It all started with a sexy selfie.

Texted to the wrong number.

Not my finest moment—but I have nothing to be ashamed of.

It was a stupid dare from a girl I’d met online, but since she’d given me a fake number, I didn’t feel bad that my interests were suddenly focused elsewhere—on the fiery and sharp-tongued, Peyton that I found myself sparring with over text for the rest of the evening.

The following day, my case of mistaken identity came back to bite me in the banana.

When I strolled into the office, I was introduced to Peyton as the new client I needed to win over. The Peyton, in case you’re not tracking.

And let’s just say she had my full attention.

Brains? Check.

Beauty? Oh yeah.

And the best part? She hated me on sight.

Dear God, do I love a challenge.

My Review

I love when the attraction between two people is established by something other than their looks, and while Peyton Richards may have been drawn to Josh Hanson due to a sexy selfie gone wrong and a fake phone number, the quick witted text exchange that they share creates a connection unlike one either has experienced and one that just might be worth the risk…that is until they find out that their soon-to-be professional relationship makes anything personal between them not exactly forbidden but quite ill-advised.

Thus begins a partnership full of complications due to a bevy of sexual tension, a more than apparent electric connection, and a professional line that both Peyton and Josh can’t help but want to cross, even if it’s less than ideal given their professional commitments.

Who would have thought that a sexy selfie gone wrong and a fake phone number would lead Josh Hanson and Peyton Richards down a complicated path – one full of sexual tension, an electric connection, and a professional partnership that just turned their personal lives upside down. 

It’s interesting to watch Josh and Peyton figure out what they want and what they’re willing to risk in order to take their shot at love. I’m glad that Kendall Ryan allows readers to be privy to both the hero and the heroine’s internal musings because it offers a full picture of what’s at stake, both personally and professionally, for them and for those who rely on them. Both of them have good heads on their shoulders and understand what it means to sacrifice for their career, but they also deserve a personal life and the fact that they are drawn to each other so intensely provides them with enough desire to perhaps find a way to make both parts of their lives flow seamlessly together in a way that benefits them in all ways possible.

Kendall Ryan, once again, weaves a bit of drama, a large dose of humor, and quite a bit of steam together to create an enjoyable romantic comedy – one that includes a group of dynamic supporting characters, especially a certain meddling grandma who is as endearing as she is frustrating, at least from her granddaughter’s perspective. The way Josh and Peyton first meet and their attempts to remain professional illustrate why it was always going to be more than business between them and the way Ryan crafts the story in that direction will have readers laughing and swooning a number of times through Junk Mail.

Poor judgment: knowing better yet doing it anyway.

Flint Stone is a professional in every way.

My Review

Readers met Camryn Presley and Flint Stone, the hero and heroine in Lord Have Mercy, in Hissy Fit, the first book in Lani Lynn Vale’s latest series, The Southern Gentleman, and we could tell after one interaction that these two were either going to bite each other’s heads off or tear one another’s clothes off in order to work through the frustration and anger that consumes them when it comes to the other one. And while there’s still some animosity at the beginning of their own story, as it progresses, Lani Lynn Vale provides the necessary insight in order to see that it was never hatred that these two felt towards each other but a simmering lust and need that they couldn’t quite grasp because they were too used to giving each other shit and driving one another crazy.

Camryn’s a great heroine – one whose quirks, fears, and sass make her relatable to all readers. Her internal musings are definitely on point when it comes to the issues and emotions that she deals with regularly, and while she does tend to say and act without completely thinking things through, it’s almost like her truths are spoken when she doesn’t overthink and overanalyze every detail.

Flint comes off as a hardass in a lot of ways, but he’s also a good guy who loves helping kids and loves his job. Camryn is definitely a game changer for him, which is probably why he stayed away and acted put off by her words and her actions towards him. Maybe he wasn’t ready to feel everything that she would make him feel, but with only one kiss, there’s a clarity that both of them want to hold onto, and despite quite a few roadblocks and struggles that they have to deal with, they stand strong as partners and remain steadfast in their love for each other.

I will say that Flint’s ex, Nivea, is a point of contention for me. She’s a nasty, self-absorbed woman who acts more like a high school ‘mean girl’ than the teacher she is, and the fact that Flint hooked up with her because he couldn’t have the woman he wanted, which was Camryn, didn’t sit too well with me, especially with how quickly he went all-in with Camryn after ending things with Nivea who just so happens to be Camryn’s nemesis.

I wouldn’t really call Lord Have Mercy an enemies-to-lovers’ story because I don’t think Camryn and Flint truly hated one another; in fact, they seemed to desperately want each other and that’s what makes things between them complicated and tenuous until they hash out why they rubbed each other the wrong way and realized their angsty banter was more foreplay than anything else.

Lord Have Mercy is another great read from Lani Lynn Vale; its story line and characters develop and progress in a way that makes the novel entertaining, a bit suspenseful, and just as steamy as the rest.
