My Review

Dear Lauren Blakely,

I’m sure while you were writing Andrew and Holland’s story that you felt a wide range of emotions, not only for what your characters were going through but also perhaps due to an array of memories of what you and those closest to you have had to deal with when it comes to grief, depression, loss, and loneliness, death, and cancer. These are not easy subjects to discuss or explore, but I can assure you that they desperately need to be; because if society talked openly about these topics then perhaps people could breathe easier…feel more comfortable to share their pain and their thoughts with others to prove just how alike they are and how their hearts struggle and break just like everyone else’s do.

I have firsthand experience with what cancer, death, and grief can do to a family; I live with its effects still, almost on a daily basis, and it’s heartbreaking and emotionally draining, but it helps to know that I’m not alone in this fight or in these feelings and I gain strength from knowing that others stand beside me.

Andrew and Holland’s feelings for one another resonate from the pages of Unbreak My Heart, but so do their individual dreams and goals, and while, at times, they find themselves off balance, contemplating what their next moves should be and how they’ll fit into each other’s lives, they slowly find their way…find the path that’s meant for each of them alone as well as the one that will allow them to finally get it right, find a balance, and be together in every way possible.

Another valuable lesson that Unbreak My Heart teaches readers is that life is not easy and people can’t control other people’s actions, which sometimes means that they must deal with things that they never wanted to endure, but that doesn’t mean that life stops…that love stops…it just means that it needs to be handled in a way that allows forward movement, even if there are set backs and it almost feels impossible.

What’s most intriguing and worthwhile about this story is how Andrew learns to live…learns to accept the circumstances that he’s in…learns to forgive himself and others for past misdeeds because in the grand scheme of things, focusing on regrets and painful moments forces Andrew to simply exist when he’s meant to flourish and to enjoy life’s precious moments.

While readers may be used to and adore your romantic comedies, I’m so grateful for this story…for these characters…for your ability to tell, what has to be one of the most profound love stories that I’ve read in a long time, because it’s a love that has multiple categories and layers – love of self…love of family…love of friends…and the deepest love that can be felt between two people despite time apart and the struggles that occur.

Some readers may feel that a heart cannot be unbroken…that once it’s fractured, it’s impossible to heal or be whole again, but through Andrew and Holland’s story, it’s clear that a heart most definitely can be repaired, and while all of its pieces may not fit into their old places, a new overall structure can be created, solidifying all parts, perhaps bending some in order to fit, but leaving not a single piece completely broken.

Thank you for telling Andrew and Holland’s story…for having the courage to write something that your readers may feel is too different from what they’ve come to expect from you because this book is a beautiful reminder to live every moment of every day in the best way possible because despite life’s difficulties, it offers limitless opportunities to grow, to love, and to cherish all that life alters.

She inches her hand across the counter just a little bit closer, and that hand, I want to grab it and hold on. I glance at our fingers, so close all it would take is one of us giving an inch.

He comes for me then, dark and dangerous and utterly mesmeric. “Take it off.”

I stare at him in shock.

“Take off that dress, Eve, or so help me god I’ll rip it from your body.”

His words are like liquid fire to my core. I stagger away from him so he can’t see my naked lust, so he can’t exploit and revel in what he does to me. “Apologize first,” I gasp, trying to compose myself. Sordid images keep invading my mind. I want every single, glorious inch of him on me and in me.

He’s barely two meters away and closing in fast. “I never apologize to anyone, my angel, you know that.”

My Review

Duty or Love…

As the newly crowned Queen of England, Adeline Lockhart has an overwhelming amount of pressure on her shoulders and because of her title, sacrifices have to be made; because despite her position, Queen Adeline still answers to her people, to her advisers, and, in some ways, to the world as a whole, and with all eyes on her, tough choices have to be made and what that means for her personal life…for the man who owns her heart just might be her undoing.

Adeline’s forbidden romance with Josh Jamieson becomes even more complicated, making the possibility of their relationship continuing, let alone, lasting a significant point of contention, but Adeline’s saving grace is the fact that Josh refuses to lose the best thing that’s ever happened to him, which means that regardless of what stands in Josh’s way, he’ll work to prove his worth, his intelligence, his love to the only person that matters – His True Queen.

I have to say that I was surprised by the length of Her True Queen, and I worried that the conflicts would be drawn out and the drama overdone, but I should have never doubted Jodi Ellen Malpas’ storytelling because every word on every page matters; they drive the story forward and truly illustrate the position that Adeline and Josh find themselves in, as both individuals and as a couple, and while Josh’s first instinct is to protect Adeline, she more than proves that what she needs most from him is his love, which she’s had since the beginning of this duet.

I confess…sometimes the angst really did a number on my heart and my head; Adeline was doing everything in her power to meet the demands placed upon her while still finding time for herself, but her title seems to monopolize and manipulate anything that has to do with Adeline personally, which only further reinforces the idea that as Queen, she’s beholden to her people and must concentrate on her duties, seemingly losing any self-identity she once had.

There are so many secrets revealed and betrayals uncovered that it almost seems impossible for Adeline to endure, but while she seemed to buckle, at times, she more than epitomizes the true qualities of a queen, refusing to cower or kneel to anyone except the man who owns her heart.

Queen Adeline deserves her title, BUT she also deserves the man she wants to stand beside her, and even though these two ideas seem quite contradictory given her position and the fact that there are so many obstacles and sabotagers to overcome in order to achieve both outcomes, if anyone can do it, it’s Adeline and Josh…just be prepared for Jodi Ellen Malpas to put her hero and heroine as well as her readers through one twisty, angsty, extremely complicated journey to get to the end game, but let me tell you, it’s so worth it, even if I felt like my heart would never be whole again.

“You’re lying to me.” Josh shouts. “You’re lying to yourself. You’re lying to every single person in this fuckin’ world.” He stomps forward, and I blindly stumble back, catching my foot on a stray branch. I lose my footing and fall to my arse in a pile of dry leaves.

I don’t yelp because it doesn’t hurt—I’m numb to everything except Josh—but I do curse to high heaven, further cementing Josh’s claim that I have a vulgar mouth. “God damn it.” With my palms splattered on the muddy ground behind me, my knees bent, I look up at the man looming over me. “This is all your fault.”

“I take full responsibility,” He says. “For everything.”

Everything? “Like what?”

“Your fall. My feelings.” Josh offers his hand, but I ignore it, getting myself to my feet and brushing myself down of dry leaves. “For your feelings,” he finishes softly.

My hands falter midway down my jodhpurs. “I do not have any feelings,” I grate, ignoring the unrelenting…feelings. The warmth, the disappearance of my woes, the heady sensations of want manifesting within me. Me. Him. The potent cocktail of chemistry we create, just being in each other’s presence. The woodland surrounding us is drenched in it. The atmosphere is thick.

I glance up when a few moments have passed, silent moments, and meet his eyes. The amber swirl of desire sparkles madly. My heart kicks. He licks his lips, and I follow the path of his tongue from one corner of his mouth to the other. “Stop,” I whisper, to who I don’t know. Him? Me?

My hands come up to my head, my fingertips pushing into my temples, as if I’m trying to force every reason why this can’t happen to the front of my mind. I look for my father’s words, but I find other words instead.

You will be ripped apart. Eddie will be ripped apart. Your father’s and brother’s memory with be tarnished.

But…I fell so madly in love with a man, and now I am being forced to disregard that. Can I? Should I?

I swivel on my boots and run. I can’t trust my head to talk reason, can’t promise I’ll even listen to my reason if I find it, so I’m depending on my legs to take me away as quickly as they can.

“No thumbs down,” he growls, snatching my wrist and yanking me to a stop, spinning me to face him. My face is grabbed with one brutal hand, and his mouth is quickly on mine. He’s gone low, way below the belt, and worse still, we both know it will work. My universe seems to align, positive and negative working together, our lips glued by an invisible, highly powerful force. Then I feel his tongue sweep through my mouth and explosions of the most calming kind erupt in my soul. My keen hands find his hair and force him closer, our kiss crazed and messy, but so utterly calming and immaculate. I let him guide my backward steps, I let him spin me away from him, and I let him thrust me up against a tree trunk.

The scratchiness of the bark on my forehead doesn’t faze me. I’m too blindsided by the reminder of what we share. Hips pushed into my arse, his wet mouth by my cheek, Josh holds me tightly. Possessively. Like he owns me. And I don’t care. He’s the only thing in this world I don’t mind controlling me.

He reaches to my hips and slowly draws my jodhpurs over my backside. His lazy approach could be mistaken for giving me time to deny him. It’s not. He’s merely prolonging my agony. I want him so badly, and he knows it. His hand on my arse. His mouth all over me.

Bringing my arms up to the tree, I rest my head on them to lessen the risk of grazing my head when he strikes me.

As is always the way when Josh tans my backside, I don’t cry out in pain, but rather moan my way through it, being carried to another world. A world where I am not me, but just his.
