My Review

As an English teacher and as an avid reader, I am a lover of words…of lyrically written sentences and paragraphs…of multifaceted and layered plot lines…of fleshed out characters who grow and evolve as the story continues. Words are my job and my passion, so when I find a writer like L.J. Shen – one whose skillful storytelling and flawed characters never fail to overwhelm me in all the best ways – I know I need to step outside my comfort zone and dive into The Kiss Thief, allowing Shen’s angsty goodness and love triangle plot line to invade my literary world, and while this story definitely put me through the ringer and made my anxiety spike during numerous scenes in the book, it only confirms just how amazing Shen’s writing is and the care she takes to allow her characters to tell their story, regardless of how confusing, frustrating, and overwhelming it is for the writer and her readers.

The Kiss Thief – the title of Wolfe and Francesca’s story – is quite deceiving – because its implications don’t seem to match the world that Shen creates for her characters. When I think of someone stealing kisses, I don’t traditionally see it as a deviant act; stolen kisses could happen for any number of reasons, and they can be both pleasant and unpleasant surprises depending on the kisser. But I’ve never seen these kinds of kisses as vindictive…as a part of a duplicitous plan…as a strategic act meant to achieve something bigger.

And there’s no way I could have imagined the symbolic nature or significance of the title of Shen’s newest release. Because the kissing thieves who Shen created are anything but innocent; in fact, they’re all about taking what they want when they want it, and it’s that controlling nature that makes them dangerous and unrelenting and sends Francesca Rossi’s world spiraling out of control and most definitely out of her hands.

But that’s not to say that Francesca is not a force to be reckoned with – she is stronger and more resilient than those around her give her credit for and although there are times where she seems too docile, too innocent, and too malleable, she proves herself as so much more than a pawn in a dangerous game…as more than a tool to acquire revenge…as a girl to be used in any way someone else deems necessary. She’s a fierce heroine – one who grows as the story continues and does both unexpected and amazing things to prove exactly the kind of person she is.

Senator Wolfe Keaton is someone who is not easy to figure out because how he carries himself outwardly doesn’t completely define who this complex man is, and while there’s certainly an edge to him that clearly conveys the idea that he is not a man to be messed with, that doesn’t even begin to show the layers of his personality or why control is something he demands at all costs. LJ Shen allows readers to truly see all that Senator Wolfe keeps to himself and because readers are privy to his perspective and the reasons behind his words and his actions, they can understand, unlike those around him, the significant ways he transforms as his relationship with Francesca becomes something neither of them expected.

The Kiss Thief doesn’t follow a conventional story line – there are so many twists and turns that keep readers guessing and also force them to truly be on their game when it comes to the ins and outs of the plot and its characters. The Kiss Thief is a story of revenge…a story about enemies turned allies…of foes who become friends and perhaps even more.

The push and pull and back and forth between the characters…the way their worlds collide despite efforts to prevent it…the angsty goodness…the childish antics due to jealousy…all of it captivated me from page one until the end and Wolfe and Francesca story is one that I won’t soon forget, which is exactly the kind of book that makes me fall in love with writing and storytelling all over again.

“Are you sure you’re on my card?” I turned to the man with a polite yet distant smile. I was still disoriented from the exchange with Angelo when the stranger pulled me against his hard body and pressed a possessive hand lower than socially acceptable on my back, a second from groping my butt.

“Answer me,” I hissed.

“My bid on your card was the highest,” he replied dryly.

“The bids are undisclosed. You don’t know how much other people have paid,” I kept my lips pursed to keep myself from yelling.

“I know it’s nowhere near the realm of what this dance is worth.”

Un-freaking-believable.

We began to waltz around the room as other couples were not only spinning and mingling but also stealing envious glances at us. Naked, raw ogles that told me that whomever the blonde he’d come to the masquerade with was, she wasn’t his wife. And that I might have been all the rage in The Outfit, but the rude man was in high demand, too.

I was stiff and cold in his arms, but he didn’t seem to notice—or mind. He knew how to waltz better than most men, but he was technical, and lacked warmth and Angelo’s playfulness.

“Nemesis.” He took me by surprise, his rapacious gaze stripping me bare. “Distributing glee and dealing misery. Seems at odds with the submissive girl who entertained Bishop and his horsey wife at the table.”

I choked on my own saliva. Did he just call the governor’s wife horsey? And me submissive? I looked away, ignoring the addictive scent of his cologne, and the way his marble body felt against mine.

“Nemesis is my spirit animal. She was the one to lure Narcissus to a pool where he saw his own reflection and died of vanity. Pride is a terrible illness.” I flashed him a taunting smirk.

“Some of us could use catching it.” He bared his straight white teeth.

“Arrogance is a disease. Compassion is the cure. Most gods didn’t like Nemesis, but that’s because she had a backbone.”

“Do you?” He arched a dark eyebrow.

“Do I…?” I blinked, the courteous grin on my face crumpling. He was even ruder when we were alone.

“Have a backbone,” he provided. He stared at me so boldly and intimately, it felt like he breathed fire into my soul. I wanted to step out of his touch and jump into a pool full of ice.

“Of course, I do,” I responded, my spine stiffening. “What’s with the manners? Were you raised by wild coyotes?”

“Give me an example,” he said, ignoring my quip. I was beginning to draw away from him, but he jerked me back into his arms. The glitzy ballroom distorted into a backdrop, and even though I was starting to notice that the man behind the demi-mask was unusually beautiful, the ugliness of his behavior was the only thing that stood out.

I am a warrior and a lady…and a sane person who can deal with this horrid man.

“I really like Angelo Bandini.” I dropped my voice, slicing my gaze from his eyes and toward the table where Angelo’s family had been seated. My father was sitting a few seats away, staring at us coldly, surrounded by Made Men who chatted away.

“And see, in my family, we have a tradition dating back ten generations. Prior to her wedding, a Rossi bride is to open a wooden chest—carved and made by a witch who lived in my ancestors’ Italian village—and read three notes written to her by the last Rossi girl to marry. It’s kind of a good luck charm mixed with a talisman and a bit of fortunetelling. I stole the chest tonight and opened one of the notes, all so I could rush fate. It said that tonight I was going to be kissed by the love of my life, and well…” I drew my lower lip into my mouth and sucked it, peering under my eyelashes at Angelo’s empty seat. The man stared at me stoically, as though I was a foreign film he couldn’t understand. “I’m going to kiss him tonight.”

“That’s your backbone?”

“When I have an ambition, I go for it.”

A conceited frown crinkled his mask, as if to say I was a complete and utter moron. I looked him straight in the eye. My father taught me that the best way to deal with men like him was to confront, not run. Because, this man? He’d chase.

My Review

Lachlan Mount is still my favorite Meghan March alpha, anti-hero, but let me tell you, Jericho Forge has definitely made a persuasive case for himself in book one, Deal with the Devil, in March’s newest series the Forge Trilogy!

Man is Jericho Forge a force to be reckoned; he’s calculating, ruthless, and absolutely stone cold, but what intrigues me the most about him is his ability to read people and use that knowledge to get what he wants, and as soon as he meets India Baptiste, she becomes his next conquest…a trophy to add to his mantel…one heck of a sexy and sultry means to an end…at least that’s what he keeps telling himself.

Jericho and India are playing a high stakes game where winner takes all, but as their story continues to be told, it’s clear that Jericho’s initial thoughts about India’s usefulness and his claim that she’s nothing more than an artifact to collect or a possession to be owned don’t quite mesh with how India makes him feel or his acknowledgment that she’s more dangerous to him than he originally thought.

There are a multitude of ways that Jericho Forge exudes attributes of the devil himself. He’s devilishly handsome, nefarious in his actions, and diabolical in his quest for revenge. Every move he makes has been meticulously evaluated for its benefits and he never acts without understanding the potential risks, but it’s also clear that there’s not much he won’t do to get what and who he wants, and he seems to have claimed India Baptiste in more ways than one.

India’s a woman who has forged her own path and refuses to be beholden to anyone; she’s fiercely independent and determine to fix her problems herself. But it’s obvious that she’s in way over her head when it comes to her current situation because she has no choice but to rely on a man she doesn’t trust and one who is hellbent on exacting whatever justice he deems fit for his enemies and maybe even for the woman who has a bigger hold on him than anyone ever has.

Jericho Forge may be a bastard who uses untoward methods to get what and who he wants, but he’s not the only one who India must contend with, and by the time I finished Deal with the Devil, I definitely saw Jericho as the lesser of two evils, even after what’s revealed to India at the end of book one.

God help anyone who messes with this devil because Jericho Forge is ready to do anything and everything, even if that means unleashing hell on earth and letting his Kraken loose;)

It was the gorgeous guy I’d seen in the elevator. And here I thought we’d had a little spark.

Bennett Fox grinned like he’d already been named my boss and extended his hand. “Welcome to Foster Burnett.”

Ugh. He wasn’t just good looking; he knew it, too.

“That would be Foster, Burnett and Wren, as of a few weeks ago, right?” I iced my subtle reminder that this was now our place of employment with a smile, suddenly thankful my parents had made me wear braces until I was nearly sixteen.

“Of course.” My new nemesis smiled just as brightly. Apparently his parents had sprung for orthodontic care, too.

Bennett Fox was also tall. I once read an article that said the aver-age height of a man in the US was five-foot-nine-and-a-half inches; less than fifteen percent of men stood taller than six feet. Yet the average height of more than sixty-eight percent of Fortune 500 CEOs was over six feet. Subconsciously, we related size to power in more ways than just brawn.

Andrew was six foot two. I’d guess this guy was about the same.

Bennett pulled out the guest chair next to him. “Please, have a seat.”

Tall and with gentlemanly manners. I disliked him already.

During the ensuing twenty-minute pep talk given by Jonas Stern—in which he attempted to convince us we weren’t vying for the same position, but instead forging the way as leaders of the now-largest ad agency in the United States—I stole glances at Bennett Fox.

Shoes: definitely expensive. Conservative, oxford in style, but with a modern edge of topstitching. Ferragamo would be my guess. Big feet, too.

Suit: dark navy, tailored to fit his tall, broad frame. The kind of understated luxury that said he had money, but didn’t need to flaunt it to impress you.

He had one long leg casually crossed over the other knee, as if we were discussing the weather rather than being told everything we’d worked twelve hours a day, six days a week for was suddenly at risk of being in vain.

At one point, Jonas had said something we both agreed with, and we looked at each other, nodding. Given the opportunity for a closer inspection, my eyes roamed his handsome face. Strong jaw, daringly straight, perfect nose—the type of bone structure passed down from generation to generation that was better and more useful than any monetary inheritance. But his eyes were the showstopper: a deep, penetrating green that popped from his smooth, tanned skin. Those were currently staring right at me.

I looked away, returning my attention to Jonas. “So what happens at the end of the ninety-day integration period? Will there be two Creative Directors of West Coast Market-ing?”

Jonas looked back and forth between us and sighed. “No. But no one is going to lose his or her job. I was just about to tell Bennett the news. Rob Gatts announced he’ll be retiring in a few months. So there will be a position opening up for a creative director to replace him.”

I had no idea what that meant. But apparently Bennett did.

“So one of us gets shipped off to Dallas to replace Rob in the southwest region?” he asked.

Jonas’s face told me Bennett wouldn’t be happy about the prospect of heading to Texas. “Yes.”

All three of us let that sink in for a moment. The possibility of having to relocate to Texas shifted my mind back into gear, though.

“Who will make the decision?” I asked. “Because obviously you’ve been working with Bennett…”

Jonas shook his head and waved off what I was beginning to ques-tion. “Decisions like this—where two senior management positions are being merged into one of-fice—the board will oversee and make the final determination of who gets first pick.”

Bennett was just as confused as me. “The board members don’t work with us on a daily basis.”

“No, they don’t. So they’ve come up with a method of making their decision.”

“Which is?”

“It’ll be based on three major client pitches. You’ll both come up with campaigns on your own and present them. The clients will pick which they like best.”

Bennett looked rattled for the first time. His perfect composure and self-assuredness took a hit as he leaned forward and raked long fingers through his hair.

“You’ve got to be kidding me. More than ten years, and my job here comes down to a few pitches? I’ve landed half-a-billion dollars of ad accounts for this compa-ny.”

“I’m sorry, Bennett. I really am. But one of the conditions of the Wren merger was that due consideration be given to the Wren employees in positions that might be eliminated because of duplicity. The deal almost didn’t go through because Mrs. Wren was so in-sistent that she not sell her husband’s company, only to have the new organization strip away all of Wren’s hard-working employees.”

That made me smile. Mr. Wren was taking care of his employees even after he was gone.

“I’m up for the challenge.” I looked at Bennett, who was clearly pissed off. “May the best woman win.”

He scowled. “You mean man.”

My Review

Lila Monroe brings together the San Fransisco food truck community and the reality television craze in her latest story, You’ve Got Male, book 2 in her Chick Flick Club series. And in true Lila Monroe romantic comedy fashion, Zoey Rafferty and Cam Newsome know exactly how to get underneath each other’s skin as business adversaries but also how to heat one another up with flirtatious exchanges, sultry looks, and even some too close for comfort encounters that make readers question whether Zoey and Cam can keep their professional and personal lives separate when the rivalry gets even hotter and their exchanges lead to some interesting discoveries.

Zoey and Cam’s antics prove just how competitive the food truck industry is and illustrate why neither of them can play things safe…can allow another food truck to outdo them…can be afraid to do whatever it takes to get ahead and for all of these reasons, these two will either wind up going for broke alone or perhaps work together in order to remain doing what they love and being successful doing it.

Boy do Zoey and Cam push each other’s buttons, and while Cam seems to be more educated on the finer points of sabotage and nefarious acts, Zoey’s passion for cooking and her desire to succeed makes her a quick study, and soon, she’s giving as good as she gets but she’s also realizing that her growing feelings for Cam aren’t just ones of detestation or annoyance.

I can’t help but smile and reminisce about some of my favorite romantic comedies when I enter Lila Monroe’s Chick Flick Club series; the way she puts her own spin on well-known movies and brings the swoon, the laughter, and the steam that these films are known for into her comedically crafted world allows readers to lose themselves in Monroe’s stories just like they do in the movies.
