My Review

It’s easy to have preconceived ideas about a character when her name implies her rather introverted personality, and when it comes to Bethany “Mouse” Hobbes, her nickname completely exemplifies her demeanor, and while for some alpha heroes may take issue with Bethany’s ‘mousey’ behavior, the two men who want to claim her are more than happy to have a natural submissive to play with and love.

I’m always intrigued with how the logistics work out as well as how the differing personalities blend in a ménage relationship, and with how at odds Trev McNamara & Bo O’Malley seem to be with one another as well as what they as well as Bethany want and need from each other, it’s clear these three have a lot to work through, individually, as friends, and then as a threesome because if their past issues aren’t resolved before they head into their new dynamic, it won’t last and something tells me these three need it to last.

Out of the three main characters, Bethany definitely shows the most growth and the more she comes out of her shell and takes back her life in a way that makes her feel alive and independent, the easier it is for her to give this new relationship a real chance despite her past heartache due to Bo’s obliviousness.

At times, both Bo and Trev were wild cards. My opinion of Bo was already judgmental due to his history with Bethany, so it took quite awhile for Bo to grow on me, and even when I was finished with their story, I still wasn’t completely sold on the idea that he could make things work between the three of them. There’s a lot of ego and issues these two men need to work through and Trev’s addictive personality is not something that will ever go away; he constantly struggles with that part of his personality and while he holds it at bay, it doesn’t mean it’s easy.

In keeping with Sophie Oak’s storytelling and plotting, there’s a bit of suspense involved in Bethany, Trev, and Bo’s book, and while it probably wasn’t necessary to include that type of conflict given the amount of concerns that needed to be dealt with, it still adds a bit of mystery and intrigue amidst the love affair that occurs throughout Siren in Waiting.

Bo walked up, his boots resounding against the pavement. His dark-blond hair was curling over his shirt collar. He was so beautiful, but in a different way than Trev. His hand came out to touch her shoulder. “What’s wrong?”

And he’d always been able to read her when he bothered to try. “I didn’t get the loan.”

She tensed a bit. Bo hadn’t wanted her to buy the house in the first place. He would probably tell her it was for the best and now she could sell the land to a developer and move someplace safer and way more boring.

“Oh, baby, I’m sorry.” Bo pulled her against his chest right there in the middle of Main Street. He wrapped his arms around her. “I know what that meant to you.”

She froze for a moment. He usually kept his affectionate nature private. It was sweet to be held by him, something she’d dreamed of a thousand times. He still smelled like the soap from the shower he’d insisted on taking before they left for town. His well-worn cotton shirt was soft against her cheek, but his chest was all muscle. After a moment, she let herself sink into him. The tears were back. She couldn’t hold them off when he was giving her a place to cry.

“I don’t know what to do. They said I don’t qualify. I have to have that money. I can’t fix up the house without it.”

His hand found her hair. “It’s going to be okay. We’ll find another bank. Hell, Aidan knows lots of people with money. You’ll see. It’s going to be okay. Now, come on, dry those tears and let’s go get some pie. I was talking to Jerry at the feed store, and he said Patty had pecan today.”

She loved pecan pie.

Relief washed over her as Bo began to lead her toward the diner. She’d been terrified that Bo would be angry that she was seeing Trev. She’d played it off as nothing, but she’d been scared he would turn away.

Instead, he opened the door for her and started to ask her about her plans. He seemed interested for the first time. Bo ordered for them both and then gave her his full attention. He was quieter than she’d ever seen him before. Well, except for that night when she’d had to find her way to Austin to get him. He’d been quieter then. He hadn’t talked for days. She didn’t like to think about that night.

“Hey,” Bo said, leaning over and putting a hand over hers. “It’s going to be okay, you know. We’ll find a way to get your house fixed up. Tell me something, is that boyfriend of yours going to be worth anything beyond hauling you into bathrooms in the middle of the day? Does he know anything about home repair?”

She flushed, but Bo had said the words with no accusation in his tone, just a sad smile on his face. She shook her head. “He told me to buy a book.”

Bo sighed. “We’re in trouble. Well, show me your plans. Let’s see how screwed we are.”

He gave her that smile that lit up her world and reminded her of all the reasons she’d fallen in love with him in the first place. He was a sunny presence. He always made her laugh, and deep down, he understood her.

Trev was her lover, but she would miss Bo. She would miss him so much.

She showed him her list, and by the time they were done, she felt better.

She would find a way. She would fix her house, and she would keep Trev and Bo in her life. She needed them.

My Review

There’s nothing like a slow burn, friends-to-lovers, feel good romance to end my summer with, and Cam and Natalie’s story illustrates just how easily a friendship can turn to love when there’s an underlying attraction, an unbreakable bond, and an overwhelming amount of feelings just waiting to be brought to the surface.

It’s always interesting to see how an author guides her characters from one kind of meaningful relationship to another – one that could, in some ways, bring these two friends even closer together or irrevocable destroy a cherished connection.

The circumstances that surround Cam and Natalie’s burgeoning ‘more-than-friendship’ is unique due to a bet made between Cam and their other best friend, Jack, after Jack’s girlfriend breaks up with him; because what was originally supposed to be an ‘easy win’ for Cam turns into one more complication in the shifting dynamics of his and Natalie’s relationship.

Because Kendall Ryan gifts readers with both Cam and Natalie’s perspectives, we hear all of their internal musings, and when they realize their feelings for one another are deeper than they initially or for the past decade recognized, they struggle with the decision to see what they could be compared to the friendship they’ve spent the last ten years building.

What I enjoyed most about Flirting With Forever is getting to know who Cam and Natalie are and how genuine they both are. Cam is a great guy with a sweet and genuine heart and he gives so much of himself to other people and Natalie is such a strong and caring person whose independence makes her perfect for Cam and the fact that readers are there every step of the way makes it more than obvious that these two friends were always destined for more.

My Review 

There’s a lot to unpack in book one of Cole Danforth and Josie Mays’ duet, and even though I’m left with a large amount of unanswered questions at the end of If We Fall, what has been made more than clear is that the love that Cole and Josie once shared before their lives and worlds were upended in tragedy still remains and even though it has laid dormant for 10 years, with Josie’s return to Castille, Maine, these two are, once again, in each other’s lives, which will force them to confront their past choices, rehash old wounds, and reconsider decisions that were made that didn’t quite have the expected outcome.

Since that fateful night ten years ago, darkness has become Josie’s enemy in more ways than one because not only does it control her life, her sleep, her everyday living, but it also directs her artistry and it continues to force Josie to be riddled with phobias that refuse to release her. In returning to her hometown to paint a mural to honor her parents, Josie’s hope is that the love and light that her parents brought to her life will help her to overcome her phobias, her fears, and the knowledge that the man she loved is no longer someone she recognizes when she learns about the man he has become.

Cole desperately wants Josie to believe that the man he was…that she loved more than anything is no longer who he is, but as their story continues and Cole’s perspective is brought into the light, readers feel how desperate he is to touch Josie again…to give them both what they seem to so desperately want and need, but he’s held back by details we are not privy to, and as he gives into his old desires, readers witness his struggle to remain the tyrannical business owner who doesn’t care who likes or hates him…the same man who made a choice to walk away from the only woman he ever loved because he thought that was the only way she could move on from what happened.

There are reasons as to why Cole Danforth did what he did a decade ago…reasons he continues to push Josie away now, but there are also reasons why he can’t stay away from her when she returns to town…can’t shut his true feelings off for her when his mind tells him that that’s his only option to protect her.

It’s clear that Cole and Josie can’t escape their pasts…their unrelenting memories…their emotional connection…their beneath the surface love, but it’s also obvious that there is information that Josie doesn’t know about that fateful night, and with the small piece of information that Nina Lane leaves readers with at the end of If We Fall, I’m sure that the entire dynamics of what Josie can’t remember will be unraveled, but what that means for Cole and Josie’s relationship…for their second chance…for their ability to fly together is something I’m struggling to predict. But I trust that Nina Lane and her characters will guide the story where they need it to go, revealing all the unanswered questions and providing some light to both of their darkened lives.

I turn off the intercom and unlock my office door. A few minutes pass before the door flies open. Josie barges in, her hands fisted and an angry light in her eyes.

“You are an asshole,” she snaps.

“I’ve been told.”

“How dare you pull that kind of stunt?”

“It’s the truth.”

“And we both know damned well you brought it up only because I’m involved.” She tosses her backpack and art portfolio onto a chair. She’s trembling with anger. “I don’t care what you think about me, but bringing the people of this town into our personal shit is low, even for you.”

My shoulders tense. “Even for me? What do you know about me?”

“Nothing anymore.” She slams her hands to her hips, her features twisting. “But I used to know everything about you. Do you remember that? Then you walked out on me right when I needed you the most, proving you were never the man I thought you were. Now I find out that you run this company like a dictator, you’re crushing independent businesses and putting people out of work, and you’re publicly trying to stop me from creating a mural that’s intended for both this town and my parents. What the hell happened to you?”

“You happened to me.”

The words fly out of my mouth before I can stop them. The pencil I’m holding breaks in two with the force of my grip.

Josie steps back, her eyes widening. Her dark hair is windblown, her cheeks flushed, her chest heaving under her old army jacket. I’d once had the right to comb her hair back from her forehead, slide my palm over her neck before edging my fingers into her V-necked T-shirt…

My Review

Heading into Love Online, I really didn’t know what to expect; the blurb didn’t give too much away, so as Ryder’s side of the story began, I didn’t anticipate the true nature of Ryder and Eden’s online ‘relationship,’ and while I feel like that was Penelope Ward’s intention, it took me awhile to wrap my head around how this cam girl and cam john were connecting, and even after their feelings began to turn into something real, the screen was not the best way to explore what was developing between them, especially given the nature of Eden’s online persona and the transactions and interactions that Ryder had to endure as he watched his online lady do what she had to do in order to provide for herself and a very important little boy who needed her in all ways possible. 

But, as Eden’s perspective became a part of the story line, I was able to understand the reasons behind her actions, especially after Ward introduced readers to Ollie and illustrated how amazing he is and the assistance that he needs. Eden’s life is so much different than Ryder’s life is and that therein lies the problem…how Ryder and Eden make something work between them despite their differences in lifestyles and locations, keeping in mind that the decisions they make not only impact them but a 10 year old boy who is desperate to feel loved and have a family.

Ollie and Lorena, a constant presence in Ryder’s life since he was little, played pivotal roles in helping this couple find their way, not only to love but also to how they truly wanted to live their lives, and I appreciated the fact that the major conflict was not really another person but where they lived and why it needed to be that way. Those obstacles that stood in their way were realistically portrayed given the reality of what made up Ryder and Eden’s lives and the fact that they didn’t make decisions without really thinking things through speaks to the type of people they are and what they’re willing to do for love.

Love Online’s storyline is definitely a unique take on what kind of relationships develop through the World Wide Web; I’ve read a few other stories that provide insight into the type of profession a cam girl has and what her interactions with her viewers/customers entail, but Ryder and Eden’s story takes things even further because they meet in real life and as readers witness the development of the hero and the heroine’s relationship, the way things evolve speaks to just how real it’s been between them from the very beginning.
