Best Selling Author Kindle Alexander is an innovative writer, and a genre-crosser who writes classic fantasy, romance, suspense, and erotica in both the male/male and male/female genres. It’s always a surprise to see what’s coming next!

I live in the suburbs of Dallas where it’s true, the only thing bigger than an over active imagination, may be women’s hair!

Usually, I try for funny. Humor is a major part of my life – I love to laugh, and it seems to be the thing I do in most situations – regardless of the situation, but jokes are a tricky deal… I don’t want to offend anyone and jokes tend to offend. So instead I’m going to tell you about Kindle.

I tragically lost my sixteen year old daughter to a drunk driver. She had just been at home, it was early in the night and I heard the accident happen. I’ll never forget that moment. The sirens were immediate and something inside me just knew. I left my house, drove straight to the accident on nothing more than instinct. I got to be there when my little girl died – weirdly, I consider that a true gift from above. She didn’t have to be alone.

That time in my life was terrible. It’s everything you think it would be times about a billion. I love that kid. I loved being her mother and I loved watching her grow into this incredibly beautiful person, both inside and out. She was such a gift to me. To have it all ripped away so suddenly broke me.

Her name was Kindle. Honest to goodness – it was her name and she died a few weeks before Amazon released their brand new Kindle ereader. She had no idea it was coming out and she would have finally gotten her name on something! Try finding a ruler with the name Kindle on it.. It never happened.

Through the course of that crippling event I was lucky enough to begin to write with a dear friend in the fan fiction world of Facebook. She got me through those dark days with her unwavering support and friendship. There wasn’t a time she wasn’t there for me. Sometimes together and sometimes by myself, we built a world where Kindle lives and stands for peace, love and harmony. It’s its own kind of support group. I know without question I wouldn’t be here today without her.

My Review

I’m a huge fan of Nashoda Rose’s Tear Asunder series as well as her Unyielding series. There’s just something about Rose’s no bullshit alpha males and how they claim and protect those they love, refusing to allow anything to touch them and fighting like hell for payback if anything does. Every single one of her heroes are broken in some way, but they’ve learned to channel the rage and torment that consumes them making bad men pay and working to be better men for the women who own them, body and soul.

As soon as I was introduced to Deaglan Kane, I knew that Rose would take her time exposing his layers and revealing exactly why he is the man he is – one who doesn’t get attached…one who is only with a woman once…one who’s built such an impenetrable wall around his past and his heart that no one has the knowledge or the strength to try to knock it down. But I also knew that once he found the woman who would make him go against all of his rules that he would do anything to experience her rarity…her stubbornness…her resilience…her love.

But even though I rationally knew that Deaglan’s past dictates much of his present, meaning that there was a reason for his callousness, his actions in the story’s initial scene still DID NOT sit well with me, especially given how it was such a significant step for Eva to put herself out there like she did, so the fact that his actions made her feel like garbage make me unimpressed with the man who was meant to be the hero of Irish Crown.

I really liked Eva from the start, and it made sense that she would pick someone the exact opposite of her abusive ex to finally take a chance on, and even though his response after their time together left her feeling discarded and used, the impression that they left on each other made it seem like their connection wasn’t over, and as the story continues that idea solidifies and what started between Eva and Deaglan grows into something Deaglan never knew he wanted but now knows he’s unwilling to live without, but what that means for his secrets and the dangerous life that he lives is still a point of contention, especially when his past and his present intersect, meaning that how Deaglan proceeds will either cost him Eva or potentially his life.

Irish Crown fits perfectly into the type of storytelling and character development that readers have come to expect from Nashoda Rose, and I loved catching up with some of my favorite characters from her other two series. And I’m happy to say that by the time Deaglon finally shares his whole story with Eva and with readers, I clearly understood why he was the man that he was and why his feelings for Eva, at first, scared him but after made him determined to set things right with her, switching his focus to what mattered most – protecting and keeping Eva and turning the boy and man he was into one who deserved the rarity that Eva is.

COVER REVEAL: THE SECRET TO DATING YOUR BEST FRIEND’S SISTER by Meghan Quinn

How do you date your best friend’s sister? Easy.

Step one: Pretend you want her to set you up with someone else. That will bring the two of you closer.

Step two: Go on date with lots of random women, proceed to get stupid drunk and talk about your best friend’s sister, thus gaining the courage to finally make a move.

Step three: Randomly show up at her apartment and confess your love. Women love that, right?

It all seemed so simple. A fool-proof three step process that will guarantee the love of you life to fall madly in love with you.

At least–that’s what I thought was going to happen. But my attempts to win over Julia Westin backfired in more ways than I can count. The thing about Julia? She’s smart–really smart–and her wicked gaze cuts through all the charm I’ve tried slinging her way. She’s not interested in games, my gifts, or my stories. She might want me too; but she’s not giving in that easy…

BLOG TOUR REVIEW AND EXCERPT: ONLY LOVE by Melanie Harlow

Heartfelt, beautiful and sexy!”

Lauren Blakely, #1 New York Times bestselling author

Only Love, an all-new sexy standalone romance from USA Today bestselling author Melanie Harlow is available now!

Only Love AMAZON.jpg

A gorgeous former Marine with a tortured soul.

The beautiful, compassionate therapist living next door.

A meddlesome grandma determined to get them together.

I was expecting a proposal on my birthday, and I got dumped instead.

How could I have been so clueless?

Grams knew exactly how to distract me.

The “cute boy next door” who’s been helping her with yard work clearly needs a little therapy. Who better to call than her newly single therapist granddaughter?

She even fakes dementia to get me to visit, and now that I’m here she’s doing everything in her power to throw us together.

Not that I’m complaining. Ryan is the sexiest man I’ve ever met–I mean the full package, from the chiseled jaw to the massive shoulders to the rippling abs. (And yes, his package is full, and he knows exactly how to deliver it.) He makes me want to get out of my head and follow my heart. He makes me want to take chances I never thought I’d take.

He also makes me want to take my clothes off. A lot.

But he’s moody and challenging–one minute he’s an open book, and the next he’s completely closed off. He holds me like he’ll never let go, but insists he wants to be alone.

Some wounds are so deep, only love can heal them.

How can I convince him to let me try?

My Review

I’m a firm believer that ‘love heals all things,’ but that doesn’t mean that the journey will be easy or that it will be a quick process, especially when it comes to two people whose hearts and minds have been deeply wounded and the last thing they’re looking for is the only thing that will make them whole.

There’s just something about a wounded hero…it could be the fact that underneath his tortured soul and his standoffish demeanor is a man who desperately wants to heal and move forward but hasn’t quite figured out how to do that and isn’t quite ready to allow someone new into his life, even if that person might be the very person he needs.

Ryan Woods is a wounded warrior…a veteran who is plagued with a multitude of scars due to his time in the service, and while some of them can clearly be seen, the mental wounds – the ones that fester beneath the surface are the ones that Ryan must address, but until he’s ready and able to ask for help…to put himself in a position to lay himself bare, the only person who can help him win this battle is himself, which is an extremely difficult task because fending off personal demons and working to not succumb to the darkness, to the nightmares, and to the constant reminders of what he’s been through is usually beyond one’s individual means.

Although Stella Devine is not a wounded solider, there are parts of her heart and her mind that need to be healed and if Stella’s meddling grandmother has anything to say about it, Stella and Ryan are going to experience the healing powers of love together and with the sizzling connection that seems to exist between these two as soon as they meet, I don’t doubt that with a little help from gram, a whole lot of patience, and quite a bit of faith that Stella and Ryan will find a way to help each other mend their broken pieces, giving them a reason to believe in the healing powers of love.

Even though there is a bit of an instlove feel to Only Love, as Stella and Ryan explore what’s between them, learn about each other’s pasts, and work to mend some of their festering wounds, readers watch the couple’s bond solidify, and it gives us hope that these two lonely souls can find solace and peace in one another’s arms and that their love will heal all things and allow them to, once again, fight for what they want and for what they need, leaving the past where it belongs and focusing on what matters most – the present and a possible future together.

Only Love is an heartfelt story about two people finding the courage to let down their walls, work through their pain, and realize that sometimes all it takes to heal is a strong connection and a bit of meddling from someone who simply wants the people around her to be find their happy.

“Ryan?”

Startled, I turned around to find Stella standing a few feet away on the grass, wearing a T-shirt and pajama pants, arms crossed over her chest. Her feet were bare, and her hair was loose around her shoulders and a little messy, like she’d already been asleep. Thinking about her in bed did things to my insides. “Hey. Did I wake you?”

“I was awake. My windows are open, and I heard something and thought I saw you through the window. What are you doing?”

“Uh, building you a swing. But it was supposed to be a surprise.” Now that she’d caught me at it, I was kind of embarrassed. What if she thought this was stupid?

“You built me a swing?” She came a little closer, and I realized she might not be able to see it in the dark. The moon was only a sliver tonight.

“Yeah.” I grabbed one of the ropes. “Right here.”

She stared at it. “Why?”

“I’m not entirely sure.”

Her eyes met mine, and my heart pumped harder.

“Want to try it?” I asked.

“Like right now?”

I moved behind it and held both ropes steady. “Come sit.”

She hesitated, and I thought maybe she was going to tell me to quit being weird and go home before she called the cops, but after a few silent seconds, she came toward me. Turned around. Lowered herself to the seat and closed her fingers around the ropes.

“Well?” I asked. “How does it feel? Like you’re a kid again?”

“This was very kind of you, but not necessary.” Her tone was stiffer than her posture.

“Stella.”

She didn’t answer.

“I’m sorry.”

“About what?”

“Last night.”

“You’re sorry about what we did?”

“I think I’m more sorry about what we didn’t do.”

Her head turned sharply, and she looked at me over one shoulder. “You sure know how to confuse a girl.”

“One of my many talents.”

She looked straight ahead again. “Tell me about some other ones. And give me a push.”

I smiled, even though she couldn’t see it, and gave her a little nudge. “I’m fast.”

“Oh really?”

“Yeah.” I gave her a little harder push.

“Track team in high school?”

“Tried. Didn’t take.”

“Why not?”

“They expected me to show up for practice.”

“Ah.” She straightened her legs and leaned back in the swing, her hair dangling behind her. “Tell me another one.”

I gave her another push. “I’m good with my hands.”

Her laugh floated back to me. “I have observed this about you already. Give me another one.”

I pushed her again, just so I could feel her hair brush against my hands. “I’m not afraid of anything.”

“No? Nothing?”

“Nothing I can think of.”

“Hmm.”

“Are you analyzing me now?”

“Kind of. I mean, you can’t say something like that to a therapist and expect her not to reflect on it a little bit, right?”

“And?”

“And what?”

“Do you think I’m a liar or a fool?”

“Neither,” she answered. “I think you mean what you say. I think you only lie when you have to, and even then, you hate it. And if I dug a little deeper—which I won’t, because my sisters have told me it’s annoying and intrusive—I think I might discover that it’s because above all, you value your honor. Your word.”

For a moment, I was too stunned to think or move or speak. Then I said, “I take it back.”

“Take what back?”

“What I said. That I’m not afraid of anything.”

“Oh? And what are you afraid of?”

She swung back toward me and I caught her around the waist. Put my lips to her ear. “Your ability to read my mind.”

Beneath my arms I could feel her chest expand and contract faster. “I’m sorry, Ryan. I know I shouldn’t say those—”

“Come home with me,” I said, my voice raw with something like thirst. I pressed my lips to her throat and breathed in her scent. I let one hand move toward her breast. I waited for an elbow to the ribcage, a cry for help, a slap across the face. Because if she could read my mind right now, she’d know exactly what I wanted to do to her—and it was a long, detailed list.

“Yes,” she whispered. “Yes.”

Excerpt

“I am done, Bria,” he says, his bloodshot eyes sealed on mine, his voice cracking. He raises a hand exposing the inside of his palm as I gawk at the fine and long lines carving it. “I have to give you something. Here is my bleeding heart. It has ceased beating in my chest, Bria. It’s yours and always has been. Mend it or smash it!”

His words and torn expression snap something inside me, but before I sink to the floor, he grabs me and scoops me into his lap. Tears run down his pain-distorted face, and I can’t take it any longer. I join him, and we weep in earnest for what feels like an eternity. Then, with my head resting on his chest and his arms wrapped around me, we sit here on the floor, an entangled mess of broken hearts and bodies and sad sounds.

I feel a strong urge to caress him, but I halt my attempt to comfort him. Maybe I am completely mad because I’ve always felt this aching need to be there for him, to ease his pain. I can’t rein in myself even after everything that’s happened. He’s the one I can never turn away from, my other half. I feel truly possessed and under the spell and power of something that, although it feels foreign and distant, is still strong enough to make me surrender my all to him. I am far from caring or cringe he will hurt me anymore. I’ve been on the receiving end for a long time now, and it has never deterred me from trying to mollify his pain. Yes, I suppose he might show some sort of disturbed rejection and hurl cruel words my way, but, as always, I will take it for what it is—his particular coping mechanism.

“How can you even touch me?”

I freeze with my hand midway in the air because the last time we were together, he said he despised and loathed me, so, of course, he will not like my caress. Likely sensing my turmoil, he clasps my hand in his and trails kisses down my wrist. His gesture has something reverent in it, and the moisture he leaves on my hand mesmerizes me. I can’t seem to peel my eyes away.

“Bria, how can you wish to touch and comfort me? How can you caress the same person who caused you the most pain? Comfort the one person who’s not at all worthy of it? How can you touch the same person who said those horrible things to you back then, terrible lies out of the mouth of a complete sinner?”

I just stare at him in disbelief, and a fine line spreads on his forehead. Maybe I’m already dead and haven’t noticed it. Perhaps I took too many aspirin with too much wine. I look at the aspirin foil. It is intact. My body trembles with Damien’s closeness, but my mind is far away. He snatches the packet from my hand, and his brows snaps together.

“What the fuck are these, Bria? What are these pills?” He shakes me, but I still can’t utter any words. “Answer me, Bria, or I’ll force you to retch! Do you really enjoy making me lose my damn mind? I am on the brink of my sanity here, and you are not helping.”

The force of his voice rattles the walls. Is he for real? I manage to find a few words. “It’s aspirin. I have a headache,” I lie.

“Stop deceiving me, Bria. It kills me how easily you can lie while looking me straight in my face.”

He clenches my upper arms, and I tilt my head up.

“When did it become so effortless for you, my sweet baby? Can you remember the day I told you I wanted to corrupt your innocence but hoped it would still be there shining in your hazel eyes? What have I done?”

About BEST LAID PLANS

That time I had the brilliant idea to ask my good friend for lessons in sex-ploration…

Awkward? Maybe. But how else is a good girl going to find out if she likes being naughty? I might be sweet as cherry pie, but I’m also bold and damn curious. And Gabe is charming, trustworthy, aces at seduction (or so I hear) and—bonus!— willing to give me lessons. But to guarantee it won’t ruin our friendship, I have some specific requirements for his instruction. I want these classes to be hypothetical more than hands-on. So what if he’s hella sexy? I can handle that, no problem.

***

I have it bad for Arden. She’s bright, brilliant, insanely fun, and I want to take her home and spend all night together—and then spend the day with her, too. When she asks for my help, I see my chance to win her sweet heart by showing her how much fun we can have getting spicy. Trouble is, she has a different idea of what “sex-ploration” should mean. Now I’m going to have to get really clever to win her over.

Good thing I know exactly how to upend her best laid plans.

BOOK TOUR REVIEW: Good Gone Bad by Giana Darling

Title: Good Gone Bad
Series: The Fallen Men Series #3
Author: Giana Darling
Genre: Erotic Romance
Release: November 23, 2018

They say one action doesn’t define you.

I killed a man. Stabbed him in the neck and licked the blood off my lips after I did it.

Still, one action doesn’t define you.

I could have called anyone. My father, the Prez of The Fallen MC, our family lawyer, my best friend, Lila, or my brother, King.

I didn’t.

Instead, I called Lionel Danner, the police officer renowned for taking down the Nightstalkers MC. The man who had been my father’s arch nemesis for decades. The man who hated everything I stood for. A man who had disappeared from my life without explanation three years ago.

I called him.

And maybe one action doesn’t define you, but killing a bad man and calling in the good changed my life and it sure as hell changed his.

The third book in the Fallen Men Series. A standalone featuring Harleigh Rose and Officer Lionel Danner.

In the corrupt, unlawful, and deviant world in which Harleigh Rose Garro and Lionel ‘Lion’ Danner live, good vs. bad and right vs. wrong are not mutually exclusive concepts, and regardless of how drastically opposite these terms appear to be, they’re not as black and white as they may seem; life isn’t that cut and dry, and there’s no clear way to separate oneself in a way that allows them to be completely pure or completely unclean, so it’s unfair to categorize HR as a sinner and Danner as a saint because these two characters straddle both sides of the law, creating tarnished crowns, tattered wings, and a torn moral compass. But if people were to truly be judged by the sum of their parts – both the good and the bad…the right and the wrong, Harleigh and Danner’s courage and conviction as well as their sense of honor, duty, and family would solidify exactly where they belong – next to each other.

I don’t think I can adequately convey just how much I LOVED Good Gone Bad or how in awe I am of the way that Giana Darling crafted their story. It’s beyond clear that Harleigh and Danner required their whole story to be told, sugarcoating nothing that happened and laying themselves bare when it came to their feelings for each other, the choices that they made, and the actions that they took that redefined everything about who they were, what they stood for, and what they meant to those around them.

And because of the candid insight readers receive, we are forced to understand just how brutally beautiful Harleigh and Danner’s love for one another and Harleigh’s love for her family is while also acknowledging the fact that sometimes bad things have to be done by and for good people in order to have a fighting chance at living the life they were meant to live with the people they were meant to have by their side.

There is no easy path to redemption nor is justice something that can be universally obtained…all anyone can hope is to have someone at their back who understands exactly what they’re made of and why, despite knowing better, certain choices are made and actions are taken – ones that they wouldn’t change regardless of the risk…regardless of the cost because what matters is the endgame and getting to that point is all about survival and there are no ground rules when it comes to keeping loved ones alive and well.

I absolutely adored Danner’s little rebel and Harleigh’s lion and despite the hell that they had to endure in order to get to a place where nothing mattered but how they felt for one another, in the end, all the recklessness…all the irrational acts and choices…all the hurt…all the grief…all the scars got them to a place where they were not just a bad girl and a good guy…not just a warrior princess and a badass cop…not just a Garro and a Danner, but they were EVERYTHING that each other desperately wanted and needed and, in my opinion, exactly what they deserved.

4.5 Poison Apples

My Review

Even though Cobi Mayson’s BOOM happens at a rather unorthodox location, it’s more than clear that he’s found his girl, which means that Hadley Emerson is in for quite the courting because anyone who knows about these Mayson boys understands what happens to them when they claim their woman and nothing and no one will stand in their way…not even the woman herself.

Cobi definitely epitomizes Reynolds alpha male personality; he’s a badass police officer who is all about protecting and serving, and while his growly, over protective and possessive demeanor may be a turn off for some women, there’s not a single thing about Cobi that doesn’t appeal to Hadley, even if she’s caught a bit off guard by his ability to be wherever she is in her time of need, knowing exactly what to say and do to make sure she’s taken care of, and slowly but surely, Cobi’s patience pays off and Hadley gives him exactly what he wants and needs – her.

But that doesn’t mean it’s smooth sailing for Cobi and Hadley; in fact, their professions, police officer and social worker respectively, come with constant threats and dangerous situations, so these two are going to have to be constantly on guard, making sure that they’re both protected and working to ensure that everything that’s building between them has every opportunity to last forever.

I’ve been a huge fan of the ‘BOOM’ ever since Aurora Rose Reynolds introduced readers to the concept in her 2013 release, Until November, and I continue to enjoy every single Until book that I’ve read, which is actually a pretty big deal for me as a romance reader because I don’t usually ‘buy’ into the whole insta-love/insta-lust dynamics, but the way that Reynolds’ crafts her stories allows me to feel the pull her heroes and heroines feel and there’s just something about her feisty female leads and her alpha males that keep me anxiously anticipating the next BOOM!

4.5 Poison Apples

CHAPTER 3

SCREW  YOU,  AWESOME KISSER

RUBY

I eat an entire Listerine PocketPak on the subway ride home to kill any lingering germs in my mouth from Awesome Kisser. I’m annoyed by the whole thing, but at least he apologized and seemed sincere about the acci- dental tongue invasion. Too bad the hotness of the mem- ory is marred by raging Brittany and the hack in the face.

After getting home, I rinse with mouthwash, down six vitamin C capsules and some anti-flu holistic stuff, and then I go ahead and make myself my customary before- bed, pre-audition nighttime drink of hot honey-lemon water, and pray I’ve done a good enough job of ridding myself of cough germs.

I climb into bed, note my sheets lack a fresh scent, question when I last washed them, then I set my alarm and close my eyes. Behind my lids appears the hottie— whose name is apparently Banny, or maybe I misheard and it’s Danny. It’s not really a hot guy name. I’m going to stick with Awesome Kisser.

Now that I’m past the shock-and-awe factor I can fully appreciate that man’s hotness in the shouty caps sense of the word. It’s unfortunate he dates vapid, self-absorbed model-y types and not starving artists. I have a feeling “date” isn’t the appropriate word anyway. It’s also unfor- tunate that he has poor coughing manners.

I consider that he was likely a guest at the engagement party and he very well may be a guest at the wedding as well. If I’m still dateless by then he could make an ex- cellent potential dance partner, depending of course on how tight he is with Armstrong. If they’re close friends I don’t think it’s advisable to get involved in any semi- unclothed dancing outside of the wedding celebrations, no matter how hot he is. I don’t want to run the risk of encountering him again should things not go as well as one hopes.

Eventually I stop fantasizing about what’s under his suit and pass out.

I’m about to find out exactly what’s in Awesome Kiss- er’s designer pants when a repetitive, annoying sound dis- tracts me. I pause just before I smooth a hand over the amazingly prominent bulge while he tilts my head back, his soft lips brushing mine, his hot tongue sweeping . . .

The wisps of the dream fade and I crack a lid. The fantasy breaks with the obnoxious sunlight screaming its wake-up call, along with my stupid phone. Sometimes I’m slutty in my dreams.

I reach for the phone, remembering that Amie prom- ised me a morning call, just in case I messed up my alarm, which has happened in the past. I was on the ball last night, though. I set three alarms, all within five min- utes of each other so I wouldn’t have an opportunity to fall back asleep.

“Rise and shine, Ruby! I’m your wake-up call!” How she manages to sound so damn chipper at seven-thirty in the morning after her engagement party is beyond me.

A seal-like bark comes out when I attempt to grum- ble hello and tell her off for interrupting my dream.

“Ruby? Are you there?”

I make a second attempt at speaking but all I manage is another bark.

“Do you have a bad connection? I told you not to go with the cheap provider. You know how terrible the re- ception is.”

I clear my throat and immediately regret it, as it feels like knives are traveling up my esophagus.

“Ruby?” Amie asks again and then sighs. “I’m hang- ing up and trying again.”

Once the line goes dead I immediately hit the video call. Amie picks up right away. She’s wearing a white robe with her wavy hair pulled up into a ponytail, look- ing as fresh as baked bread out of the oven. I on the other hand, look like yesterday’s garbage based on the small image in the corner of my phone.

“Oh my God. Are you okay?”

I motion to my throat and shake my head. I give speak- ing another shot, just in case my inability to make more than random, audible sounds is a result of waking up. I usually don’t have to use words until after my morning coffee. All I get is another one of those squeaky moans and more sharp pain in my throat.

Amie sucks in a gasp and slaps her hand over her mouth. “You have no voice!”

I nod.

“How are you going to audition?”

The final dregs of sleep slip away. I mouth oh God. A mime is the only part I can audition for with no voice, or one of the dancer roles with no lines. They don’t make nearly as much money as central, or even secondary character, roles—which is what I’m hoping to score. The pay scale for that is far higher than for a lineless role. It definitely won’t cover the basics, like rent and food, let alone the minimum payments on my credit card. I’ve been banking on this audition to get me out of the hole I’ve dug for myself over the past few weeks.

The phone conversation is pointless since Amie can’t read lips and I can’t respond. She tells me she’s coming over. I try to tell her not to bother, but again, with the lack of words it’s impossible to convey. I wait until she hangs up and text her to tell her it’s not necessary. Besides, this thing I have is clearly contagious since I must’ve gotten it from Awesome Kisser, and I don’t want to pass it on to her. Damn Awesome Kisser—ruining the already ques- tionable state of my life.

I roll out of bed, the full-body ache hitting me with the movement. I must be dying. And I’m not just being dramatic. Every cell in my body hurts. I drag myself to the kitchen and fill the kettle. Maybe a lemon-honey hot water toddy will help restore my voice. Based on my re- cent unlucky streak, I have my doubts.

I shuffle to the bathroom, turn on the shower, and root around in the medicine cabinet for some decent drugs. All I have is regular-strength Tylenol, so it’ll have to do. I climb into the shower without checking the temperature first—it takes forever to heat up and then fluctuates be- tween lukewarm and scalding. I step under the spray during a scalding phase and huddle in the corner until it’s bearable.

I’d like to say the shower helps me feel better. It does not. The warm water also does little to help my voice. Although I’m past just squeaking to barely audible one- word phrases, such as “ow.” I’m praying to the voice-miracle gods that the honey-lemon combo will further improve my ability to speak.

Once out of the shower I doctor up my water, adding extra lemon and honey. Not only do I burn the crap out of my tongue, it feels like serrated blades coated in acid sliding down my throat. Still, I get dressed in basic black tights and a black tank with a loose, gauzy gray shirt over top. I dry my hair and put on makeup in hopes that ap- pearing put together will make it so. I have to double up on powder when the effort to prepare my face causes me to sweat.

I take a second hot lemon-honey toddy with me on the subway and arrive for my audition half an hour early. Not that my promptness matters. I’m still unable to speak above a whisper. My despair balloons like a marshmal- low in the microwave at the mass of people performing voice warm-up exercises around me.

I make an attempt to do the same, but the hoarse, croaklike sound is drowned out by the crystal clear voice of the perfectly gorgeous woman standing next to me. As I listen to the sound of a thousand soaring angels spew out of her mouth, I shiver with what I fear is the begin- ning of a fever. Sweat breaks out across the back of my neck and travels down my spine, along with a violent shiver. As if today could be any worse than it already is, my stomach does this weird, knotting thing.

“Ruby Scott.”

I glance at the director, who’s thankfully still looking fresh, and not beaten down by hundreds of craptastic au- ditions. Those are yet to come. I shoulder my bag and follow him to the theater.

“You’re auditioning for the role of Emma today, cor- rect?” He doesn’t give me a chance to confirm. “I’d like you to start with the song at the beginning of act two.”

“Okay,” I croak feebly, cringing at the raspy sound. At least I can speak, even if I sound like a prepubescent boy with his nuts caught in his zipper.

The director looks up from his clipboard, his frown an omen.

“I seem to have lost my voice.” He has to strain to hear me.

He heaves a frustrated sigh. “You can’t audition if you don’t have a voice.”

“I didn’t want to miss it. Maybe I could audition for a dancer part?” Fewer words are better.

He purses his lips. “Auditions for dancer roles aren’t until later in the week.”

“I understand, but I’m here and if you can’t hear me sing, at least you could see me dance?” I fight the gag reflex as another wave of nausea hits me.

He sighs and relents, gesturing to the stage. I thank him, then drop my bag at the edge of the stage and get into first position. My brain is foggy and my body aches horribly, but I can’t pass up this opportunity for a mod- est, yet steady income for a few months. I can’t afford to rack up additional credit card debt, and I don’t want to ask my father for more money, because that will make him aware of how much of a struggle this is. Then he’ll make his case for me to come work for him, as is his mas- ter plan. I know I can do this.

The music cues up, and as I start to move my stom- ach does that rolling-heave thing again. There isn’t any food in it, but all of a sudden the honey-lemon water I consumed this morning decides to stage a revolt. I’m in the middle of a spin—not the best idea when nauseous— and the next wave hits me; violent and unrelenting.

I attempt to keep my mouth closed, but the intensity of the spasm forces it open. I spray the stage with partially digested honey-lemon water, and what appears to be last night’s shrimp tarts and mushroom canapé appe- tizer dinner—in an Exorcist-like dramatic flair.

And thus ends my audition.

Review

Unpredictable…that’s what I’ve always loved about Helena Hunting’s characters and the situations she places them in…there’s just something about Hunting’s off-kilter humor and her ability to revel in the untoward that makes her stories unbelievably entertaining and a pleasure to read, and with the way that her newest release, Shacking Up, begins, readers won’t be able to read fast enough in order to see what happens after the hero and heroine’s not so stellar first encounter!

Readers will definitely be able to relate to Ruby Scott’s unlucky streak and her need to do things on her own, regardless of her family’s money and social standing. I think that’s what endeared me to Ruby from the start of the story – she didn’t want to be the “pampered rich bitch”…she wouldn’t sacrifice her creativity or her dignity regardless of how much easier it would be to go back home to her father’s company and resolve to live in the world she was raised in – a world she can no longer stand. Her Broadway dreams are her guiding light, which means there’s no place in her life for the snobbery of her upper class family because they see her endeavors as futile and unbecoming of a woman in her societal position.

After 7 years of playing professional rugby, Bancroft Mills aka “Awesome Kisser” is forced to take his rightful place in his father’s company, and even if it’s a position he reluctantly agrees to, he has no other choice. But like Ruby, Bancroft doesn’t act like the world owes him anything just because of the family he was born into, and while it might be because he worked his ass off to accomplish his goals as a professional athlete, he knows the kind of dedication and hard work required to be successful, which is exactly what he plans to be in his new role…as much as his father will let him.

Ruby and Bancroft’s “relationship” evolves quickly after their first interaction, and while it’s definitely an unconventional situation they find themselves in…what they’ve worked out allows them to feel settled and to get to know one another on a level they never would have had the opportunity to experience if they wouldn’t have agreed to their “business” transaction.

Shacking Up is definitely a slow burn romance due to a number of factors, but Helena Hunting’s build up clearly illustrates that the chemistry between Ruby and Bancroft as well as their developing feelings for one another are headed in the right direction, so when they finally have a chance to experience each other, the foundation they built leading up to anything sexual makes it that much more amazing and worthwhile.

I definitely enjoyed Ruby and Bancroft’s story and I loved Ruby’s rating scale for Bancroft and how he gained/lost points based on his comments and actions…I did find some of Ruby’s internal monologues a bit excessive, but I also understood why there were so many of them due to the nature of her relationship with Bancroft for 5 weeks. I guess I’m just used to Helena Hunting’s writing as an indie author, and because Shacking Up is traditionally published, some of the feel of the book didn’t quite resonate with me because I was looking for more of Hunting’s colorful dialogue and off the cuff situations. Regardless of a few issues, though, I loved Hunting’s characterization of both Ruby and Bancroft and their aversion to high society and all of its fakery, and I am looking forward to more characters from this world.

My Review

Duke Wilder is a small town country stud while Valentina is a big city girl through and through, and while that difference shouldn’t be an insurmountable obstacle, the reason that Valentina enters Duke’s life and their first less than stellar interaction, at least in Valentina’s mind, proves to be quite the hook-up deterrent, despite the sexual tension and attraction that sizzles whenever they’re in the same room.

Duke and Valentina couldn’t be more opposite in almost every aspect of their lives, but here’s the thing, they’re both judged on their outward personality and actions and if anyone looked beneath their facades and delved a little deeper, they would see that there’s a lot more to both of these characters and it’s that Duke and that Valentina that act on the spark between them and risk being laid bare in significant ways – ones that deal with more than the physical connection they seem to share.

Neither Duke nor Valentina thought that their temporary fascination…their temporary desire for another would remain, so they never considered that their fling would make things difficult once Valentina helped fix the distillery’s legal troubles, but that’s exactly what happens, which means that tough decisions need to be made and heartbreak may be in store for one or both of them.

Hunky Heartbreaker is the perfect story for new readers to be introduced to Kendall Ryan’s hilarious and smexy storytelling as well as her charming and smooth talking characters. And while there is a bit of an instal-love aspect to Duke and Valentina’s story, I feel like it’s more of an insta-lust situation because Valentina is considerably unimpressed when she first meets Duke and gives him shit for his behavior even if she does want to rip his clothes off at the same time. There’s fantastic sparring between these two characters and despite their many differences, they know exactly how to handle each other, both in and outside of the bedroom, which makes for quite the interesting scenes and interactions.

I really hope Kendall Ryan takes her readers back to visit the Wilders sometime soon because I feel like there are more stories to tell and I’d love to catch up with the Wilder twins and their significant others.

Excerpt

“Good morning, darlin’. Could I interest you in some breakfast sausage?”

The woman turned, her long, dark curls swinging around her shoulders. A look of disgust quickly washed over her face as her eyes locked on my bulge.

Ay dios mio, you’ve got to be f#cking kidding me,” she muttered, immediately taking her briefcase from the counter and marching to the front door, her red-bottomed heels clacking loudly on the hardwood.

“What’s the matter?” I asked, stumbling after her.

“Last time I do a favor for a friend,” she said under her breath, slamming the front door shut behind her.

Favor. Friend. Beautiful woman in a pencil skirt. Charlotte’s hotshot lawyer friend from Los Angeles.

Oh f#ck.

“Hey, uh, Valencia, wait up!”

I burst through the door to find her paused on the top step of the porch. She turned sharply to look me dead on, the fire in her eyes enough to burn me straight through.

“It’s Valentina,” she spat, crossing her arms and cocking her hip to the side.

“Valentina, right. My mistake. Listen, I’m really sorry about all this. We were out late last night for—”

“For the opening, I know. I was supposed to be there, but something came up at work. So instead, I got my ass onto a last-minute redeye to make it in time for our meeting this morning, but clearly you had other things in mind,” she said, her eyes flitting to my quickly-softening cock before turning again to leave.

“No, please, don’t go. This is completely unprofessional, I know—”

“That’s the understatement of the century.”

“But I promise, if you give me a chance, we can turn this meeting around.”

“Is it still a meeting when one person shows up with his dick out?”

“Oh, trust me, sweetheart, if my dick was out, you’d know it.”

“Sure, as long as I brought a magnifying glass with me.”

I paused, standing up a little straighter. She squared her shoulders, and our eyes locked, the tension between us thick enough to cut with a knife.

If we were going to make this work, I knew I had to be the one to budge. But dammit if this woman didn’t make me want to blow my lid.

“Look, I’m sorry. Please stay. If not for me, then for Luke and Charlotte.”

Valentina sighed and put a hand on her hip.

“Fine. Put some goddamn pants on first, and then we’ll talk.”
