What happens when a dare goes too far?

Maddox Coulter. Reckless bad boy. Infamous playboy. My nemesis. And now my best friend.

I know he’ll never leave me hanging. He knows I’ll never refuse a dare. Everywhere we go we turn heads, but it’s not like that.

Until it is.

For one of us, anyway.

I’ve always known he would be my downfall. But I trusted him to catch me.

He proved me wrong.

Maddox has gone too far, and I don’t know if I want to rein him in or push us further into dangerous territory.

He tells me those three little words that I crave. Three little words I want from no one else.

I dare you.

Except this time, it’s no simple dare. This could burn us to the ground.

“I dare you to fuck him.”

RELEASE REVIEW: Cowboy in Colorado by Jasinda Wilder

Blurb

It should have been simple and straightforward—business, and nothing but business. A quick trip to Colorado to scout out a location for my newest real estate development acquisition. Fly in, drive to the location, talk the owners into selling, sign some papers, and go home.

A business trip like any other, something I’ve done hundreds of times without issue.

This time, however, I was waylaid. First by a runaway horse—and then by an angry, stormy pair of vivid blue eyes, a massive, mountainous set of brawny shoulders, a strong, powerful pair of hands, and a voice like thunder over the horizon.

Will is a man out of another era, a man of stillness and action in equal measure—a man in complete possession of himself and his world in a way I’ve never experienced. And suddenly, somehow, he comes to possess me, my mind, my heart, and and my body, in a way neither of us are ready for, and neither of us know how to resist.

What should have been a simple business deal quickly spirals out of control, becoming a struggle of life and death, a battle of hearts and passion.

My Review

Cowboy in Colorado, the second book in Jasinda Wilder’s Fifty States of Love Series, tells Brooklyn Ballenger and Will Auden’s story, and while these two characters are from polar opposite worlds – she’s a confident city slicker and he’s a small town rancher – they’re more alike than they originally think, but it’s also those similarities that make things tense and electric between them, forcing them both to acquire a fairly new perspective when it comes to life and to love.

Brooklyn is quite the head strong and driven business woman, and she’s ready to prove herself to her father and make the real estate development acquisition division of her father’s company profitable, and it’s with that goal in mind that she heads to Auden Town, Colorado and comes face-to-face with an arrogant and closed-off alpha rancher.

Will’s a guy who is absolutely set in his ways; he has no desire to change anything about his ranch and he most certainly doesn’t want some well-dressed, uppity woman to talk to him about a proposition for his land that he has no desire to listen to or agree to, regardless of how attractive he finds her or the fact that there seems to be something sizzling beneath the surface when they’re in the same vicinity.

But Fate and Mother Nature refuse to allow these two to forget about each other, so as much as Brooklyn and Will want to move on from their tense interactions and get on with their lives, they’re brought together, once again, and this time around, things are even more tenuous and also headed in a direction that will either lead them to want to murder each other or to give into the sexual tension and chemistry that’s surrounded them from day one.

Man, are these two characters something else! They can’t get out of their own damn way enough to realize how good they could be together if they both got over themselves and opened their eyes and their hearts. I do have to say that some readers might take issue with Will’s jerkish behavior because it does feel a bit over-the-top at times, but it’s clear that who he is under his arrogant demeanor is someone worth getting to know and that can only occur if he’s given a pass for some of his earliest bad behavior.

I love the idea of this series, and I’m beyond excited for Married in Michigan; it’s my home state and I can’t wait to see what parts of the state Jasinda Wilder writes about in her cross country romance story.

REVIEW: Coming Up Roses by Staci Hart

Everyone hates part of their job, and I hate Luke Bennet.

Coming Up Roses, an all-new must read enemies to lovers romantic comedy from Staci Hart is available now!

CUR-ebook

Everyone hates parts of their job.

Maybe it’s the paperwork. Maybe it’s the day-to-day grind. Maybe it’s that client who never knows what they want, or the guy who always cooks fish in the microwave.

But not me. I love every corner of the Longbourne Flower Shop, every flower, every petal, every stem. I love the greenhouse, and I love Mrs. Bennet, my boss. I love creating, and I love being a florist. I don’t hate anything at all.

Except for Luke Bennet.

The Bennet brothers have come home to help their mom save the flower shop, and Luke is at the helm. His smile tells a tale of lust, loose and easy. He moves with the grace of a predator, feral and wild. A thing unbridled, without rules or constraint.

When he comes home to save Longbourne, I almost can’t be mad at him.

Almost.

He doesn’t remember that night I’ll never forget. That kiss, touched with whiskey and fire. It branded me like a red-hot iron. But it meant nothing to him.

Everyone hates part of their job, and I hate Luke Bennet.

Because if I don’t, I’ll fall in love with him.

My Review

As an English teacher, I adore modern retellings of literary classics, and Pride and Prejudice is one of my absolute favorites, especially when Staci Hart works her magic and crafts her own contemporary version of a beloved story.

What I find most intriguing about Tess and Luke’s love/hate relationship at the onset of the story is the fact that Luke has no idea why Tess garners such disdain for him, but it’s all about first impressions with Tess and she can’t see past the arrogant, irresponsible, and trouble-making guy who broke her heart all those years ago. But thankfully, Luke proves Tess wrong, coming through in big ways for his family’s floral shop and taking the time to get to know who Tess is and just how perfect a match they really are.

Both Tess and Luke are dynamic characters whose past, in a lot of ways, dictate their present. Tess doesn’t trust easily, doesn’t take risks, and doesn’t step outside of her comfort zone because she’s afraid to get hurt; it’s her fear and her inability to live in the present that holds her back, but when Luke reenters her life, a new Tess emerges – one who is happy living in the moment with him and taking a chance of a man who she judged wrongly due to one interaction that he didn’t remember.

I love how Luke is perceived to be the under achiever…to be unreliable and unstable because he proves that notion wrong and then some. Because Hart provides readers with Luke’s perspective, we’re able to get inside his head to hear his internal musings about Tess and the reasons behind his actions when it comes to his ex. This firsthand insight is valuable for readers to truly see just how incredible he is.

The Bennets are a rowdy bunch and that’s what makes them such an endearing family. When their family floral business needed all hands on deck, that’s exactly what the Bennet siblings do, which is how Luke storms back into Tess’ life, throwing her off-balance and unearthing an array of dormant feelings about a shared encounter that Luke doesn’t remember. The way this family comes together and the love that shines through even when they’re arguing makes me more than a little excited to read about the other members of the Bennet family!

About Staci

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life — a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can’t forget that. She’s also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She’s been a wife, though she’s certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She’s also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she’s been drinking whiskey.

From roots in Houston to a seven year stint in Southern California, Staci and her family ended up settling somewhere in between and equally north, in Denver. They are new enough that snow is still magical. When she’s not writing, she’s reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.

Age is just a number.

Just like he’s just a boy and I’m just a girl.

Except that’s not true, is it?

Because fifteen may be a number, but it’s bigger than that. Bigger than us.

It’s a number that separates us.

An excuse that keeps us apart.

My Review

The truth about tomorrow is…

*it’s not guaranteed

*it isn’t promised

*it’s used as an excuse to not do something

*it’s used as a way to avoid heavy conversations/situations

*it eventually turns into today, regardless if it was a truth or a lie told

There are important lessons involved in the above ideas about tomorrow, and in B. Celeste’s newest release, The Truth About Tomorrow, her main characters, Ollie James and Charlie Tucker, experience firsthand how making promises of tomorrow can lead to heartbreak, loneliness, regrets, and lies.

Before I go any further in my review, I feel it’s important for readers to know that Ollie and Charlie’s story is an age-gap/forbidden romance. There’s a 15 year age difference between them, and while that alone may not be overly important, what is, is the fact that their mutual attraction as well as their capitulation to those feelings occurred when she was still a minor.

BUT…

And there most definitely is a BUT when it comes to these two characters, and it centers around the fact that the cliched idea of age being only a number and something that doesn’t clearly define who someone is, is absolutely demonstrated  in this story line, especially when it comes to the young heroine.

It’s clear that Charlie is not a typical young adult. Due to her past, she views life much differently than others her age and understands what’s important about truly living. Even if she hasn’t quite figured everything out for herself and still keeps a lot locked up inside of her, she’s wise beyond her 16 years.

The ways that Charlie grows and evolves throughout the course of the story demonstrates the work she put in to deal with her past and to be fully present in the here and now, and even though she struggles to confront what happened to her and struggles to allow people fully in to her life and to her heart for fear of what they can do to her, she never gives up on trying…she never gives up on herself, which is commendable.

Ollie was the wild card for me in this story, but it’s not because I thought he should have known better than to have feelings for a teenage girl who has experienced trauma he can’t begin to understand. What frustrated me about Ollie was how he chose to cope with his attraction to Charlie and the steps he took to remove her from his mind. There were many times that I thought he acted like a childish coward, and I know he had his own baggage that he never learned how to cope with, but I wanted him to see the risks Charlie was taking for him and the fact that she made him happy and fight with every part of himself to prove they were meant to be together despite the obstacles, despite the age difference, despite the fact that they would have to contend with disapproval.

B. Celeste is a new-to-me author, and I’m glad that I was introduced to her writing. I appreciate the fact that she doesn’t sugarcoat the difficult lessons and situations that life throws at people. She also doesn’t force her characters’ journey to be one filled with only forward progress because that’s way too unrealistic, especially given the characters’ age difference as well as all of the extenuating circumstances that surround them. I will definitely be checking out her future releases.

Excerpt

“Show me how to play,” I say.

Her body leans back as her brows pinch with a dubious stare. “You want me to teach you how to play piano?”

I nod. “The song you played. I like it.”

She blinks, brushing her fingers through her hair. “It’s about learning to love people’s faults and pain for what they are. Beautiful.”

My head cocks. “Why is that?”

She wets her bottom lip. “I guess when you love someone, you don’t get to choose which parts. You’re getting every single piece of their being, scarred or not.”

Her eyes trail to her hand, scarred with white and pink marks. My fingers graze over each one, causing her to suck in a breath and freeze as I caress the marred flesh. They’re rougher than the rest of her hand, but part of her nonetheless.

Meeting her eyes, we stay like that for a few long moments. Neither of us says a thing or moves an inch. We just remain touching, staring, being there in one another’s company.

Then I pull away. “What are the keys I need to learn for the song?”

She exhales then shows me the basics.

It’s a silent admission between us.

Your scars are beautiful, Charlie.

Blurb

I’m an outcast and a loner, named for death itself. Fate wasn’t supposed to have plans for me.

But then she came back—the girl I once kissed in a thorn-covered chapel in the woods. She came back, and I could no more resist her than I could pry out my own heart. And by some trick of fate, she wants me as much as I want her. The only problem? She also wants the man who owns Thornchapel, Auden Guest.

And so do I.

Eight years ago, I did something to Auden, something terrible. He hurt me back the only way he knew how, and so here we are: our hatred seasoned with pain and my loneliness seasoned with longing. The only thing we can agree on is Proserpina Markham, and she wants us to find a way to be together—all three of us.

If Auden wants to earn her as his submissive, then he has to earn me as well.

But with the discovery of bones behind the altar and the carnal revel of Beltane fast approaching, it’s becoming clear that Thornchapel’s secrets are much deeper and older than any of us could have ever guessed. And no matter how bright and merry a feast of sparks may be, it’s always followed by ashes.

And darkness.AVAILABLE NOW!!

My Review

There’s something so decadently seductive in the way Sierra Simone crafts her romances – it’s not just the amount of steam and kink found in her scenes, but it’s the sensuality that resonates in her word choice and in how she structures her sentences to amp up the sexiness of the situation as well as illustrate the frenzy of touches, the essentialness of characters’ connections. But the appeal further expands when Simone integrates historical, contemporary, sexual, and religious ideas/ideals, not necessarily arguing one side more than the other but providing readers with a comprehensive outlook in all areas, proving that these areas are not simply black and white, and it’s the gray area of all of them that lends to captivating storytelling, even when frustration sets in because not all questions have answers and not all answers are what readers expect or perhaps even want.

The complexity of the Thornchapel series as well as the Feast of Sparks story line is twofold:

Multiple Main Characters – In A Lesson in Thorns, Poe and Auden are the main focus, but Saint, Rebecca, Delphine, and Becket all play pivotal roles in both the group’s past as well as their present. In Feast of Sparks, the main insight is gained about Saint, learning more of his past as well as the highs and lows of his relationships with the other members of the group, especially Auden. In the present, it’s clear that there is so much at stake for these characters and as readers learn about each person’s connection to the chapel, we also understand that there is still a great deal unknown about the group and the role each character plays in both the present and the past.

An Array of Overarching Story Components – There’s mystery and secrets, sensual and hardcore sexual experimentation, BDSM and multiple partners, religious and ideological concepts.

And all of them play into the other ones, offering necessary insight and hard truths that many do not take the time to understand and rarely ever accept.

It’s the details and history that Sierra Simone provides in her stories that keep readers invested in her words and her characters. Simone uses her romances as a teaching tool, delving into the history of religion, of man’s evolution, of the taboo ideas that people feel when it comes to crossing sexual boundaries. And because her words are provocative and her story lines seamlessly blend steam and sultriness with intellectual and philosophically perspectives, each of her books is so much more than smutty romance, which I so appreciate.

Excerpt

Shame, hot and prickling, needles everywhere at my face and chest and belly as I begin to bend down to the floor. The cool air that caresses my pussy is now everywhere as the position begins to expose my most secret flesh, and there’s no pretending away the reality of what I’m doing. I’m doing something I’ve never done before, I’m offering up the filthiest part of me for inspection, and despite everything the three of us have shared in the past twenty-four hours, I’m flooded with shame. It’s real shame now, not play-shame, and my safe word floats to the top of my mind, a buoy in the clear waters.

Convivificat.

I don’t want to safe out right now, I’m nowhere near the edge, but it’s nice to have it there all the same. Reassuring. There’s nothing they can do that I can’t stop.

And anyway, this is who I am—who I’ve been growing into ever since I found the words to define it.

My Review

Run or jump?

Even though this question didn’t replace the BOOM, it definitely goes with it because it was clear that December Mayson and Gareth Black were drawn to each other from the very moment they saw one another, but there were extenuating circumstances to their instant attraction and after some childish reactions and actions, it didn’t look like the BOOM was going to matter if they didn’t get their shit together and understand what was standing right in front of them.

But Ember and Gareth work things out and they both decide to jump, but now the next question is how far?!?!

December is probably the Mayson who I most relate to…she’s quiet, a bookworm, would rather hang back in the shadows, quirky – as much as she stays in her shell, but what’s also within her is the idea that the right guy could make this good girl a little or a lot bad in all the best ways. But it’s the maternal and loving side of December that really shines through in her and Gareth’s story. She provides Gareth’s two boys the stability and normalcy that they’ve never had because their mother is an absentee one. She shows both Max and Mitchell the love they deserve and she follows through for them, which is something they desperately craved.

Gareth is one hell of a father and man, and despite the baggage he carries and the many jobs he has, he makes sure his boys know how much he loves them and shows them how much better they make his life. He’s honest and open with them, and he tells it like it is in difficult situations, especially when it comes to his boys’ mother. It’s clear just how much these three guys needed December in their lives, and the fact that it works rather smoothly despite the bumpy start they had speaks volumes about the type of people December and Gareth are.

The Mayson clan is back in all its loud, overprotective, and devoted glory in Until December, and because I’m not new to this family, I’ve seen how tenacious, family-oriented, loving and protective each member is; they understand what’s important and they fight for it at all costs, even if that means putting themselves in uncomfortable or dangerous situations, which is exactly what Gareth is willing to do for his boys and for Ember.

I’ll never stop wanting to go back to Aurora Rose Reynolds’ #BOOM world because each and every story mixes the sweet with the sexy and develops from the onset of the BOOM to the happily ever after each couple ends up with after they figure out just how good they could be together.

My Review

Even though I don’t get to read that many paranormal romances anymore, due to my blogging and editing schedule, I’ll always be the first in line to read and to get wicked when Jennifer L. Armentrout releases one.

Armentrout’s Wicked trilogy illustrates the good and evil that comes with power and how the crown has the ability to both restore and destroy, especially when there are those who want the King to become their dark and dangerous minion instead of the lasting light so many others crave.

Readers familiar with this Trilogy know who Caden and Brighton are and understand what seems to be building between them, but in The King, their connection grows even stronger and both seem to come into their own as the story progresses.

Readers get another side of Caden – one that is less formal and more real and Brighton proves just how strong she is compared to how she’s portrayed herself up to this point. These two have so many obstacles to contend with, but it’s clear that if they stand by each other and fight for what they want, both with one another and with the world they live, they’ll be able to defeat those looking to control the crown.

Caden and Brighton’s journey does not end with The King, which means that readers will need to wait to see what those against these plan to do to acquire the throne and what that means for everyone involved on both sides.

REVIEW: The Guy on the Right by Kate Stewart

Fall in love with Theo and Laney today!

Blurb

Strike One-My mother named me Theodore after her favorite chipmunk.

Not cool, Mom.

I‘ve spent most of my life answering to Teddy, because I couldn’t make Theo work.

Except for here. College. The place where all bets are off, and I’ve managed to redeem myself.

There’s only one problem, my new roommate, Troy, is football royalty and looks like he stepped off the set of an Abercrombie shoot.

Doesn’t matter, I cook a mean breakfast for his panty parade, and we get along well.

And anyway, this year I got the girl. And she’s perfect.

That’s right. Theodore Houseman, former band geek, now marching band rock star has finally landed the girl of his dreams.

Everything is perfect.

That is, until Troy takes a good look at her.

I’m not going down without a fight. As a matter of fact, I’m not going down at all. As glorious as these days may be for my all-star roommate, Laney is my end game.

I may not know much about play strategy, but I’ve been the good guy my whole life. I’ve been listening and I know exactly what women want. Framed in a picture standing next to me, Troy may seem like Mr. Perfect, but he’s underestimating the guy on the right.

Spoiler alert: In this story, the underdog is going to win.

My Review

Friends-to-lovers is absolutely one of my favorite romance tropes; there’s just something about a relationship built on a foundation of friendship that creates a more stable connection – one that can grow as deeper and bigger feelings are felt by both individuals. And what I so appreciate about Kate Stewart’s latest release, The Guy on the Right, is that, even though the story line is more of a romantic comedy than the high angst readers are used to, Stewart’s flawlessly entertaining writing and multifaceted characters remain, captivating her readers yet again but also leaving them with a smile on their faces and and quite a few laughs along the way.

I will admit that it did take me a bit to get into Theo and Laney’s story, but I think that had more to do with me wanting them to hurry up and admit their feelings for each other and prove to one another that they fit perfectly together. Stewart’s stories don’t work that way, and it’s definitely something that I appreciate about her writing, even if, this time around, I wanted things to speed up;)

As the story progresses, nothing is rushed between Theo and Laney, not only because of what they both experienced before forming this unlikely bond, but also because there’s a significant amount of nervousness and fear that comes along with taking friendship to another level, and even more so with Theo and Laney, because there are other factors determining where this relationship goes and the progress made between these two, one being  the fact that Theo and Laney are complete opposites, so figuring out how to mesh their two personalities is extremely important, and Stewart does an amazing job of bringing these two together in ways that fit their personalities and their connection.

Like always, Stewart creates amazing secondary characters whose roles contribute to Theo and Laney’s individual growth as well as together as friends and as more. Theo and Laney’s families and friends, especially Theo’s 3 older sisters and Laney’s mother and best friend add so much to the story line and offer insights and humorous moments throughout the story.

I’m a staunch supporter of the underdog – for those hidden gems who just haven’t quite reached their full potential, but then find out who they are, maybe with a little help of others, but mostly due to them figuring out their path and pushing themselves out of their comfort zones to the point that it becomes second nature to go after what they want, never feeling inferior or unworthy. And that’s the hero Kate Stewart creates for readers…that’s who Theo becomes…who he’s always been, but just needed a bit of a push to find his new normal.

The old adage that nice guys finish last does not ring true in The Guy on the Right; in fact, not only does Theo win Laney’s heart, but he also comes into his own the further into the story readers get and that growth is illustrated through his emerging self-confidence, his ability to go after what he wants, but also in his drive to not turn into a jerk that a lot of alpha males seem to become, which makes it so easy to cheer for this guy and want him to have everything he wants and deserves!

A Texas native, Kate Stewart lives in North Carolina with her husband, Nick, and her naughty beagle, Sadie. She pens messy, sexy, angst-filled contemporary romance as well as romantic comedy and erotic suspense because it’s what she loves as a reader. Kate is a lover of all things ’80s and ’90s, especially John Hughes films and rap. She dabbles a little in photography, can knit a simple stitch scarf for necessity, and on occasion, does very well at whiskey.
