About AS DUST DANCES

Once upon a time Skylar Finch was the lead singer of a hugely successful American pop-rock band. But fame made her miserable. When years of living a lie suddenly ended in tragedy, Skylar fell off the map.

Eighteen months later she’s sleeping in a tent in a cemetery in Glasgow, making just enough money to eat by busking on the streets. She manages to avoid recognition, but not the attention of one of Glasgow’s ambitious A&R executives.

Killian O’Dea works at Skyscraper Records, Scotland’s most successful record label. Raised by his uncle and owner of the label, Killian’s upbringing would have been devoid of affection entirely if it wasn’t for his loving sister. Killian is unflinchingly determined to bring the label more success than ever, and the young homeless woman who busks on Buchanan Street is going to help him do that. Her music speaks to him in a way he refuses to over-analyze. All he knows is that if it can touch his dark soul, it’ll set everyone else’s alight.

Skylar makes it clear that she doesn’t want to sign with him. But when she experiences the dangerous reality of a woman sleeping rough, Skylar has no one else but Killian to turn to. An undeniable connection forms between them. But Skylar doesn’t want the career Killian is trying to forge for her, and when her past comes back to haunt her Killian will be faced with a decision that could ruin him. He must either free Skylar from his selfish machinations and destroy everything he’s ever worked for, or lose a woman who has come to mean more to him than he ever thought possible…

My Review

Boy have I’ve missed how Samantha Young uses her story’s setting of Scotland to illicit just as many emotions as the characters themselves, and due to the heroine’s need to flee her old life and leave everything she once was behind, readers see a much different side of Scotland than we’re used to picturing, but in illustrating the circumstances that Young’s heroine finds herself in, it proves just how desperate Skylar Finch is to never go back to who and what she was…from a highly successful lead singer to a homeless woman who busks in order to survive.

Music plays an extremely important role in both Skylar Finch and Killian O’Dea’s life; it’s how they make money…it’s how they prove their worth, but while they are passionate about the same thing, what they want to achieve with it is drastically different, and it’s those differences that separate them at the beginning of As Dust Dances and continues to divide them as their feelings for one another grow, which means that while one aspect of their connection flourishes, their varying purposes and the outside forces that surround them wreak havoc and stall Skylar and Killian’s progress on a number of personal and professional fronts.

There are so many layers to both of the main characters that the plot line slowly reveals the whys and the hows of their life, but because there’s so much to understand about Skylar and Killian, the presentation of those facts need to be dispersed in small amounts because delivering everything there is to know about them in one chunk would be too overwhelming and not easily grasped, which means the technique that Young uses, while a bit frustrating, is the best approach, and it’s one that provides answers to the multitude of questions that surround the characters’ lives.

Through Skylar’s lyric, she’s able to describe her feelings in such vivid ways and it’s her words that help readers understand her heartbreak…her losses…her need for a new beginning…her reasons for forgetting who she once was. Her original music allows her to be real even while she’s attempting to fake who she is as she’s busking on the streets of Glasgow.

Because Killian seems so closed-off and unreadable, it’s difficult to gauge what he truly wants and needs from Skylar…do his feelings for her have more to do with what she can help him to achieve or is the fact that she can assist his record label an added bonus to what he personally shares with her? There’s not any easy answer to this question, which made me constantly wonder what Killian’s end game is and what would happen when everything runs its course and all that’s left is the raw truth that neither Killian nor Skylar necessarily wanted to share.

Between the backdrop of Scotland, the relationship that the main characters have with the music industry, and the slow burn romance that makes everything that much more complicated, readers can’t help but be invested in Skylar and Killian’s story and feel every emotion that drives Skylar’s life. I felt her heartbreak…her pain…her sadness…her anger and as much as I wanted her to embrace and consolidate the old and new versions of herself, I understood her decisions and her attitude towards Killian when they first meet and what happens when he won’t stop pursuing her and it’s an experience that left me an emotional but hopeful mess.

When I finished, O’Dea was sitting on the chair, his elbows braced on his knees. He was staring at the floor, like he was lost in thought. Then he looked up at me and my breath caught at the million heartbreaking emotions roiling in his gaze.

And then they were gone, as if they’d never been there.

“That’s all I have so far,” I whispered, so confused by him. “No more songs.”

His expression was unreadable. “Your visitor’s visa is about to run out.”

Bewildered by the response, I could only nod.

“You’ve no money.”

I tensed.

“You’ve run away from your identity, from your life in the band, in the US. You’ve no family to speak of, and you abandoned your friends.”

The man was the soul of sensitivity. “Your point?”

“My point is that you don’t have many options. I think you were living in some naive fantasy that you could keep running from your problems and live a relatively peaceful life as a homeless person. Somehow, miraculously, you survived unscathed for five months. But last night you were given a giant fucking look at the reality and dangers of homelessness. I wish it hadn’t happened that way, but there was never any other way it was going to end. And it has ended, am I right?”

“So, do you get, like, a bonus at the end of every day if you say a hundred patronizing things in a twenty-four-hour period or something?”

He ignored me. “You can’t go back to sleeping rough.”

“I think I got that, thanks.” I waved my cast at him.

“So … it’s either call your old manager, your band—”

“Not an option,” I snapped.

O’Dea smirked. “Then I’m all you’ve got. And I’m no fucking Mother Teresa. I’m in the business of making money, Miss Finch. You’ve already proven you’re good at making it. And from what I heard today and have heard you playing when you busk, I think the world hasn’t even seen a fraction of what you can do.”

There was really nothing to do but glare and hope that he withered under it.

“I’ll let you stay here in this flat free of charge, give you a weekly stipend for clothes, groceries, a new guitar. You can heal up here. But all of it in exchange for a record contract. A one-album deal, that’s all I ask. When you’re healed up, you’ll be straight into the studio to record.”

The thought made my stomach pitch. “I don’t want to be famous again.”

“Tough shit. There is no being famous again. You are famous. And you’ve got more talent in your pinkie finger than most do in their entire being. And that talent deserves more of a platform than standing on a street busking. It’s a goddamned insult to all those people out there trying to make the big time. I don’t care what it is you’re running from. I care that you sort yourself out and make some music again. Music that matters. Music that will heal you.”

I bristled. “I’ve made music that matters. I’ve got the fan mail to prove it.”

“Your music in Tellurian did its job. It was catchy, appealing, and teenagers related. But your voice is meant for something else. The songs you just sang to me … those are songs that will really make people feel. It’s vulnerable and brutally honest and that’s the stuff that resonates with people. People want songs that make them feel good, but they also just want songs that me them feel, even if it breaks their fucking heart. You’ve been through a lot, Skylar. Even if I couldn’t read a newspaper, I’d know that by listening to those songs you sang.

“Two years ago, you were a leader on social media and the lead singer of a pop-rock band that teens and college freshman loved. I’m not asking you to go back to that. I’m asking you to become an artist in your own right. If you don’t want the social media exposure, we’ll have someone else run that stuff for you. And we’ll do what we can to minimize the tabloid exposure. It will be hard at first considering your disappearance, but once it dies down, we can make it so you’re not hounded. It is possible.”

“It doesn’t matter whether they hound me or not. I hate the fame. I hate the touring. I hate it all.”

“No.” His expression hardened. “You don’t…”

About RESPECT

Once upon a time, there was a beautiful princess who called a corrupt kingdom home sweet home.

Protected and sheltered from the worst the world had to offer, she fell in love with the crumbling city that burned and blazed around her. Every dirty corner, every scary shadow, found a place within her heart. So did a man who was violent and dangerous, just like the streets she claimed as her own.

He was all business and brutality, except when it came to her. With her, he was calm, caring, and heartbreakingly patient.

He warned her over and over that he wasn’t the man for her, but she refused to listen. She never expected either the streets or their enforcer to hurt her, since she’d given her heart so completely to both.

She should have known the streets in the Point were always going to be savage, and so was the man committed to keeping control of them in the hands of criminals and bloody kingpins.

Blindsided by a betrayal which cut so deeply she was sure the wounds would never heal, the princess fled the home she loved and the man who broke her heart. Throwing away her rusted, twisted crown was supposed to help her forget. All it did was make her long for everything she left behind. She told herself she would never go back, but in this tormented kingdom, family is everything. Eventually, she has no choice but to return.

While she was gone, the people who loved her worked hard to make the city safe, and the man who destroyed her sank deeper into the darkness. Going back shouldn’t feel like surrender… but it does. As this pretty princess hovers on the edge of the unknown, the past attacks with a vengeance. It’s a good reminder that puppy love eventually grows up and turns into something with sharp teeth and one hell of a bite.

She never asked for the keys to the kingdom. She’d much rather go out and build her own.

My Review

Jay Crownover has done the impossible; she’s taken a corrupt and crumbling city…a crew of dangerous and deadly anti-heroes…a group of, for the most part, angelic and innocent heroines and tied all of these elements together to create a setting and a group of main and secondary characters that grow and prosper in the most unruly, chaotic, and impossible situations, not quite creating fairy tale endings for these dynamic couples but offering them a chance for more…a chance to decide their own fates in a place that would much rather chew them up and spit them out, illustrating who or what’s actually in charge in the Point regardless of what it tries to take away from those who live within its limits.

The Point revels in its darkened alleyways…its dilapidated buildings…its dangerous inhabitants. It’s supposed to be a place of nightmares…a place where people go missing and no one looks for them…it’s not a city that should include fairy tale characters, even if they aren’t necessarily ideal, but that’s exactly what Jay Crownonver offers her readers in her Welcome to the Point and The Breaking Point series, and while her characters of this volatile and deadly world would not be considered true kings, queens, princes, princesses, and knights, Bax/Dovie, Race/Brysen, Nassir/Keelyn, Stark/Noe, and Booker/Karsen all have a part to play in this dilapidated kingdom…as long as they survive what threatens to reign down on them.

In Honor, Jay Crownover introduced readers to the devil himself and placed an angel in his path, not necessarily to redeem him, but to fight for something other than burning places to the ground.

In Dignity, readers met a wizard of sorts and a pixie girl whose skills rival his own.

And now, in Respect, we’re able to watch the knight of the Point guard something other than the gates of someone else’s kingdom and claim his princess…the woman who has always been his despite the age difference, despite his scars, and despite the declaration and threat sent down from the King.

I can’t tell you how excited I was to immerse myself back into the world that I’ve grown to adore despite its ranshackled and fractured status, and I knew from the start of Booker and Karsen’s story that their relationship would have to be broken before it could offer either of them the real chance that they wanted. But as I witnessed that pivotal moment play out and not just break their hearts but blow them into a thousand, million pieces, I didn’t know where these two would go from here and if they would ever get everything they deserved, including each other.

But despite the years they lost…despite Booker’s feelings of inadequacy and a past that constantly haunts him…despite the people who love Karsen willing to do whatever it takes to give her a better life than the one she’ll have in the Point, this knight and this princess, together, find a way to make than own happiness, forging a bond that seemed impossible for so long but one that will now guide them to make a stand against a tyrant and a not so wicked queen who always felt they were doing what’s best for the princess.

As I read the other stories in The Breaking Point series and witnessed the interactions between Karsen and Booker, I can’t say that I understood Karsen’s infatuation with Race’s enforcer, and it was never about the age difference…it was always about the desire for Karsen to have more than the other characters have or at least the choice to have it.

But as Karsen tells her own story, her heartbreak is palpable and readers see, firsthand, how her painful feelings forced her to not truly live during her four years of college in Colorado, simply existing and graduating with no true direction, especially the one that her family always hoped she would take.

Through Karsen’s internal musings, her heartfelt conversations with her best friend, Ari, and her stilted but emotional discussions with the only man she’s ever loved, readers begin to understand that her feelings for Booker were always based on a deep and powerful connection, illustrating that it was never a crush or just puppy love; it was always a living, breathing, and tangible emotion that refused to abate even when it unequivocally shattered her heart.

Although the Point is not where Noah Booker was born, it definitely played a significant role in molding him into an unfeeling brute…a scary and scarred enforcer who thinks his only skill is his ability to hurt people, doing the dirty work of those he works for, never feeling capable or worthy of more. But Booker showed a much different side of himself in his interactions with Karsen, and through their time together, regardless of the fact that he downplayed her feelings for him as nothing but a crush, he developed his own affection for the girl who he guarded with his life.

Booker and Karsen are fighters, which means that there’s nothing they won’t do for the ones they love, but more importantly, there’s nothing they won’t do for their ONE…for their other half…for the person who brings light into Booker’s darkness and for the person who surrounds Karsen with trust and respect.

What Jay Crownover has demonstrated through Respect is that regardless of the age difference between Booker and Karsen, they know what they want and who they want it with and the people who love them should have recognized that idea and respected both of them enough to see what’s so clearly been between Booker and Karsen for all these years.

The Point and The Breaking Point series poignantly illustrate Jay Crownover’s remarkable ability to craft storylines and characters that despite their gritty and raw appearances truly define and depict the true measure of a man in an atmosphere that wants nothing more than to see them fail, so overcoming their circumstances and finding love and light beneath the hate and darkness speaks more to who these characters are and how they make their own not-so fairy tale endings.

~Karsen~

I had no plans to leave the Point. It was ugly, mean, hard, and unforgiving, but these streets were home and I couldn’t imagine being happy anywhere else. This place had long since made my hands and the edges of my soul dirty. It was something I would be hard-pressed to hide should I go anywhere else. I’d have to spend my days trying to camouflage the filth I was so familiar with. Here, no one looked twice at the pretty teenager with shadows in her eyes and blood on her hands. I was one of many.

I wasn’t interested in leaving behind my sister or her fiancé, Race. We were an odd, dysfunctional family, but we made it work.

I didn’t want to be too far away from my mother, who was living in a group home as she slowly, painfully tried to recover from her alcoholism and PTSD from an accident she caused that ended up taking the life of a young mother and her child.

But more than anything, I absolutely didn’t want to leave him.

I couldn’t imagine a day going by without catching a glimpse of Noah Booker. I mean, he was impossible to miss. Six-and-a-half-feet tall, body built like a professional athlete, dark and brooding with the prettiest gunmetal-gray eyes, he was the entirety of every one of my teenage fantasies. I barely noticed the jagged scar dividing one side of his face. White and raised, it cut one of his black eyebrows in half, slashed over a high cheekbone, and ended somewhere under the chiseled edge of his hard jaw. He never talked about it, but Race, Booker’s boss, let it slip that Booker got the scar when he was locked up. Or maybe it wasn’t as much of a slip-up as a thinly veiled warning. Race never kept it much of a secret that my infatuation with his massive, dangerous, ex-con enforcer made him extremely uncomfortable. He’d warned me over and over again that Booker wasn’t for me. And he’d made it clear to the man who broke knees and smashed heads for a living that he was to stay as far away from me as possible.

They called it puppy love. It wasn’t.

To me, it was a vicious kind of love, filled with teeth and claws that I could feel digging at my insides every single time someone patted me on the head and told me how young I was, how much life I had yet to live. This love was rabid, and I was tired of having it on a leash. I wanted to let it free, wanted to let it sink its razor-sharp fangs into the man who had awoken the primal need inside of me. It was only fair he felt the same kind of crushing bite and painful pressure around his heart that I did every single day.

I was solely focused on getting to Booker. It barely registered I was done with high school and had new doors opening all around me. I couldn’t care less about getting my hands on my diploma. A piece of paper with Karsen Carter written on it in pretty calligraphy meant exactly nothing to me. The only thing I was focused on was the fact I was finally old enough to make my own choices. And I’d always picked Booker. Over and over again he was my number one priority.

RELEASE BLITZ REVIEW AND EXCERPT: ONE TO KEEP by Lexi Blake

Stefan Talbot likes order and control. He approaches his life with the same meticulous precision that he uses to put paint on his canvas. Nothing good comes from chaos, and that is why he has refused to allow himself to get close to Jennifer Waters. They are like fire and ice. Though she is younger, her talent as an artist is unquestionable. But she lives her life like she paints—with wild, passionate abandon. It is intoxicating and terrifying, and he can’t get her out of his head.

Jennifer ran from Bliss to put Stef behind her. She had come to the mountain town seeking a mentor but found much more than she bargained for. Cool and distant, Stef was like a marble statue and no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t break through his shell. She moved to Dallas to start over, but nothing is going as planned. When the art gallery where she works is robbed and a precious painting is stolen, Jen is accused of the theft. Jen is thrilled when her bail is met, until she realizes her savior is Stef and he has a few conditions. First and foremost, she has to return to Bliss.

Against the backdrop of the Winter Festival, Stef and Jen’s attraction catches fire. But the dark forces behind the robbery in Dallas have followed Jen home. A criminal syndicate believes she still has the stolen painting and they’ll kill to get their hands on it.

My Review

I’m so glad to be back in Bliss, Colorado – a place where the community is as quirky as can be and loves to meddle in other people’s lives, but it’s also a tight knit group who has each other’s back and will do whatever needs to be done to take care of their own.

In their own right, Stefan Talbot and Jennifer Waters are intriguing and complex characters and the fact that readers are privy to both of their perspectives, including their internal musings, allows us to get to the heart of Stefan’s issues with relationships and commitment and the reasons behind Jennifer’s escape to Texas and the risks and complications that surround her as she comes back home and faces off with not only Stefan but the issues that also seemed to follow her home.

I do have to admit, though, that I struggled with Stef and Jennifer as a couple. As a man who thrives on order and control, Stef tends to demand obedience from those around him, especially Jennifer, even though he knows that she lives her life in ways that match her artistic nature and that stifling her creativity rids the world of her chaotic beauty. I just didn’t understand why Stef would want that to happen when it clearly defines who she is, and even when readers are given much needed reasoning, my buy-in was still a bit lacking due to certain situations and exhibited behavior, so while I could tell that Stef’s feelings for Jennifer were strong despite some of his actions, I wanted to feel like they couldn’t live without each other and that they had a bond that would survive anything and even at the end, I still wondered if they had what it takes to work through everything that happened and focus on what’s most important.

A lot goes down in One to Keep, which makes Stefan and Jennifer’s story about so much more than them figuring out if they belong together. There’s suspense, dramatics, and a whole lot of sexual tension as well as an air of danger that surrounds, not only Jennifer, but the entire town of Bliss, which makes the

secondary characters just as important as the hero and heroine, partially because Stef and Jennifer need their support to overcome what they’re up against but more so that through the townspeople, readers gain further insight into the ins and outs of the town and their views on King Stef, the Dominant, and his artsy submissive.

Despite my misgivings about Stef and Jennifer’s relationship, I loved revisiting this crazy Colorado town and its inhabitants, and I’m hopeful that some of the characters who were introduced in One to Keep and/or the ones readers learned more about have their stories told because there’s definitely some interesting dynamics that I’d love to see explored.

Stef turned back to Jen. “Let’s move, Jennifer. I have a plane ready. We need to be at Love Field in an hour. I have an officer waiting to process you out.”

Jen’s head whirled. “Plane?”

“Yes, plane. We’re going back to Bliss.”

“No way.”

Cool, gray eyes slitted, and she could practically feel the will rolling off him. Stef was tense, and she knew it was a bad idea to push him, but she couldn’t help it.

“I’m serious, Stef. I’m not going anywhere with you.” She couldn’t go back to Bliss. Panic threatened to swamp her. He was here. He was right here in front of her, and her heart didn’t give a damn that he was a bastard. For the first time in months, she felt desire for something besides her art. She couldn’t, wouldn’t, go down that path again.

He got into her space, a move he’d perfected seemingly long before he met her. She held her ground. Even though he didn’t touch her physically, he seemed to surround her. Suddenly her whole world was Stef, his gray eyes, the heat of his body, his masculine, clean scent. He filled her every sense.

“I’m not going home with you.” She forced herself to say the words.

His lips hitched up. “At least you admit Bliss is your home.”

That wasn’t what she’d meant. Bliss, Colorado, had felt like home when she’d been there, but she knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that Bliss wasn’t big enough for the two of them. “It’s your home. Hell, Stef, it’s your little kingdom, and you like to play the king, don’t you?”

“Yes, because everyone does what I say.” Stef’s low growl made her breath speed up. “Everyone in Bliss bows down to me. Have you been gone for so long that you forget Max regularly kicks my ass? And Nell and Henry are currently protesting my gardening practices.”

He was too close for comfort. She gave in and took a step back. She could see plainly that he was satisfied with her discomfort. “Don’t try to play the poor rich boy with me. You’re a puppet master. You like to pull the strings and see how people dance. Well, I’m not in your kingdom anymore, and there’s no way you can get me there again. So you can take your money and go back to Colorado.”

It was stupid. Even as she said the words, she wanted to take them back. She’d spent the last twenty-four hours terrified in a jail cell. She would have to be the stupidest woman in the world to turn him down, but she’d never thought around Stef. Since the moment she’d met him, she’d been a quivering mass of emotion and desire every time he entered a room.

“Stubborn thing. I’ll make it easy on you.” His hands caught hers, and before she could think she felt cold metal surrounding her wrists. He flicked the cuffs on with the cool precision of a man who often cuffed the women in his life.

“What are you doing?” She stared at her hands. At least this time they were in front of her. She preferred it that way. Damn, her life had taken a wrong turn when she could compare and contrast her experiences with men who handcuffed her.

“Taking you home, Jennifer. Whether you like it or not.”

He leaned down and picked her up. She was in his arms, nestled close to his chest. She looked up at the square, inflexible line of his jaw. His arms tightened around her, and she was caged more closely than she’d been in the holding cell. She had the suspicion that this time Stef would be harder to escape from than before. He kicked open the door and started down the hall.

Yep, like it or not, she was going back to Bliss.

From the moment he was old enough to walk on his own two feet, he’s been looking for trouble.

Trouble comes in many forms…quite a few of those forms being the female persuasion.

Tyler knows what girls want—a bad boy. And he has the bad boy image down pat.

Ex-military—check.

Hot cop—double check.

A bike between his legs and a devil may care attitude—oh, yeah.

All the girls want him, yet none of them will have him—at least not all of him, anyway. A certain appendage they can have all they want. His heart, however, is not up for grabs. The useless organ inside his chest was broken and battered, mutilated by the one woman he thought would keep it safe.

Spoiler alert: she ripped it to shreds and set fire to the pieces.

To protect himself, Tyler keeps everyone at arm’s length, and never lets anyone get too close.

Then Reagan Rose Alvarez barrels into his life, and trespasses on not only his property, but straight into his abused heart. One glance is all it takes, and he’s suddenly thinking about things he hasn’t thought for quite some time—thoughts that a man like him should never have about a woman like her.

One moment of weakness is all it takes, and suddenly he has no other choice but to go on the offensive.

Keeping her is the only other option now.

Turns out, his heart isn’t as broken as he thought it was.

The only problem is, now the little she-devil holds it in the palm of her hands, and she has no clue just how much power she holds.

At face value, Tyler Cree and Reagan Rose Alvarez couldn’t be more different, and it’s not just because there’s a ten year age difference between them; it’s more due to their polar opposite personalities and Reagan’s inability to follow the letter of the law, since Tyler is a cop, because of her wild and free spirit that has her willingly taking risks regardless of the severity of the repercussions.

It’s clear, though, that despite their differences, Tyler and Reagan are drawn to one another in inexplicable ways, and while Tyler can deny his attraction and maintain his distance, it’s inevitable that the chemistry sizzling between them is going to force his head, but what remains unclear is if he can see past his bitterness when it comes to the opposite sex and give his connection with Reagan a real chance or if he’ll shut down and shut out what could be the best thing he’ll ever have.

There’s not a Lani Lynn Vale heroine who I haven’t liked, but some definitely stand out among the rest and I can wholeheartedly say that I have more than a bit of a girl crush on Reagan. She’s quite the complex character and she has a number of relatable characteristics that will resonate with readers. She’s shy but will defend herself and those she loves…she’s socially awkward and gets extremely anxious, but she can also own any room she walks into and with the kind of brash man that Tyler is, she isn’t afraid to tell him what’s on her mind, especially when she pisses him off.

Tyler Cree is an alpha male to his core, and with the amount of near death experiences he’s had as well as his military and SWAT team background, he’s all about protecting and serving, and he’ll fight tooth and nail for his family and his friends, but because he’s been burned and broken by a conniving and cheating woman, he refuses to get in deep with another woman, especially the pain in the ass trespasser who’s all about getting what she wants by some rather creative ways.

What I most love about Reagan and Tyler is that neither compromises who they are for the other one unless it’s a quality that needs some adjusting. At one point in the story, Tyler goes off on Reagan without knowing all the details that happened, which not only illustrates the differing ways they react to things but it also shows Tyler what he needs to change about himself to truly be connected to Reagan in all the ways he never knew he needed and wanted.

I love the tie-in that’s always there with other characters readers are more than familiar with…Janie has been quite the instigator in putting people together, which has been established throughout other story lines, so the fact that she’s up to it again when it comes to Tyler and Reagan’s relationship works nicely in this story and it forces the couple to face their true feelings for one another.

I would have liked to have seen a bit more insight into the reasons behind Tyler’s struggles and what makes him finally take a step forward rather than backwards as well as a closer look at the two sides of Reagan’s personality and how they work together since they’re on complete opposite sides of the spectrum. But the lack of further explanations didn’t deter my enjoyment of the story because the plot line flowed well and the characters’ interactions and internal musings allowed me to understand quite a bit about both Tyler and Reagan.

I can’t get enough of Lani Lynn Vale’s Simple Man series; I love the irony of the series title because when readers truly get to know these men, they are anything but simple, which makes these men extraordinary and the women who love them saints!

RELEASE DAY PROMO AND EXCERPT: IT SEEMED LIKE A GOOD IDEA AT THE TIME by Kylie Scott

“Addictive like all Kylie Scott books, you’ll swoon, laugh, ache, put your life on hold, and compulsively read until the wee hours of the night—only to reread the whole thing the next morning. Perfection!”

– Katy Evans, New York Times bestselling author

Returning home for her father’s wedding was never going to be easy for Adele. If being sent away at eighteen hadn’t been bad enough, the mess she left behind when she made a pass at her dad’s business partner sure was.

Fifteen years older than her, Pete had been her crush for as long as she could remember. But she’d misread the situation—confusing friendliness for undying love. Awkward. Add her father to the misunderstanding, and Pete was left with a broken nose and a business on the edge of ruin. The man had to be just as glad as everyone else when she left town.

Seven years later, things are different. Adele is no longer a kid, but a fully grown adult more than capable of getting through the wedding and being polite. But all it takes is seeing him again to bring back those old feelings.

Sometimes first loves are the truest.

“Did you enjoy the wedding?” he asked.

“W-what?”

The man stood much closer than necessary. “The wedding. It was nice, right?”

“Sure.”

Faint strains of music carried from across the road. It seemed worlds away. He downed a mouthful of scotch, gaze never leaving my face. All I could smell was the single malt, his cologne, and the slight scent of salt on his skin. After all, it’d been a hot night and he’d been dancing in the suit. He wasn’t happy; I knew the signs well enough. The tension in his jawline and the look in his eyes. All heated and intense.

“So you’ve been sitting in the dark, drinking and brooding, huh?” I asked. “That sounds constructive.”

“What did Leona have to say?”

I laughed. “Oh, hell no. I’m not getting caught in the middle of you two again. Why don’t you try settling your issues like normal people and actually talk to one another?”

“You have such a clever mouth, Adele.” He cocked his head. “Always got an answer, don’t you?”

“Enjoy your scotch, Pete.” I turned away. “I’m going to bed.”

“What’s the rush?” Strong fingers wrapped around my arm, not gripping me hard, just enough to hold me in place.

“I’ve spent enough time tonight in the company of a drunken asshole, thank you.” I smiled.

His return smile was lopsided. “You’re angry.”

“I’m tired.”

“You’re angry and tired. Me too,” he said. “Less so on the tired, though. Actually, I’m wide the fuck awake.”

“Good for you.”

He finished off his drink, then reached past me, setting the empty glass on the kitchen counter. “Keep me company.”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

“Why not?” he asked, expression full of false interest. “Thought you’d love the chance to tell me off some more.”

I looked away. “We’re done here.”

“No, we’re not.”

“Yes, we are.” I pulled my arm out of his grasp. “We’re finished, Pete. Our friendship or whatever the hell it is these days . . . It’s over, kaput, the end. Took me seven years, but tonight I finally wised up.”

“That so?”

“Yep,” I said. “I refuse to keep feeling this way about you. It’s such a stupid waste.”

His gaze narrowed.

“You know, I even have a plan.”

“What might that be?”

“In the morning, I’m going to go home and fuck every available man I meet until one of them does it for me.” My smile felt jagged and horrible. It couldn’t have been pretty so see. “And then I won’t think about you anymore.”

His fingers curled into tight fists. Nice to know I wasn’t the only one affected. I put my hand on his chest, getting up in his face. Two could play the invading-personal-space game, for fun and intimidation. As if I would back down.

RELEASE LAUNCH: MIXED UP LOVE by Natasha Madison

Hunter

When my business partner asked me to do him a favor, I had no idea he was sending me on a blind date his mother arranged for him. I walked in the bar, saw the woman drinking her third martini, and knew I was in for an eventful night.

After the unexpected second date, she didn’t know my real name or who I really was. By that time, the lie was too far gone, and I wanted her too much to admit the truth.

Laney

It’s not every day you find out your ex-boyfriend is engaged.

I shouldn’t have agreed to the blind date. My mother insisted, and I wasn’t in any position to turn down a night out.

I will admit, I definitely shouldn’t have ordered that fourth martini before said blind date even arrived.

The man turned out to be swoon worthy, handsome, condescending—a perfect distraction. Then I found out he was a liar.

I’ve never been in over my head to this degree.

Then again, I’ve never been in love.

Everyone says opposites attract. And they must be right, because there’s no logical reason why I’m so drawn to Colin Fitzgerald. I don’t usually go for tattoo-covered, video-gaming, hockey-playing nerd-jocks who think I’m flighty and superficial. His narrow view of me is the first strike against him. It doesn’t help that he’s buddy-buddy with my brother.

And that his best friend has a crush on me.

And that I just moved in with them.

Oh, did I not mention we’re roommates?

I suppose it doesn’t matter. Fitzy has made it clear he’s not interested in me, even though the sparks between us are liable to burn our house down. I’m not the kind of girl who chases after a man, though, and I’m not about to start. I’ve got my hands full dealing with a new school, a sleazy professor, and an uncertain future. So if my sexy brooding roomie wises up and realizes what he’s missing?

He knows where to find me.

My Review

Elle Kennedy’s sports romances are some of my absolute favorites; she has the uncanny ability to bring together a hero and a heroine who, at face value, couldn’t be more different but somehow Kennedy makes their differences something that brings them together, even though, at first, it seems to drive them apart.

Readers who are familiar with Kennedy’s Off-Campus series have already been introduced to the hero and heroine of The Chase; Dean’s sorority girl younger sister, Summer, and his hockey player/gamer friend, Colin ‘Fitz’ Fitzgerald couldn’t be more opposite in the way they grew up to how they carry themselves as college students, and while it’s made glaringly obvious that Fitz takes issue with who Summer appears to be on the surface and the fact that the spotlight Summer seems to crave doesn’t mesh well with Fitz’s loner status and his desire to remain drama free in at least one area of his life.

The fact that Kennedy provides readers with both Summer and Fitz’s perspectives throughout the course of their story allows us to truly understand who they are beneath the facades they portray and the reasons behind the constant push and pull between them.

Summer Heyward-Di-Laurentis may seem like a drama queen who thrives on attention and who lacks a clear direction for her life, but that’s not the complete picture of who she truly is; because while Summer doesn’t mind the spotlight, enjoys a good party, and is used to the finer things in life, she’s also well spoken, driven, and extremely critical of herself, in ways that nobody would understand unless they took the time to truly know her. Needless to say, there’s a lot more to Summer than her beauty, her last name, and her flair for dramatics, and it’s the multifaceted nature of Summer’s character that made her extremely likable despite her ‘in your face’ demeanor and actions.

Ever since I met Fitz, I’ve had a crush on him; I’m all about nerd-jocks, being intelligent and an athlete is super sexy and when you add in his tattoos and his love for video games, Fitz is definitely someone I’d have a crush on, so while he’s not Summer’s usual type, the fact that she can’t stop thinking about him and wanting him makes total sense to me.

I do have to say that I was quite disheartened by Fitz’s comments about Summer, but in his defense, his reasons for playing off his attraction to her made sense for the low-key kind of guy Fitz is, and it also lays credence to why there was a lot to work through and get passed in order for Fitz and Summer to be able to stop fighting what’s been between them from the very start.

There’s an underlying theme that seems to drive Fitz and Summer’s story, and it has everything to do with accepting who you are and not caring about how others see you as long as you’re happy with how you see yourself, and for Fitz, that means no longer hiding in the shadows hoping to be invisible because in some ways, Fitz was meant to shine, and for Summer, that means quieting her inner critic and accepting her flaws and her struggles and not allowing them to dictate her life regardless of how others may react to them and her.

I love being back at Briar University, reconnecting with past couples and being introduced to new characters who demand their stories to be told, and I’m quite intrigued by Summer’s bff Breanna Jensen and what Elle Kennedy has in store for this smart mouthed hockey lover.

Excerpt

“Dance with me?”

I want to say no.

But I also want to say yes.

I call this the Summer Dilemma—the frustrating, polar reactions this green-eyed, golden-haired goddess sparks in me.

Fuck yes and hell no.

Get naked with her. Run far, far away from her.

“Thanks, but I don’t like to dance.” I’m not lying. Dancing’s the worst.

Besides, when it comes to Summer Di Laurentis, my flight instinct always wins out.

“You’re no fun, Fitzy.” She makes a tsking noise, drawing my gaze to her lips. Full, pink, and glossy, with a tiny mole above the left side of her mouth.

It’s an extremely hot mouth.

Hell, everything about Summer is hot. She’s hands down the best-looking girl in the bar, and every dude in our vicinity is either staring enviously or glowering at me for being with her.

Not that I’m with her. We’re not together. I’m just standing next to her, with two feet of space between us. Which Summer keeps trying to bridge by leaning closer to me.

In her defense, she practically has to scream in my ear for me to hear her over the electronic dance music blasting through the room. I hate EDM, and I don’t like these kinds of bars, the ones with a dance floor and deafening music. Why the subterfuge? Just call your establishment a nightclub, if that’s what you want it to be. The owner of Gunner’s Pub should’ve called this place Gunner’s Club. Then I could’ve turned right around when I saw the sign and spared myself the shattered eardrums.

Not for the first time tonight, I curse my friends for dragging me to Brooklyn for New Year’s Eve. I’d way rather be at home, drinking a beer or two and watching the ball drop on TV. I’m low-key like that.

“You know, they warned me you were a curmudgeon, but I didn’t believe it until now.”

“Who’s they?” I ask suspiciously. “And hey, wait. I’m not a curmudgeon.”

“Hmmm, you’re right—the term is kind of dated. Let’s go with Groucho.”

“Let’s not.”

“No-Fun Police? Is that better?” Her expression is pure innocence. “Seriously, Fitz, what do you have against fun?”

An unwitting smile breaks free. “Got nothing against fun.”

“All right. Then what do you have against me?” she challenges. “Because every time I try talking to you, you run away.”

My smile fades. I shouldn’t be surprised that she’s calling me out in public. We’ve had a whopping total of two encounters, but that’s plenty of time for me to know she’s the type who thrives on drama.

I hate drama.

“Got nothing against you, either.” With a shrug, I ease away from the bar, prepared to do what she’s just accused me of—run.

A frustrated gleam fills her eyes. They’re big and green, the same shade as her older brother Dean’s eyes. And Dean’s the reason I force myself to stay put. He’s a good friend of mine. I can’t be a jackass to his sister, both out of respect for him, and for fear of my well-being. I’ve been on the ice when Dean’s gloves come off. He’s got a mean right hook.

“I mean it,” I say roughly. “I have nothing against you. We’re cool.”

“What? I didn’t hear the last part,” she says over the music.

I dip my mouth toward her ear, and I’m surprised that I barely have to bend my neck. She’s taller than the average chick, five-nine or ten, and since I’m six-two and used to towering over women, I find this refreshing.

“I said we’re cool,” I repeat, but I misjudged the distance between my lips and Summer’s ear. The two collide, and I feel a shiver run up her frame.

I shiver too, because my mouth is way too close to hers. She smells like heaven, some fascinating combo of flowers and jasmine and vanilla and—sandalwood, maybe? A man could get high on that fragrance. And don’t get me started on her dress. White, strapless, short. So short it barely grazes her lower thighs.

God fucking help me.

REVIEW TOUR: SOMEONE ELSE’S OCEAN by Kate Stewart

Contemporary Romance
Stand Alone
Release Date: July 31, 2018
Cover Designed by: Amy Queau- Q Design Cover and Premades

Blurb

The first time I met Ian Kemp in the sparkling blue waters of St. Thomas, I was six years old and we shared a summer beneath the stars.
The second time I met Ian Kemp, he was a shell of the boy I once knew. Turbulent and infuriating, he refused my friendship at every turn. Like me, he was a casualty of life’s cruelty, but we were planets apart.
We’d both sought refuge on the island, hoping to find our anchor. Instead, we found each other and managed to reclaim our stars…until we both got swept away.

My Review

In the hustle and bustle of life, it’s easy for people to lose sight of what’s most important…of what provides a full heart…of what should be focused on…of what truly matters, and when that happens, it’s difficult to feel grounded…to feel like life isn’t weighed down by superficial and unimportant matters…to feel at peace.

Somewhere along the way, childhood friends, Koti Vaughn and Ian Kemp, allowed others to dictate all aspects of their lives, sending them spiraling and losing themselves in the process, so in order to reclaim much needed peace and gain perspective, both characters, at different times, run away to St. Thomas and focus on finding their true selves again, leaving immaterial people and things behind, and determining their own happiness based solely on their hopes and dreams.

Kate Stewart poignantly contrasts Koti’s life on the mainland to her life on St. Thomas, and as Koti relearns who she is and what she values, readers clearly see her transformation and can’t help but want to experience some of the serenity that Koti obtains by putting herself first and leaving societal dictates behind.

Before Ian escapes his old life, his world imploded in drastic and altering ways, so it makes sense that he can’t immediately find solace or much needed comfort that it’s clear he desperately needs, and this struggle not only frustrates him but his behavior also threatens to undo some of Koti’s progress and healing, which she refuses to allow regardless of her feelings for Ian and her desire to help him find a bit of the peace that she already has.

The fact that Ian can’t instantly heal and find his footing illustrates just how far he’s fallen and the damage that’s been done to his heart and his soul; it’s more of a work-in-progress kind of situation, so it makes sense that there would be ups and downs as well as highs and lows, but determination can also go a long way and it’s clear that Ian wants to desperately reach a point where his pain and heartbreak doesn’t control all aspects of his life.

Koti and Ian’s reunion creates a palpable connection, but there’s work to be done in order for the push and pull between them to turn into something that would bring them both joy and peace. Stewart does a great job of illustrating how the characters work to heal themselves and then work together to build something worthwhile…something that unites them in powerful ways.

Someone Else’s Ocean is a perfect summer read because its setting is captivating and it allows readers to truly understand the serenity that Koti and Ian seek and ultimately find in this little slice of paradise. Stewart vividly describes the splendors of the island, which makes it incredibly easy for readers to envision where the characters are and exactly why it’s a place for them to heal.

Stewart doesn’t add unnecessary angst to Koti and Ian’s story. The focus remains on the process of healing and the need to redefine themselves and then once that work is done, moving forward as their ‘best’ selves allows Koti and Ian to create an unbreakable connection – one that can weather anything that comes their way, especially the chaos the comes with reentering the life they left behind.

4.5 Poison Apples

A Texas native, Kate Stewart lives in North Carolina with her husband, Nick, and her naughty beagle, Sadie. She pens messy, sexy, angst-filled contemporary romance as well as romantic comedy and erotic suspense because it’s what she loves as a reader. Kate is a lover of all things ’80s and ’90s, especially John Hughes films and rap. She dabbles a little in photography, can knit a simple stitch scarf for necessity, and on occasion, does very well at whiskey.
