My Review

I’m no stranger to S.M. Soto’s dark romances, so I was ready for the messed up situations and dark circumstances that the hero and heroine would have to face at the hands of potential enemies, sadistic bastards, and even one another.

The world that Percivale introduces Blossom to is not one she would ever choose to be a part of, but it’s one she now must try to venture through and to endure because she is forced to face situations that test her boundaries, test her strength, and test her trust in a man who was supposed to kill her and now can’t seem to let her go.

Blossom is innocent to the darker/harsher sides of life but that does not mean she’s weak. She definitely has a backbone; she challenges him and doesn’t back down and this is shown throughout the story. And, despite her breakdowns, which who wouldn’t have them based on the world she was thrust into, this is the kind of woman Percivale needs – one who can go toe-to-toe with him even if they are on opposite sides.

The man and killer that Percivale becomes seems fitting. What he endured as a child is something that cannot be forgotten, and it makes sense that it’s a driving force in shaping who he is. Revenge is what drives him at the beginning…it’s what pushes him…what feeds his darkened soul…what helps to stymie the fractures that have been a part of him since he watched the life leave those he loved

It’s necessary that they question their attraction to each other because their values, their views on life and how it’s supposed to be lived are on opposite sides. But ultimately, fighting their bodies’ need for one another gets to a point where it can no longer be denied, which means they’ll have no choice but to give into their need for each other. And regardless of their hot and cold interactions, the push and pull of their connection, and the fact that it is an extremely bad idea to give into their desire, they can’t give each other up even if Perc’s initial mission was to kill Blossom.

S.M. Soto clearly illustrates that Percivale and Blossom’s love is a cruel one. There’s nothing easy about the love they share, not only because of Percivale’s dark tastes and his chosen profession but also due to how different their lives  were before she found herself under Percivale’s command and, at times, protection. There are many things that Blossom will have to face in order to remain by Perc’s side, and while there were a few parts along the way, especially at the end, where I needed a bit more explanation and insight about Perc and Blossom’s words and actions, when the story ended, I felt good about where these two ended up and accepted the fact that their time apart was necessary for both of them to determine just what they wanted for themselves and from each other.

My Review

Unbroken is the perfect title for Crew Lawton and Della Deveaux’s story because both of them refuse to surrender regardless of how lost or lonely they seem to be, and while they clearly come from two different worlds, they teach each other how to find a balance, not only between their differing personalities but also when it comes to learning to live between the two worlds that exist, which by all means is easier said than done, but it also appears to be essential for these two stubborn souls to find a way to be together.

Despite the instantaneous attraction that exists between this cowboy and businesswoman, both of them have their own issues to sort out, and, in Della’s mind, her vision for her family’s company’s new ad campaign is not a reckless and carefree country dweller, and to be honest, Crew doesn’t see himself in the role either, but both of them are stuck with each other and have to do what needs to be down in order for Crew to payoff his gambling debt and Della to prove to herself and to her father that she has what it takes to run this company.

But what happens when these two let down their guard and take off their respective masks illustrates an inevitable connection – one that might just be worth risking it all, as long as Crew can clean up the mess he’s in and Della can find a way to prove just how capable of a business woman she is while also claiming something just for herself…the problem is…both Della and Crew need to get out of their own way in order for everything to work out.

Jay Crownover is one of my absolute favorite romance authors, so when I read that she was introducing readers to a brand new series with the release of Unbroken, I couldn’t wait to enter the new world she created and see exactly what Loveless, Texas, had in store for Crownover’s characters and her readers. And while not much time is spent in the small Texan town, the fact that we meet the Lawton siblings and gain insight into exactly who they are and what they stand for, I cannot wait for Justified.

Unbroken has a little bit of everything within its pages – there’s sexual tension, witty foreplay, internal diatribes, and a mix of suspense, drama, and realizations, which makes Crew and Della’s story a great way to introduce everything that Jay Crownover’s new series will deliver to readers in the upcoming releases.

“This the one, Ms. Priss?” I turned in a circle, hating how restrictive and stiff the refined suit felt. There would be no staying on the horse for eight seconds in something like this. I doubted I could even bend over and pull my boots on in this getup. I failed to see how being dressed like I was going to high tea with the queen was going to convince normal men with a little extra cash to buy the junk in my hair. It felt like overkill, but I would chew my tongue off before telling Della that. I knew how much this campaign meant to her, and I needed her to keep me around so I could get paid. .. and get to kiss her again.

Della circled around me, eyes scanning from head to toe. A small frown tugged her perfectly arched brows down into a V, and her lush, soft mouth pulled into a pout I was becoming achingly familiar with. She lifted a hand and touched the knot of the silk tie where it rested at the base of my throat. She fingered the delicate material and heaved a sigh.

“You look perfect, but something is still off.” She met my gaze with a scowl. “Can you try and look a little less like you’re being tortured? That might help the overall image.”

Her snippy tone and the upturn of her nose made me grin. I rolled my head around, causing my neck to pop and my shoulders to relax. Della’s expression softened when I was no longer standing at attention, but she still let out a dejected-sounding sigh and reached for my tie, releasing me from the expensive noose.

“You have a body made for designer clothes, but something is lost when you put them on. I feel like we’re trying to wrap the Mona Lisa in silk or something. Frankly, it’s annoying that you make denim and flannel look just as good as Versace and Prada.” Once she had the tie off, she told me to go ahead and get back into my own clothes. I asked her what the plan was for the shoot and a brief flare of panic and doubt lit up her catlike eyes. She forced a smile and told me she would figure it out.

Since I was totally a fish out of water in this scenario, all I could do was follow orders like a good soldier. I stripped out of the fitted vest and worked on the tiny buttons of the shirt. I was handing them both off to the flirty wardrobe girl who was enjoying the impromptu striptease when Della’s “Wait a second!” had both of us freezing on the spot.

She was looking at me in the mirror, eyes roving over my half-dressed form. She wandered over to where my jeans and boots were tossed in a haphazard pile on the floor. After a second of rooting around, she came toward me, my black wifebeater in one hand and my boots in the other.

“Put these on with the pants.” She looked at the wardrobe girl with a lifted brow and had to snap her fingers in the woman’s face to get her attention. “Go find me a pair of suspenders, leather if you have them.” The other woman scurried off to do as she was told and I dropped to the seat to pull on my boots.

“I keep trying to turn you into something better.” I looked up at Della as she snorted out a laugh. “But from the start, you were perfect the way you are.”

 My Review

As soon as I met Slate Solis in his sister Izzy’s story, Mess Me Up, I needed his story because I knew that there was so much more than just the protective brother who readers were introduced to and I couldn’t wait to see what Lani Lynn Vale had in store for this honorable alpha male. Then, when I realized who Vale was matching Slate up with, I couldn’t wait to see how he tried to tame the sassy and strong-willed Harleigh and also learn about both of their backstories in order to understand the people they are today.

Even though readers were privy to a bit of Slate’s past, I wanted as much insight as I could get for both him and Raleigh because it’s clear that these two are still dealing with some heavy issues and could use an ally, someone who they can confide in, and it appears that they could be that person for one another, even if they had a bit of a rocky start as more frenemies than anything else.

I’m always drawn to Lani Lynn Vale’s hero and heroine and the relationship that she constructs for them because not only do they seem to be polar opposites in a lot of ways, but there also seems to be a contrast of emotions that the main characters feel toward each other – a mix of lust, disdain, and curiosity – and these feelings seem to intensify as their story continues, and while it’s clear that the chemistry and sexual tension between them will win out in the end, watching everything play out between them is one crazy and entertaining journey.

The brotherhood among the members of the Bear Bottom Guardians club members is illustrated throughout the pages of F-Bomb, and their camaraderie as well as the fact that they have each other’s backs, always, is a defining characteristic of what makes this motorcycle club an amazing one to be a part of for those men who need a place where they truly belong.

There’s never a dull moment in any book that I read from Lani Lynn Vale. Each story is packed with humor, steam, wit, and suspense, and F-Bomb holds true to those story components and adds in originality due to who the main characters are and how they make things work between them.

My Review

I did a bit of research about how people view sloth as a deadly sin, and from what I found, sloth is the most difficult sin to define and to credit as a sin because of the array of connotative meanings that could be used to describe its various mental, spiritual, pathological and physical states. The term’s ambivalence is beyond intriguing because it’s completely on point when it comes to Rush Dempsey.

As much as Rush appears to not care about his place in the Elite, or the issues that his fellow Elite brothers have dealt with in their own stories/challenges, he’s never far from them and he definitely has more of an agenda and an interest in the society he was forced to become a part of regardless of how disinterested he appears to be. Giana Darling allows readers to truly understand who Rush is; there’s a dichotomy to Rush that Darling meticulously illustrates, and through the insights we receive, the guy who always remained on the outskirts, more as an observer than anything else, is so much more than anyone would think he is, and it’s the revelations of who he is and what part he’s playing in everything that helped things to fall into place. With Rush becoming the dark alpha hero of Sloth, readers learn what he’s been up to while all of his brothers deal with their own shit, and when we garner a better understanding of who he is and what he stands for, things get even more interesting because, especially when it comes to what he’s been tasked to do and to whom he’s supposed to dirty up in any and all ways possible.

Just like Rush is not who he seems to be to the public eye, Isabelle Savoie is not the pure and innocent young women she’s portrayed as, as the daughter of Archbishop Savoie, and that fact makes a lot of sense given what goes on in what’s supposed to be a house of God. In a way, Rush is responsible for stripping Isabelle of the virtuous mask she wears, and with the shedding of that facade, she becomes the passionate and strong woman she’s always meant to be, which makes her Rush’s perfect partner, even if they have quite opposite personalities.

The fact that Isabelle finds comfort in Rush’s darkness surprised me, but then again, if she’s anything like him, who she pretends/portrays herself to be is not who she is at her core, but it’s up to her to reveal who she truly is and what makes her able to endure the hellish events of her past and her present until Rush became her darkened savior.

The world of the Elite continues to leave readers with more questions than answers, which means that heading into the final book, there’s still a significant amount of information to dispense, and I hope that by the time everything is revealed, that it’s clear why these seven alpha males took on their roles and exactly how they plan to use their newfound position of power. The dismantling of this corrupt society started in book one and it’s slowly become a beast of its own accord, and while all of the new recruits are taking it upon themselves to expose the reprehensible acts and misdeeds of this society, where it leaves them in the end is still unclear, and I’m sure it’s going to be one hell of a wild ride to come to some sort of resolution for everyone involved.

The society members who are going out will bring forth a candidate that the society votes on and approves.

After they are chosen, the initiates are given a token and an invitation to initiation. The initiation will be a test to their character and ability to do what’s right for the betterment of the society. Once the initiates pass their test, they are discreetly branded with the mark of the society and are groomed through challenges during the course of their elite education to breed them into the influential people they were meant to be.

Once in The Elite Seven, there is no getting out. The money and power are their rewards. Should they choose to stray or break the rules, the society strips them of everything. Anything they once had will be removed. Opportunities will never arise. They will no longer have the support of the society. To this day, there have been no known occurrences of anyone from the society having to be banished. This elite group of people is what every young man and woman aspire to be a part of. While the group is a secret society, they are whispered about amongst the privileged folks in the country. Anyone who is anyone knows of the group and secretly hopes it’s their son or daughter who is selected, for good fortune is showered on the family for decades to come.
