Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys cheap wine, mystery leggings, and baked feta. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW AND EXCERPT: Confessions: Priest by Ella Frank

Priest-SBPRBlogTour

Confessions: Priest, book three in the steamy contemporary MMM Confessions Series from Ella Frank, is available NOW!

Confessions-PRIEST-PRINT-FOR-WEB

I am complex.

My love is all-encompassing.

And when it comes to my heart, there is only one rule:

Don’t mess with what’s mine.

Until the age of seven, I was Joel Alexander Donovan, son of Jimmy.

The man who terrorized a town and made its citizens fear

the very ground he walked on. Including me,

the day I realized that ground ran red with blood.

At age eighteen, I became Priest.

A man without a past.

A man determined to right the wrongs of my father.

A man who never believed anyone could love the son of such a monster.

But then a thief stole my heart.

A sweetheart lit up my world.

And I forgot for a moment you should never turn your back on your enemy.

And thus begins a lesson to those who would seek to harm: Never underestimate what the Priest will do to protect the Princess and the Prick.

My Review

Since being introduced to Joel Priestley, the intensely complex attorney, he has always been a wildcard for me, mostly because there was so much about his past that readers weren’t privy to, keeping him a rather elusive character for much of the series up to this point, and even now, in the book where his confessions become centerstage, the man who Priest is and the life that he led before he married Julien and met Robbie is one who needed to be unraveled slowly in order to truly understand who he is at his core and why he’s chosen to live his life the way that he has.

In both fictitious stories and real life, it stands to reason that people’s pasts never stay buried, especially ones that haven’t been completely resolved, so it’s not surprising to me that Priest is forced to deal with what he thought he left behind, no longer able to shield his husband or his boyfriend from a past that is clearly flowing into his present. But Priest is a different man now, so even though he was
shaped by the sins of his father, he became his own man when he decided to become someone else…someone worthy of love…someone who protects what’s his at all costs and the two men who bring him joy and unconditional love are at the top of his list.

From the very beginning of their relationship, truth and honest has been extremely important to this trio of men, so Priest’s newest revelation is a point of contention for Robbie, but even though Robbie’s reaction is a bit princess-like, it also makes sense why he needs time to regroup and deal with the information in his own way and on his own timeline, even if Robbie’s isolation further exposes Priest’s guilt and exposes a fracture in a relationship that means everything to all three of them.

Because of the nature of Priest’s past and the inevitable confrontation that will at some point occur with his father, Priest’s story line has an edgier vibe to it…it’s not just about three men finding their way together; it’s about one man who has devoted his life to moving beyond his past and ensuring that his present is everything he fought to be and have and that most definitely includes the two men who own his heart.

It makes sense that the further readers get into the series and the more developed Julien, Priest, and Robbie’s relationship becomes that their physical intimacy becomes secondary to figuring out other aspects of their devotion to one another; it’s easy to see how easily these three men connect on a physical level…there really is no work to be done in that area so focusing on the emotional and soulful connections need to take precedence in order for all three of them to move forward, on the same page, and with the knowledge of just how good things are and can continue to be when it comes to their unique bond.

Even though readers have been provided with all three men’s confessions, there’s still more to their story…more to work through…more ways to grow together, and I’m so excited that Ella Frank isn’t stopping Julien, Priest, and Robbie’s story with Priest’s confessions and that she plans to give these three amazing men their epilogue…their ride off into the sunset in the way that they deserve, and based on all that the Priest, the Prick, and the Princess have endured and who they are together, it’s going to be one fantastic ride!

CHAPTER ONE

CONFESSION

My name is not Joel Priestley.

My name is Joel Alexander Donovan.

And a long time ago, I was taught that things

aren’t always what they appear to be—and neither are people.

JOEL PRIESTLEY, A.K.A Priest, sat behind the wheel of his Aston Martin with his hands at the ten and two positions and his seatbelt fastened. He’d been sitting like that for the past thirty minutes or so. Ever since he’d pulled the vehicle into its designated parking spot alongside his and Julien’s—his husband’s—black Range Rover.

Sinatra had been keeping him company, as Priest tried to block out the phone call he’d made back in his office to Henri. But no matter how loud he played the charismatic crooner, nothing seemed to lessen the impact of Henri’s words and the way they had made Priest’s stomach coil.

“Nice to know you can at least follow an order if it’s to keep those you love safe… Be careful; keep an eye out…”

And that was what he’d been doing for the past thirty minutes or so. Sitting in his car, with his eyes trained on the rearview and side mirrors, as his paranoia over what used to only exist in the shadows began to slowly creep back out into the light of day.

Priest gritted his teeth and reminded himself that Jimmy wasn’t out of prison just yet and likely wouldn’t be for some time. He wasn’t about to appear out of thin air to exact absolution for what he believed was Priest’s biggest crime—abandonment. But that didn’t mean Jimmy hadn’t reached out to the others to find him. To track down the son who had turned his back on his family if, and when, he walked free.

Priest cursed and slammed the heel of his palm against the steering wheel, then he reached for the seatbelt’s release, and as it retracted across his chest, he reached up and shoved it off his shoulder where it caught. As it snapped into place, Priest pulled the handle of the door and got out of the car. He needed to get upstairs. To get inside a locked lobby, where a security guard walked the halls, and his condo had a deadbolt on the front door. It was one of the main reasons he’d been interested in Logan’s place to begin with. The additional barriers between him and those he loved—and anyone who may want to hurt them.

Julien had already texted to let Priest know he and Robbie arrived home safely. But as of yet, Priest hadn’t heard anything from Robbie, their boyfriend. Not that he’d expected to. The last image Priest had of their princess was an ashen face and betrayal in those usually bright blue eyes, and Christ, Priest wished he could erase that picture from his mind.

The three of them had been making such headway lately. They had moved past the getting-to-know-you, comfortable stage of their relationship, and had been thisclose to slipping into that space where the heart and soul of the one whose body you were worshiping was coveted.

But that had all changed now. The truth about his father having wiped out any trust he may have built with Robbie, judging by the expression on his face before Priest had left the brewhouse.

All the joy, and all the happiness, the closeness the three of them had been reveling in, had been smothered by the dark cloud that descended on them, and Priest had a feeling it was going to take a lot of explaining on his behalf before they could get out from under it—if they ever could.

Priest jabbed the button of the garage elevator, and when the doors slid open, he ran his key fob over the panel and hit the floor button. He leaned against the back wall and shut his eyes, and as the elevator ascended, he wondered how he was going to explain all of this to Robbie.

He’d only ever had to do it once before. Only ever found one other he deemed important enough to share this side of himself with. And he’d been just as apprehensive, just as sick to his stomach, at the thought of revealing all to Julien, as he was heading up to face Robert Bianchi.

Priest walked down the hallway toward their condo like a man heading toward his execution—or the execution of their new relationship—and when he got to the front door, he paused before entering.

Scanning the hallway, he looked to his left, where their neighbor lived on the other side of the corridor, before he took a final glance back in the direction he’d come. Once he was satisfied there was no one about, he unlocked the door and headed inside.

The first thing he noticed upon entry was how quiet it was. Lately, when he’d arrived home from work, the TV was on and there was the sound of someone doing something or other in the living room or kitchen. But not this afternoon.

Right now, the place felt more like a library. The kind of space where you should tiptoe and whisper in case you offended whoever was inside—provided there was someone there to offend in the first place.

But that was just his paranoia creeping in again. Of course someone was inside—two someone’s, in fact. Julien had told him so, and when Priest stepped out of the short hallway, he spotted his husband immediately.

Julien was curled up on the couch with a blanket over his legs and his phone in hand, and the second Priest moved into view, Julien’s legs came out from under him and he got to his feet. He dropped the phone on the cushion beside him, and as the blanket fell from his lap, it crumpled to the soft rug without a sound.

Julien rushed around the couch and hurried over to Priest, and when he reached him, Julien took his face between his hands and pressed a hard kiss to his lips.

Mon Dieu, Joel,” Julien said. “I’ve been a mess worrying over you. I’m so glad you’re home.”

Priest wound his arms around Julien’s waist, anchoring himself to the man who understood him in ways Priest had never imagined possible. “You don’t know how much I needed to hear that.”

Julien trailed his fingers down the scruff on Priest’s cheek and frowned. “Was there really any doubt?”

Priest shut his eyes and let Julien soothe him in the way that only he could. His touch, his words, this man’s mere presence—they were all vital to Priest’s survival. Priest let go of Julien’s waist to cover the hand still cradling his cheek.

There were so many things he needed to say: “I’m sorry”or “You were right.I should’ve told Robert about this the second I found out.”But right then, all Priest could manage was: “There was no doubt. Not about you. Neverabout you.”

Julien’s eyes softened as Priest’s shifted over his husband’s shoulder to the closed door of their bedroom. “Is he still here?”

Oui.”

“I…” Priest paused as he searched for the words. “I wasn’t sure that he would be.”

“I wasn’t either,” Julien admitted, and when Priest locked eyes with him again, Julien added, “He’s been in there since we got home. Hasn’t said a word.”

“That was more than an hour ago.”

Julien nodded. “I know. But he made it very clear he wasn’t ready to talk about things yet.”

Not knowing what to say to that, Priest put his keys on the coffee table, and Julien placed a hand on his back.

“Listen, he’s processing right now. What he found out about Jimmy… It’s a lot, mon amour.”

“It’s more than that, Julien. You saw his face when he found out.”

Oui, I did. I also spoke to him in the car on the way home.”

“He thinks I lied to him. Doesn’t he?” When Julien didn’t reply, Priest ran a hand through his hair. “Fuck,” he said. “Fuck. I should’ve told him about all of this before he moved in.”

“And when should you have done that? At CRUSH? On our first date with him? Or maybe the second, when he had dinner here? I’m surethat would’ve made him feel right at home. There hasn’t been a good opportunity. You know that,” Julien reminded him, and touched his fingers to the sleeve of Priest’s jacket. “He just needs time to—”

“No,” Priest said, shaking his head. “Time gives people a chance to distort things. To make them doubt what they once believed. You and I know that better than anyone. I won’t have him doubting this. Doubting us, Julien. Not because of fucking Jimmy. I’m going to go and talk to Robert, and he’s going to listen, and then the three of us are going to sit down and discuss this.”

Something flashed in Julien’s expression, but instead of saying what was on his mind, he let go of Priest’s arm and said, “Okay.”

Priest narrowed his eyes in question, but Julien remained quiet. So Priest turned on his heel and headed toward their bedroom to track down their boyfriend and try to make things right again.

Love Online EXCERPT teaser

Needing a few seconds to prepare, I closed my eyes the moment I knew he was about to turn on the camera.

I don’t know why I was so afraid to see him. Maybe I was worried his looks would somehow change the way I viewed him. I hated that I’d even had that thought. I didn’t want to be unattracted to him physically because I was so very drawn to him in every other way. Shouldn’t those be the ways that mattered? I was scared I would somehow feel differently about him, and he deserved better than to be judged on his physical appearance.

“You can open your eyes,” he said.

My heart felt like it was pounding out of my chest.

Here goes.

One, two, three…

When I saw him right in front of me, my mouth fell open.

Oh.

Oh my.

Oh wow.

Big, glowing eyes. Perfect nose. Stubbled, angular jaw. Full lips. Strong arms. I just kept blinking because I couldn’t believe my eyes. He looked like a model or a movie star. A rush of insecurity hit me.

Is this a joke?

No, it wasn’t.

It was really him.

Ryder.

Oh my God.

The lust consuming me made me feel almost guilty. But I was so damn relieved that he was truly as beautiful on the outside as I believed him to be on the inside. He was almost too beautiful, if there were such a thing.

He looked nothing like the vague image I’d formed in my head, which was sort of like a silhouette without a clear face but with a brown beard, kind of like a hipster. Not sure why I’d pictured him like that. It was kind of funny how off base I was. This was not what I’d been expecting. Because how could someone so thoughtful, attentive, creative, and considerate be so strikingly handsome that he made me speechless? And it was clear now that his sexy voice absolutely fit him.

“You’re…” I hesitated.

“Oh shit.” He laughed. “What are you thinking?”

“No. No, no, no. Nothing bad at all. I just don’t even know how to articulate it. You’re…beautiful, Ryder. Absolutely beautiful.”

He let out a breath. “And you’re…handsome, Eden. Very handsome.” His impish grin was so sexy.

I chuckled. “I know beautiful is an odd term for a man, but you are. All this time you’ve been hiding from me when you’re drop-dead gorgeous. Why?”

“You really did think I was ashamed of my looks, huh?”

“Well, I’d be lying if I said that didn’t cross my mind. I wondered if there was something you were self-conscious about. That always made me a little sad. But it never mattered to me, because I’ve been connecting with you on a deeper level.”

“I think that’s exactly why I didn’t want to change things,” he said. “Why fix something if it ain’t broken?” When I fell silent, he asked, “What are you thinking?”

A nervous energy overtook me. “Nothing. I’m…still just taking you in.”

“Okay. Let me know when you’re done so I can stop sucking in my abs.”

Love Online Ebook

Synopsis

From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new, sexy STANDALONE novel.

We met in the least likely of places. It started out innocently enough. I was “ScreenGod” and she was “Montana,” but of course, those weren’t our actual names, just the virtual cloaks we hid behind.

Logging in at night and talking to her was my escape—my sanctuary.

Her real name was Eden, I’d soon come to find out.

From the first time we connected online, I found myself transfixed.

She was an addiction.

At first, we knew nothing about each other’s real identities…and she was adamant that we keep things that way. Anonymity had no effect on our unstoppable chemistry, though. If anything, it allowed us to open up even more in ways we may not have otherwise.

Eden was funny, intelligent, gorgeous—everything I’d ever wanted in a woman.

But I couldn’t really have her.

I had accepted things would have to stay the way they were—until the day I found a clue that led me straight to her.

So I took a chance.

And that was when our love story really began.

REVIEW AND EXCERPT TOUR: BRING DOWN THE STARS by Emma Scott

I fell for Connor Drake. I didn’t want to; I fought against it, but I fell in love with him anyway. With his words. With his poetry. With him. The gentleness and beauty of his soul that speaks directly to mine. He writes as if he can feel my heart, hear its cadence and compose the exact right lyrics to accompany every beat and flow.

I’m in love with Connor…so why do I feel an inexplicable pull to his best friend, Weston? Grouchy, sullen, brooding Weston Turner, who could cut you down with a look. Fiercely intelligent with a razor sharp wit and acid tongue, he’s the exact opposite of Connor in every way, and yet there’s electricity in the air between us. The thorny barbs Weston wraps around himself can’t keep me away.

But the more time I spend with these men, the more tangled and confused my emotions become. When they both sign up for the Army Reserves during a time of increasing strife in the Middle East, I fear I’ll never unravel my own heart that sometimes feels as if it will tear straight down the middle…for both of them.

My Review

I’m an English teacher, so I’m more than familiar with the story of Cyrano de Bergerac and I’ve seen the movie adaptation, Roxanne, a number of times, and every time I’ve read or watched this love triangle play out, I’ve always felt like there was never a question as to whose souls spoke to each other the deepest…whose hearts beat in unison…whose conversations meant the most, and while my observations still seem to apply to Emma Scott’s Bring Down the Stars, the way that Scott presents Autumn, Connor, and Weston’s story greatly complicates my views and makes me question who exactly deserves to win Autumn’s heart because both men have their strengths and their weaknesses and the fact that Connor and Weston are best friends, and, for whatever reason, that Weston believes he owes Connor places Connor in the forefront and Weston in the background, playing a role that he never wanted to play but now is so entwined in it that there is no way to untether himself from the words he strings together that Connor claim as his own because regardless of the fact that Autumn believes they are another man’s confessions, they’re still Weston’s truths, spoken from his heart.

Autumn Caldwell is not a woman who cares about social status or how much money her friends or potential suitors make; she prefers the company of likeminded individuals but she’s also unafraid to share her convictions with those who may disagree and she’s steadfast in expressing herself and her beliefs regardless of the backlash that may come her way. She’s a passionate woman who cares deeply about humanity and wants to help in whatever ways possible to ensure that life is as good as it can be for the world as a whole.

Connor Drake is every girl’s fantasy man; they can’t help but want to be in his presence because he puts people at ease and makes them feel welcomed and protected. But Connor is not good at words; in fact, he seems to overthink things in a way that doesn’t allow him to express himself, so it makes sense that he would look to Weston for help and even though it’s clear to readers that it’s killing Weston to help Connor find his footing with Autumn because we get chapters through Weston’s perspective, but Connor remains oblivious to his best friend’s shattered heart because Weston makes it that way because Weston feels he owes Connor and Connor’s family and willingly pays that debt by allowing Connor to get the girl of his dreams, even if that same girl is who Weston wants as well.

Weston is quite the contradiction…a paradoxical man who wields words like weapons but also as healers amidst the verbal wounds he inflicts on himself and others. There’s a depth to Weston that very few people see, because he doesn’t allow anyone through his carefully constructed barrier. Weston’s professor characterizes Weston best when he describes Weston as “…a young man with deep fires burning within and a cold wall around him.”  He continues, “a guy with poetry in his blood…but he keeps his blood from spilling where anyone can see. He sits in the back. Doesn’t talk. All he while, words pile up inside. And to a mind and heart like his, all that emotion is hard to take. It’s too much. Dangerous. It hurts.” This instructor truly SEES Weston but that’s because Weston’s words are showcased in this class and Weston allows his soul to be laid bare because it’s one of the only times he’s honest, open, and real.

There’s nothing more angsty than unrequited love, especially when the heroine is clearly conflicted by her feelings for two very different men, and as Autumn, Connor, and Weston struggle to find their way in life, in friendship, and in love, Emma Scott narrates their path and illustrates just how powerful emotions and words are and why individuals do what they do for those they care for even if it means giving up the very thing or person they want the most.

I’m a fairly new reader to the magical worlds that Emma Scott creates with her powerful and meaningful storytelling, but I have to say that I’ve learned rather quickly that she’s an amazing writer – one who strings together words in order for her readers to understand what’s at stake for her characters and how their decisions and actions can affect all those involved in their lives, and with the events that occur at the end of Bring Down the Stars, the lives and hearts affected heading into the final part of these characters’ story are sure to leave readers breathless while still begging for more.

I took the cement stairs into the library and entered the cool, hushed confines of the main reading room. None of the long mahogany desks with green-shaded lamps were empty. One of the university clubs had taken over two-thirds of the space. The rest of the tables were filled with students like me, trying to get a head start their course load.

I finally found an empty seat at the end of a table, opposite a blond guy engrossed in reading. His open backpack spilled books and papers into what I hoped could be my table territory.

“Excuse me,” I whispered. “Can I…?”

He looked up, his expression vaguely hostile. Piercing blue-green eyes set in a stunningly handsome, if angular, face met mine. High cheekbones, sharp chin and long straight nose. He looked chiseled out of smooth stone at first glance, then his features softened for a moment as his gaze swept over me. Something like recognition lit up his eyes, and I could see the gears of his brain turning as he studied, analyzed, and then came to a conclusion. Not a good one, I guessed, because his expression hardened again.

“Yeah, sure,” he muttered. He stood up, leaning his tall, slender frame over the table to corral the books back into his pack.

“Thanks,” I said, thinking if he wasn’t a basketball player or a runner, he was a model.

All right, girl, get a grip.

I sat, cracked my textbook and settled in to read. I wasn’t through two pages when the words blurred to nonsensical gibberish and my skin prickled with the sensation of being watched.

I glanced up, straight into the ocean eyes of the guy across from me. A million thoughts swirled in their soft depths before they quickly glanced down. He slouched lower in his chair, disappearing behind his book—the collected poems of Walt Whitman. Part of me wanted to melt. Good lord, a hot guy reading poetry? I was only human.

And this is how you wound up with a broken heart in the first place.

I must’ve been frowning at the book because the guy held it up and said, “Not a fan?”

I blinked back to reality. “No,” I said. “I mean, yes. I love Whitman. And poetry in general. I just… Never mind.”

He regarded me a long moment, then slowly closed Whitman and picked up Atlas Shrugged from his short stack of books.

“Ugh, that’s even worse,” I muttered without thinking, and then shook my head. “God, sorry, I left my filter at home. Don’t listen to me.”

His lip curled. “Is there anything in my collection you approve of?”

A hot, smart asshole, I thought. Game on.

“Sorry,” I said. “I’m not in a good mood today and it’s making me forget my manners. I’ll leave you to read your capitalist propaganda in peace.”

The guy’s eyebrows shot up, disappearing under the blond hair that fell across his brow. “Not a fan of Rand either?” He smirked knowingly. “No, of course you aren’t.”

My blood heated at his flippant tone. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

The guy nodded at my textbook—Global Responsibility and the Third-World Hunger Epidemic—and shrugged, as if that answered everything.

“Oh.” I frowned. “Well… yes. I mean, Rand’s point of view is purely capitalist and mine isn’t. Not by a long shot.”

The student sitting to my right exchanged glances with the girl sitting across from him. Then both packed up their books and left.

“We’re being disruptive,” I said to my across-table neighbor. “We need to stop talking now.”

He leaned back in his chair, his eyes intent on me. “So what’s your point of view?”

“My what?”

“You said your point of view isn’t capitalist.” He raised a brow. “So what is it?”

“Humanist, I suppose. Since you asked. I think everyone, regardless of race, creed, income-level, or sex should be granted the same shot as anyone else.” I raised a brow at him. “But you don’t?”

“Are you asking me or telling me?” he said with a slight chuckle. “Since we’re tossing labels around, I’m a realist.” He held up his book. “And not a fan of Rand either.”

“You’re not?” I leaned back too, crossing my arms. “Are you just messing with me or what?”

“Maybe,” he said. “What do you care what I think anyway?”

My mouth fell slack. “I don’t. Thanks for reminding me.”

“No problem.”

“Wow, you’re rude.”

“That’s the word on the street.”

“I can see why.” I lifted my own book up to signal conversation over, but my eyes wouldn’t focus. I could feel the hum of his presence like a field of electrical wires, getting under my skin and infiltrating my thoughts. The buzz went beyond distraction. It felt like a challenge had been laid down.

And I never walked away from a challenge.

I lowered my book to see the guy’s glance hide behind his book again.

“Well?” I demanded.

“Well what?”

Why are you watching me?

“Why are you reading Ayn Rand if you don’t like her either?”

“Required reading for an English Lit minor.”

“And your major? Let me guess, pre-law.”

“God, no,” he said.

I raised my eyebrows but he offered nothing more. “Are you going to make me run through Amherst’s list of majors until I guess which one is yours?”

“Yes,” he said. “Alphabetically, please.”

A laugh burst out of me against my will, and the guy almost smiled. Every one of his hard angles softened.

“Economics,” he said. “But I don’t know what I’m doing with it.”

“That feels like the most honest thing you’ve said to me so far,” I said.

“And that’s important to you?”

“Yes,” I said, my laughter dying away as I remembered Mark and that girl, naked in the bed I’d slept in just the night before. “Honesty is very important.”

He lifted one shoulder.

“You don’t agree?” I asked.

“Being honest is sometimes mistaken for being rude.”

“You must be really honest,” I said.

Again, he almost smiled. “Must be.”

Satisfied that I’d held my own against this beautiful but hostile member of the opposite sex, I went back to my book…for eight entire seconds before my skin started prickling again. The electric hum of his attention was impossible to ignore.

When I looked up this time, he didn’t look away but cleared his throat.

“I’m Weston Turner.”

My Review

I love when my favorite authors introduce readers to new characters and fresh story lines in a brand new series, and in Kristen Proby’s All The Way, we meet Finn Cavanaugh and London Watson in book one of her Romancing Manhattan series, and despite the heartbreaking reason for their initial interaction, the next time they cross paths on Martha’s Vineyard, London finds more than just her leg healing, and as she spends more and more time with Finn, he helps her to move forward and devotes himself to loving and protecting her with everything that he is.

Readers bear witness to every part of Finn and London’s burgeoning relationship, and because Proby provides readers with both characters’ perspectives, we gain much needed insight into how Finn and London feel about each other and what they’re ready to do in order to stay a part of one another’s life regardless of where London’s career may take her/them.

I do have to say that I found London’s reactions to some of the things Finn was doing for her…for them a little off-putting. It’s more than clear that London’s an independent woman – one who makes her own money, has her own mind, and does what she wants when she wants to, but in an actual relationship, she doesn’t seem to understand that it’s a partnership and while Finn does have some issues with communicating with her, it’s not just about her anymore and every time she has an attitude with Finn or takes exception to what he’s trying to do for her, I couldn’t help but find her a bit selfish as well as irritating. But Finn and London do seem to find a middle ground, which means that the love that’s developed between them should be able to withstand their bouts of miscommunication and squelch any doubts I may have of these two making it as a couple.

Given the fact that readers have already been introduced to the other two heroes of the series, I can’t wait to see the women Proby puts in their pathways to not only shake up their lives but also provide them with everything these two men never knew they wanted and perhaps even needed.

Bring on Book 2.

She spent countless hours in workshops, and more mornings than she can count up before the dawn so she could write before going to work. She submitted many manuscripts to agents and editors alike, but was always told no. In the summer of 2012, the self-publishing scene was new and thriving, and Kristen had one goal: to publish just one book. It was something she longed to cross off of her bucket list.

Not only did she publish one book, she’s since published close to thirty titles, many of which have hit the USA Today, New York Times and Wall Street Journal Bestsellers lists. She continues to self publish, best known for her With Me In Seattle and Boudreaux series, and is also proud to work with William Morrow, a division of HarperCollins, with the Fusion Series.

My Review

Love at first heist?

All it takes for ex-con, Nick Norton, a man focused on going legit and leaving his thievery behind because he can’t afford to go down that illegal road again, is the opportunity to watch the precision in which Stella Peretti pulls off a heist to fall for the sassy leader of the Shimmy Shimmy Bangs – a group of master jewel thieves.

Despite the mutual attraction between Nick and Stella, though, it’s unclear if Nick is able to catch and keep Stella’s heart because before she goes legit, there’s one more heist to pull off and if they get caught, it won’t just cost them their freedom but each other.

I love the premise of Nick and Stella’s story and Stella’s reasons for doing what she does makes readers want her crew to be successful at breaking the law and giving the payoffs to those who need it. The fact that readers are privy to both Nick and Stella’s perspectives adds a great deal to the storyline because their internal ramblings prove how they feel about each other and what they could lose if they’re caught red handed. Stella is a vibrant character whose sass and independence makes her a force to be reckoned with, but it’s more than clear as the story continues that Nick can handle Stella just fine because his quick and sneaky hands know exactly how to take care of and please his little thief’s heart and body.

I do have to say, though, that Priscilla, the dachshund, definitely is the scene stealer of the story; the times she’s in the story are beyond hilarious as well as adorable, and because I’m a dog lover, I just couldn’t get enough of her.

The fact that Nicola Rendell finds a way to make a feel good and entertaining love story about a group of thieves definitely illustrates her storytelling ability, and even though I would have liked to have seen a bit more angst and dramatic antics occur throughout the book, I still enjoyed how everything went down between the main characters and the sticky situations they found themselves in as they get in deeper with one another and plan one last heist to make things easier on themselves when they go legit.

Excerpt

“Niiiiiiick!” came her voice, more of a growl that an actual word. “Get me out of here. My legs are going numb!”

To the bathroom I went, where I was met not only with Stella’s pinch-worthy ass in the window, but also an explosion of towels and makeup, shampoos and lotions, on every flat surface, and all over the floor. Dozens of makeup brushes poked out of an old coffee can by the sink, which was encrusted with jewels like Stella’s phone.

Stella had managed to tangle her legs up with toilet paper like the back end of a sloppily wrapped mummy, so I pulled that off her first. She’d also gotten her belt loop hooked over the lock on the window, so I unhooked that too.

But I didn’t pull her out quite yet, because her ass was just too hot to ignore. She was still in the same jeans she’d been wearing last night, and I took the chance to run my hand up the back of one thigh. I leaned down, and gave her a kiss on the small of her back. Her body went limp in the window, and she let out a moan. Once I’d had my fix, I hooked my arm underneath her hips and gave her a tug. I absolutely loved the way her skin felt next to mine, especially like this, when she was way too out of her element to feel self-conscious. The muscles of her stomach weren’t flexed, and I felt the soft curves and lines like she hadn’t let me feel them before. The narrow strip of skin where her T-shirt had ridden up made all those cliché terms make sense.

Soft as silk.
Sweet as cream.
Fucking heaven.

My Review

It’s been awhile since I’ve read a story by Jennifer Probst, so when I read the blurb for The Charm of You, a romantic comedy with heart, I knew I needed to read it, and even though it was a bit too predictable, I enjoyed Presley and Nolan’s story and could picture it being told on the big screen.

Through Jennifer Probst’s characterization of Presley, we receive a clear perception of the awkward college student Presley was and the heartbreak she endured when one of the most important nights of her life turns into a humiliating experience; we see the confident CEO, sharp-minded woman Presley becomes when she follows her dreams, embraces her passion for the written word and surrounds herself with a small group of like-minded and dynamic woman who share Presley’s vision of success, but the version of Presley who I enjoyed the most, even though she wasn’t supposed to show this side of herself in front of Nolan, was the one who let down her walls and was not the seductress planning revenge, but she was the honest and open girl whose wit and snark as well as her easy going personality made Nolan want her even more.

The image of Nolan that readers receive outside of the college flashbacks is nothing like the man that Presley remembers, which is why I’m glad Probst allowed us inside Nolan’s head; it adds a layer to the story line and makes readers feel like there’s more to their past than either of them know, so when Presley and Nolan cross paths almost 10 years later, it’s understandable that Presley needs closure when it comes to what went down between them in order to prove to herself that she’s over Nolan and how he made her feel, but her plan for revenge and how she wants to play this game with Nolan seems to fade away when Presley interacts with him, which will make readers question their past and what it means for their future.

As Probst takes readers back to the college versions of Presley Cabot and Nolan Banks and lays out the night that not only changed everything between them but also served as a lesson to Presley and fueled her desire to be in total control of her own success and self-perception, it’s made beyond clear just how much that night broke her, but, in my opinion, what it also does is allow readers to understand the underlying circumstances of that event and how there’s another side to that night and Presley and Nolan’s story that will alter EVERYTHING between the older versions of them both.

After I finished reading Jennifer Probst’s newest release, The Charm of You, I reveled in the female empowerment that drove Presley and her friends to reach the level of success they did as well as the close bond these women formed when they decided to believe in one another and become everything they wanted to be and then some. What’s also made clear is how some people struggle with how they perceive themselves and allow others to tear them down, resulting in an unfulfilled life and requiring a complete change of perception in order to be in the present instead of dwelling on the past.

There’s several powerful messages in Presley and Nolan’s story, and the way Probst laid out the storyline, offering a continuum of flashbacks amidst the characters’ present interactions allows readers to completely understand the reasons behind Presley’s actions and her need to put Nolan in his place once and for all.

4 Poison Apples

Excerpt

She’d known all along he’d lied about his identity in order to secure this appointment. Admiration flowed through him, along with a strange punch in his gut that urged him closer. The spicy scent of orange blossoms and clove filled the air, making him want to breathe deeper. “How did you know?” he asked, stopping on the opposite side of the monstrous espresso structure that held two oversized monitors, dozens of papers, and a toppling pile of books. “I thought I covered my tracks nicely.”

She gave a half shrug and reached for her Starbucks cup, seemingly already bored with his conversation. “You’re predictable.”

Male pride stung, he still couldn’t help laughing. Why did he have to be attracted to a woman who gave him shit? Would be so much easier to find a more complacent partner for an affair. Unfortunately, Nolan knew it was way too late for him. He was officially smitten. “Then I’ll have to up my game.”

Another shrug. “Maybe you have no game left.” She sipped her coffee and studied him, those stunning eyes shielding her secrets. He ached to know every detail about this woman, but knew he’d have his work cut out for him.

“Come to lunch with me and find out.”

She tilted her head. Tapped her index finger again those bee stung lips as if considering. “Why?”

Her question delighted him. “Because the moment you walked into my brewery I haven’t been able to get you off my mind.”

“How sweet.” She fluttered her lashes. “Too bad I forgot you the moment I walked out of your brewery.”

He dropped into the chair opposite the massive desk and hooked his foot over his knee. He made no attempt to hide his naked admiration for those amazing legs or the brazen way she challenged him to go and try. Her foot flexed, lifting the spiked heel, and those sleek muscles clenched under golden skin. His dick practically wept and got strangled in his jeans. “Ouch. What if I confessed you were the first woman in a long while to intrigue me?”

“Yeah? What intrigues you so much?”

He warmed up to the topic. “Besides your rapier wit, and superior intelligence? Your eyes. When I look into your eyes, I seem to lose track of time. I don’t want to be anywhere else.”

Was it possible she actually looked bored with his compliment? She gave a long-suffering sigh, regarding him like he was mentally challenged. “Please tell me you have better things in your arsenal. And you better upgrade from that Peter Gabriel song because it’s been overdone. I spend every Saturday with a personal trainer who makes me throw up for fun, so I really don’t want to hear about my pretty eyes or wit. Go ahead and bring it. Tell me I have a slamming body and get creative, dude, or I’m throwing you out and you won’t get another chance to bang me.”

God, she was magnificent.

A startling new vision of paranormal romance: When a human ventures into the world of vampires—a decadent milieu of blood-bonds and betrayal—she discovers that not all is what it seems.

For Reyna Carpenter, giving up her body isn’t a choice. It’s survival.

In a civilization laid waste by poverty and desperation, Reyna accepts a high-paying position with the wealthy and hungry vampire elite. Her new job is as the live-in blood escort for the intimidating, demanding, and devilishly handsome Beckham Anderson. He’s everything she expected from a vampire, except for one thing—he won’t feed off her.

Reyna soon discovers that behind Beckham’s brooding, wicked façade lies a unique and complex man. And that, in a dark and divided world, she is more valuable than she ever would have believed.

For with each passing night, Reyna can’t shake the sensation that it’s Beckham who’s afraid of her.

Note: Reyna and Beckham’s story continues in Blood Match.
