habits-box-cover.jpg

WITH A TWIST

West Williams has been friends with Lily since the day she moved into their building and he saved her armoire from a swift, sudden death by staircase. Their friendship has always been easy, the boundaries clearly defined. With neither of them willing to risk their relationship, they’ve drifted happily through the years as companions, never considering more. Until they do. And that realization changes everything.

CHASER

Everyone knows you should never say never. Cooper never saw Maggie coming–she was just his best friend’s little sister, the curly-haired, freckle-faced girl from Mississippi who was absolutely off limits. Maggie never expected to find her fiancé banging her maid of honor an hour before she was set to walk down the aisle, but life’s funny that way. The only option to save her sanity is to get the hell out of Jackson and move to New York where her brother lives. The only downside: Cooper is there too. And she just doesn’t know if she can stay away from him — the filthy rich, dead sexy playboy who’s allergic to commitment.

LAST CALL

Patrick Evans is no stranger to consequences. When your mother walks out, your dad drifts away. When you leave home, you’re on your own. And when you run away from the girl you love, you lose her. He finally has an opportunity to rebuild the bridge he burned with Rose, and it’s not one he’ll take for granted. But he’ll have to fight for her, even if it hurts. Even if it means he’ll walk away brokenhearted. Because deep down, he knows that she’s it for him. The trick will be to get her to admit she feels it too.

HAPPILY EVER HABITS

Who has babies? Who’s getting married? Who has a horrible pun battle, and who tosses their cookies? Find out in this exclusive 30,000 word novella that follows the Habits crew through their very own happy endings.

*This box set includes three full length, bestselling novels, plus an exclusive epilogue novella.*

About the Author

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life — a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can’t forget that. She’s also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She’s been a wife, though she’s certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She’s also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she’s been drinking whiskey.

From roots in Houston to a seven year stint in Southern California, Staci and her family ended up settling somewhere in between and equally north, in Denver. They are new enough that snow is still magical. When she’s not writing, she’s reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.

COVER REVEAL: RICHER THAN SIN by Meghan March

From New York Times bestselling author Meghan March comes a brand new saga of forbidden love and second chances.

A Riscoff and a Gable can never live happily ever after. Our family feud is the stuff of legends.

Ten years ago, Whitney Gable caught me off guard with her long legs and grab-you-by-the-balls blue eyes.

I didn’t know or care what her name was.

Like any Riscoff worth the family name, I went after what I wanted. We burned like a flash fire until she married another man.

She hates me, and she should.

I objected on her wedding day.

Now she’s home, with those same long legs and man-eater stare, but there’s no ring on her finger.

They say a Riscoff and a Gable can never live happily ever after . . . but I’m not done with Whitney Gable.

I’ll never be done with her.

Because You're Mine AMAZON

When you grow up in the most feared mafia family, it’s easy to identify the kind of men that are bad news.

They’re the ones with experience.
The ones with secrets.
The ones that exude sex just by saying your name.

From the minute I laid eyes on Lorenzo, I knew he wasn’t just bad news.
He was the headline.

My opinion didn’t change on our second meeting.

Or our third.

But my head and my heart are at war.

He’s too mysterious, too gorgeous, too wild, and now, he wants me.
I should run far away.
So why am I racing toward him?
I’m totally going to get burned.

My Review

‘You can’t catch a butterfly and expect to keep it in a glass jar forever.’

This quote may be a bit simplistic to describe the reasons Catalina has stayed away from her father, his last name, his businesses, and the company he keeps, but it does provide insight into the freedom Cat needs and the reasons she’s remained apart from her Masseria family and the dangerous and illegal lives they lead.

Being confined is something Cat has spent her entire adult life avoiding, and she’s done so by refraining from complicated relationships, refusing to reconnect with her father, and focusing solely on her profession as a principal ballerina.

But one favor for her sister complicates every aspect of Cat’s life, placing her in a number of situations that she had no desire to ever experience again and leading her down a path that forces her to face her past and the choices and actions that explain why she currently lives the way that she does.

Because You’re Mine has a complex storyline, and Claire Contreras does a great job illustrating just how interconnected many of the characters are and what that means for all involved, but Contreras makes her readers work for those revelations, constructing a path that twists and turns and poses significant problems for Cat and Loren, and because both of them are concealing pertinent information about themselves and their families, a connection between them seems impossible and only furthers Cat’s resolve to not allow her feelings to control her decisions or get mixed up with another guy she could possibly lose.

I really enjoyed Cat and Loren’s story; it’s angsty, intriguing, suspenseful, and sexy; it’s the kind of text that needs to be read in one seating because readers will desperately want and need to have all of their questions answered, and that won’t happen until the story reaches its resolution.

I’m hopeful that Contreras will continue telling stories in this world because there are several secondary characters who would make fantastic heroes and heroines, and I’m definitely not ready to leave this mafia and dancer setting.

Excerpt

Taite is snarling when she stalks in with my lunch a few hours later, and I eye her warily. No one has gotten shot or run into a burning building, so— “Gomez pissing you off?”

She bares her teeth at me, and I smile.

“I know your daddy taught you to play nice with others,” I tease.

“Dad hated getting new partners,” she scoffs.

I laugh, a throaty thing. “It’s only for the day, Tay. You can handle one day away from Miguel.”

She gives me a skeptical look. “Last time he was away for a day, he ended up a hostage in that bank robbery on Fifth, remember?”

I wince. She’s not wrong.

“That was a complete misunderstanding,” Miguel whines, coming over to loop an arm around Taite’s shoulders. She relaxes a little, leaning into him briefly before she elbows him in the gut. “And Crispin was a very nice bank robber.”

“We need to have another talk about befriending perps,” Taite mutters.

I laugh and look up—

And freeze. In the doorway stands a man, tall with dark hair and piercing green eyes. His half smile looks a little confused as he watched Miguel and Taite.

“Oh! Vivi, this is our new officer, Matteo Soto. Matteo, this is Vivian Fitzpatrick, our dispatcher and all around goddess. If there’s anything you need to know, she’s the best person to ask,” Miguel says, beaming at me.

“She’s also brilliant—so don’t play cards with her—and fun as hell, so definitely drink with her,” Taite adds with a smirk.

I point a red fingertip at her and narrow my eyes. “You behave. Don’t scare away fresh meat.”

Matteo laughs, and it’s husky and warm, stroking down my spine and making me want to purr.

“I like calculated risks,” he says, grinning at me.

RELEASE REVIEW: The Accidentals by Sarina Bowen

Summary

A YA novel from USA Today bestselling author Sarina Bowen.

Never ask a question unless you’re sure you want the truth.

I’ve been listening to my father sing for my whole life. I carry him in my pocket on my mp3 player. It’s just that we’ve never met face to face.

My mother would never tell me how I came to be, or why my rock star father and I have never met. I thought it was her only secret. I was wrong.

When she dies, he finally appears. Suddenly I have a first class ticket into my father’s exclusive world. A world I don’t want any part of – not at this cost.

Only three things keep me going: my a cappella singing group, a swoony blue-eyed boy named Jake, and the burning questions in my soul.

There’s a secret shame that comes from being an unwanted child. It drags me down, and puts distance between me and the boy I love.

My father is the only one alive who knows my history. I need the truth, even if it scares me.

My Review

It’s taken me a bit to get my thoughts together in order to sufficiently review Sarina Bowen’s newest release, The Accidentals, and the main reason why I struggled is because while there are definitely undertones of romance throughout this young adult story, in my opinion, any kind of romantic connection is secondary to Rachel’s journey of self-discovery, to her acceptance of her past and of herself, to her first encounter and her subsequent strained relationship with a father she only knew through the music he sang and the lyrics her wrote for the first 17 years of her life. There’s so much for Rachel to work through, which means that the focus for much of the story is about how she’s coping with all the changes in her life…what she’s lost…what she’s gained…what she never had but now realizes she wants and needs desperately, but she doesn’t know just yet how to go about making it happen.

‘There is no evil which does not bring some good.’

This is a part of the lesson that Rachel needs to learn when her world is upended and she’s left to traverse through a much different world than the one she lived for all of her life. Going through these changes and realizing that her old normal will not be a part of her new reality is not something that can be easily accepted, especially given the drastic ways her life is altered and Sarina Bowen illustrates this idea throughout the entirety of the text because even when the story reaches its resolution, there’s so much more adjusting that needs to occur, so while readers can feel hopeful for Rachel’s future given how her life has transformed into one that she clearly has chosen for herself, there’s still work to be done and there’s every indication that that is exactly what will occur even when the last page is read.

Sarina Bowen creates a wonderful cast of secondary characters in The Accidentals. Rachel’s roommate, Aurora, is the perfect ying to Rachel’s yang, and she serves as a sounding board for Rachel and as someone Rachel can rely on and even share some of her truths with, which is something she’s never been able to do since the direction of her life changed. These two quickly form a bond and it proves to be a lifeline for Rachel – one that helps her to understand things as well as see things from a different perspective.

I also adored the dichotomy of Jake’s character – the nerdy hottie is always a hero I can get behind, and it’s Jake’s honesty and his patience with Rachel that solidifies his likability. I love how Sarina Bowen set up Rachel and Jake’s connection, building a solid foundation and then providing them with the means for their relationship to grow at a pace that they’re both comfortable with despite Rachel’s fears and hesitances.

Rachel’s relationship with her famous father is definitely a work-in-progress. There’s so much to be worked through, but neither one of them is willing to take a huge risk, which means that any kind of bond forming between them will be difficult and flimsy at best for quite some time. Because they barely know one another and are forced into this awkward and tense situation, it remains unclear if Rachel’s father stepping up will prove to be a good thing for all involved, but especially for father and daughter.

I have to admit that I was quite frustrated with many of the characters in The Accidentals, but I had to keep reminding myself that it is a young adult read and the fact that Rachel is only 17 years old plays into all of her reactions, her actions, and her decisions. The person I had the most issues with was Rachel’s father; he felt like an extremely flat and static character, and I never fully understood his reasons for being an absentee father or the way he treats Rachel once she becomes a somewhat constant presence in his life. I just didn’t feel like Rachel’s father transformed in any way…don’t get me wrong, he does take steps to make amends but it’s not until the very end when things start to feel genuine and that was a bit disheartening.

Despite the few issues I had with some of the characters and their behaviors, I really enjoyed Rachel’s story and could definitely see her growth as a person consumed with grief, fears, and anger to someone who lives for herself, getting out of her own way and attempting to balance all of the newness in her life with memories of her past and a keen eye on her future.

4 Poison Apples

Excerpt

After the last course—chocolate mousse—the three of us go tripping back across the cold lawn in the dark, Aurora in the lead. I’m the tiniest bit tipsy and wearing heels. So naturally I stumble on a frozen clod of snow and nearly fall. But Jake catches my hand to steady me. “Thanks,” I breathe.

Curiously, his warm fingers remain curled around mine until we reached the door of Habernacker.

I try not to feel ridiculously excited about it.

He lets go when we all reach the third floor. When Aurora opens the door, he follows us inside until we all collapse on the S.L.O., with me in the center.

“Oh! I forgot to steal my plate,” I realize.

“Me too.” Aurora sighs.

Jake reaches into his jacket and pulls out a plate.

“Well done, Mr. Jake!” Aurora laughs. “The party in the annex starts in fifteen minutes.” She heaves herself off the squishy couch. “I have time to redo my makeup.”

I watch her walk over to the stereo, where my phone is already ensconced, and turn on our Christmas playlist. Then she grabs her makeup bag off her desk and leaves the room.

When the door clicks shut, neither Jake nor I speak for a moment. The low chords of a Straight No Chaser song play through our little speakers.

Suddenly, it’s awkward. We’ve been circling each other for a while now—since the night he was trying to be nice and I wrecked it.

“You’re probably sick of a cappella by now,” I say, just to find something to talk about.

But Jake turns slowly toward me and says something unexpected. “Rachel, I need to ask you a question.”

My stomach does a little flip flop, and I turn to face those blue eyes I love so much. “What?” I whisper.

“Well…” He clears his throat. There is a very long pause, during which I hold my breath. “Will you come skiing some time?”

I exhale. “I guess so?” Another beat of silence passes. “That was your big question?” I ask, feeling like I’ve missed something.

His color deepens. “Well, no. I just…” His brow furrows, as if he’s trying to explain some point of astronomy. I love his look of concentration. I’ve missed it.

Jake’s blue eyes lock on mine, and I see how our own orbits might finally collide. This time, I will not send the moment winging back into space. Instead, I lean an almost imperceptible degree in his direction.

And that’s all it takes.

Reaching up, Jake cups his hand to the side of my face. I’m still processing the sweet touch of his fingers when he leans in farther, his lips brushing the sensitive corner of my mouth. His eyes are tentative, seeking permission. My heart thuds with expectation.

And then—finally—Jake kisses me for real. We come together the way a well-timed drummer kicks into the chorus of a song—swiftly, and without hesitation.

We broke apart a moment later, eyeing each other while I try not to smile. “Can I do that again?” he asks, his voice rough. “That was my real question.”

“Well, since you asked so nicely…”

Jake makes a low noise of approval, then draws me closer. I reach up for the back of his neck, my fingers grazing that golden patch of skin I’ve always wanted to touch. He kisses me again, his arm finding the velvet waist of my dress and encircling me.

My heart flutters, but not from fear. Warm lips tease mine gently apart. And when his tongue tangles with mine, I lose myself.

He tastes like champagne. Everything is wild and sweet, until the moment Aurora’s voice rings out. “Ay, caramba!”

I feel an unwelcome rush of cool air between us as Jake retreats.

“I did say I was going into the bathroom, right? And not on a trip to Fiji?”

Neither of us says a word; we only look sheepishly at Aurora.

“Just to be clear, now I’m ducking into the bedroom for my coat, which only takes a second.” She steps into the bedroom, and I hear the rustling of fabric. Then she peers dramatically around the door frame. “Good listening! Now I’m going to the party. Will I see you both there? Don’t answer that. We’ll speak later.”

Jake laughs. “Sorry, Aurora.”

“I’ve seen worse.” She departs, the door closing behind her.

And now I’m self-conscious. Rising, I decide to fiddle with the music playlist. “Do you want to go to the party?”

“I’ll go. But I’m not great at parties. It’s all shouting over the music, drinking warm beer out of a plastic cup.”

“Then let’s not.” My fingers shake as I adjust the volume. I go back over to the sofa and sit down.

“So.” He clears his throat. “Where are you going for break?” As he asks, he takes one of my hands in his, massaging my palm with his thumb.

His light touch is so distracting that I almost forget to answer. “Kansas City,” I manage. “To meet my grandfather for the very first time.”

“Um, what?” He squeezes my hand.

So I tell Jake the embarrassing highlights of my weird story—that I hadn’t met Frederick until this past summer.

“Wow. I’m sorry,” he says.

“Don’t be.”

“I guess I’m not that offended now that you wouldn’t introduce me. If the normal waiting period is seventeen years.”

My laugh begins with an unladylike snort. Ah, well. “With me it’s just all soap opera, all the time. Believe it or not, a year ago I was really a boring person.”

“I don’t see how.” He regards me with darting eyes. “You look beautiful tonight.”

“It’s Aurora’s dress,” I whisper.

But Jake doesn’t seem to care. He slips his arms around my waist. Scooting closer, he slides his lips from my forehead, down my nose and onto my mouth. And we begin again.

COVER REVEAL: BEDFELLOWS by Lola Leighton

I wasn’t looking to fall for one man. Let alone two…

Sullivan and Will are as close as two friends can be. Growing up in the system forced them to rely on each other, and they’ve become accustomed to sharing everything—including women.

Now they’re ready for more. To find love. To start a family. To see the dreams they’ve shared since childhood come true.

Apparently I tick off every box on their list—brains, beauty, and sass. I never hesitate to put both men in their places—which they find sexy as hell.

One problem, I’m a traditional girl, with traditional values—one man, one woman, till death do us part—kind of values.

They’re willing to work to prove how very right the three of us could be, but what happens next is anyone’s guess…

Cover designed By Hang Le

About RESPECT

Once upon a time, there was a beautiful princess who called a corrupt kingdom home sweet home.

Protected and sheltered from the worst the world had to offer, she fell in love with the crumbling city that burned and blazed around her. Every dirty corner, every scary shadow, found a place within her heart. So did a man who was violent and dangerous, just like the streets she claimed as her own.

He was all business and brutality, except when it came to her. With her, he was calm, caring, and heartbreakingly patient.

He warned her over and over that he wasn’t the man for her, but she refused to listen. She never expected either the streets or their enforcer to hurt her, since she’d given her heart so completely to both.

She should have known the streets in the Point were always going to be savage, and so was the man committed to keeping control of them in the hands of criminals and bloody kingpins.

Blindsided by a betrayal which cut so deeply she was sure the wounds would never heal, the princess fled the home she loved and the man who broke her heart. Throwing away her rusted, twisted crown was supposed to help her forget. All it did was make her long for everything she left behind. She told herself she would never go back, but in this tormented kingdom, family is everything. Eventually, she has no choice but to return.

While she was gone, the people who loved her worked hard to make the city safe, and the man who destroyed her sank deeper into the darkness. Going back shouldn’t feel like surrender… but it does. As this pretty princess hovers on the edge of the unknown, the past attacks with a vengeance. It’s a good reminder that puppy love eventually grows up and turns into something with sharp teeth and one hell of a bite.

She never asked for the keys to the kingdom. She’d much rather go out and build her own.

RESPECT is coming August 7, 2018!

If Hudson is your ultimate book boyfriend, I bet you’ll also love…

Adam from Marriage Games by CD Reiss

Anyone who knows me knows I devour anything by Christine Reiss. She writes books that tickle my ID, men that embody my perfect book boyfriend. I wrote Hudson because he possessed qualities that I wanted to fantasize and fixate (pun intended) about. Adam from Marriage Games seems to be Hudson on an alternate timeline. A Hudson I couldn’t have imagined myself, but completely want to obsess over. Pick up this duet if you haven’t! It’s edgier than the Fixed series, but well worth it.

Jake from Turbulence by Whitney G

No one writes dirty talkers like Whit. Jake’s alpha indifference toward his heroine makes me shiver. A must read for Hudson lovers.

Bennett Ryan from Beautiful Bastard by Christina Lauren

OMG BENNETT RYAN. Christina Lauren know how to balance a hot businessman with a strong woman like no other. Witty banter, comic situations, dirty, dirty sex – UNF. I’ve reread this so many times I’ve lost count.

Vicious from Vicious by LJ Shen

I often call LJ Shen the Kindle Unlimited version of Laurelin Paige. That’s because I want to believe my guys are as manipulative and loveable as her hot-headed alphaholes. All of her heroes are men I wish I wrote. Definitely an author to check out if you haven’t.

Gideon from Crossfire by Sylvia Day

Gideon is one of the original popular dominant alphas. One of the men who inspired Hudson and a staple for contemporary romance readers who love the billionaire genre. I’m sure it’s already on your bookshelf. I still felt I needed to mention him.

Donovan from Dirty Filthy Rich Men by Laurelin Paige

While Donovan’s story is somewhat edgier than Hudson’s, at the core, the two men are very similar – silent puppet masters who will do anything and everything for the women that they love. If you are a fan of the Fixed series and haven’t crossed over to the Dirty Universe yet, let me plug Dirty Filthy Rich Boys now. It’s free on all vendors!

She’s a sucker for a good romance and gets giddy anytime there’s kissing, much to the embarrassment of her three daughters. Her husband doesn’t seem to complain, however. BLOG TOUR REVIEW AND EXCERPT: Devoted to Pleasure by Shayla Black

There’s a fine line between his business and her pleasure…

Devoted to Pleasure, an all-new sexy romantic suspense standalone from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Shayla Black is LIVE!

DTP_COMPS.indd

BOUND BY DUTY…
Bodyguard and former military man Cutter Bryant has always done his duty–no matter the cost. Now he’s taking one last high-octane assignment before settling down in a new role that means sacrificing his chance at love. But he never expects to share an irresistible chemistry with his beautiful new client.

…TEMPTED BY PLEASURE
As the star of a steamy television drama, Shealyn West knows fame well, but it has come at the expense of her heart. With a blackmailer watching her every move and the threat of career-ending exposure looming, Shealyn hires Cutter to shore up her security and keep her safe, never imagining their attraction will be too powerful to contain.

As Shealyn and Cutter navigate the scintillating line between business and pleasure, they unravel a web of secrets that threaten their relationship and their lives. When danger strikes, Cutter must decide whether to follow his heart for the first time, or risk losing Shealyn forever.

My Review

For a man who thrives on control and has chosen duty and honor over any kind of personal life for much of his life and career, bodyguard and former military man, Cutter Bryant, finds himself in a rather precarious position with his newest client, hollywood starlet, Shealyn West, because their attraction is not something they anticipated and when lines blur and pleasure consumes them, it’s unclear if they’ll come out of this assignment with their hearts or even their lives.

Cutter is one heck of an alpha male hero, and, at times, his overprotective nature can be suffocating, especially when it comes to a woman he desires. It’s easy to see Cutter’s conflicting emotions; he commits himself to every job he takes, but there’s added stress in protecting Shealyn because not only are their secrets between them, but the threat to her life is always in the forefront of his mind, which adds further drama to an already crazy situation.

Shealyn is an intriguing character – one who has fought to achieve her dreams, and now that they’re threatened by a past mistake and someone looking to benefit from her misdeeds, she needs to do whatever it takes to ensure that everything works out the way she wants and needs them to, and that’s why Cutter Bryant enters her life and ends up turning it upside down. Shealyn does not trust easily which makes sense given her career choice, but there’s something about Cutter that makes her feel protected, even when things seem out of control.

The sizzling chemistry between Shealyn and Cutter resonates from the pages, so it’s understandable why they both can’t help but give into what they’re feeling, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t further complicate an already complex situation or feel a bit overbearing when Cutter’s protective nature goes a little overboard, and until the blackmailer is dealt with and all of the secrets are laid bare, things are bound to be dicey and dramatic, and that’s exactly what goes down the closer Shealyn and Cutter become and the infinite lengths that Cutter is willing to go.

Devoted to Pleasure is one wild, sensual, and dangerous ride, and the title itself, although it seems contrary to what the word devotion implies, proves to be both a curse and a blessing for Shealyn and Cutter and with the amount of suspense, drama, and twists that occur throughout the storyline, professional and personal relationships become a point of contention for those involved.

“That and taking a bullet for you is my job. I do it well. You must believe that, too, or you would have hired someone else.”

“You are one stubborn man. My grandfather’s mules could take lessons from you. I’ll be out in ten minutes.” She whirled around and headed for her bathroom in the back, then shut the door.

Cutter couldn’t stop the smile from creeping across his face. Had Shealyn just compared him to an ass?

He’d decided she had when she emerged in a gauzy white dress trimmed in lace that accentuated the hint of gold in her sun-kissed skin.

The thin straps clung to the tips of her shoulders, as if threatening to slip down at any moment, and played peekaboo with her blond tresses. The garment stretched tight across her breasts, the three little buttons keeping the bodice shut threatening to pop if she made a too-sudden move. The flimsy thing also ended well above her knees and, with her white cowboy boots, framed her sleek thighs.

Cutter felt his thoughts evaporate and his tongue go dry. The rest of him turned stone hard. He shouldn’t think twice about Shealyn as a woman, but so far, that seemed to be asking the impossible.

“You’re wearing that?”

She cocked her head at him. “What’s wrong with it? Or are you suggesting this dress is somehow dangerous?”

Her challenge and sass turned him on even more. Hell, everything about her did.

But he was way out of line. The dress portrayed precisely the image she’d cultivated. It was sweetly sexy. Wearing it, Shealyn looked like a gorgeous siren with western flair… and a hint of innocence. The problem—and obviously all the lust—was his alone.

“I’m making you aware that you may attract unwanted male attention in public. But I’ll handle it,” Cutter promised, meeting her gaze and doing his best to shutter the desire burning through his blood.

She stared back, a hint of a smile playing at her lips. “You think I’ll attract male attention, huh?”

Was she fishing for compliments? Her green eyes danced with something he couldn’t put his finger on. Mischief? Flirtation? No. Why would she come on to him when she was already in a high-profile relationship? Shealyn didn’t strike him as one of those women who got off on yanking a man’s chain. Then again, he didn’t know her well.

Whatever she was up to, he couldn’t rise to her bait.

“Ms. West?” He kept his voice as inflectionless and polite as possible.

“Mr. Bryant.” Another hint of playful dare rang in her tone.

“I told you, it’s Cutter.”

“All right. Cutter.” She damn near sighed his name. “You going to answer my question?”

What the hell did she want him to say? Some reckless part of him he’d sworn he didn’t possess itched to simply show her, cross the half- dozen steps between them, take that wisp of a garment in his grip, and tear it off. Once he’d exposed every inch of her body, he would love to put his hands on her, his mouth on her, so she understood what a dress like that did to him. Hell, what she did to him.

A sudden pounding on the door broke the moment between them.

“You ready yet?” Tower shouted from outside.

Despite the man’s insistence, she didn’t move to admit him or even answer. She just stared Cutter’s way. “I’m waiting.”

Cutter searched for a discreet reply. “The dress reveals more skin than it hides. It might give a man the wrong idea.”

“What idea is that?”

The kinds of ideas racing through his head with juggernaut speed and jetting blood south to his cock. “That he can touch you. That he can have you.”

“Is that what this dress makes you think?”

The flash of her eyes and the husky voice she used to ask the question torqued him up. She was definitely fishing for his reaction. Was she hoping he bit because she needed the ego stroke… or was she baiting her hook and tossing it his way because she was actually hoping to reel him in?

“What I think about the dress doesn’t matter.”

“Then why does it bother you? You saw me in less on set.”

Oh, he’d seen her damn near naked. Hour after hour of exposed skin had taunted him with all the beauty a country boy like him would never have the right to possess. But this dress appealed to his deepest fantasies. She looked wholesome yet sensual, a woman aware of her appeal. A female who knew exactly what she wanted in her man…

REVIEW AND EXCERPT BLITZ: BROKEN LOVE STORY by Natasha Madison

Samantha:

I had the perfect life; a husband who loved me, and two kids who were my world.

Until someone else answered his phone and my perfect life shattered.

When he died, I was left with answers he couldn’t give me and a box full of lies.

He left me broken.

Blake:

I fell in love when I was fifteen, knowing she was the one.

For five years, she was my everything—my every breath, every heartbeat, every thought.

She made me promise to move on, promise to find love again, but I broke those promises because I can’t move on.

Two broken souls brought together by tragedy and heartbreak.

Can a broken love story be fixed?

Amazon | iBooks | B&N | Kobo

My Review

I sometimes seriously question my sanity when it comes to signing up for romance books to read/review, not because of the quality of the writing, but because of the amount of emotional torment I subject myself to when I dive into an angsty and heart wrenching read.

The title alone, Broken Love Story, should have been my clue-in that Natasha Madison’s newest release was going to shred my heart and make me question if love is worth the pain and sadness that could possibly come with such a delicate feeling.

But while my emotions were all over the place for the duration of the time I spent reading Blake and Samantha’s story, I don’t regret any of the anguish or heartbreak I felt for the hero and heroine as they worked through their grief, their anger, and the obstacles that seemed to constantly be in their way as what they felt for each other turned into something so much more than they could have imagined.

Given the awkward and impossible situation that brought Blake and Samantha together, I really didn’t know how Natasha Madison would make a relationship between them plausible because while Samantha was just as much a victim of Eric’s lies and deceits, Eric’s other family…the members of his other life don’t quite see Samantha as completely innocent and what she represents to many people involved in Blake’s life, especially his sister, is a major road block for any kind of friendship between Blake and Samantha let alone something romantic developing between them. But Madison worked her storytelling magic and positions these two broken souls in one another’s path, allowing them a way to heal their fractured hearts and slowly repair the painful cracks that they thought would remain open wounds forever.

Readers who have read the entire Love Series are very familiar with who Blake is and what he has had to endure, but who Samantha is, is very much unknown besides the assumptions that have been made about her given the role she played in Eric’s life. So, in a lot of ways, this is more Samantha’s story than Blake’s but because both of them need someone in their corner to help them move forward, to live the best life they can, surprisingly enough, they find what they need in one another’s arms and hearts.

Blake and Samantha’s restorative path is not an easy one; in fact, it’s extremely difficult and complicated given everything and everyone they’re up against, but their resilience, their dedication, and their desire for love sees them through, allowing them to not give up, even when their brokenness seems irreparable, and that’s the message this story provides readers, and it’s an invaluable life lesson.

Excerpt

Samantha

Standing in front of the full-length mirror in my room, I smooth down my black skirt. My blond hair is tied up in a ponytail, my cheeks are sunken in more than normal, and the blackness around my eyes indicates I haven’t slept well since this whole thing happened. Since I found out that not only did my husband die, but that he also married someone else.

I sit on the made bed and look down at my wedding band. My thumb of my right hand touches it, and the lone tear that falls out of my eye lands straight on it. “Mommy.” I look back at Lizzie, who is standing in the doorway wearing a black one-piece dress similar to mine with ballerina flats.

My mother-in-law went shopping yesterday and bought us all new outfits for today. “We need to put our best foot forward,” she said as I watched her walk in with the six bags. “We can’t let people talk.”

I turned around and walked out of the room, going upstairs. Shutting myself in my bathroom with my back against the door, I cried quietly, trying to hide my sobs. “We can’t let people talk,” I whispered to myself. The hatred I had begun feeling when I remembered my husband.

Lizzie walks to the side of my bed and sits next to me. “I hate this dress,” she says when I put my hand around her shoulder and bring her to me, kissing her head.

“I know, baby,” I whisper, “but after today, it’s going to be all over.”

“That’s what Grandpa A said.” She mentions the name she calls my father-in-law. Grandpa A because you can’t get better than an A.

“Is everyone ready?” I hear Ethan yell from downstairs. “The limo is picking us up in twenty.”

“Let’s go, baby,” I tell her, getting up and holding her hand while we walk downstairs. My in-laws are both sitting in the kitchen. My mother-in-law in a black skirt and top while my father-in-law has on a black suit. “Where is Daisy?” I ask them.

“Elliot is upstairs changing her. She spilled milk on her dress,” Judy tells me, looking at Lizzie. “You look like such a big girl.” She blinks her tears away.

Elliot comes down the stairs with Daisy on his hip, smiling at me when he walks in. “Okay, you girls go sit in the living room while us grown-ups talk,” my father-in-law says, and the girls both know to leave the room. When he knows they are both out of earshot, he starts. “Today is going to be tough, tough for us all, but we have to stand together. We have to be the family that we are.” I lean against the counter while he talks. “The situation with the other one has been taken care of, and she has been served papers.” I look at him and then at Elliot and Ethan, both of them looking down when our eyes meet. It’s almost as if they feel guilty for meeting this woman. My father-in-law continues, “After all this is done today, we are meeting with the lawyers in person, so we can go over the will, start the paperwork for the insurance, and make sure she doesn’t touch a thing that belongs to him.” I stop listening at this point, turning to look out the window at the backyard.

The swing set that he built in one day to make sure the kids could use it when he left the next day. The patio set he had delivered to us, so I could have somewhere to sit while I watched the girls while he was living with another woman. I shake my head, walking out of the room. I sit on the couch, and the girls come to sit next to me, one on each side. “Today is going to be really hard,” I whisper to them, “but we have to be strong for Daddy.” They both look at me, their eyes exactly like their father’s. “But, if at any time, you need to leave or you need me… I don’t care who is talking to me or who is around; you come and get me.”

“Grandpa A said we had to sit and wait,” Daisy whispers just as Elliot comes into the room and kneels in front of us.

“What is this meeting about?” he asks, smiling at us. The circles around his eyes are just as black as ours. He hasn’t left our house since this happened.

“Mommy said if we need her that we can go to her,” Daisy says, looking at him and then me, “even if Grandpa A said no.”

He leans in, whispering, “You can come to me too, and I’ll make sure that you get Mommy.”

“Okay,” Lizzie and Daisy both whisper at the same time, and then the doorbell rings.

We get up, put our jackets on, and one by one file into the black limo that has come to take us to the funeral home. We arrive before everyone else. “We get an hour with him, and then they will open the door,” Adrian says as Judy grabs her tissue and dabs her eyes.

I look around the funeral home. I’m not sure what I’m looking for, not sure where he is. I haven’t seen him since he kissed me goodbye four days earlier. His last words to me were, “Call you when I can.” That phone call never came.

I follow my in-laws to the big brown door that is closed. “I want to go in before the girls.” Everyone turns to look at me.

“We can keep them in the lobby,” says the lady who greeted us at the door. She told me her name, but I just didn’t listen.

I nod at her as she turns to ask the girls if they want hot chocolate. Daisy’s eyes get big as Lizzie turns to look at me. I nod my head, giving her permission, so she can go with the woman.

The doors open, and I don’t even know what to expect. I’ve never been to a funeral. Never known anyone well enough to pay my last respects. Judy and Adrian walk in first, followed by Ethan, and Elliot waits with me. I step foot into the room, and it’s so cold that I shiver. The smell of flowers hits me right away, making me turn my head. The number of flowers and wreaths shocks me; the whole room is almost full. Some wreaths blocking others. Rows and rows of brown chairs line the room, all facing toward the front of the room. My eyes land on the brown wooden casket at the front of the room. The open half showing you the white satin inside. I walk down the aisle toward him, and then my eyes land on him. Eric. I can’t take another step forward because my knees give out, and I fall. Elliot isn’t fast enough to hold me up, and my knee lands with a thud. But the pain doesn’t matter because nothing could take the place of the pain in my heart. The sound of wailing fills the room as I look up at my dead husband.

I feel arms around me; I feel myself lifted; I feel myself almost floating. He isn’t the Eric who kissed me goodbye; he isn’t the Eric who I made promises to; he isn’t the Eric who made all my dreams come true. This isn’t him.

The man with makeup caked on his face isn’t my Eric. My sobs overtake my body as I look at him, expecting him to open his eyes. Expecting something, anything but this. “I want the casket closed,” I say, my voice soft. “I want it closed.”

“Samantha,” my father-in-law starts, “it’s—”

I shake my head. “I don’t want the kids to see him like that,” I say softly. I know that for me they wouldn’t even consider it, but for the girls, they would move heaven and earth. “They need to remember him alive and smiling, not like that,” I say, pointing at the casket.

“Dad,” Ethan says after me, “I agree.”

“Me too,” Elliot says from beside me. “Close it.”

He just nods at us, then walks to the man standing in the corner. The man looks at him as they have a hushed conversation and then just nods his head. “Do you need some water?” Ethan says to me, and I nod. I don’t bother listening to what else he says; instead, I get up and go to the casket. Standing before the brown box, I look at him, really look at him. You see some bruising under the makeup, and his nose is a little swollen. His hands are folded over his stomach, resting on his black suit. The suit he wore when we got married. Why? I ask him in my own head. Why did you do it? I ask him, hoping I can hear him whisper something to me, whisper anything back. To answer my questions, to give me something; anything to make me understand why he did what he did. Why he left me with so many fucking questions and not one answer.

The man comes over to close the casket. Eric’s face disappears slowly, the shadow filling his face till the casket finally shuts. “I’m sorry for your loss,” the man says, nodding at me. “If at any time you want it open, we can open it back up.” I turn around now, looking at the chairs that will fill up as soon as the people start coming in. Ethan consoles my mother-in-law, and Elliot stands where we were just sitting, his hands in his pockets.

“I’m getting the girls,” I tell them and then walk out with my head held high but my shoulders slumped. Defeated is a word that you use so many times not really understanding what can actually defeat you. I know now, my husband dying, him cheating on me, my kids without a father, my dreams of growing old with him gone. Beaten straight down to my core, straight down to my bones.

I walk over to them as they look up. “Let’s go, girls,” I tell them as they both get up and walk to me. Lizzie takes one hand, Daisy takes the other, and we walk back into the room that holds a piece of our hearts. The room where their father lies, with no answers and no tomorrow.

We stand in that room for four hours while people come up to me and give me their condolences. I nod my head and play the part of the grieving wife. I am the grieving wife, but I’m also the wife whose husband didn’t love her enough to just be with her. The wife who knew her husband was slipping away but couldn’t catch it in time. The wife he said he would love and protect. The wife who stands here between his girls wishing that for one second he suffered horribly. The wife who has to pick up the fucking pieces and lie to her girls about what a great guy he was. The wife who, at the end of the day, just wasn’t good enough.

We listen as people tell us how amazing he was, how much he loved his family, and how much he loved his girls. The whole time, I’m yelling on the inside, ready to stand in the middle of the room, throw my head back, and yell at the top of my lungs. But I don’t do what I want. I don’t tell them what a fraud my husband was. I don’t tell them that it was almost all lies. I don’t tell them that the day he died, they called his other wife and not me. I don’t tell them that I wasn’t the one with him when he died.

I stand here thinking about this other person—his other wife—and wonder how she would handle this. How she would be with my in-laws. Would she just let them control her and do everything for her? Would she want it to be open and weep for him beside the casket instead of standing next to it?

I look around the room at all the people who came to pay their respects, and my eyes find someone I’ve never met before. Someone I’ve never seen before, and our eyes connect. His green eyes stare into mine as I watch him nod to me and turn to walk out. As he walks out of the crowded room, I strain my neck to watch his back. I don’t have long to think because Elliot comes up and whispers, “It’s time.”

When her nose isn’t buried in a book, or her fingers flying across a keyboard writing, she’s in the kitchen creating gourmet meals. You can find her, in four inch heels no less, in the car chauffeuring kids, or possibly with her husband scheduling his business trips. It’s a good thing her characters do what she says, because even her Labrador doesn’t listen to her…
