My Review

Run or jump?

Even though this question didn’t replace the BOOM, it definitely goes with it because it was clear that December Mayson and Gareth Black were drawn to each other from the very moment they saw one another, but there were extenuating circumstances to their instant attraction and after some childish reactions and actions, it didn’t look like the BOOM was going to matter if they didn’t get their shit together and understand what was standing right in front of them.

But Ember and Gareth work things out and they both decide to jump, but now the next question is how far?!?!

December is probably the Mayson who I most relate to…she’s quiet, a bookworm, would rather hang back in the shadows, quirky – as much as she stays in her shell, but what’s also within her is the idea that the right guy could make this good girl a little or a lot bad in all the best ways. But it’s the maternal and loving side of December that really shines through in her and Gareth’s story. She provides Gareth’s two boys the stability and normalcy that they’ve never had because their mother is an absentee one. She shows both Max and Mitchell the love they deserve and she follows through for them, which is something they desperately craved.

Gareth is one hell of a father and man, and despite the baggage he carries and the many jobs he has, he makes sure his boys know how much he loves them and shows them how much better they make his life. He’s honest and open with them, and he tells it like it is in difficult situations, especially when it comes to his boys’ mother. It’s clear just how much these three guys needed December in their lives, and the fact that it works rather smoothly despite the bumpy start they had speaks volumes about the type of people December and Gareth are.

The Mayson clan is back in all its loud, overprotective, and devoted glory in Until December, and because I’m not new to this family, I’ve seen how tenacious, family-oriented, loving and protective each member is; they understand what’s important and they fight for it at all costs, even if that means putting themselves in uncomfortable or dangerous situations, which is exactly what Gareth is willing to do for his boys and for Ember.

I’ll never stop wanting to go back to Aurora Rose Reynolds’ #BOOM world because each and every story mixes the sweet with the sexy and develops from the onset of the BOOM to the happily ever after each couple ends up with after they figure out just how good they could be together.

“That’s the first time I’ve played that song. I like it. We should add it to our set,” he says, pulling the strap from around his neck before setting his guitar at the foot of his bed. “What do you think?”

He twists so our knees are touching and our shoulders are squared.

“I think you’re a showoff, one. And two…I totally think we should close with that at our gig. People love retro shit like that at shows.” I don’t really know what people like at shows because the only kinds I’ve ever been to have been for high school marching nerds or jazz geeks. I probably don’t even deserve to utter the word gig yet. I’m a gig virgin. I do know movies, though, and if this life was a movie, our band would close with that.

Jesse’s eyes linger on my face, making me warm.

“Okay then,” he says, finally. “And I’m not a showoff.”

His lips pucker with his smirk and mine follow suit until a laugh seeps through.

“You so are!” I shove at him playfully, and his hands wrap around my wrists and shove back gently but don’t let go.

“No, I’m a great example. That’s a totally different thing,” he says, pulling me toward his chest until my fingertips meet the hard surface of his pecs under a well-worn white T-shirt.

“I’m pretty sure it’s just a synonym for showoff how you’re using it. In fact, now you’re just being arrogant!” I gripe back through laughter, a wry smile playing at one side of my mouth. Jesse remains quiet, though. His head leaned a tick to the right. My lips vibrate with this sudden change in atmosphere, and without even helping myself, I bite my bottom lip. There is just enough light in the room to see these small things we’re doing, these…signs. At least, I’m giving a sign. I hope I’m not imagining Jesse’s.

At least three full breaths pass between us without words. I count mine, and I guess how many he takes because really, I can’t see much beyond the dark centers of his eyes and the top curl of his lip. I wait for him. Even though I’m dizzy and happy and excited, I don’t want to be eager and desperate. I wait for him to move closer…to do something.

I wish for him.

I’ve read almost all of Lila Rose’s books, but I can wholeheartedly say that I wasn’t prepared for what happens in her newest release, Out to Find Freedom, and the main reason is due to the horrific existence Emmie found herself in after the death of her father and the mistreatment and neglect from her stepmother.

Emmie is a strong, determined, and selfless heroine. Despite everything that happened to her at the hands of sadistic people who would do anything for money, she didn’t want anyone else to get hurt and she protected others by staying silent, by accepting her situation for what it was, and no matter how many scars or marks plagued her body, she endured because she had no other choice.

Warden is extremely intelligent and protective and those characteristics shine through when Emmie first begins communicating with him, and while I could have throttled him for steering clear of Emmie despite his attraction and feelings for her, I understood the position that he was in and why he saw things that way, but I’m glad he got out of his own head and went for it.

There was nothing normal about the way that Emmie and Warden met, but without that line of communication to the outside world, Emmie would not have survived, so while the circumstances surrounding their initial interactions are unusual and lead Warden to question his attraction to her and his feelings for her, it’s clear that what they share is special and unique and something that they both seem to need after everything they both went through to be able to see each other in person.

Julian, once again, shows why he can be as diva as he wants to be around these alpha bikers and their old ladies. He’s earned their trust, love, and respect in how he handles out of control situations, and he and Mattie are there for Emmie in the way only they can be. Julian may be loud, eccentric, and overly flirtatious, but his heart is huge and when somebody is in need of help, either with kind words, warm huggable arms, or a safe place to stay, he comes through every single time.

I’ll never tire of Lila Rose’s biker worlds; the Hawks are one of the first MC clubs I read when I started reading romance stories, which means they’ll stay with me always.

Review

This is Wild is a story of second chances…of addiction…of family, not just by blood…of necessary selfishness. It’s a story that doesn’t sugarcoat the hero’s struggle to stay clean and sober nor does it force a relationship between him and the heroine when it’s more than clear that he needs to make his sobriety a priority and think with his head, regardless of how messed up it may be, instead of anything else. It’s a difficult read at times because Natasha Madison allows readers to be privy to everything that Viktor has to overcome in order to get his career back in line as well as his life, and there are dark times with him due to the control that his addiction had on him for the last few years and the loneliness he feels as he works through his steps and does what needs to be done.

The progression of Viktor’s addiction illustrates how easily things can start as something recreational or as a way to unwind but then turn into something out of control without the person even understanding how it got so bad. Natasha Madison handled his addiction/struggle for recovery extremely well, showing the highs and lows and the ups and downs that come with trying to regain control over his life and his career after he almost ruined both. It’s not an easy process for him and I appreciate that fact; Madison could have easily moved Viktor through his steps with ease, but she doesn’t because that’s not a realistic portrayal of what occurs when battling something that took over one’s life

Zoe is a fantastic heroine; she’s definitely a fire cracker, especially around her girls, which includes her twin sister, but there’s also a softer side to her…a side that becomes an issue when she starts to develop feelings for a man who has too much to lose to simply give into his attraction to her. It would have been easy to just have Zoe and Viktor give into one another as soon as there was a clear chemistry between them, but that wouldn’t have felt right for what Viktor was going through.They both had to put themselves first, which broke both of their hearts, but it needed to be done for both their sakes.

The family aspect of the book is well done and it illustrates both the crazy things family does to each other as well as how much they have each other’s backs, no matter what. The team is also a family and the fact that Matthew gives Viktor a shot proves as much and it also is exactly what Viktor needed to keep moving forward and get back to playing the game he loves.

Even though it took me a bit to get into This is Wild, once I did, I was emotionally invested in these two characters’ lives and while I was impatient for Zoe and Viktor to find a way to be together while still keeping their individual identities and working through the necessary steps, I understood why it couldn’t easily happen and why they both needed to be completely sure it was something that they both could handle.

I can’t wait for the next book in the series!
