The Truth About Lies (The Truth Duet, #1)

Synopsis

Truth: From over a thousand miles away, I watched on the screen of my phone as two men murdered my wife. And I was helpless to save her.

Consumed by hate and rage, I spent four years running from my memories.

Until a shattered woman gave me a reason to stop.

Cora lived in a nightmare, but through sheer force of will, she’d turned it into something beautiful. She had a smile that could pierce the darkest soul. And with one glance, she shredded mine.

Lie: I was only there for a fresh start.

Lie: I had no idea what I was getting myself into.

Lie: There was nothing I could do to save her, either.

But that’s the thing about lies—you never know who to believe.

My Review

My Truths as I Read:

Truth 1: I wasn’t ready for the raw and gritty world that Aly Martinez constructs around her hero and heroine in The Truth About Lies.

Truth 2: I didn’t forsee that the environment surrounding Cora and Penn would be just as villainous as the antagonists who see most people, especially women, as a possession to take and keep.

Truth 3: I didn’t quite understand the paradoxical nature of the title itself or how its meaning would transform two people who hold most of their own truths hostage, finding more comfort in the lies they tell despite the honesty that is embedded in every false statement.

Truth 4: I didn’t know it was possible for a writer to so clearly and vividly portray her characters’ hellish circumstances and the emotional upheaval that breathing alone costs them.

Truth 5: I understood more clearly the fact that there are consequences to the lies people tell and they must answer to them in a way that will either destroy them or set them free in ways they had never thought possible.

My Truths as I Prepare to Read The Truth About Us.

Truth 1: I’m afraid Cora won’t be able to find her way out of the darkness she’s in now that her life has imploded.

Truth 2: Penn’s life was categorically altered four years ago and now with his pull to Cora, I don’t know if he’ll be able to give either of them what they deserve.

Truth 3: The ending of The Truth About Lies just about killed me! Throughout the entirety of the story, Aly Martinez takes readers on twists and turns that we don’t really see coming and when it all comes to a head in the first book’s resolution, it leaves us questioning the author’s sanity as well as our own as we lose ourselves in this riveting and complicated story and the fact that there is still more to reveal…more to endure…more truths and lies to be shared scares the living hell out of me.

My final thoughts focus on Penn’s constant reminder of ‘One in. One out,’ and while its meaning, in my opinion, changes drastically the deeper Penn gets into Cora’s world, I’m left wondering if its new interpretation is something that will remain in tact as Martinez takes readers into part two of the story, or because the dynamics are more than likely going to change, if its altered view will represent something completely opposite to what it first meant?!?!

Only Martinez and her characters have the answer to that question, and I can’t wait for it to be answered.

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four young children.

Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys cheap wine, mystery leggings, and baked feta. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.

She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a super-sized tumbler of wine by her side.

COVER REVEAL: CRUSHING ON THE COP and ENGAGED TO THE EMT by Piper Rayne

Crushing on the Cop

Release Date: Oct. 25th!

Cristian Bianco has two things against him—he’s a police officer and he’s a police officer in the 18th District…meaning my dad is his boss.

Growing up as the Commander’s daughter and having his magnifying glass focused on everything I did was more than I could handle.

Now, I’m out on my own, living by my own rules. Well, mostly. The ‘job’ I created for myself has me in some hot water and my exit strategy isn’t exactly working out how I’d hoped.

Which is why when my best friend bids on Cristian for me at a charity bachelor auction, I’m not having it. A man in blue is only going to be one thing for me—a problem.

Except after his brother starts dating my best friend he becomes harder to ignore. The eight-pack abs. The sense of style only a girl like me can appreciate. The way he puts his family first. It all adds up to make him one irresistible prospect and has me wondering if he knows how to use those handcuffs the right way—by locking my wrists to his headboard

Engaged to the EMT

Release Date: Dec. 6th

Luca Bianco is a jerk. There I said it.

He thinks he’s so suave and sexy, walking around in his paramedic uniform stretched out by all his hard muscles and saving lives every day. I swear he thinks every woman in the world kill for a chance to be with him.

Men like Luca are good for one thing only—a one-night stand—not commitment. I don’t care if my friend did pay good money at a charity bachelor auction for me to go on a date with him, I refuse to do it.

That is until Luca offers me a deal I can’t refuse, and I agree to be his pretend fiancé.

The heat that’s simmered between us for a decade ignites and I’m not sure even Luca will be able to kickstart my heart after I call code blue.

What’s that saying? Love is blind?

Not true. I can see this head-on collision coming a mile away.

Synopsis

Landing a writing gig in Hollywood was just as difficult as becoming an actor, and something Claire Becker had learned the hard way.

Sure, she didn’t have to conform to ridiculous beauty standards and give up her love for raw cookie dough, but the sting of rejection burned all the same. The only things that kept her sane were her two amazing roommates and her guilty pleasure—writing fan-fiction.

Getting lost in her own world, she’d forget that she had yet to land her dream job, and instead spent time with her dream man—Nick Larsson. Well, at least in the literary sense. Too bad he wasn’t aware or an active participant—her fictional love life, outstanding.

Tall, good-looking and sexy beyond comprehension, Nick Larsson not only had a famous last name—and four equally smoldering brothers—but was talented beyond belief. A star on the rise with a critically acclaimed series, his body and face were what fantasy scripts—and dreams—were made of. Made for some pretty steamy writing opportunities too.

And yes, it was probably “wrong” for Claire to objectify him, but it wasn’t like anyone knew about it. Just her, and her two amazing, supportive roommates.

Or at least they were amazing and supportive, and bound to be missed after Claire killed them.

In a moment of unexplained insanity, one of them —or both, each as bad as the other—sent her latest installments to the man himself.

Cue panic of epic proportions.

All Claire needed to do was sneak into his apartment and retrieve the misappropriated story before Nick, or anyone else, read it and mistook her for a creepy stalker. Although, breaking and entering probably wouldn’t convince anyone to the contrary either.

Claire was going to get the best material of her life, or end up with a restraining order. Either way, the story was getting a hell of lot more interesting.

Synopsis

From NYT Bestseller Corinne Michaels & USA Today Bestseller Melanie Harlow, comes a second chance standalone romance.

Ian Chase broke my heart at seventeen, and I’ve spent the last eighteen years hating him for it.

He makes it easy, with his smart mouth and playboy lifestyle—which I unfortunately have to observe since he lives behind me. Every time I see him climbing out of his pool, practically naked and unreasonably sexy, my blood boils.

I’ve always loved to loathe him.

I never planned to need him.

***

London Parish is my little sister’s best friend, not that it stopped me from falling for her.

Our history is complicated. The only thing we have in common is being godparents to my sister’s three adorable kids—until our lives are changed in one tragic moment.

Now we’re trying to raise the children we love, mourn an unthinkable loss, and fight an undeniable attraction.

My life is already upside-down, and the last thing I need is for old feelings to resurface.

Because I’ll never be able to keep her, no matter how hard I try to hold her close.

Excerpt

“Ian,” my bartender, Toby, calls with his hand out.

“What’s up?”

“You have a call.” He pushes the phone toward me.

No one calls the club for me other than vendors, and it’s eleven-thirty at night, so whoever it is can wait.

“I have to deal with something now, send them to my voicemail.”

He shakes his head. “She’s called three times.” The annoyance in his voice is clear, even over the music.

She?

The only woman that would resort to calling the club is my ex-wife. God only knows what bullshit she wants now. For all I know she broke a nail, it’s my fault, and she thinks I should pay for her new manicure, or a hand replacement. She’s like the gift you’ve tried to return but can’t find the receipt for, so you’re stuck with it. I hate unwanted presents, and I hate Jolene.

“Send the devil to my voicemail,” I say and walk away.

I head out to the sidewalk. Drea wasn’t kidding, the line is nuts. “Hello, Officer,” I say to the pudgy cop standing next to the bouncer.

“Mr. Chase, we’re getting complaints,” he says, looking down the sidewalk at the line.

“I can’t help that we’re popular.” I shrug. “I’m at capacity, and can’t kick out the paying customers to take care of the line.”

“You’re obstructing the entrances of other businesses because of the way your overflow lines are set up.”

How the hell would they like me to handle it? We’re not inside the casino, there’s no way to control the line. I’m not about to turn away people when we hit the number ten. This is a business, and part of the free marketing I get is thanks to the line.

“All right, I’ll figure something out.” I grip the back of my neck.

I feel my phone vibrate in my pocket. If this is Jolene, I swear to God, I might lose my fucking mind.

The name flashes across the screen, London Parish. For fuck’s sake. Like I need to deal with my sister’s uptight, irritating best friend right now. London would be incredibly hot if she wasn’t such a raging bitch. I look at my call log and see this is the third time she’s called.

I walk down the strip a little, and after a few deep breaths, I call her back.

“Ian, you need to come to my house.”

I smirk. “Well, this is a first. Did you have the stick removed from your ass?”

“Don’t. Not today, please. Just come here.” I hear her sniff and my protectiveness kicks in. Someone made her cry. We don’t get along at all—partly because we’re polar opposites and partly because of our history—but no one gets to make her cry.

“Are you hurt?” I ask.

“Not in the way you think.” Her voice hitches.

I’ve known London for twenty-five years. I can count on one hand how many times I’ve seen or heard her cry—I was the reason one of those times.

“What’s wrong? Is it an emergency? Because I’m at work and the club—”

“Now, Ian. You need to come here now.”

She also doesn’t play games.

Fuck.

I look at my watch and blow a deep breath through my nose. It’ll take me at least thirty minutes to get there. This is seriously a shitty night. “I’ll be there as soon as I can.”

“Just . . . hurry,” London says and hangs up.

Dread pulls at my stomach, telling me there’s something going on. I don’t know what, but I know I need to get there.

“Get rid of the line, no more get in,” I tell the bouncer, and then head inside.

Drea is at the bar, and my anxiety is starting to grow. London needs me there, why? What happened? Did someone break into her house? Mine? Maybe it has to do with an ex, if she even has one, or it could be nothing like that. Regardless, her voice was shaky and I can’t waste time wondering.

“I have to go,” I tell Drea.

Her eyes widen. “Go? Go where? It’s a packed house.”

“I’m aware of that, but something came up. I need you to handle things tonight.” I turn to Toby. “Stay until Drea is done closing and I want you to escort her to her car at the end of the night.”

He nods.

I never let her walk out of here alone. Even if I have someone coming home with me, Drea’s not going to be unescorted. Too many men get the wrong impression because she’s nice to them. Over my dead body will she be hurt as a result of working at my club.

After I get in the car, my mind is racing. I drive faster than I should, telling myself that London is just being dramatic.

And then I remember . . . she has my nephew and nieces at her house.

My foot pushes down on the pedal of my Jaguar, making the engine howl with each mile. I turn into the development where we both live, pass my house, and head to hers. I still hate that our backyards touch. Every damn day I see her sitting out on her deck, reading her books, looking down at me with her disapproving attitude.

When I get there, the flashing lights of a police car brighten the road. I don’t think. I don’t know if I even put the car in park before I’m out of the vehicle.

“London!” I yell as I rush through the door. “Christopher? Morgan? Ruby?” I call out for the kids, praying it’s not one of them.

When I get to the living room, I release a heavy sigh—they’re all there, not hurt.

Then I see the tears streaming down Morgan’s face. London gets to her feet. Her eyes are red, puffy, and black mascara runs down her cheeks. “Ian.” She chokes on my name.

“What’s wrong? What happened?”

The girls start to cry again, and my nephew pulls them into his arms.

London moves toward me, placing her hand on my chest. “They’re gone.”

“Who?” I ask, confused.

“Sabrina and David,” she whispers.

Yeah, they went on a trip. Why the hell are they crying? “This is what you called me for? They’ll be home in a few days. Why are you crying too?” I ask.

Her green eyes meet mine and her lips part. “No.” She shakes her head. “They won’t.”

I look over at the kids again, and then to the muted television. My feet move closer, because I have to be sure the words flashing across the screen say what I think they say. “Flight 1184 crashes off the coast of Hawaii. Three hundred missing and presumed dead.”

My sister was going to Hawaii.

My sister is gone.

I sink to my knees in front of the kids, unsure what to say. They just lost their parents, and my heart is breaking. My sister was my best friend. She was the one who pushed me to open Veil and do what I wanted. I’ve always had her support, and now she’s gone.

Christopher lifts his head, his brown eyes filled with unshed tears. “They’ll find them,” he says with conviction.

“Okay,” I reply. We both know it’s a lie, but it’s one he has to tell himself. I remember being fifteen; there was no telling me I was wrong.

“Dad wouldn’t . . .” he starts, and then stops as his lip quivers.

My own tears start to fall, as Morgan grabs my hand. “What do we do now?”

I have no fucking clue. How do I tell these kids how to survive? I’m the last person in the world equipped to give this advice. I look to London. Her hand touches my shoulder and she wipes the tears that fall silently down her cheeks.

“We hold each other close,” she says.

Review

The definition of ‘wanton’ is ‘deliberate, unprovoked; a sexually immodest or promiscuous woman,’ and even though this explanation doesn’t truly describe the main characters in M. Malone and Nana Malone newest release, what it does signify is the more than obvious attraction between Trevor Hamilton and Natalie Washington when they become ‘perfect’ roommates. But due to how their past relationships have turned out as well as the fact that Trevor has too much riding on a letter of recommendation from the very person who arranged his new living situation, he fights the chemistry between him and Natalie, and he works hard to remain far away from a line he doesn’t feel he can cross if he wants to protect his future.

Natalie Washington didn’t really know what she was in for when her aunt found Natalie a place to live, but what she’s left with is a roommate who is beyond attractive and a bit of an ass, but despite Trevor’s less than gentlemanly behavior, Natalie finds herself drawn to him, forming a connection that they can’t help but act upon even if the risk may cost them more than their hearts.

Wanton is a fun, light, and quick read, and even though it’s difficult to know everything there is to know about these two characters due to the length of their story, their witty banter exchanges and lustful interactions illustrate the fact that Trevor and Natalie might just be what each other needs and deserves, fulfilling their wanton desires.

M. Malone

NYT & USA Today bestselling author M. Malone lives in the Washington, DC metro area with her husband and their two sons. She holds a master’s degree in Business from a prestigious college that would no doubt be scandalized by how she’s using her expensive education.

Independently published, she has sold more than 1/2 million ebooks in her two series, THE ALEXANDERS and BLUE-COLLAR BILLIONAIRES. Since starting her indie journey in 2011 with the runaway bestselling novella “Teasing Trent,” her work has appeared on the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists more than a dozen times.

She’s now a full-time writer and spends 99.8% of her time in her pajamas.

Nana Malone

USA Today bestselling author Nana Malone’s love of all things romance and adventure started with a tattered romantic suspense novel she “borrowed” from her cousin.

It was a sultry summer afternoon in Ghana, and Nana was a precocious thirteen. She’s been in love with kick-butt heroines ever since. With her overactive imagination constantly channeling her inner Buffy, it was only a matter a time before she started creating her own characters.

While she waits for her chance at a job as a ninja assassin, Nana works out her drama, passion and sass with fictional characters every bit as brazen and kick-butt as she thinks she is.

My Review

The Lost Boys…The Forgotten…

These are the six stories that I’ve been waiting for…desperate to understand if anything could help them regain their memories…curious if their pasts would reveal something they never wanted to remember…hopeful that they would be able to find  a new kind of life, acquiring new recollections and moments that will hopefully allow them to be who they are now regardless of what they had lost.

There are many variables that these men must contend with as they work to assimilate into their new lives; there are still those individuals who want to track them down to cause them further harm…government organizations who have an interest in what happened to them, hoping to exploit or use them in some way, and even though there are a group of people desperate to help the forgotten, these men need to work through a lot of things on their own…find their footing…find a way to move forward even when their past remains unknown.

In Memento Mori, readers get Jax’s story – the first one who was experimented on, and while it’s obvious, fairly early on, that Jax is not exactly the intense alpha male that readers may have become accustomed to in Lexi Blake’s stories; I appreciate the fact that he’s different…that he doesn’t resemble all of the other Masters and Mercenaries that we’ve been introduced to because he doesn’t even know the kind of man he was, so there’s limitless possibilities on who he can decide to be, and Blake allows Jax’s transformation to happen on his timeframe and how he chooses it to occur.

And while Jax is working on himself, he receives quite a bit of a help from a certain wilderness expert in Bliss, Colorado, and as River Lee helps Jax seek out any of his secrets that the mountains may hold, she also gives him peace and helps him to unearth parts of himself that he never knew were there.

I’m an avid reader of Lexi Blake’s books, which means that I absolutely love how she fluidly weaves past characters, past story lines, and past worlds together in the spinoff series of her Masters & Mercenaries’ series. Taggart’s role in the lives of the Forgotten is pivotal to these men’s recoveries, and it’s clear in Jax’s story that Taggart will not let these men down…he will not allow them to face anything on their own because he protects those who matter to him and it’s well known just how much Taggart and his team did to help free these men.

I adore Blake’s romantic suspense stories because she seamlessly combines humorous, dramatic, intense, and heartbreaking moments to illustrate who her characters are, what her characters are made of, and how these characters deal with the obstacles they face and the goals they want/need to achieve.

Jay and River’s story is a fantastic introduction to the Forgotten, and I’m sure as Blake takes readers further into the series that we will find out even more information about these men, what they suffered, and how they endured.

What’s a girl to do when a man who’s countless shades of wrong feels oh-so-right?

Ambitious book editor Asha Tate is a hopeless romantic. Despite her mediocre track record with men, she believes in swooning, sighing, and the everlasting love of true soul mates. Sure, sex is okay, but she’s not someone who’s ever been driven by her animal urge.

Until now.

When Asha stumbles upon the scorching hot Instagram feed of someone calling himself Professor Feelgood, she falls in lust for the first time. Not only is she left panting over the professor’s insane body, but his angst-filled poetry about losing his one true love speaks straight to her soul.

Desperately in need of a bestseller for her struggling publishing company, Asha knows the professor’s potential to sell to his millions of loyal followers could be the lifeline her bosses need. However, the ink is barely dry on a book deal before she realizes she’s made a terrible mistake. Sure, the professor is incredibly talented and sexier than any man has a right to be, but the man behind the persona isn’t at all who she pictured. In real life, he’s intense, arrogant and infuriating, and his uncanny ability to rub her the wrong way turns her dream project into a total nightmare.

Knowing that the professor is everything she doesn’t want in a man should help Asha ignore her occasional urges to mount him, but she quickly learns that explosive, unwanted chemistry can make even smart people do stupid things.

My Review

Just when Damien and Nikki feel like their life and their love couldn’t be more perfect, the past or should I say those from their pasts always seem to remind them that they’re not untouchable…that their mistakes might just have to be answered for and based on experience, these skeletons want to hit Damien and Nikki where it hurts the most, running smear campaigns or threatening to reveal their dirty laundry for the world to see and for two incredibly private people, like Damien and Nikki are, there’s nothing Damien won’t do to shield his wife and his kids from feeling the blowback from someone looking to benefit from Damien’s financial status.

But it seems that Damien, at times, doesn’t truly understand that his and Nikki’s passion and love stem from how connected they are – mind, body, and soul, which means that both of them have the ability to sense when something is wrong or there’s a secret between them, and in Please Me, Damien, once again, is trying to protect what’s his, but in the process, he’s shutting Nikki out and reminding her of the times where there were still secrets between them even after honesty/truth was promised.

Through all of Damien and Nikki’s ups and downs, their love, their vows, their bond may be tested, but it’s more than clear, it will never truly waiver because they are each other’s heart and soul, which means that they’ll always find their way through difficult situations together, even if it feels like they’re separated by insurmountable walls.

They’re Mr. and Mrs. Damien Stark and that’s what they will remain no matter who or what tries to destroy what they’ve built all these years together.

4 Poison Apples

Excerpt

I’ve just popped a cube of Wisconsin Cheddar into my mouth when my phone chimes, signaling a call from Damien. “Hey,” I say through a mouthful of cheese. “Are you in the car?”

“Actually, I’m stuck here. It’s been one of those days.”

“Oh.” Disappointment crashes over me, along with the fear that my plans for a long weekend are going to be swept away in a flood of work crises. I draw in a breath and catch Jamie’s eye, her expression sympathetic. “Well, Jamie’s here. She can watch the kids, and I could come stay the night at the Tower Apartment.” Stark International is based in Stark Tower, one of LA’s downtown high rises. Damien’s private office takes up half the top floor, and his—now our—private apartment takes up the other half of the space.

“That’s tempting, but no. I need…”

As he trails off, that knot of worry in my stomach starts to tighten. “What?” I whisper, hoping that now, finally, he’ll tell me what’s the matter.

“I need to deal with this.”

“Damien, please—”

“I’ll be home as soon as I can. I promise. I love you. Kiss the girls for me. And I’ll see you later tonight.”

I hesitate, waiting to hear those familiar words: Until then, imagine me, touching you. But there’s only silence, and I swallow rising tears. “I love you, too. Do you want to talk to La—” I begin, but he’s already clicked off.

I draw a breath and stare at my phone before lifting my head and meeting Jamie’s eyes.

“I’m sorry,” she says. “But honestly, Nicholas, the man pretty much runs the entire known universe. Of course there’s stuff on his mind.”

She’s right, and I draw in a breath, suck it up, and force myself into a good mood as we change into swimsuits, then take the kids onto the back patio.
