My Review

Every time I open a Tessa Bailey romance, I know I’m in for a wild and dirty ride, in all sorts of deliciously decadent and maybe even dangerous ways, and in Bailey’s newest release, Runaway Girl, Bailey’s heroine, Naomi Clemons, is in personal crisis mode, wondering who exactly she is and who she’ll be if she goes through with her ‘big day’ and what Naomi realizes is that she needs to find her own identity before she can give herself to someone else.

There’s so much more to Naomi, beneath the surface, than readers realize, and while some readers may have preconceived notions about her due to her ‘runaway bride’ antics, there’s a depth to this prim and proper former beauty queen, and as Naomi grows into herself and figures out what she wants and needs out of life, we witness a woman of great strength as well as one with so much love to give to those she cares about that readers can’t help but admire and adore her, especially when she and Jason finally give into what’s been brewing between them.

Special Forces diver Jason Bristow is a Tessa Bailey alpha male, through and through, and just like many of her other heroes, Jason’s protective nature and his need to give his little sister everything he can is what forces him to make some interesting choices, which is how a certain runaway bride enters his and his sister’s lives.

The sexual tension and instant chemistry between Naomi and Jason sizzles from the pages, and as they get to know one another better, as well as learn who they are themselves and what they’re made of, their flirty banter and teasing ways turn into so much more than either of them thought possible.

I throughly enjoyed witnessing Naomi and Jason’s growth throughout the course of the story and they definitely burned up the pages of the story, proving that no one can resist a dirty talking alpha. But I have to say, for me, Birdie was quite the scene stealer. I adored her and how she reacted to things and what she brought out of her brother and Naomi.

A need for help and self discovery becomes something essential for both Naomi and Jason and instead of running away or avoiding, they run towards each other and the life that’s waiting for them to reach out and grab it.

Author Bio
Tessa Bailey is originally from Carlsbad, California. The day after high school graduation, she packed her yearbook, ripped jeans and laptop, driving cross-country to New York City in under four days.

Her most valuable life experiences were learned thereafter while waitressing at K-Dees, a Manhattan pub owned by her uncle. Inside those four walls, she met her husband, best friend and discovered the magic of classic rock, managing to put herself through Kingsborough Community College and the English program at Pace University at the same time. Several stunted attempts to enter the work force as a journalist followed, but romance writing continued to demand her attention.

She now lives in Long Island, New York with her husband of ten years and six-year-old daughter. Although she is severely sleep-deprived, she is incredibly happy to be living her dream of writing about people falling in love.

It’s so easy being best friends with a gorgeous, talented, charming guy.

Said no woman ever. Except me.

My friendship with Miller is a sure thing — he’s my plus one, my emergency contact, and my shoulder to lean on. He’s also been by my side helping me raise one helluva awesome kid who’s the center of my world.

Nothing will change our easy breezy friendship. Until I have the bright idea to convince him to start a new band with me.

Trouble is, our sizzling chemistry in the recording studio is getting harder to ignore, no matter how risky it might be.

Sing sexy songs with the woman you’ve been lusting after? Get up close and personal as you croon to the woman you’ve wanted for years?

Piece of cake.
NOT.

Performing with the sweet, sassy and insanely wonderful Ally is like one gigantic obstacle course of challenges for my libido. And my libido is one sexy love song away from kissing her senseless and taking her home.

But, I’m not a serious kind of guy, and she’s not a one-night-stand kind of woman. If we cross the horizontal line, we might risk our sure thing and end up out of tune forever…

My Review

Friends-to-lovers’ romances are definitely my thang and the way Lauren Blakely crafts Miller and Ally’s story proves that, despite the characters’ fears, their foundation as friends is an amazing building block for more, which means that their misgivings may have been warranted, but they didn’t need to overthink the damage that could possibly be done because it’s more than obvious that these two would fight to keep their connection flourishing, in whatever capacity that meant for them.

I love the ease of Miller and Ally’s friendship; the support they constantly provide each other. There’s something so natural about it, and those strong feelings of friendship can easily turn to more given the subtle feelings that seem to spark between them. And let me tell you…when these two go all in – THEY GO ALL IN. There’s no second-guessing…no shy exchanges; in fact, Miller and Ally’s friendship and strong connection transfers to their physical relationship and growing intimacy, illustrating all the ways these two can show each other just how they feel about what they’re building, both personally and professionally.

Miller’s personality resonates off of the pages; his love for music and life is almost contagious because the way he shares his passion and goes about rebuilding a singing career that he’s missed illustrates exactly who he is and who and what he finds value in. Lauren Blakely allows readers to see the many diverse sides of him, the playful friend one, the sexy rockstar, the obnoxious younger brother, so we truly understand who he is at his core and recognize that there’s more to Miller than his good looks and his musical prowess.

I have to say that Ally is definitely in contention for one of my all-time favorite Lauren Blakely heroines. She’s so down-to-earth and authentic; she doesn’t try to be someone who she’s not and the way she cares for and loves Chloe is so heartfelt.

I love getting inside her head and hearing some of her unsuspecting, less than friendly thoughts about her bff, and then when she and Miller decide to pursue their passions together in a number of significant ways, it’s more than entertaining to witness her realizations and to see her get lost inside her thoughts when her heart seems to want one thing while her head tells her another. She’s a refreshing heroine who many readers will ‘get’ which makes connecting to her and her story that much easier.

Like in most of Blakey’s books/series, the secondary characters play a significant role in the story line and in the lives of the main characters, and that continues to be the case in Blakey’s Heartbreakers series, and as the circle of friends and family members grows, the main characters’ interactions with them, the advice they share, and the bonds they build just add another layer to the lives they’re living.

Once Upon a Sure Thing, book two in Lauren Blakey’s Heartbreakers series, further illustrates why Blakely dominates the romantic comedy genre and why she’s an absolute must read and instant one-click author for romance readers like me. I’m beyond excited for Miles’ book! I can’t wait to see what Blakely has in store for this sexy rocker.

Excerpt

~Miller~

She sings like a sinner. She sings like an angel. She sounds like whiskey and sugar. I’ve only ever known her for her church-bell voice, but now she’s a glorious mix of dirty and sweet, and I never knew she had it in her.

But I can’t marinate in this change-up. It’s showtime for me.

Grabbing the mic, I dive into my first line as I gaze into those blue eyes of my friend. Only I have to think of her as Honey, so I sing to the new woman about how I can’t do without her, how I need her now.

Something is in the air between us when we sing, something charged. Something that hasn’t been there before. Stage chemistry.

I move closer as if I’m drawn by the pull of gravity that I have no control over. We lock eyes and everyone else fades away. I’m still in shock that I’m loving singing a song with my best friend.

That’s what terrifies me. Especially since we sound good together, and we move well together.

Maybe we even look good together, as we belt out this hot-as-fuck duet, and for the first time we’re not butchering a holiday tune or destroying “Total Eclipse of the Heart” at karaoke. As she moves closer to me, we sing the final chorus like it’s going out of style, and when the music softens, I can’t resist. I finger a strand of her blonde wig, the coconut scent from her lotion floating into my nose.

Reluctantly, I let the hair fall.

Clapping rings loud in my ears.

Jackson, Miles, and Campbell give a standing O. Jackson holds up his phone, pointing to it, letting me know he caught it on video.

“Chemistry,” the guys all shout, practically in unison.

But I’m not supposed to have chemistry with my best friend.

That’s the problem.

“What the hell just happened here?” I whisper to Ally, befuddled.

Her mouth opens, and her eyes go wide, and she blurts out, “I have an appointment. I need to go.”

She takes off, leaving in her wake a trail of chemistry and coconut and confusion.

“Once Upon a Sure Thing is another must-read rom-com from Lauren Blakely. It’s just as heart-meltingly romantic, just as sinfully sexy, and just as achingly sweet as the first book in the Heartbreakers Series.”

Yvette at Nose Stuck in a Book

“This book was HOT. Sizzling. The build up, the banter, just everything about these two is amazing. The anticipation was killing me. And when they’re together? Holy moly wow, hot as hell!”

About CD Reiss
CD Reiss is a New York Times bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn’t pick up she’s at the well hauling buckets.
Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master’s degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels.
She’s frequently referred to as the Shakespeare of Smut which is flattering but hasn’t ever gotten her out of chopping that cord of wood.
If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.

Willow Taylor lives in a castle with large walls and iron fences. But this is no ordinary castle. It’s called Heartstone Psychiatric hospital and it houses forty other patients. It has nurses with mean faces and techs with permanent frowns.

It has a man, as well. A man who is cold and distant. Whose voice drips with authority. And whose piercing gray eyes hide secrets, and maybe linger on her face a second too long.

Willow isn’t supposed to look deep into those eyes. She isn’t supposed to try to read his tightly leashed emotions. And neither is she supposed to touch herself at night, imagining his powerful voice and that cold but beautiful face.

No, Willow Taylor shouldn’t be attracted to Simon Blackwood, at all.

Because she’s a patient and he’s her doctor. Her psychiatrist.

The medicine man.

WARNING: This book discusses sensitive issues including but not limited to, depression and suicide.

Excerpt

“I… Can I go now?” I whisper.

He bends toward me. Not like he did yesterday when he was all shaken up and furious. This leaning is slow and filled with a different kind of intensity.

“No.”

I swallow, looking into his eyes, which have moved down to my lips. Has he ever looked at my mouth before? I can’t remember. He’s always been so professional and distant that just one look of his seems exaggerated, almost too much to handle.

“W-why not?”

“Because I’m curious about something.”

I lick my lower lip. I swear it’s not meant to be provocative. It’s just that his stare is making them tingle and dry out. I didn’t know that a body part could be shy until this man focused on it like this.

“About what?”

Again, I’m expecting one thing but something entirely different happens. Instead of answering with his words, he touches me. Of his own volition.

His hands wrap around my neck, his fingers spanning the entire length of my throat, tilting my face up. My eyes are wide; I can feel it. I can feel them popping out. I can feel my heart popping out too, bursting with too many beats.

He’s touching me.

Touching. The litmus test of attraction.

“I’m curious about,” he whispers, his breath wafting over my nose, drugging my senses. “Why the fuck do I want to kiss you?”

“What?”

My hands reach up and hold his wrists. I feel like my world just went unsteady and I can’t stand up straight without his help.

Did he just… Did he say he wants to kiss me?

There’s a slight frown on his forehead, as if he’s genuinely perplexed. As if I’m a riddle and so is his desire to kiss me.

“It doesn’t make sense.” His gray, almost black, gaze flicks back and forth. “You’re my patient. You’re my responsibility. I’m supposed to fix you, not think about your lips. I’m not supposed to think about your mouth or the taste of your tongue. If you really taste like you smell.”

“How… How do I smell?”

His chuckle is short and harsh as he moves his hand and grabs my face. “Like lemons. Like you’ve been sucking on lemon wedges all day long with that pink mouth of yours.”

I feel the heat of his hand on my flesh. He’s burning up, slowly boiling over. “I-I… It’s the lime jello,” I reply, as if that’s the most important thing in the world right now. Explaining the source of my smell and possibly my taste too.

“You’re not my type,” he growls, pushing his forehead against mine.

“I’m sorry?”

“You’re young. You’re reckless. Inexperienced. You believe in happy endings, don’t you? Fairy tales and fucking magic.”

His breaths are wild, frustrated. Like believing in good things is a bad habit. Believing in something bigger than you is silly.

I frown, pressing harder against his forehead. “Of course I do. If someone like me doesn’t believe in magic, then there’s no hope for anyone else. There’s no hope for me. And it’s not a bad thing, you know. It’s not a bad thing to believe in something. In fact, it shows that you’re brave and –”

His mouth pulls into a humorless smile. “And you don’t know when to shut the fuck up.”

“Hey –”

“Willow.”

He flattens my cheeks with his hands, asserting all his stupid authority over me. Too bad it only makes me hornier and I have to clench my thighs against the shivers running through my lower body.

“What?” I somehow manage to squeak.

“Shut the fuck up.”

I gasp; how dare he?

But it gets swallowed up by his mouth.

AUDIO REVIEW AND EXCLUSIVE AUDIO CLIP: BRANT’S RETURN by Mia Sheridan

BRANT’S RETURN, A Sign of Love, Capricorn, IS LIVE on Audible!

• Listen now!! ——> https://adbl.co/2M6LFPl

Blurb

A stunning, heartfelt new stand-alone by New York Times best-selling author Mia Sheridan – available in audio first

Brant Talbot runs a glitzy network of high-end bars in New York City, enjoying all the benefits of the lavish lifestyle he’s worked so hard to achieve. When he learns that his estranged father is dying, he must return to his family’s Kentucky horse farm – and to a past he thought he left behind.

While facing long-buried truths, he collides with his father’s secretary, Isabelle Farris. Despite his undeniable attraction to the beautiful, independent young woman, he sees secrets in her eyes and believes she has designs on Graystone Hill.

Now the one woman he can’t afford to trust is about to become the one he can’t let go.

Ebook & Print, coming January 8th. (No pre-order for ebook/print)

My Review

I’m a huge fan of Mia Sheridan’s writing; she infuses so much heart into her stories that it’s impossible not to get wrapped up in the lives of her characters and the issues that they would rather run from than face, even though there will come a point in the story when dealing with the past will be the only way for them to build a new life in the present.

In the Audible Original, Brant’s Return, Sheridan takes readers on an overwhelmingly heartfelt, emotional, and suspenseful journey – one that begins with a devastating and life altering moment for the heroine and then continues to tell her story and the path she follows that helps to heal her and also allows her to bring a dying man’s son home after over a decade’s absence.

Isabelle Farris is a unique heroine, not only because of what she’s endured but also because she doesn’t allow her pain and heartbreak to completely define her life, even if, at times, it’s incredibly difficult to not succumb to the memories of her past. For the past few years, Belle has found comfort and peace at Graystone Hill through its equine program and even with its cantankerous owner. She’s a loving, caring, and compassionate woman who breathes new life into her place of employment, even if Mr. Talbot is an ornery old cuss, and because Isabelle wants her boss to have a chance to say goodbye, something she wasn’t able to do, she works to bring Mr. Talbot’s son home to Kentucky even if she doesn’t understand the reasons for his absence.

Brant Talbot may have once been a good ole country boy, but for the past decade or so, he’s been known as the Bourbon King of New York, building his own empire one bar at a time, but one phone call brings his past into the present, and he’s forced to decide if heading back to Kentucky is worth the pain that will come with it since he’s never truly dealt with what sent him running from the place he used to call home.

The hero and heroine both are fighting demons from their pasts, but while Isabelle is working through what/who she’s lost, focusing on taking each day as it comes, Brant can’t let go of his last memories of Graystone Hill and Mia Sheridan brilliantly illustrates that fact with his arrogant and assholish behavior. But as Brant’s time on the ranch continues and he gets out of his own way, Brant soon sees Isabelle how everyone else at Graystone Hill does, and he starts to realize that his posh life in New York isn’t as fulfilling as he once thought, but what that means for Brant, his father, and his developing feelings for Isabelle remains unclear because there are too many variables to deal with and work through not to mention the fact that Brant and Isabelle live in two completely different worlds.

Brant’s Return’s blurb doesn’t indicate the depth of this story, so I wasn’t quite prepared for the emotional torment that occurred from its first few pages. Listeners can’t help but feel EVERYTHING that Isabelle fights through because her perspective is so emotionally charged and it’s remarkable to hear how she lived her life even when she wanted to succumb to the pain. Belle is a fighter and that shines through in her interactions and attitude towards Brant, his father, and the community she was forced to leave behind.

Jacob Morgan and Virginia Rose do a great job narrating Isabelle and Brant’s story, and while, in my opinion, this is much more Isabelle’s story than Brant’s due to her backstory and what she still must work through, through Brant’s eyes, listeners hear Brant’s truths and understand his past actions as well as why he struggles to come to terms with everything he feels for Isabelle and learns about the night that irrevocably changed the direction of his life.

A Nordic King by Karina Halle
Publication Date: September 21, 2018
Genre: Contemporary Romance

A Nordic King AMAZON (1).jpg

Synopsis

When I first applied for the job I thought it would be like all the others: working as a nanny for an aristocratic family.

Then I got the job and found out how wrong I was.

Now I’m the new nanny for two adorable little girls who happen to be princesses.

Their father is the widowed King of Denmark.

And my new home? The royal palace in Copenhagen.

Adjusting to my new life isn’t easy but the hardest part hasn’t been the girls who still grieve over the loss of their mother.

It’s their father.

Cold, mysterious and moody, with an icy stare that seems to penetrate your soul, King Aksel may have hired me to take care of his daughters but he wants as little to do with me as possible.

Yet the longer I share these palace walls with this man, the more that I’m drawn to him. His chiseled face and sexual swagger are only part of the package. It’s in the long, intense glances at the dinner table, the way we’ll brush up against each other in the halls, the rare glimpses of the man deep inside, like the sun passing through clouds.

But no matter how I feel about him, we can never be together.

You think it’s bad enough being in love with your boss?

Try falling in love with a king.

My Review

I had the extreme pleasure of beta reading Aksel and Aurora’s story, and right from the start, I knew these two characters were something special and that despite the fact that they came from much different worlds and experienced much different lives that the Nordic King and his nanny were going to find a way to bring light into each other’s lives, even if it meant they got their hearts trampled on in the process.

The first thing that is made abundantly clear to Aurora from her employer is that she is nothing more than the help. She has a job to do and will be held accountable to do so while ensuring that she doesn’t do anything to embarrass the royal family or herself. What’s also clearly illustrated from the beginning is that Aksel is a man’s man…a King’s King so to speak and because that moniker carries clout and power, he wields it without thought to anyone else, especially a certain American beauty who is way too appealing for his sanity and for her own good, not to mention that she doesn’t hold her tongue when he’s acting like an ass or making comments that are both presumptuous and downright mean.

As the story continues and Aksel and Aurora’s lives further intersect, it’s quite obvious that they’re attracted to each other, despite their brains knowing it’s a useless attraction – one that can never be acted on – due to their differing circumstances and statuses. But the sexual tension that exists between them will never fully dissipate and it’s a point of contention, unknowingly, for both of them, seeing how Aksel’s mistreatment of her and intolerance for some of the things she does is the way that he copes with his ‘unwanted’ desires for her.

Something has to give between them, though, if Aksel and Aurora are expected to be constantly around each other and when that breaking point hits, the repercussions may be too much for them to bear given the fact that they’re both harboring secrets that could not only change their perception of each other but also lead to further complications if the information got out to the wrong people or person. But the flip side to that is that once Aksel and Aurora finally give into their need for one another perhaps, together, they’ll find something that’s always been missing from their lives, making it absolutely necessary for both of them to endure the more than bumpy ride it may be to be seen as a couple in love not just a King and his nanny.

Karina Halle did an outstanding job of layering her hero and heroine in a way that is obvious to readers; there’s a depth to these characters that force readers to truly see Aksel and Aurora as more than complex people in a complicated situation. These two have gotten so used to wearing masks, pretending that they have their shit together when, really, they’re both a bit of a hot mess underneath. But that’s what makes it easy to connect to them because they’re human beings just like anyone else, which means that regardless of titles and power, they make mistakes…they feel guilt and grief…they yearn for a true sense of family and love – ones that have no ulterior motives…no agenda or duplicitous plans, and somehow, Aksel and Aurora find that in each other, indicating that despite the outside world…despite Aksel’s mercurial demeanor and kingly status, these two belong together, not just as King and the nanny…not just as the boss and the help…not just as the ruler and his subject, but as a man and woman who transform when they’re together into someone they haven’t been in a long time or maybe even ever.

There is an amazing support cast of characters in A Nordic King, and many of them help both Aksel and Aurora see themselves for who they are and what they need. Aksel’s two princesses are so pivotal to the story line as a whole because not only are they the reason that Aurora is hired, but they also are there to remind Aksel that life goes on…that living in the present and truly experiencing all that it has to offer does not necessarily lessen the grief or the guilt but it helps to prove just how much Aksel’s daughters need and want him to be more present in their lives and Aurora’s definitely a part of that package and while that complicates things, it also brings life, laughter, and happiness back into the castle and into the hearts and souls of so many people.

Aksel and Aurora’s individual journeys as well as the one they take together is vividly illustrated throughout the entire story, and while, at times, I wanted to throttle Aksel for his Jekyll and Hyde actions/reactions, I knew that it would be a process for him to change his ways…change the parts of himself that had been closed off for so long, but what I also knew was that Aurora’s presence, the way she treated his daughters, and the way she stood up to him would prove just how much he needed and wanted her, which makes their bumpy start and the uphill battle that the go against worth every minute of anger, frustration, and even heartbreak.

REVIEW BLITZ: GUILTY AS SIN by Meghan March

Guilty until proven innocent.

That’s the way the world works, right?

I’m tired of being convicted without evidence, all because my last name is Gable.

The Riscoffs might own this town, but I’m done following their rules.

If only I could forget just how easily Lincoln Riscoff can drag me under his spell.

My Review

‘A Gable and a Riscoff could never be together. Fate would never let it happen.’

‘Nothing good can ever come of it.’

This is the same old tune that Whitney has had to listen to for countless years from both sides of the feud, but it’s also what she’s had to keep telling herself every time she gets pulled back into Lincoln’s life and starts to feel like they can face everything together and still remain whole.

Whitney and Lincoln’s past and present illustrates the fact that when they’re together, regardless of how strong their connection is, bad things happen…people get hurt…loss and regret run rampant. But what it comes down to is the fact that neither Whitney nor Lincoln have been living for themselves; they’ve been taking care of everyone else, whether it be the family business, Ricky’s career, or those left behind after the horrible accident took the lives of those they loved. And by putting others before themselves, they’ve made a mess of a once and a lifetime kind of connection…kind of love, and it’s that bond that both of them seem desperate to get back, but it’s easier said than done because as more secrets are revealed and the true nature of things is discovered, it’s unclear whether it’s still going to be the Riscoffs vs. the Gables or if Lincoln and Whitney will pave their own way, uniting the two families in a way that no one thought possible?

The second book in a trilogy, in my opinion, is always a tricky one for the author to create and for the reader to read; it needs to bridge the gap between the first and the third in a way that moves the plot forward but also sheds light on all of the backstory content that readers need to understand in order to garner a clear picture of what the hero and the heroine are up against, and that can sometimes feel tedious or a bit stagnant in the build up to book three, and that’s a little bit how I felt as I read Guilty As Sin…

So, while the flashbacks of everything that occurred between Lincoln and Whitney and the Gables and Riscoffs 10 years ago help to solidify the big picture as to why these two families detest one another, I felt like the story line lost a bit of the momentum that I felt it had after finishing book 1. Don’t get me wrong…I still very much enjoyed Guilty as Sin and I’m beyond excited to see what Meghan March has in store for Lincoln and Whitney as well as her readers after she left us with one heck of a cliffhanger at the end of book 2, but I did lose some of the connection I felt to the characters and all that they were forced to deal with and overcome. But I’m not worried that it’s gone for good; in fact, I’m almost positive that with where the characters’ lives are heading that there are bound to be a few more bombshells and that now that Whitney’s found her backbone again and has stopped living so much in the past that readers will want to revel in all sexy and angsty goodness that will bring Lincoln and Whitney’s journey to an end.

3.5/4 Poison Apples

From New York Times bestselling author Meghan March comes a brand new saga of forbidden love and second chances.

A Riscoff and a Gable can never live happily ever after. Our family feud is the stuff of legends.

Ten years ago, Whitney Gable caught me off guard with her long legs and grab-you-by-the-balls blue eyes.

I didn’t know or care what her name was.

Like any Riscoff worth the family name, I went after what I wanted. We burned like a flash fire until she married another man.

She hates me, and she should.

I objected on her wedding day.

Now she’s home, with those same long legs and man-eater stare, but there’s no ring on her finger.

They say a Riscoff and a Gable can never live happily ever after . . . but I’m not done with Whitney Gable.

I’ll never be done with her.

Whitney Gable is the kind of woman you fight to the death to protect.

To keep.

To cherish.

I’ve finally learned my lesson, and it’s time to prove I’m the man who’s worthy of her.

I don’t care what it takes, because failure is not an option.

No matter who or what stands in our way—this time, she’ll be mine forever
