“I can’t believe I struck out every single time,” Keaton says with a whine. “I tried all night and not one goddamn penis wanted me to touch it. God, my fucking feet hurt so bad.”

I loop my arm around her waist, partially to comfort her and partially to hold her up as we stagger down the sidewalk to her apartment. It’s almost two in the morning, and the streets are deserted. Only the predawn stars are watching over us.

“Don’t think of it as striking out. Think of it as . . .” I wave my hand, searching for a positive spin. “Being selective. You just didn’t meet a good match, and it’s better to go home alone than with the wrong guy.”

She growls loudly in frustration. “I’m notlooking for a friggin’ husband; I’m just trying to get laid! There’s no point in being picky. Face it, Slate, it’s not me who has the high standards here. Guys just don’t like me. End of story.”

I stop in my tracks. “That’s not true.”

She sways in my arms to face me with tipsy defiance. “Really? Because literally everything that happened tonight says different.”

“So you had one bad night? Big deal. Plenty of guys like you.”

“Prove it,” she insists, her eyes brimming with need and wounded pride.

Her body is so warm, her scent so sweet, and it all feels perfectly natural to just lean in and . . .

Our lips meet. She squeaks in surprise, but before I can pull away and apologize, she kisses me back. Hard.

My Review

As C.D. Reiss’ The Edge Series continues, my mind becomes even more of a jumbled mess, leaving me with more questions than answers, but the maelstrom in my mind also heightens my interest and my demand to understand everything that’s happening to Greyson and Caden, both individually and as a married couple.

How far would someone go for love?

That seems to be the question continually posed in The Edge Series, and with Broken Edge being the title of book 3, it’s clear that Greyson and Caden haven’t quite reached their breaking point yet, but what’s also quite vividly exposed is the idea that there may come a time in the not so distant future where either one or both of them might be too broken to be repaired and what that means for a couple who has endured countless obstacles and continues to somehow survive is still open-ended, leaving nothing but circumstantial insights, which in no way helps readers to reach a valid thought as to how Greyson and Caden’s story will end. 

The only idea that I can say with 100% surety is that Greyson and Caden are nowhere near the people readers met at the onset of their story, and while I’m sure some of that has to do with the fact that both characters have been thoroughly stripped bare as each book in their series is released, my other thought is that Greyson and Caden were on unstable ground even back then, which may indicate that while they attempted to project their stability, the unraveling has happened over the course of the these three parts, forcing themselves and readers to face some harsh truths about who these two characters are and what their true versions signify.

C.D. Reiss has definitely declared psychological warfare on her readers’ minds, and while that declaration leaves readers reeling, what it also indicates is just how skilled Reiss is at constructing a multifaceted and unpredictable story line – one that does not follow a linear path but rather ebbs and flows as situations arise and as the minds of these characters begin to deconstruct, willingly choosing to be bent and battered, even if it means there’s no coming back. 

I can’t even begin to assess how far ‘over the edge’ Reiss plans to take her characters, but what I do know is I can’t flipping wait to understand exactly what each exposed secret and weakness means for Greyson and Caden and just how difficult it will be to bring each other back once they’ve fallen so far beyond what they thought possible.

My Review

Readers who have been with the series since its introduction should be more than familiar with the hero of Walk the Line. Brent’s been in the background of the series as the bar’s head of security, watching his friends find their happily ever after but never wanting to risk his own heart because he’s still not over what his ex did to him and their daughter.

Until her.

But besides Brent’s fears and insecurities when it comes to the opposite sex and his need to protect his daughter at all costs is a set of circumstances that could upend all facets of his life, which means that he knows he needs to walk the line and not cross it in a way that could hurt all those involved in his life – the only problem is that despite the age difference and despite the fact that she’s the daughter of his boss, the connection they share burns bright and it becomes something essential to both of them.

I can’t believe we’re already at Mr. December. It seems like I just started J. Kenner’s Man of the Month series, and now it’s time to meet the final calendar hottie and see what happens with The Fix on 6th since besides the characters finding love, the push to save the bar is at the forefront of each book, and although Walk the Line brings everything to a close, hopefully keeping the beloved bar open, let’s just say J. Kenner definitely brings the couples of this series and the bar that brought them together to a satisfying ending with a few surprises!

My Review

Romance readers are quite familiar with the ‘pretend boyfriend’ or ‘boyfriend-for-hire’ trope, so the fact that April Hamilton and Theo Banks meet one another through a ‘Gigs for Hire’ personal ad because April wants her overbearing family to stop hounding her about her personal life is a predictable storyline, but Lauren Blakely brings freshness to a commonly used story line by infusing it with comical character interactions, a palpable attraction between the hero and heroine, and a first person perspective that provides April and Theo’s internal musings and diatribes as they start a connection based on a paid transaction and slowly moves to something they never anticipated but perhaps sorely needed.

Theo is definitely more of a mystery than April is, and as the story progresses and Theo’s past is carefully revealed, his hesitancy makes sense…his need to payoff his debt and all that that process entails is understandable, and while April’s reaction to the man Theo used to be is concerning, not showing April exactly who Theo was and is will only make things that are developing between them hit a roadblock that they might not be able to overcome.

April’s family adds so much hilarity and dramatics to April and Theo’s story because due to her relatives meddling, April and Theo find themselves in some rather precarious positions throughout all the family fun that’s had and the close quarters that are forced upon them as they begin to get to know one another and find that their attachment to each other is stronger than they could have ever imagined. Imagine the squirrelest and craziest bunch of relatives that someone could have and that’s April’s crew. But, the fact that they are all up in April and Theo’s lives and pull some crazy antics does provide a bit of comic relief when things get too tense or overwhelming for what’s developing between April and Theo, so this interesting bunch of people help to balance the stress and sexual tension that seems to surround this ‘pretend’/‘real’ couple.

The Real Deal is another fantastic romantic comedy from the hilarious and gifted mind of Lauren Blakely, but there’s also quite a bit of angst mixed in with the entertaining scenes, adding depth to the plot and allowing it to take an unpredictable course, which keeps readers’ interest until the very last page of April and Theo’s book.

When I clock out and head for the park, anticipation runs through my veins like a good buzz on a night out. A reunion booking could be my way out of trouble. A five-day gig might bring me very close to the finish line.

If she wanted clean-cut and business attire, I’d have covered up the tats with a crisp white shirt and a fine silk tie, then slid a blade across my jaw in the a.m. If she wanted sophisticated, I’d have given her the smooth, James Bond voice to boot. She could have me as a country boy, even, in a pair of steel-toed cowboy boots and with the drawl to match.

But April wants the guy who might have screwed her in the restroom of a bar.

She wants gravel and sandpaper, ink and danger, shades and leather.

The more you give someone what they want, the more you get in return.

When I reach the park, I head to the Terrace Bridge. She’s not here, but I’m early, since I like to get a read on any and every situation. I scan the surrounding area, noting the benches, the nearby tables, the cool placid water gurgling under the bridge. June in New York City can seduce you or it can trick you.

What it has in store today is anyone’s guess. I lean my hip against the stone railing, and I wait. Two minutes later, I spot a threesome walking in my direction. My heart thumps, and I groan quietly.

Why does the universe do this to me?

Blond curls, lips like a bow, a tight trim waist. Even from several yards away, I can tell she wears little makeup—she has that fresh-faced, rosy glow about her, and something innocent yet knowing in her expression. Like Lily James, whom I developed a wicked crush on when I watched her in her latest movie.

April’s not tiny, but she’s not towering either. Maybe five-three, five-four. A delicious dream. Which translates roughly to “just my type.” She wears tight jeans, a long black shirt that clings to her figure, and a huge silver necklace with a heart charm that dangles between her breasts.

As if I wouldn’t already be checking them out without the pendant between them.

I’ve had many clients. Keeping it platonic has never been an issue since I’ve never been attracted to a customer.

Until now.

Looks like I’ll be getting familiar with how to resist temptation.
