About QUIET MAN

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Kristen Ashley comes a new story in her Dream Man series…

Charlotte “Lottie” McAlister is in the zone. She’s ready to take on the next chapter of her life, and since she doesn’t have a man, she’ll do what she’s done all along. She’ll take care of business on her own. Even if that business means starting a family.

The problem is, Lottie has a stalker. The really bad kind. The kind that means she needs a bodyguard.

Enter Mo Morrison.

Enormous. Scary.

Quiet.

Mo doesn’t say much, and Lottie’s used to getting attention. And she wants Mo’s attention. Badly.

But Mo has a strict rule. If he’s guarding your body, that’s all he’s doing with it.

However, the longer Mo has to keep Lottie safe, the faster he falls for the beautiful blonde who has it so together, she might even be able to tackle the demons he’s got in his head that just won’t die.

But in the end, Lottie and Mo don’t only have to find some way to keep hands off until the threat is over, they have to negotiate the overprotective Hot Bunch, Lottie’s crazy stepdad, Tex, Mo’s crew of frat-boy commandos, not to mention his nutty sisters.

All before Lottie finally gets her Dream Man.

And Mo can lay claim to his Dream Girl.

**Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you’ll enjoy each one as much as we do.**

My Review

I love the idea that every man deserves his Dream Girl and that every woman deserves her Dream Man, and in Quiet Man, readers get to see Lottie, Jet’s younger sister and Smithie’s premier stripper fight to get her guy, and while it’s because of a stalker that Moe Morrison enters Lottie’s life, that doesn’t negate the visceral effect they have on each other as Moe invades all aspects of Lottie’s life in order to keep her safe.

I absolutely loved getting to know Lottie better. She owns who she is and isn’t afraid to put anyone in their place for bad talking what she does or why she does it. She’s an absolute firecracker of a woman who is comfortable in her own skin and speaks her mind at all times because she knows her worth and the worth of those she loves. As an honorary Rock Chick, Tex’s step-daughter, and sister-in-law to one of the Hot Bunch guys, she has a whole crew of people at her back but she also can hold her own and isn’t afraid to fight for what she wants and deserves. Her strength, her intelligence, and her drive definitely shines through in this novella.

Moe Morrison is most definitely a man of few words, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t know how to communicate with his body and his facial expressions. Mo is more than honed in on everything happening around him and to be good at his job, he ensures that he’s always in control, remaining focused on protecting Lottie and keeping things professional until his protective detail is over and he can finally claim the woman who claimed him right back.

Lottie and Moe together make for one combustible situation and while there were times of miscommunication, assumptions, and less than professional encounters, it was beyond clear just how much they wanted each other and after the dust settled and it was finally their time, despite a few more obstacles, they definitely made their dreams comes true.

What’s not to love about a KA read that brings together some of my absolute favorites KA series (Rock Chick & Dream Man) and a bevy of well-known characters mixed with an introduction to new ones as well as a bit of insight into what’s to come for some of Hawk’s Commandos. I adored being back in this world and I can’t wait to see this tough alpha males be brought to their knees.

About KRISTEN ASHLEY

Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA and nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorize and she hadn’t taken her first breath!). Her mother said they took Kristen away, put her Mom back in her room, her mother looked out the window, and Gary was on fire (Dr. King had been assassinated four days before). Kristen’s Mom remembered thinking it was the end of the world. Quite the dramatic beginning.

Nothing’s changed.

Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana and has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus, she’s blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her family was (is) loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. They all lived together on a very small farm in a small farm town in the heartland. She grew up with Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing, it keeps getting better.

My Review

Okay, so full disclosure…this is my first read by Lucia Franco!

And holy shit, I sure started off with a bang.

Let me begin by saying that the blurb is deliberately vague when it comes to exactly what happens to the characters in this story; there are so many layers to the story line and its characters that people’s truths are slowly revealed throughout the course of the entire book, and even at the end, it’s clear that readers don’t know everything there is to know about the heroine or the hero.

In my opinion, the forbidden and taboo aspects of this story have very little to do with the hero and heroine’s age difference; in fact, I truly didn’t see it as an issue, even when the decades between them were made clear. There are so many other issues to contend with and so many ways that the agreement/deal that Aubrey and James made could destroy their lives as well as those closest to them.

Through Aubrey and James’ intimate, sensual, kinky, and emotional scenes, Lucia Franco clearly illustrates just how deep these two are with each other, even from the onset of their interactions. And the kind of connection they form could ruin them both in significant and life altering ways, but what’s also vividly shown is how difficult it is for them to separate themselves from each other – to keep a safe distance, so things don’t get anymore difficult or overwhelming than they already are.

But ultimately, this is where the angst comes into play and it is torture at times, and ultimately it’s what had me questioning the kind of person Aubrey is numerous times. I get that she felt like she was in a no-win situation, even at the beginning of the story, which is why Natalie’s revealed double-life was something that Aubrey gravitated toward…that and the way she viewed sex. For me, though, I took issue with her not being truthful to herself and stringing things and people along when it was more than obvious where she stood.

I also desperately wanted to understand James better. I don’t know how many times I wished James’ perspective was provided. It’s too easy to judge his words and his deeds, holding them against him because they break vows taken and they paint him as an immoral asshole who uses his money to get whatever and whoever he wants. And I felt this way about James BEFORE it was revealed who exactly he is in the grand scheme of things in this story.

For a first read of a new author, this one was a doozy, but I’m so glad I read it. Aubrey and James’ story is intense; it’s overwhelming, both for the characters and its readers; it pushes boundaries; it questions the truth of facades and the honest answers beneath the lies; it’s not an easy read because it crosses questionable lines and it also barrels over people’s morals, but it’s a well-written, thought-provoking, and provocative story that is well worth the read.

A competitive athlete for over ten years, Lucia Franco currently resides in sunny South Florida with her husband and two boys. Paranormal romance was her first love, but she has a soft spot in her heart for small-town and reunion romance stories.

When Lucia is not hard at work on her next novel, you can find her relaxing with her toes in the sand at a nearby beach.

RELEASE WEEK REVIEW: SINK OR SWIM by Tessa Bailey

Sink or Swim is the final installment of the Beach Kingdom Series (following Mouth to Mouth and Heat Stroke).

Sink or Swim is Andrew and Jiya’s story (friends to lovers!) and can be read as a standalone title, although the characters are introduced in the two previous series books.

Sink or Swim will release on August 20th on Kindle Unlimited.

Blurb

Andrew Prince wakes up before everyone else. He schedules the bar shifts, demands perfection from Long Beach’s lifeguards—most of all himself—and makes sure the family debts are paid. His unfaltering worth ethic might leave him exhausted, but it comes with one advantage. It distracts him from the love he’s been harboring since childhood for the girl next door—who he cannot have.

Jiya Dalal has dreams. To fly a plane, see the world below…and prove irresistible to her best friend, Andrew. But she needs to be a good daughter first, which is becoming an increasingly difficult task, since her parents expect a good marriage and the man she loves with all her heart refuses to pursue the blistering connection between them. Just when she’s beginning to believe Andrew truly doesn’t want her, a moonlight tryst on the beach exposes his true feelings. But an echo from the past kept them apart before…and it’s only growing louder with every stolen kiss…

My Review

I admittedly have a love/hate relationship with friends-to-lovers’ romances. I love them because there’s a foundation to the hero and heroine’s relationship; they share a backstory and a solid connection before initiating or finally admitting to anything more. My disdain, maybe that’s too harsh of a word, but sometimes, that’s exactly how I feel, comes from the characters’ fear of taking that next step because the mixed signals and the hot and cold reception that they receive from one another causes more problems than it would to just be honest about becoming something more.

In the final book in Tessa Bailey’s Beach Kingdom series, readers are finally given Andrew and Jiya’s story, which means that it’s time for the only Prince brother to get his other half. But this Prince male may be the most stubborn, and while logically I understand why Andrew keeps his distance from Jiya, it’s not any less frustrating to know how much he loves her but fears he doesn’t deserve her from an event from his past.

I truly felt bad for Jiya; I know that Andrew wasn’t playing games with her and that he desperately wanted to be with her as more than best friends, but I almost didn’t want her to keep waiting for him to get his act together, to stop punishing himself and stop bearing a burden that shouldn’t be his alone. But what I also understand is that the heart wants what the heart wants and Jiya’s never been one to give up or stop fighting. What does complicate things for Jiya is the pressure from her mother to move on, to find a husband, and to settle down and her mother believes that Jiya will have none of those things with Andrew.

There’s a little bit of everything in Sink or Swim: there’s an exhaustive amount of sexual tension, quite a few steamy scenes, a bevy of emotional confrontations, some self-loathing, and a bit of suspense. And all of these plot points make for a good read and a satisfying conclusion to a great series.

4 Poison Apples

Excerpt

Jiya looked up and found Andrew watching her intently. “What is this, Andrew?”

“We’re dancing,” he rasped, his gaze slightly unfocused.

“You’ve never danced with me like this before.”

His gaze strayed to her lips, before he resolutely dragged them away. “Do you want to stop?”

“No and that’s the problem.” Come on, Mrs. I Don’t Play Games Anymore, bring up the elephant in the room. It’s not going away. “You’ve been different with me lately. Is it…” She took two bracing breaths. “Is it because I’m dating?”

He started to deny it, then changed his mind. “Might be. Yeah. I know that’s fucked up,” he said. “You’ve always been min—my best friend. We won’t have this if you start dating someone seriously. If you…”

“Get married?”
His complexion turned gray. “Mmm.”
Cement caked her insides, but she was used to it by now. She’d loved Andrew since she was a child. She’d waited patiently for him to love her back—as more than a friend—and he hadn’t. He’d done nothing about it. So while she yearned to dissect his every word and rejoice in them, ached for what he was feeling, she couldn’t do it anymore without being a fool. “Ask me the question, Andrew. The one you ask me every night.”

A line formed between his brows. “Can I do anything for you, Jiya?”

“Yes.” She took his face in her hands. “You can stay my friend. No matter what happens. Fine, things are changing in my life. But I couldn’t bear it if I ever lost what we have. Just stay my friend. Promise me.”

His jaw bunched. “You know I’d cut my heart out before saying no to you, right?”

“Yes.”

“Then you have your answer.” He wet his lips. “But we’re finishing the dance.”

About the Author

Tessa Bailey is originally from Carlsbad, California. The day after high school graduation, she packed her yearbook, ripped jeans and laptop, driving cross-country to New York City in under four days.

Her most valuable life experiences were learned thereafter while waitressing at K-Dees, a Manhattan pub owned by her uncle. Inside those four walls, she met her husband, best friend and discovered the magic of classic rock, managing to put herself through Kingsborough Community College and the English program at Pace University at the same time. Several stunted attempts to enter the work force as a journalist followed, but romance writing continued to demand her attention.

She now lives in Long Island, New York with her husband of eleven years and six-year-old daughter. Although she is severely sleep-deprived, she is incredibly happy to be living her dream of writing about people falling in love.

Anthony started writing years ago as a hobby, but it quickly turned into a passion. He first began publishing under the name, Kane Caldwell, but has since changed the name he will continue publishing under. He is the epitome of a country boy with jeans, t-shirt, hat (No, not a cowboy hat. Lol), scruffy face, work boots on, driving his truck and definitely not a guy you’d picture writing romance. Anthony works in the construction business where he runs his own crew. He has two awesome boys, and an amazing woman that keeps him on the edge. He drinks way too much coffee and probably curses in one day what others curse in their lifetime. Lol! Anthony resides in the south where the weather is warm but most times sweltering hot. During down time, he loves to be surrounded by family, friends, great food, or engrossed in a good book. And of course, putting his imagination to work, where reality and fantasy collide.

RELEASE BLITZ: The Candle Palace by Devney Perry

Sometimes a single flame can ignite a love that lasts a lifetime.

Milo Phillips knows the meaning of pain. Suffering through the most intense physical agony of his life, he’s confined to a hospital bed to bear it alone. More than once, he wishes he’d died in the explosion that melted and mangled his skin. Darkness consumes him, snuffing all the joy in his life and leaving an empty hole in its place.

But one day, a flicker of light sneaks into his hospital room, driving away some of the hopelessness. For the first time in months, pain isn’t all he feels.

The flicker’s name is Sara Foster, his new nurse. Milo just hopes that Sara can see past his scars. Because underneath, his heart has begun beating again just for her.

My Review

I’m a huge fan of Devney Perry’s Jamison Valley series; the stories are full of wounded/tortured souls, of external/internal scars, of struggle and triumph, of darkness and light, of the lowest lows and the highest highs. They’re about the meaning of family, of love, of sacrifice, and of forgiveness.

Ever since meeting Milo Phillips, I’ve wanted to hear his story, to understand what’s beneath his anger, his pain, and his inability to find even the smallest amount of light in his darkness. The way that Perry crafts Milo and gives voice to all of his struggles truly illustrates just how low he has spiraled since his accident, but readers can also see the light that Sara brings to his life and how she refuses to give up on him, even when it wants to give up on himself.

Sara has the kindest heart, the warmest smiles, and the gentlest demeanor, and despite losing her dad and having a mother who never put Sara first, she’s a compassionate, genuine and hardworking nurse and person. While the saying a ray of light is a bit cliche, it’s exactly what Sara brings to her patients’ lives and those she cares about and while her feelings for Milo may be unadvised due to her role in his care, she’s exactly what he needs and deserves and that becomes vividly clear the further into the story you go.

I adore the meaning behind The Candle Palace and how it came to be, even if it is a bit morbid. As someone who loves analogies, this one worked for me and it has limitless interpretations that all fit this story, one way or another. The way I see it…The Candle Palace is where a torch can remain lit, even when it’s determined to extinguish itself when things feel overwhelming and darkness seems to surround it. And, to some extent, readers can relate to this idea, understand how difficult life can be at times, and agree with the idea that ‘it’s bad before it gets better.’

I hope Devney Perry continues to bring readers back to Jamison Valley, but even if she doesn’t, I know that the characters’ stories and the lessons taught will stay with me for quite some time.

My Review

Despite the number of Leylah Attar books I have sitting on my kindle, I haven’t had the opportunity to read one, so when I saw the sign-up for Moti on the Water, I immediately signed up to review, excited to finally be able to read Attar’s words and immerse myself into her story, characters, and the world she created.

And after reading Moti and Alex’s story, I know I need to find the time to read her other books because there’s a uniqueness to the way she crafts and voices her stories, and in a genre that’s saturated with so many similar story lines and characters, I appreciate the diversity that resonates in all aspects of Attar’s newest release.

Moti Ferreira is a heroine who many readers will relate to…she’s definitely at a crossroads of sorts, attempting to figure out where her place is in the life that seems to be leaving her behind because she’s never put herself first, remaining the family ‘pleaser’ and existing under the mandates of her controlling mother. She’s always felt a sense of duty to her family, aiming to take care of everyone but herself, ensuring that her path in life was made by those before her and based on foretold notions that she was more than pushed to believe.

I loved Moti’s journey to self-discovery, finding her own voice and going after her own needs and desires. It’s not easy to breakaway from the life you’ve always lived, but it was more than time for Moti to pave her own way, and she has Alex to thank for some of the courage she finds

Alexandros Veronis is quite the enigma; I loved the chapters that were told from his perspective. Everything about him spoke to Moti, even when she didn’t want it to and as irritating as she thought he was, she gravitated toward him because he offered her something she’s never had – his full attention and the fact that he watched out for her while she tried to take care of everyone else.

The dysfunction involved in Moti’s extended family as well as the other people traveling with them was mind-boggling. Their selfishness, their meddling, their degrading words directed toward each other as well as the bombs that are dropped at the end of the story speak to a group of people who weren’t truly living their lives because they were trapped in the past, fixated on what the future would be like or too afraid to branch out and take a chance. So, in some ways, because Moti was able to separate herself from everyone, making her own choices when it came to Alex, her family was forced to look inward, look at themselves and figure out how to make things better for themselves, however that may be.

I’m thrilled that I was finally able to read one of Leylah Attar’s story, and while I would definitely classify Moti on the Water as a romantic comedy, it’s so much more than a humorous read…it’s one that speaks of the importance of family, the strength of traditions, the relationship between fate and logic, and an array of other life lessons that are all brought to life amidst a group of eccentric, high maintenance, and over-the-top characters  who finally try to make things right before it’s too late.

It was as if the Greek gods had orchestrated a cosmic game, put me in the center of it, and placed bets on what I would do.

This is who you’re supposed to be with, said Zeus and Hera, holding up a marble bust of Nikos. These two head honchos of Greek mythology threw their son off the top of Mount Olympus because they didn’t like the way he looked. You didn’t want to incur their wrath.

Aphrodite, Goddess of love, clapped her hands.Ah, but what you really wantto do right now is kiss Alex, don’t you? You really have to watch this gal pal. It was her husband who’d been thrown off Mount Olympus, so if it’s happily-ever-after that you’re gunning for, proceed with caution.

Always listen to your mother, Hestia piped in. She was the goddess of family and domesticity. She deserved a lot of kudos. Not many of the gods practiced what they preached, but Hestia stuck to her guns, and probably listened to her mother. Hence, she remained a virgin.

Dionysus, the Greek deity of wine and ecstasy, raised his glass. Pffft. Eat, kiss, and be merry! Pirates once seized him, thinking he was too incapacitated to fight back. Dionysus filled their ship with vines and turned them into dolphins. Moral of the story? Don’t mess with a Greek god even when he’s drunk. Also, he gave the kind of advice you could really get on board with.

Blurb

The last time I saw Declan St. James was at our rehearsal dinner. That was shortly before he jilted me at the altar. To avoid the swarm of whispers and finger pointing every time I dared to show my face in public, I fled two hours south to Atlanta and never looked back. Over the last decade, I’d planned hundreds of scenarios about how our next meeting would go down. The expletives I’d hurl at him. Which knee I might use to annihilate his balls. Which dimpled cheek on his ridiculously handsome face I would send a stinging slap across.

But being elbow deep in a cow’s ass was not one of them.

Normally, I didn’t get up close and personal to a bovine’s rectum. At least not since veterinarian school. But desperate times found me back home to attend my grandfather’s funeral, who happened to be the town’s large animal vet. Those two facts had left me wading through manure in Roy Wallace’s pasture to care for a distressed heifer.

While time and maturity seemed to have changed him from the boy I knew, I still wasn’t falling for his charm. Or his hard, chiseled body. Or ass you could eat dinner off of.

No, I wasn’t going back down that street again. Unfortunately, Declan didn’t seem to get the message. Instead, he seemed as stubborn as he ever was and ready for a fight. It’ll be the fight of his life for me to let him back in my heart.

My Review

The hero and heroine in Katie Ashley’s newest release share a complicated past – one that still burdens both of them, mainly because since the day that Declan St. James jilted Peyton Beasley at the altar over a decade ago, they’ve never spoken, which means that Declan’s never apologized and Peyton’s never dealt with all of the emotions that have festered inside for the past ten years.

Returning to and remaining in Hayesville was something Peyton hadn’t planned to do, especially since Declan never left their hometown, so when her hand is forced, she does her best to steer clear of her ex because her hurt feelings are still so raw due to the man things left unsaid between them.

As a second chance romance lover, the determining factor when it comes to the hero and heroine and my enjoyment of the story is in regards to the characters’ maturation. Despite past mistakes made, regardless of how big or small, I want to be able to see them grow as people and understand that who they were before is no longer who they are now, and this definitely applies to Declan and Peyton, and even though it takes Peyton a bit longer than Declan, which makes sense given the heartache he caused her, by the time their story is complete, the past has been dealt with and the present and perhaps the future are the only things that matter.

Reining Her In is a sweet second chance romance set in a small town. It’s a story about forgiveness, about not being stuck in the past, about understanding that other people’s decisions don’t and shouldn’t control anyone else’s life, and what I appreciated about the story the most was the fact that Ashley didn’t add unnecessary obstacles to keep Declan and Peyton apart – the focus is on letting go of the past and moving forward, which is exactly what both of these characters needed.

COVER REVEAL: Half-Truths by Claire Contreras

Half-Truths by Claire Contreras

Release Date: October 21st

Blurb

You’ve heard of these groups – the secretive ones that only the crème de la crème are invited into, the ones outsiders speculate about for centuries – I’m the second in my family invited to attend, but to them, I’m fresh meat. New blood. New money, too.

They think they’ll elbow past me, that I’m here for their amusement, for them to walk all over, they’ll find out soon enough that I’m not.

I may look like one of them, with my designer bags and clothes straight from the Parisian runways, but I’m not. I’m here for answers, to take revenge for blood spilled on their centuries-old Persian rugs.

I transferred here in search for answers about what happened to my older brother, who hightailed out of here, and my friend who seemingly disappeared into thin air. I certainly wasn’t here for the attention of the star hockey player, regardless of how much he willed my eyes his way. I wasn’t here for his scrutiny or his judgment or to read into his mysterious aura. I was here for the society, because only they held the answers I needed. That was, until I found out that in order to get those answers, I needed to go through him. He’s saying if I want in, I have to play by their rules, follow their lead.

It’s a game I’m willing to play.

I may be the second person I know of to be invited into their society, but I’ll be the first to make it out intact.
