My Review

To the public and to his fans, Jonas Ryder has the life most people dream of…so why has he lost his passion for music? Why has he become a recluse? And, more importantly, why does he run from anything that resembles a commitment?

Since meeting the Ryder brothers, Jonas has always been the one I could never figure out; he seemed so closed off and jaded, and I wanted to understand what made him that way, what made him leave music behind, what made him feel like more was not something he wanted in his life, whether it be more than one-night with a woman, more gigs with his brothers, or more notoriety. These aspects of ‘more’ were not something he would consider even if Jonas’ friend said it best, ‘There’s always more to it, Jonas. You’re just good at ignoring the rest.”

Hadley Stark thought she knew what she was getting herself into when she hooked up with Jonas ‘One-Time’ Ryder, but somewhere along the way, perhaps when she became more than a one night stand or when she began to help him work on his inability to play music, she found herself wanting more with Jonas and for Jonas, complicating an already complex personal and professional relationship and forcing them both to contemplate if they can give each other what they want and more importantly what they need.

While it took me a bit to warm up to Jonas, I love how J.D. Hawkins approached Jonas’ issues and the way he forced Jonas to reflect on the truths and insights that his friends and his brothers finally laid out for him. Jonas is not the typical rockstar and I loved that about him, and even though he seems like a superficial person based on how he has chosen to live his life, when Jonas finally looks inward and finally faces what he has refused to see, that awareness allows him to move forward and to finally hope for more.

I absolutely adored Hadley; she gives so much of herself to her clients and to her friends, helping them to become the best version of themselves. I enjoyed reading about her letting loose a bit while also taking a few steps back when it becomes clear that her version of ‘more’ doesn’t match up with the guy who owns her even more than she realizes.

The whole concept of the Ryder Brothers’ series intrigued me. I didn’t know how it would work with three different authors each writing a book about one of the brothers, but they did so seamlessly and the fact that all three brothers were in each book moving, the plot of the individual books as well as the storyline of the entire series forward intertwining Close, Want, and More in ways that I never would have imagined but that I  loved nonetheless.

Hadley has something about her. Something beyond that daytime fantasy-inducing body and those cinematic eyes. So maybe it’s not just lust that’s made her dance around my thoughts for months now—it’s not like I’m short of women willing to fulfill those kinds of wants. Perhaps some part of me knows Hadley could be good for me, in more ways than one.

I watch her a while longer, feeling the calm energy that her presence seems to bring. Just looking at her is enough. Then, as she finishes her juice and moves away from the group to put the empty glass on a table, I turn to the bartender and instruct him on what to mix up for me.

A Pirate’s Booty. Once again.

The place is louder now, as people pass around the baby clothes and toys, conversation splitting off into a dozen smaller, more intense ones. I take the drink and move through the guests, smiling as a few of them call hellos, and eventually reach my target.

“Third time’s the charm?” I say, once I’m close.

She spins around and looks startled for a second. Her eyes going from mine, to the drink, and back to mine again before she tilts her head and casts that warm sunbeam of a smile at me.

“I appreciate it, but I’m not drinking tonight. Driving.”

I push the drink a little closer to her.

“I’m sure there’s a kind gentleman somewhere around here who’s willing to take you home.”

She laughs gently, then bites her lip in a gesture so sexy it could be its own porn category. A moment of hesitation, the indecision written all over her expressive face—but I know she’ll give in.

“You know what? I’ll take you up on that,” she says, side-eyeing me coquettishly as she takes the drink and sips. I savor it, the way she raises her chin, the slenderness of her neck. God, she’s incredible.

“Good?”

“Very good,” she says, her smile a little wider now, a little more subtextual.

About the Author

For as long as I can remember I’ve always had a deep-seated love for reading and writing. It pretty much started with my mom, she was a big reader way back when. One day I stumbled upon a box of V.C. Andrews books, and it was pretty much all history from there. I was probably only in the fifth or sixth grade when I actually started reading her books, and I fell completely in love. The characters, the plots, and the complexity of her stories were intriguing, and I often found myself rushing to read the next novel in the long line of her books.

I found myself drawn to any kind of romances and as I got older, I had a new found love for erotic romance, and dark romances (call me sick or twisted but its the truth).

As for writing, when I was younger I would write short stories or fan-fiction on some of my favorite books – You know, things I wanted to see more of, or how I wished a certain story would end.

I guess that’s where it all sort of began for me. After the birth of my son I just started putting my ideas down on paper and creating these stories, and characters. It was essentially my turn to put them through these trials, and see how they weathered whatever storm they were given. I’m a hopeless romantic at heart, most of the books I read and write are in the romance genre.

My Review

In all honesty, I was extremely nervous to read the last book of Grim and Emma Jean’s story. I was afraid that I wouldn’t get the answers I so desperately needed to unravel the WTF moments that I had already experienced in the first two books, and I truly couldn’t see how these two characters would find their way back to each other…back to the one place they had always belonged, regardless of oaths, bonds, and rivalries. I was left in a state of such upheaval at the conclusion of Possession that I didn’t know if I could experience the maelstrom of emotions that were bound to plague me as I reentered this deadly and messed up world.

But despite my trepidation what I did know was that I needed to take this dark and dangerous journey with Grim and Tricks, and I needed to trust that T.M. Frazier would give her characters and her readers everything they wanted and needed to know, even if the path we all had to endure was a fragmented mess of death, deception, and destruction.

Since the beginning of the series, nothing has been easy for Grim and Tricks and that idea holds steady in Permission; in fact, everything seems even more grueling and twisted than it’s been, and I didn’t think that was possible given the shitstorm they’ve already had to endure. The war between Los Muertos and Bedlam continues to rage on, adding more fuel to the fire as loyalties are questioned as well as challenged. No one seems safe from acts of revenge or hatred and as things become even more fractured, there’s a chance that people who mean everything to the hero and the heroine might not make it through the battle that’s been waged.

The complexity of T.M. Frazier’s characters is always something that intrigues me every time I read one of her stories/series. Frazier has a way of turning the ideas of good and evil on their heads, proving that these two types of people and acts are not mutually exclusive and that a good person can do bad things and a bad person can do good things. Life, especially in the kind of environments that Frazier builds, is never black and white; there’s always a gray area – one that allows for interpretation – and Frazier crafts her settings in that realm – a place where nothing is cut and dry…where right and wrong aren’t necessarily a factor or at least in the way that society views them.

I thought that after T.M. Frazier introduced me to the King, it would be impossible for any of her other heroes to take that crown from him, but Grim almost did the impossible and while I can’t say that Grim usurped King, I can say that they might just need to share the title in their own kingdoms;)

Grim’s expression softens. “Let me make you feel good. Let me erase some of the hurt.” He pulls me against him for a searing kiss that makes me want nothing more than for him to be inside of me. Injuries be damned.

His lips release me all too quickly. The gentle night breeze licks across my wet mouth, cooling my lips.

Grim continues to my neck, sucking behind my ear.

I dig my fingernails into his back as he trails his talented tongue down my shoulder then across my chest until he’s staring at my naked breasts. “Perfect, beautiful tits,” he whispers with such awe it almost sounds like a prayer.

It’s amazing how much drama, romance, and suspense J. Kenner can pack into a novella. There’s definitely no downtime for her characters or her readers because the story moves quickly, exposing truths and exploring Cayden and Gracie’s growing connection.

Cayden and Gracie’s story is a quick read – one that has a bit of everything when it comes to the main characteristics of a romance and one that utilizes its setting to not only showcase everything that Austin has to offer but also uses its various locations to amp up the tension and deliver a sultry and seductive environment for everything that goes down in Pretty Little Player!
