My Review

The thing that I’ve learned about J.L. Berg’s storytelling since I was introduced to her stories is that each and every one has heart, has powerful emotions, and has lessons to be learned through the characters’ experiences and conflicts. There hasn’t been one that hasn’t resonated in some way with me due to the relatability of the story line or the realistic presentation of her characters’ concerns and/or problems, and in Berg’s newest release, The Mistakes I’ve Made, I’m, once again, struck by how her characters’ struggles speak to me and make me hope against hope that the hero and heroine will find a way through the maelstrom and come out of it changed in ways that allow them to move forward instead of focusing on the past.

Despite the fact that Leilani (Lani) Hart, a hotel heiress, and Taylor Sutherland,

a business man in the small island town of Ocracoke, North Carolina, seemed to have lived very different lives and don’t appear to share a common vision about what’s to be done with the renovation of Ocracoke’s only hotel, they do manage to find common ground as the story progresses, proving that attraction and chemistry can easily overshadow first impressions and preconceived notions.

It’s easy to understand what motivates Lani’s actions and what she hopes to gain by overseeing the hotel’s revamping, but what’s also clear is that her father has never truly seen her as anything other than someone beneath him, and I don’t see that changing despite her best efforts. Readers can’t help but feel for this lonely girl who just wants her father’s love and acceptance, and even though that doesn’t seem to be something that will happen, the fact that Lani finds a new path to take during her time in Ocracoke, we’re hopeful that the connection she seeks can be found in people who see her for the amazing woman that she’s always been.

Taylor may resent the fact that he was never able to leave his small hometown and adventure out on his own, but he’s made the best of it by being a successful businessman and quite the ladies’ man as well, and even though he sees Lani and her father’s company as an enemy of Ocracoke, when he’s chosen to keep an eye on the pretty interloper and be the go between to ensure that Hart International’s intentions meet the wants and needs of the townspeople, these two ‘enemies’ become friends and soon give into the sexual tension that has surrounded them since Lani set foot on the small town island.

The title itself also lends to symbolic meanings, but even after finishing the text, I’m still not quite sure whose mistakes are in question and who deserves the forgiveness that could be obtained…but perhaps that Berg’s intention, which means that all readers are on point in their assessment of who’s to learn and who’s to forgive.

My Review

After finishing the last page of Reckoning, I was desperate to know what would happen in Vincent and Eve’s final book because even though I understood why Vincent did what he did to save Eve, removing her from the darkness of the New York City nights, Vincent crushed Eve’s spirit, shredded her confidence, and brought her to her knees in all the worst ways, which means their path back to one another was going to be almost impossible.

So the wait to see what Jessica Ruben had in store for her two main characters was excruciating, but now that Redemption is here, I almost didn’t want to read it because that would mean that it’s over and I’d have to move on from this couple who have introduced me to one heck of a new romance author.

When Vincent leaves New York and the mafia behind, it appears that freedom is truly his for the first time and in all the ways that matter, but the question is…at what cost because it’s clear that Vincent’s past misdeeds and his father’s refusal to accept Vincent’s choice to leave the family business are going to affect his present and most definitely his future with Eve, and that fact is always in the background…always just beneath the surface because a snake like Antonio Borignone can only be stopped one way.

The fact that Jessica Ruben allows readers into Vincent’s head and provides us with his thoughts about how much of a mess he made weighs greatly on our perception of him. Vincent owns up to his bad choices and the fact that he not only ruined a significant part of his life by being locked up but he also destroyed the woman who owns his heart and he has to deal with that fact and try to make amends if she’ll allow it, which seems a bit of a crap shoot since readers witnessed how deeply Vincent’s betrayal and mistreatment cost her in terms of her mental/emotional strength.

For me, the last book in the series is more about Vincent and his steps to redemption and transformation, so while Eve factors into Vincent’s plans, I feel like her role in the final part of their story is weighing whether she can risk her heart again with the same man who broke it, not so much having to change who she is or what she wants. In the length of time that Vincent was in prison, Eve struggled with herself, with the truth, and with the pain, so even though she’s a kickass attorney, she lost so much of herself when Vincent hurt her that she hasn’t been able to be her true self until Vincent walks back into her life and it’s that idea that almost cripples her again because she doesn’t want to need this man who she gave everything to and then he destroyed.

The conclusion of Vincent and Eve’s story is bittersweet in some ways; the fact that we, as readers, have been with this couple since the beginning and are able to trace their feelings and their growth in such detail makes it difficult to say goodbye to them and their world, but it also is exciting because I can’t wait to see the new characters and settings that Jessica Ruben creates for her readers, so I hang onto that idea and hope readers haven’t seen the last of Vincent and Eve.

My Review

A first love like the one that Jace and Faith shared is supposed to last forever…it’s supposed to weather any storm…supposed to endure the ups and downs that come with young love because a bond like that…a connection that strong should be unable to be break…

But, that’s not what happened to Jace and Faith’s relationship; in fact, it seemed to fracture quite easily and without much of an understanding as to why it was abruptly destroyed, and now that a decade has passed and Jace returns home after walking away without looking back, these two broken souls need to find a way to coexist…find a way to not allow the hurt, the grief, and the regret to continue to break the pieces that have already endured too much.

The first aspect of More of You that immediately stood out to me was just how many obstacles A.L. Jackson forced Jace and Faith to face; roadblocks that were both seen and hidden, and in those situations, Jace and Faith never knew what would stand up against them; the only thing that they knew for sure was that retribution was wanted by others and Jace, regardless of Faith’s resistance, would do what he needed to do to keep Faith safe, even if he let her down before.

The reasons for Jace’s departure, the circumstances that bring him back, and the individual secrets that Jace and Faith have are gradually revealed as the story line shifts from present to past and light is shed on their time together as teenagers and their time apart as adults, struggling to keep going when life’s circumstances seem to keep pushing them down. And what makes things even worse is that there are flashbacks to happier times but also intricate details of the very moment

that crushed their hearts and their souls and as both Jace and Faith tell their story and offer their perspective as well as their internal thoughts, readers get a clearer picture of why everything happened and what Jace’s walking away cost them.

I do have to admit that, at times, the story is beyond frustrating, but that’s only because I wanted the complete details of Jace and Faith’s backstory from the very beginning; I couldn’t quite understand why this couple’s love deteriorated or why it was going to be such a battle to bring these two back together.

The lessons and themes of Jace and Faith’s story resonate from its pages; the idea of living with regret…with grief…with a fractured soul that just laid gaping for quite some time despite the effort to move on…to move forward…to begin again is woven expertly in A.L. Jackson’s words. Faith’s tears and the couple’s pain lingered in its paragraphs and chapters but so did their moments of healing.

More of You is a thoughtful and soulful read – one that speaks to the hearts of all of its readers because the characters’ journey bring forth hope despite the overwhelming darkness and sadness that have surrounded these two, proving that at the heart of Jace and Faith’s lives is a powerful love that never completely diminished and this second chance is something that Jace plans to take advantage of because not only will he keep Faith safe from the danger that seems to be coming for her without any provocation but he also will prove to her that the connection they once shared can be renewed; she only needs to open up her heart again, which is easier said than done given what she’s been through both with and without Jace beside her.

A.L. Jackson definitely knows how to craft second chance love stories – ones that are filled with romance and emotions and ones that prove why the outcome is worth the risk despite the amount of time it may take to prove that the characters’ love deserves the possibility of being repaired and renewed despite what has already had to be endured.

Campbell Mason Evans was known as Mason Hart, one third of the band the Heartbreakers, but all of that changed when he became a father to Samantha, and while he still keeps his passion for music alive, the musician lifestyle and everything that comes with it is not who he is anymore and he’s more than fine with his new life.

A Real Good Time…

That’s something that single mom, Mackenzie, hasn’t had a lot of lately, unless you count the time she spends at The Grouchy Owl proving that her moniker of ‘trivia queen’ is more than appropriate. Mackenzie’s priorities are her 13 year old son and her job, which doesn’t leave time for anything else, at least according to her.

Once Upon A Real Good Time…

The instant spark between Mackenzie and Campbell led to a night where they could just be themselves, giving into their desires for one another and remembering what it’s like to go a little wild in the most delicious ways possible. But what that means for who they are outside of their glorious night together is still in question, especially when their ‘mom’ and ‘dad’ lives intersect.

The circumstances that Mackenzie and Campbell find themselves in due to the direction their lives took and the difficult choices they made are relatable and realistically portrayed and the fact that Lauren Blakely allows both of her main characters’ voices/perspectives to be heard as they juggle parenthood, a career, and a blossoming personal life – all factors that overwhelm, frustrate, and amaze them on any given day – provides the perfect amount of insight to understand why Mackenzie and Campbell can’t just completely give in to the chemistry between them without considering the potential risks.

The supporting characters, particularly Campbell’s brothers and daughter as well as Mackenzie’s best friend and son, make this story even more well-rounded and entertaining because Lauren Blakely makes them a priority; she understands how pivotal the main characters’ children are to the big picture and to any relationship that may develop between Campbell and Mackenzie and the insights that the other characters help to expose proves why the main characters have chosen the path they’re living and why it would have to be something extraordinary for them to deviate from the status quo.

Lauren Blakely, once again, proves why her romantic comedies are some of the best around; her characters are extremely likable, their perspectives are emotionally rich and thoughtful, and the plot line flows organically based on the conflicts the hero and heroine must struggle through in order to appease everyone and everything involved.

Once Upon a Real Good Time has a great mix of sweet and sexy as well as family time and personal time, and it also allows readers to truly see who the hero and the heroine are and why they, too, deserve to be happy in every sense of the word.
