite grasp them, and while that’s frustrating for me as a reader who needs to understand the inner workings of the plot and its characters, the analytical literary nerd in me loves that I’m only getting small fragments of the characters’ reality, which means that as the series continues, those pieces will begin to create the big picture, which scares the hell out of me, but it also leaves me anxiously waiting to see all of their craziness out in the open.

4.5 Poison Apples

About the Author

CD Reiss is a New York Times bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn’t pick up she’s at the well hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master’s degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels.

She’s frequently referred to as the Shakespeare of Smut which is flattering but hasn’t ever gotten her out of chopping that cord of wood.

If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.

Midge Everette is an everyday woman, which means that older and younger readers alike will be able to connect with her, because while she may be 41 years old, the trials and tribulations she goes through in her story are situations that could happen to anyone of us, regardless of age. As a 40 year old woman myself, one with two boys of my own and a set of insecurities that come with growing older, I could identify with Midge’s internal musings and the way she handled things while feeling ill at ease with her decisions and actions.

Midge is an all-around amazing woman; her three boys are her life and she never weighs them down with her issues, preferring to allow them to grow up as normal as possible despite their divorced parents. She’s definitely a role model when it comes to parenting and her willingness to do whatever she can for her boys. Despite being divorced for three years, she hasn’t quite figured out how to get back into the dating pool, but that seems to change when a certain sexy and built man draws her in and appears to reciprocate the instantaneous connection she feels throughout her entire body.

Hank Paige has led a difficult life compounded by his rockstar status and his tendencies to indulge; he hit rock bottom over six years ago, and from that day forward, he has challenged himself to be and do better, not only for himself but also for those he loves and for those who need a person who’s seen and done it all and can relate to them because of it. But the one aspect of Hank’s life that he still struggles with seems to control his feelings and his actions when it comes to Midge and his desire for her.

The supporting characters in Midge and Hank’s lives play such a pivotal role in helping them to move forward as well as coming to terms with everything that has already happened. Because of Midge’s new group of friends, she starts to live again, more than just for her three sons, which is exactly what she needs to move forward and be happy again with where she is at in her life, regardless of her age, her body shape, or any other insecurity that makes her doubt the amazing woman that she is.

Midlife Crisis centers around Midge and Hank’s journey to find their way beyond their respective pasts and feel confident enough to put their hearts on the line when it comes to exploring their feelings for one another. There are definitely a collection of obstacles, both self-made and created by others, but at the heart of Midge and Hank’s story is the importance of friends and family and the necessity of living for oneself even when others depend on that person.

Older heroes and heroines may not appeal to all romance readers, but, to me, age doesn’t matter if the love story is told thoughtfully and passionately, which is the case in L.B. Dunbar’s romances for the over 40.

Blurb

Tristan Lopez is loyal to his brothers. He doesn’t really have a choice, born into a gang that has a chokehold on every kid that roams its streets. He gave his life to them willingly, knowing if he did then one day this kingdom, led by boys drunk with power and ruled by fear, would all be his.

He was loyal through it all. Loyal when prison took his dad away. Loyal when his face was touched by the cold metal of the rival gang’s gun. Loyal even though his mom begged him to run the moment she returned home from rehab.

He thought about becoming someone else. It was hard not to crave the life of a regular 17-year-old. It’s the only reason he stayed in school—to pretend. But he always fell back in line.

Loyal.

Riley Rojas didn’t belong in Tristan’s real world. She should have only been part of the fantasy, one of the many faces he got to pretend with amidst rows of metal chairs and desks and whiteboards with assignments. But there she was, moving boxes from the back of an old pick-up into a house Tristan had shot up on a dare with his friends only a few months before.

Tall enough to look him in the eyes and strong enough to fill his shadow, Riley took up space on his streets, her loud mouth fearless in the face of the gang leaders who terrified everyone else. She pushed Tristan around on the hard court, and she balled better than his friends—better than him
sometimes. She challenged him. She needed him. He liked it. And when her pale blue eyes stared into his, he quit wanting to pretend.

He couldn’t ask her to leave because she’d only dig her heels in deeper. He couldn’t ask because he didn’t want her to go. She was blurring his lines. She was testing his loyalty.

He was falling in love.

And it was going to tear him apart.

COVER REVEAL: Blind Love by Kelly Elliott

Harley and I had our whole lives planned out, until her plans changed, and those plans didn’t include me.

After years spent trying to get the love of my life out of my head and repair my too-damaged heart, I thought I was finally moving on…but life sure has a funny way of letting you know when those best-laid plans are about to be turned upside down.

My entire world was rocked when Harley unexpectedly moved back to Oak Springs. Every miserable moment I’d spent trying to get over her and every hour I’d wasted trying to erase her from my life came back to haunt me the minute she walked into my office, fear in her eyes, and asked me for help. Would I…or better yet, could I walk away from her this time after all that she had put me through?

What I really needed to know is would I be able to forge ahead with the future I had so meticulously planned—one that didn’t include Harley—or will her return finally open my eyes to a future full of endless possibilities?

Blind Love is book five in the Cowboys and Angels series.

My Review

If only Gia’s current writing in progress was full of the angst, heartache, and uncertainty that unfortunately fills her life ever since she realized exactly who her one-night stand/baby daddy was. Because if that was the case, she wouldn’t have to deal with Rush finding out the truth and quite possibly walking away from a connection that seemed destined to remain intact forever.

But now in a horrible twist of fate, Rush and Gia’s story has to be rewritten, and as much as she wants it to end with their happily ever after, Gia ultimately no longer has control over where they end up, putting Rush in an impossible position – one that will put him in the position of either playing the hero or the villain regardless of the fact that he’s just as much a victim in all of this as Gia is.

My one issue with Rebel Heir was that the main conflict was a bit too easy to identify, so heading into Rebel Heart, I was worried that the paternity reveal would be dragged out, making it the main complication of the second book’s story line, but I’m happy to say that, that was not the case; in fact, the secret did not remain hidden for long, but therein also lies the issue because it’s that information that leaves Rush conflicted, struggling to decide if his love for Gia is stronger than his hate for his brother.

It’s an extremely tenuous situation that Rush and Gia find themselves in, and while my heart was put through the ringer due to Rush’s soul searching process, I can’t blame him for needing the time to truly feel like he can give himself over to Gia and her baby accepting what he knows without any hesitation.

Did I feel Rush went a bit too far in some instances? Absolutely, but based on the animosity between him and his father and brother, there are so many overwhelming feelings to deal with and to overcome and I can’t imagine the kind of burdens that puts on Rush’s shoulders, so I can’t completely criticize his actions, but I did feel horrible for Gia as she tried to accept Rush’s distance, his mixed signals, and the real possibility that they may never be together in the way that they both so desperately want due to a set of circumstances that seem to be too far out of their control.

Rush and Gia’s journey to ‘no more unfortunately’ in their lives is an arduous task, but the fact that they don’t come completely unhinged as they delve through their separate issues as well as those they must face together speaks to the kind of people Rush and Gia are and it’s that idea that enabled me to hold on and to let Penelope Ward and Vi Keeland lead me where they needed me to go in order to understand how all the pieces of Rush and Gia’s story fit together and how those fractures get mended and made whole.

4.5 Poison Apples

How to kick off a great summer in the Hamptons:

Snag a gorgeous rental on the beach. Check.

Get a job at a trendy summer haunt. Check.

How to screw up a great summer in the Hamptons:

Fall for the one guy with a dark leather jacket, scruff on his face, and intense eyes that doesn’t fit in with the rest of the tony looking crowd. A guy you can’t have when you’ll be leaving at the end of the season.

Check. Check. Check.

I should add—especially when the guy is your sexy, tattooed God of a boss.

Especially when he not only owns your place of employment but inherited half of the town.

Especially when he’s mean to you.

Or so I thought.

Until one night when he demanded I get in his car so he could drive me home because he didn’t want me walking in the dark.

That was sort of how it all started with Rush.

And then little by little, some of the walls of this hardass man started to come down.

I never expected that the two of us, seemingly opposites from the outside, would grow so close.

I wasn’t supposed to fall for the rebel heir, especially when he made it clear he didn’t want to cross the line with me.

As the temperature turned cooler, the nights became hotter. My summer became a lot more interesting—and complicated.

All good things must come to an end, right?

Except our ending was one I didn’t see coming.
