My Review

Every time I open up one of Emma Hart’s romantic comedies, I know I’m going to meet a snarky, stubborn, and outspoken heroine who more than gives those around her a run for their money, and I also prepare myself for the humorous, awkward, and out there situations that will have me cracking up at the characters’ antics and the trouble they seem to find themselves in due to either a more than tipsy quick decision or an encounter that sends them spiraling into self-created chaos.

Lauren is very much like Hart’s other feisty and intelligent heroines, but Lauren also has her own unique characteristics that are developed as her and Mason’s story continues. Her filter is non-existent, especially when she’s with her girlfriends, and there’s a fierceness to her that usually comes out when someone messes with her or those she loves.

I definitely think Lauren met her match with Mason because his quick wit and comebacks are on part with Lauren’s and that’s exactly what Lauren needs in her life – someone to put her in her place and set her straight when she gets a bit out of control/unhinged.

Lauren and Mason’s chemistry is there from their very first encounter and regardless of the fact that Mason agrees to a fake relationship with Lauren to appease his sister and mother, they fit into each other’s lives easily and have more in common than they ever thought possible.

Mason’s eccentric and hilarious relatives make fantastic secondary characters and they keep Mason and Lauren on their toes throughout the entire story, pushing them to give into what they’re feeling toward one another and make what started out as something fake more than a reality.

There are a lot of fake relationship romance stories out there, but because Emma Hart puts her own spin on the original story line by creating hilarious and relatable heroines, laugh out loud situations, and a set of secondary characters who add their own comical one-liners and have personalities that make them stand out in their own right, it’s easy to understand why so many readers call her the queen of the romcoms!

My Review

In Kendall Ryan’s The Two Week Arrangement, Dominic took Presley’s virginity and, unknowingly, her heart, and despite where their personal and professional relationships stand at the end of book one, she doesn’t know how to not feel what she feels for Dominic, which leaves every part of her life up in the air and the feelings that seemed to be developing between them at a standstill.

I have to admit, I didn’t know how to feel about Dominic throughout the course of Seven Nights of Sin. I mean…I understood his trust issues, not only due to the mother of his twins, but also due to what appears to be Presley’s duplicitous acts against his company. But what I struggled with when it came to Dominic is his hot/cold demeanor toward Presley, which actually feels, at times, like he’s leading her on but never plans to truly be with her in all the ways she wants and needs.

Presley’s words and actions in the second part of her and Dom’s story resonated her feelings for him and his two little girls and while she had her work cut out for her when it came to tearing down Dom’s walls and proving to him that he isn’t incapable of love and that she would be more than willingly to carry his baggage and accept his flaws as long as realizes that he’s more than capable of truly being in a relationship with her that matters and that has the possibility of forever.

The conclusion of Presley and Dom’s story frustrated me quite a bit, but it also illustrated the reality of what happens when a person is burned by someone who’s supposed to love him/her as well as what it takes for someone to finally let go of the past and move forward, truly being in the present with a love worth fighting for instead of giving up.

“Be ready by six,” Kyle says as he drops me off.

“Ready for what?” I ask, hand on the door handle ready to hop out of his SUV.

“Dinner.”

“Whoa.” I drop my hand from the door and turn to him. “Like you want me to have dinner on the table by six? That’s really sexist, Kyle. Just because you put an imaginary ring on it and put a bun in my oven doesn’t mean I’m going to quit my job and spend my days cleaning and putting dinner on the table every night at six like a 1950s housewife, just so you know. And I’m not ironing your shirts. I might make cookies every once in a while, though. If I stay. Which is still an if.”

“Are you done?”

“Yes.”

“Mrs Lascola comes daily Monday through Friday. She does the cleaning, shopping and laundry. My dry-cleaning is delivered to the concierge desk, from where she retrieves it and places it in my closet. She brings the mail from the lobby and leaves it on the desk in my study. She also prepares meals and leaves them in the fridge to be heated.”

Oh.

“So no,” Kyle continues, “I’m not expecting you to be my 1950s housewife, because Mrs Lascola is my 1950s housewife, minus your surly attitude problem. You, Daisy, are my twenty-first-century bride-to-be. What I expect from you is that you’re doing everything you need to do to take care of the baby you’re carrying. Besides that, I expect you to do whatever it is that you find personally fulfilling. I don’t give a fuck if it’s dusting, or knitting, or photography, or real estate, or running a goddamned empire. Are we clear?”

“Fine, yes.” I huff. “Good Lord, you’re dramatic.”

He rolls his eyes at me. “Great. Be ready at six, because I’m taking you out to dinner,” he says, stressing the word out. He could have done that to start with. “On a date,” he adds.

My Review

The dark, deadly, and dangerous book worlds that T.M. Frazier creates are some of my absolute favorites because those settings are just as important as the heroes and heroines who reside in them. Frazier’s main characters are very much products of their environment, which is why those places are characters in their own right, dictating the paths taken and the experiences endured. And, this is absolutely the case when it comes to the setting of Preppy, King, and Bear’s stories, and although Kevin, aka Nine, Clearwater’s life didn’t begin in the same location as his half-brother, the life that he’s led and the shit he’s had to endure makes him as much a part of their jacked up crew as anyone.

What I love most about Nine is the fact that he’s his own person, and while he most definitely has been shaped by his past and the abuse he received at the hands of people who were supposed to have his best interests in mind, he doesn’t allow their neglect or his circumstances to prevent him from moving forward, to actually living life instead of simply surviving it. And, although he has had many life changing experiences, one unexpected encounter shapes his life more than any other interaction, except maybe when he first introduces himself to Preppy and becomes a part of a family of misfits who would lie, cheat, and steal to protect their own, and while Nine is not as hardcore as Preppy, King, and Bear, he does what needs to be done and he uses his intelligence, his thoughtful demeanor, and his perseverance to pave his own way, and he’s allowed to do that in the ragtag crew who takes him in as he is with no other expectations but that he’s family.

Lenny is unique in her own right and the way Frazier reveals Lenny’s backstory is brilliant for reasons I can’t discuss because I don’t want to spoil any part of Nine and Lenny’s story, but just take my word for it…Lenny’s life hasn’t been easy and she continues to struggle with a litany of issues – one dominant one is her anxiety. Because of the life-changing events that have happened to Lenny, her anxiety is most definitely an albatross around her neck, and it’s one that refuses to release her. And while the reasons for her mental difficulties may not be relatable to a lot of readers, the fact that she struggles with something that so many of us struggle with as well makes her a character that readers can get behind and cheer on as she finds her place in life and hopefully love.

Nine and Lenny’s story is not as dark as previous plot lines in this world, and I appreciate that fact, not only because these two characters have their own personalities and backstories, but because regardless of the setting, diversifying characters is necessary, and while I understand that readers may have a set of expectations for certain series/authors/worlds, consistently creating similar characters and story lines seems to pigeon hole authors, so any time an author goes against the grain, moves beyond their already established characters/settings, I have a greater appreciation for that author and those new plots and characters.

I loved catching up with Frazier’s Logan Beach characters and being introduced to a handful of new ones; I adored being back there and I hope I never have to say goodbye to this world and these extraordinary heroes/heroines.

I look up into his dark eyes. “This is a dangerous game of cat and mouse we’re playing.”

“More like a game of cat and bird,” he corrects.

I straighten my posture, my nipples grazing his hard chest. “And we all know how that turns out in the end. The cat eats the bird.”

Nine lightly scrapes his nails over my bare arms before pressing them into my skin. I gasp at the slight bite of pain. “No, the pretty bird swoops down from nowhere and sinks her sharp talons into the cat, marking him for life.”

There’s no sarcasm in his voice. I don’t know how to begin to process what it is he’s saying. It takes all of my concentration to get out my next few words.

“And…and then what?”

Nine picks me up off the floor in one quick motion, flipping me back onto the bed. He crawls over my body, hovering above me, pinning my wrists to the mattress. He grazes his teeth over the sensitive spot behind my ear. He lowers his voice to a deliciously deep rumble that has me vibrating with his every word.

“And then he eats her.”
