RELEASE TOUR AND REVIEW: Roughing the Kicker by Eden Butler

Title: Roughing the Kicker

Series: Sinners and Saints #1

Author: Eden Butler

Release: July 17, 2018

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/38636463-roughing-the-kicker

Reese Noble chased this dream for a decade.

Now it was here.

The NFL.

A pro career.

All eyes on the league’s new kicker.

Millions of people expecting her to fail.

But Reese wasn’t a novelty and the spot she landed on the New Orleans Steamers was one she planned to keep.

With her teammates giving her hell and the world doubting her every move, Reese will have to fight harder than anyone else to make her dream a reality.

Even if that means following the lead of Quarterback Ryder Glenn —the only man who brought her to the edge of ecstasy and the depths of heartbreak. The same man who broke her heart ten years before.

In this city, there is a thin line between sin and sainthood and only the strongest can walk it.

Y’all….this book has everything….hot sweaty football players, kick ass strong ass women, Nola and romance.”

– Jennifer Holt

“The writing was absolutely incredible, the emotions and feelings so real and relatable. I can see myself reading this book over and over again.”

– Ashley Wilburn

“Eden Butler take a bow!……This story is full of so many emotions animosity, grief, elation, mistrust, fear, jealousy and guilt, so prepare for one almighty roller coaster ride.”

– Reading is Our Satisfaction

You would think that because I’ve read so many of Eden Butler’s books that I would be used to the angsty scenes and emotional upheavals that drive her storylines, but each and every time I enter one of Butler’s stories, I find myself overwhelmed by the characters’ struggles…by their inability to let go of the past and focus on the present…by the positive and negative feelings that push not only the characters but the plot as well as these two people’s lives collide in a less than ideal situation for both of them.

Reese Noble may be breaking barriers in the professional sports’ world, but it doesn’t come without criticism and backlash. Every aspect of her life is under scrutiny as the only female player in the National Football League, and with so many people watching her and waiting for her to fail, there’s an extreme amount of pressure that she has to deal with, but what makes things even worse for Reese is the fact that her team’s quarterback, Ryder Glenn, despises her and makes both her professional and personal life hell due to their shared past and the fact that he hasn’t found a way to forgive her for what happened between them a decade ago. But Reese is a fighter…she’s a competitor and regardless of the uphill battle she encounters, she refuses to give up…she refuses to cower and that’s what makes Reese an extraordinary heroine because most women, given the history with the playmaker of their team and the fact that a lot of people want to see them fail would fall prey to the pressure, but that’s not something that Reese will ever do.

Ryder Glenn is a grade A asshole for quite a bit of the story; he’s stubborn and vengeful, and he blames Reese for what happened to their relationship. Ryder doesn’t make things easy for Reese, but that’s partly because Ryder’s never dealt with what happened and is unwilling to gain a new perspective, holding on to what he feels occurred and where the blame should sit, which means that until he faces the past, accepts the full truth, and chooses to move forward without it as an albatross around his neck, they will never find a common ground and Ryder will miss out on a second chance with the only woman he’s ever wanted by his side.

Roughing the Kicker is the perfect title for what Reese endures because it’s not just the other teams’ players she must contend with and prove herself to…it’s the entire league and all those who watch professional football, but she gets ‘roughed up’ even more by her own teammates and it’s not the physical licks she takes, it’s more the emotional mind games that are played against her that make her question her value…her skill…her position as a professional football kicker, but even more as a female athlete who has busted her ass to get where she is.

The one aspect of Butler’s writing that amazes me each and every time I read her stories is the fact that she takes risks…she ventures away from the norm and listens to what her characters want and does everything in her power to tell their tale as they want it told, regardless of how difficult that may be and that speaks to the type of storyteller that Butler is and how the craft and process of writing and being true to herself and her words is of utmost importance.

I’ve never finished one of Butler’s books without being emotionally drained by what her characters go through, which absolutely proves the power of her words and her ability to capture her readers’ attention and keep it until the very last page.

RELEASE DAY LAUNCH: REVIEW AND EXCERPT: PROTECTED by Lexi Blake

Their first chance at love ended in heartbreak

Wade Rycroft fell in love with Geneva Harris when she was the smartest girl in his class. The rodeo star and the shy academic made for an odd pair, but their chemistry was undeniable. They made plans to get married after high school. Those plans changed when Genny broke his heart. Joining the Army gave him a chance to leave that life behind. News that Genny married the town’s golden boy let Wade know that he could never go home again.

A chance encounter rekindles an old flame

Fifteen years later, he’s found his place in the world and tried to forget the woman who left him standing in the rain. After leaving the Army he forged a new life as a bodyguard at McKay-Taggart, but he still feels incomplete. When his brother’s wedding brings him home to Broken Bend, Texas, he walks into a storm of scandal. Genny’s marriage has dissolved, the town has turned against her, and someone is making threats. Seeing her again reawakens feelings he thought were long gone, and he worries that staying close enough to help her could be too much to bear.

Their reunion just might kill them both

After an attempt is made on Genny’s life, Wade can’t refuse to help her. Watching over her day and night, it’s clear that having her back in his life could be the thing to finally make him whole. My Review

In my opinion, there’s nothing like a second chance romance; the fact that there’s a history between the main characters and an already established foundation, even if it’s tenuous, allows readers to understand just how much love was between the hero and heroine and why they can’t help but want another shot with their first love.

I’ve read a lot of romances where either the hero or the heroine broke the other’s heart for unexplainable reasons – ones that forced a deep divide between them, making it extremely difficult when they come face-to-face regardless of how much time has passed, and while they thought at the time that they would never have a chance to make things right, that day does come and the revelations always seem to negate the anger and hurt feelings from the past.

This scenario is exactly what happens to Wade Rycroft and Geneva Harris, and while they’ve spent the last 15 years apart, when Genny’s life is threatened and the reasons behind Genny’s decision to break Wade’s heart are unraveled, Wade’s professional and personal lives collide and he vows to protect the only girl he’s ever loved as well as prove to her that what they used to have is still there and worth a second chance.

It’s more than obvious that Wade and Genny belong together, and while their reunion seems inevitable, I appreciate how Blake crafted their new beginning, ensuring that they work through the past, healing old wounds and forging a new connection – one that can withstand anything that’s thrown their way and with the threats surrounding Genny, Wade has plenty of opportunities to prove that he can protect and love her, which is all Genny has ever wanted.

Wade and Genny’s novella is an emotionally charged second chance love story; it’s one that addresses sensitive topics that readers can relate to and Blake also brings in a bit of comic relief by a character we know and love, which is a fantastic way to lighten the intensity while still developing the overall arc of the story.

It amazes me that Protected is book 16.5 in Blake’s Masters and Mercenaries series because most series that reach that number of stories sound repetitive, but that is definitely not the case with Masters and Mercenaries, which hopefully means that there’s still a slew of stories to tell.

Excerpt

“There’s no reason for you to be jealous of Hutch. He gave me a few kisses, that’s all.”

He dropped her hand, turned, and started back toward the office. Hutch’s truck was still here. He would kill the little fucker and that would teach him. He would torture him first. Hutch liked computers. Wade would see how much he liked them when they were shoved hard up his ass.

“Wade.” Genny ran after him, her laughter a musical sound he didn’t want to hear right now. “Wade, come on. I was joking. He let me raid his desk for chocolate. Those kind of kisses. Please don’t murder him.”

He stopped, completely embarrassed. He hadn’t been thinking. She was used to being around a man who took out his temper on her. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you.”

She grinned up at him, her hand on his arm. “You didn’t scare me. Why would you… Wade, I know you’re not Brock. I’ve always known that. I’m not terrified of all men. Hell, I’m not afraid of Big Tag. He’s kind of funny once you let him know where the boundaries are.”

“You gave Tag boundaries?” He’d been afraid to leave her alone with Ian. Not because he thought Ian would hurt her, but because he could be intimidating at times. Now that he thought about it, Big Tag was actually perfect for Genny to start practicing her newfound sass on because he would like her more if she gave him hell.

“Very firm ones, but I also offered him something in exchange. We’re going to get along fine, Tag and I. And Hutch and I are only ever going to be friends. He talks way too much about Game of Thrones, but he does have a lot of candy so it evens out to a nice friendship.” She moved her hand up to his shoulder. “I’m not interested in Hutch, but there is this guy who works in the office I am interested in.”

His whole body went on full alert. He had things to tell her, things that were important, but was here really the place to do that? Here was the place to talk about work things and who she was interested in. Interested in seeing? Interested in spending more time with? “Who might that be?”

Her eyes met his, heating up. “He’s in the bodyguard unit and he told me once that if I ever want a real kiss, I should ask him.”

He could feel the erection coming on like a runaway locomotive. He’d spent the last few months going without. The scene at Sanctum had gotten boring for him. At first it had been filled with excitement, but watching all his friends settle down had made him look at his life in a different way. Having Genny back in it made him absolutely sure he didn’t want casual sex. He wanted a woman who belonged to him, who he belonged to. He wanted disgusting, nasty, utterly committed sex. “Then you should definitely ask.”

“Wade, will you kiss me?”

BLOG TOUR REVIEW AND EXCERPT: The Peer and the Puppet by B.B. Reid

PuppetFullWrap

THE PUPPET

Borrow the bike. Win the race. Collect the cash. It should’ve been an easy job. Ran out of town with a broken leg and a lawsuit, my mother’s latest flame swoops in like a knight in gilded armor. Blackwood Keep is a place I don’t belong, and I’m not the only one who knows. To the boy across the hall, my savior’s only son, I’m a stray looking for a bone.

He’s lord of the manor.
King of the academy.
And number one on my shit list.

THE PEER

I have no intentions of becoming a happy family with the social climber and her wild daughter. A bottle of Jameson and a cracked skull gets my problem shipped to reform school, but I didn’t bank on her returning.

Four’s out to get even, and she almost had the perfect plan: expose the privileged kid moonlighting as a gangbanger. She’s smart, but she’ll have to be smarter. Sending her away won’t be good enough this time. I’m going to have to tame the little troublemaker. To the girl across the hall, the one without a name, I’m nothing without my silver spoon.

She’s lady of the trailer park.
Queen of the swamps.
And my new favorite pastime.

The romance can be read as a standalone, however, the series is one story. The plot introduced in The Peer and the Puppet will continue in the following novels. Content suitable for 18+.

My Review

Before The Peer and the Puppet, I hadn’t had the privilege of stepping into one of B.B. Reid’s worlds, but with the one I entered in the first book of her new series, When Rivals Play, I’m already hopelessly lost to the feelings it evokes and the emotional torment that occurs due to her characters’ antics, misdeeds, and conflicting emotions. The over-the-top angst, the melodramatic situations, and the love/hate relationships between the main and secondary characters kept my head spinning and left my stomach in knots, anticipating when everything would turn to shit once rumors became realities and promises that were meant to be kept were broken.

Reid does a great job of building this extravagant and pretentious world that is Blackwood Keep, Connecticut, and she contrasts this setting with a darker and more dangerous world of illegal road racing and a set of deadly situations with the Exiled, and it’s this juxtaposition that drives the story line in both the setting and the differing situations that play out among characters.

The title of Four and Ever’s story speaks to the dynamics that are at play when Four enters, not only Ever’s world but also his home. There’s no love lost between them from the very beginning, but Ever’s hatred really has nothing to do with who Four is since he knows nothing about her, his judgment stems from the fact that his father has taken up with a woman and moved her and her ‘hick’ daughter into their house, forcing him to face some significant truths regardless of how unwilling he is to accept them.

But somewhere along the way, Ever and Four’s relationship becomes more than just a game to Ever, more than just a way to control his puppet, but because of a set of promises made, he’s forced to continue his Jekyll and Hyde demeanor, causing inexplicable hurt and anguish to a girl who deserves more than Ever can seem to give her and definitely more than her mother has shown her for her entire life.

The Peer and the Puppet is one heck of a frustrating read, but that’s what makes it an addictive one as well. I can’t believe Four doesn’t have whiplash with all of the back and forth that occurs between her and Ever. It makes sense that he nicknames her his puppet because he is constantly pulling on her strings, making sure that she knows who’s in control and how much she’ll regret not following his commands. But what’s even more interesting is that Four and Ever’s relationship is not the only one that gets upended several times throughout the course of the story. There’s a constant back and forth between a number of different characters and the ups and downs that occur illustrate that none of them seem to be in total control and with the number of secrets that still remain undisclosed, it’s still unclear where all of the characters will end up and who they will end up with, but one thing is for sure, it’s going to be one hell of a ride to get to a resolution for everyone involved in B.B. Reid’s When Rivals Play series.

THE PUPPET

I was having a dream. A very good dream. A dream I’d never in a million years admit to having under any circumstances. Not even torture.

Sadly, my dream ended, and I was jarred awake drenched in sweat. The T-shirt I’d worn to bed was bunched around my waist, showing off my cotton panties. I blushed when I recalled in vivid detail what caused such disarray.

And then I froze when I realized I wasn’t alone.

A quick glance at the foot of my bed showed a figure in dark clothing leaning forward with his forearms casually resting on his knees. The scream that tore from my lips was silenced when the figure leaned over and calmly rested his palm over my mouth.

“My father is a light sleeper,” Ever calmly warned. “And I’m sure you don’t want to explain to your mom why I’m in your bedroom at three in the morning.” My heart continued to race even after he lifted his hand, but I didn’t scream. “Good girl.”

“Why are you here?” I hissed while scrambling to pull down the T-shirt still bunched around my waist. I lifted the comforter I must have kicked away in my sleep and covered my lower half.

Oh, God, he’d seen everything. I felt like I had been caught red-handed considering he’d been the one I’d—

Fuck my life.

“You told my father I went to the store for deodorant.”

“And?” I sounded as exasperated as I felt.

“He didn’t buy your story.”

I could imagine considering he was sitting in my room fully dressed at three in the morning. It didn’t take seven hours to buy deodorant.

“Not. My. Problem.”

“But it is. We made this deal together, and we’ll honor it…together.”

I sighed. “So, what did he do to your highness? Take a spoon?” I mocked.

“Grounded,” he grunted.

“Poor you.”

I didn’t expect his smile. It was soft. Indulging. My overly large T-shirt had slipped from my shoulder, so he trailed his finger over my skin. “I’ll have to punish you, Four.”

“Punish me?” That was laughable. “I’m not your child.”

“No, swamp girl. You’re a puppet. My puppet.” He stood from my bed and headed for the door. “If I’m grounded, so are you.”

I told myself I was still dreaming and that he wasn’t actually saying these words. “What does that even mean?”

“It means I’ll have fun anyway.”

Too exhausted to argue, I sighed and met his gaze. “Get out of my room, McNamara.” I thought there was nothing else he could say or do until his parting words.

“You sound lovely when you come, Archer.”

BLOG TOUR REVIEW AND EXCERPT: Four Day Fling by Emma Hart

Four Day Fling, an all-new hilarious and romantic standalone from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Emma Hart is LIVE!

FOURDAYFLING3.jpg

Imagine this.

You’re ready to leave after a one-night stand, and you’re figuring out how to—shock horror—leave your number and ask him to be your fake boyfriend for your sister’s wedding this weekend.

When he wakes up.

Well, that happened to me. And over coffee and omelets, I found myself a date.

Which was how I ended up arriving at the wedding with a guy I knew nothing about.

I didn’t know his last name, or how we met, or how long we’d been dating. I didn’t know where he grew up, what he’d majored in in college, or how many siblings he had.

I sure as hell didn’t know he was Adam Winters, hotshot hockey player, and not only my father’s favorite player, but my little nephew’s freakin’ idol.

Which means I’m in trouble. Big, big trouble.

My mother is suspicious, my sister is bridezilla on crack, and my grandpa will tell anyone who’ll listen about his time in Amsterdam’s Red Light District.

Four days.

I have to keep this up for four days, and then Adam and I can return to our regular lives, where we don’t have sex whenever we’re alone, and my family aren’t interrogating him over his intentions with me.

At least, that’s the plan.

And we all know what happens to those.

My Review

Poppy Dunn is definitely my favorite kind of heroine because she embraces her awkwardness and her sassiness, and she isn’t afraid to be who she is and say what she feels regardless of who she might offend. In my opinion, Poppy is most women’s snarky and inappropriate inner self – the one who they would love to bring out into the open but can’t for fear of how other people will react and/or how they will be perceived.

Between her hilarious graphic tees with funny and sarcastic sayings and how freely Poppy is with her mouth, she’s truly a genuine person and while she may seem like a hot mess most of the time, she holds things together more than she thinks and proves to be a  breath of albeit smartass air.

Poppy and Adam’s story, Four Day Fling, opens up with another awkward moment in the life of Poppy Dunn, but the morning after what was meant to be a one-night stand proves to be the start of a beautiful four-day fake relationship, well except for the off-the-charts sex, but in true Poppy fashion, the reality of who she asked to be her fake boyfriend remains unknown to her until her hockey fanatic family lets her in on who her one-night stand/four day bedmate/fake boyfriend and it’s none other than Adam Winters, star forward for the Orlando Storms, making things even more awkward and way more complicated than Poppy could have anticipated.

Being a professional athlete is definitely not conducive for being in any kind of romantic relationship, which means that Adam Winters is all for one and done connections, but for some reason, he accepts Poppy’s offer of hot sex in exchange for posing as her boyfriend to prevent her mother from judging her even more than she already does.

Poppy’s crazy family is a huge part of the story line and they are responsible for an array of funny antics, inappropriate discussions, and nitpicking comments that threaten to make Poppy’s sister ‘bridezilla,’ her grandfather even more crazy than he already was, and her mother in need of a Xanax or two in order to make her chill out and to keep her unaware of the reality of Poppy and Adam’s relationship.

Every time I read one of Emma Hart’s romantic comedies, I know I’m going to get a hilarious, somewhat awkward and definitely steamy read with a hero and heroine who have a stronger connection than they want to admit and a crew of supporting characters who add to the already established mischief and chaos created by the main characters.

I really enjoyed Poppy and Adam’s story and the fact that it was more than obvious just how real things were between them from the start, and as they attempt to make it through the four day wedding extravaganza what they need to figure out is if their fling can become a forever despite how it all began.

Excerpt

“Ready?” Adam strolled out of the bedroom, playing with the button on his shorts.

“For lunch with my mother?” I turned and stared at him, expressionless. “I’m thrilled.”

He laughed and adjusted the short sleeve of his white shirt. “It’s what—an hour? Then she’ll be back snapping at your sister’s ankles. Surely you can give Rosie a break for sixty whole minutes.”

“Oh no. I’ve done that guilt trip my entire life. I’m not getting it from my fake boyfriend, too.” I waggled my finger at him before turning back to the mirror to finish my make-up. “And yes, I can give her a break, but it doesn’t mean I need to be happy about it.”

“Do you ever get along?”

“Yes. When I’m in Orlando and she’s in Key West.”

“I mean when you’re together.”

“In the same room together, or having a conversation together?”

“Now you’re just being awkward, Red.”

I brushed a final stroke of mascara over each of my eyes, then stopped, wand in hand, and met his eyes in the reflection of the mirror. “Given how you ended up here, I would have thought you knew that awkward was my default mode.”

“That was cute-awkward. This is attitude-awkward.”

“How do you know there’s a difference?”

He pointed at himself. “Four sisters. I grew up with attitude-awkward. I could recognize it blindfolded with hands cuffed behind my back from two hundred miles away.”

“Wow. Someone’s cocky.”

“I thought we established that the night we met.”

My cheeks flushed. Damn it. Why did I have to blush like an idiot? Oh, that’s right. I was a redhead and so pale I was a distant relative of Casper the Friendly Ghost, which meant you could see my blushing a mile off.

“You’re adorable when you blush.” Adam grinned.

“Thank God,” I drawled. “That was my life goal. Be adorable. Now, I can get it in neon lights over my bed.”

Review

I’m a sucker for an office romance, especially one where the two characters attempt to fight their attraction due to a no-fraternization policy as well as the heroine’s goal to focus on her education and gain experience through an important internship.

M. Malone & Nana Malone clearly illustrate just how much chemistry exists between Hunter and Bailey from their very first encounter, so while they make the decision to embark on a platonic relationship/close friendship, they’re constantly fighting their attraction and their feelings for one another, leading readers to reason that it’s not a matter of if but a matter of when Hunter and Bailey will give into what they feel for each other and cross a line that leads to a deliciously wicked affair.

I really like that the writers didn’t rush Hunter and Bailey going against their employer’s policy. The fact that they understand that they can’t take things between them further and adhere to it for a significant amount of time sets the tone for their story, and while it’s inevitable that they’ll end up acting on their feelings because this is a romance story, Hunter and Bailey’s foundation as friends allows them to understand the stakes before they cross the line.

My objective to read new-to-me authors this year is still a work-in-progress, but Wicked by M. Malone & Nana Malone was a great choice because not only does it allow me to add two new authors to my list, but Hunter and Bailey’s story is a fun and sexy friends-to-lovers, office romance that illustrates that nice guys have a badass alpha side and it’s just what Bailey needed to let go and enjoy everything she had always felt for Hunter.

NYT & USA Today bestselling author M. Malone lives in the Washington, DC metro area with her husband and their two sons. She holds a master’s degree in Business from a prestigious college that would no doubt be scandalized by how she’s using her expensive education.

Independently published, she has sold more than 1/2 million ebooks in her two series, THE ALEXANDERS and BLUE-COLLAR BILLIONAIRES. Since starting her indie journey in 2011 with the runaway bestselling novella “Teasing Trent,” her work has appeared on the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists more than a dozen times.

She’s now a full-time writer and spends 99.8% of her time in her pajamas.

Nana Malone

USA Today bestselling author Nana Malone’s love of all things romance and adventure started with a tattered romantic suspense novel she “borrowed” from her cousin.

It was a sultry summer afternoon in Ghana, and Nana was a precocious thirteen. She’s been in love with kick-butt heroines ever since. With her overactive imagination constantly channeling her inner Buffy, it was only a matter a time before she started creating her own characters.

While she waits for her chance at a job as a ninja assassin, Nana works out her drama, passion and sass with fictional characters every bit as brazen and kick-butt as she thinks she is.

DSB_RBBANNER

Dr. Strange Beard, an all-new standalone in the bestselling, romantic comedy Winston Brothers Series by Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestselling author Penny Reid, is LIVE!

DRSB_LARGE

Hunches, horse races, and heartbreak

Ten years after Simone Payton broke his heart, all Roscoe Winston wants is a doughnut. He’d also like to forget her entirely, but that’s never going to happen. Roscoe Winston remembers everything—every look, every word, every single unrequited second—and the last thing he needs is another memory of Simone.

Unfortunately, after one chance encounter, Simone keeps popping up everywhere he happens to be . . .

Ten years after Roscoe Winston dropped out of her life, all Simone Payton wants is to exploit him. She’d also like some answers from her former best friend about why he ghosted her, but if she never gets those answers, that’s a-okay. Simone let go of the past a long time ago. Seriously, she has. She totally, totally has. She is definitely not still thinking about Roscoe. Nope. She’s more than happy to forget he exists.

But first, she needs just one teeny-tiny favor . . .

Dr. Strange Beard is a full-length romantic comedy novel, can be read as a stand-alone, and is the fifth book in the USA TODAY bestselling Winston Brothers series.

My Review

Oscar Wilde once said, ‘Memory…is the diary that we all carry about with us.’

But, the way that we ‘carry’ our recollections is not universal, meaning that the ability to reminisce as well as recall childhood memories or even memories that occurred within the past decade or so varies, and while some might find the capacity to remember everything about their lives a valuable asset, for Roscoe Winston, it’s more of a curse than a blessing because his eidetic memory makes it extremely difficult to interact with others and not recall every conversation he has had with them and the stories that they have shared with him.

It seems like an incredible burden to carry, but Roscoe has found ways to cope with his memories and protect himself and those he encounters, but with one person in particular, the inability to forget the last memory he has of her has forced him to ghost her for the past 10 years, but now she’s back in Green Valley, and she’s hellbent on finding out why he stopped being her best friend all those years ago, and if he doesn’t figure out how to make new memories with her, the complexity of their relationship and his feelings for her will continue to be based on their last interaction when they were 16 years old.

Roscoe Winston is definitely an intriguing hero, and as the youngest Winston, he has witnessed his older siblings find their perfect other half while never putting himself in a position to find the woman for him because it always was and it will always be Simone Payton, even if they never talk or see each other again.

I adored the chapters told from Roscoe’s perspective. It’s clear that Penny Reid did her due diligence when it comes to Roscoe’s better than average memory. Learning about what his mind forces him to endure and the ways that he has gone about trouble shooting his encounters with others helps readers to truly comprehend how overwhelming it is for Roscoe to ‘go down memory lane,’ especially when it comes to the woman he has loved since he was a teenager.

While I quickly connected with Roscoe and his idiosyncrasies, I struggled with understanding why Simone approaches her life the way she does and how her scientific mind guides her decisions, avoiding anything emotional or sentimental…at least that how she thought she lived her life until she was reunited with her childhood best friend. It took me a bit to warm up to her personality and to see beyond her primary reason for befriending Roscoe 10 years later. BUT, I will say that once Simone starts to be honest with herself and with Roscoe, I found her extremely likable and loved how Penny Reid crafted Simone’s personal revelations and how difficult it becomes for her to separate her personal and professional life given that the one she wants to be a significant person in her life is involved in the case she’s working for the FBI.

In order for Roscoe and Simone to move forward, they need to make new memories together – ones that replace Roscoe’s old recollections, and the scenes where they work towards that goal are well written and quite emotional, and regardless of how analytical and logical these two people are, when it comes to what they mean to one another and what they want from each other in the future is highly emotional and something that cannot be solved without their hearts factoring into their situation.

Due to Simone’s undercover operation and where Roscoe factors into her assignment, Dr. Strange Beard takes on quite a suspenseful aspect and it’s clear that before Simone can resolve this case, the truth will be revealed and the role Simone plays will be a point of contention for Roscoe and perhaps a memory that he’ll never be able to forgot or move on from when everything comes out.

I’m a lover of smart romance, and in my opinion, Penny Reid epitomizes all of the qualities that I adore about this style of writing, and while it took a bit for me to see who Simone truly is, once I did, I couldn’t get enough of her and Roscoe’s analytical thoughts as well as their journey to an emotional connection that focuses more on their hearts than their heads.

RELEASE PROMO: Filthy Lies by Raine Miller

Synopsis

On the day I turned fifteen years old I knew I loved James Blakney. There was a look in his eye that told me he’d finally noticed I existed in a realm beyond best-friend’s-much-younger-off-limits-don’t-even-think-about-it-little-sister. Call it womanly intuition, despite the fact I was barely qualified for being an actual woman at just fifteen—and only in the biological sense—but still, I knew I loved him.

What I never expected from him was a proposal of marriage nearly eight years later. I know it’s not supposed to be a real marriage, but James is certainly making it feel that way.

He’s also hiding something from me.

But I’ve hidden the truth from him as well.

Lies.

So many filthy lies.
